forecast. good morning, chuck. >> good morning, everybody. don't be fooled by the sunshine out there. cold air is overrunning the mid-atlantic. this will lead to our first legitimate chance of maybe an inch of snow in the downtown washington area by tomorrow at this same time. here's our official forecast map. maybe up to an inch in the metro area. maybe a couple of inches out to the north and west. this is not going to be a major storm. but it might have aairly large impact on your day tomorrow. as due to the timing. it could interfere the second half of the rush hour tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon. storm team 4 radar for now is all clear in the metro. light snow showers drifting through on the cold northwesterly winds. temperatures in the mid to upper 30s to around 40 right now are going nowhere for the rest of the day. in your whether to wear category, your hat, your gloves sunglasses all of it to help bundle up. sunglasses will trend ever downward below freezing. cold air, more of it coming in.

this alberta clipper means a chance for snow and winter weather advisories are likely. more on all that coming up. barbara, for now, back to you. >> all right, we're waiting to talk to you about it. more on this a dozen students were taken to the hospital. their bus rear ended a car on the way to high school. chopper 4 was over the scene. the crash happened just about 7:00 a.m. on hawthorne road. that's in indian head. all 16 students on board were taken to the hospital. the driver of the car was also transported. a major accident is now clear on i-95 in fairfax county. it slowed a lot of you down this morning on your way back into work after the holiday break. take a look at the backups. chopper 4 took pictures like this for at least an hour and a half. no one was hurt but delays reached as far as 10 miles. and with the crash, it was a good first step for the i-95 express lane. vdot says a trip of 55 or faster any time of the day.

right now, it would cost you $3 to travel the 29 miles from one end to the other. at their peak during rush hour they cost $11 earlier this morning. a former redskin star is in court right now facing charges of domestic abuse. news 4's megan mcgrath is live in loudoun county where fred smoot is going on trial today. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. we thought the trial might again at 10:00 this morning but the judge had a number of other cases to deal with. actually took those case first. we're sort of in a holding pattern at this point. however, all of parties involved are here at the courthouse. take a look at this video here. we did catch the arrival of fred smoot. he arrived here with his attorney. we also saw the arrival of his former girlfriend valerie jackson. so everyone here just waiting to get things under way this morning. smoot is accused of assaulting his former girlfriend valerie jackson back in november. he was charged with misdemeanor assault. jackson posted pictures on

instagram which appeared to show marks on her neck shoulders and arms. smoot has denied assaulting jackson. his lawyer says that smoot had tried to break up with her and that his arrest was the result of the vindictive actions of a disgruntled ex-girlfriend. he is also a contributor to comcast sports net which is owned by the same company as nbc 4. although his appearances have been suspended indefinitely. the trial set to get under way later on this morning. my colleague chris gordon will be in the courtroom and will bring you the very latest when it happens. reporting live in leesburg megan mcgrath news 4. today a fairfax county judge will set a trial date for nationals outfielder jayson werth. worth was convicted last month and sentence to ten days in jail. last july aclocked his porsche going over 100 miles an hour on the beltway.

prince georges county police are looking for three armed men that broke into a home. it happened near the university of maryland campus at college park on potomac avenue. the man inside the home said he feared for his life and gave the men his belongings. students were sent a umd safety notice telling them about this incident. jury selection is under way for suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. the fight to get the trial moved. and if security precautions. plus back to work. the president returns to the white house, but not for long. the trips ring ring! progresso!

right now, jury selection is going on inside the boston federal courthouse. lawyers on both sides are picking a jury for the trial against suspected boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. more than 3,000 people have been called to be potential jurors. nbc's jay gray is live outside courthouse with more on the selection process. good morning. >> good morning, barbara. we've learned tsarnaev was in

the jury assembly room as the judge gave his initial instructions to the first group of potential jurors. between 200 to 250 people that have been called in for the morning session. this is something that will continue through the mornings and evenings as they try and seat a jury in this case. it's going to take some time. the judge has said 2 to 3 weeks for jury selection and following that he announced this morning that the opening statements in the case will be on or about january 26th and this trial will last 3 to 4 months. that means it will likely be going on at the same time this year's boston marathon is run. look the defense tried to get this trial moved at least a couple of times. denied both by the judge and the appellate court here. wanted to push back the start date. the judge again said no. so they've started this morning beginning what will be a three or four month long trial. something that the city, many of the survivors, have been weighting anxiously for.

they say it's not something that will reopen old wounds because they live with this every day and they're anxious to take the nest step in the recovery. that's the latest from boston, jay gray back to you. >> thank you, jay. murial bowser is on capitol hill fighting for d.c. to become a state. at that press conference this morning, tweeted this picture. holmes norton was also there. they discussed why d.c. should become its own state. yesterday on "meet the press," mayor bowser talked about why it's important for washington to be financially independent. >> we can start with budgets. unhooking our government from the federal government. >> we wouldn't be talking about lawsuits about marijuana. >> we wouldn't talk about lawsuits or shutting down the government when the congress can't figure it out. >> bowser also made a case for the house to restore the district's vote in the committee of the whole. in the day ahead, the city

council wants to know what you think about lowering voting age. the counsel criminalcil will hear public comments. the council meeting begins at 7:45 this evening. if you have medicaid or know someone who does it can now be harder to find a doctor. the government stopped paying doctors extra for treating medicaid patients and some told "usa today," some doctors, that they won't see those patients anymore. at the same time millions of new people are covered by medicaid because of the affordable care act. some states including maryland ill now use state funds to keep paying the doctors. download the nbc washington app today for a breaking alert. bob mcdonnell is being sentenced for corruption tomorrow. prosecutors say he should spend ten years behind bars. his lawyers believe he should perform community service instead of jail time.

bob mcdonnell's wife will be sentenced next month. it's back to work this week for president obama. and the new republican-led congress. they're hoping to work out a deal on jobs and the final part of this year's budget. nbc's tracie potts is on capitol hill. >> reporter: president obama's hitting the road this week to lay out his agenda. talking jobs in detroit. home sales in phoenix. and college in tennessee. >> i want to work with them. i want to get things done. >> reporter: republicans say approving the keystone pipeline will likely be the first thing to hit the president's deck. >> we should put a lot of people to work almost immediately. >> reporter: but not enough democrats say. >> we're going to introduce an amendment to add clean energy jobs. >> he's going to have to decide between jobs and the extreme supporters of not having the pipeline. >> reporter: next for republicans. >> we have to pass a budget. there's only buteen one budget passed in the last six years.

president veto it? >> you know it's unclear. i think all indications are from the press conference that he gave at the end of 2014 is if it's that he doesn't think is going to help the country. this is about canadian oil. it's not going to create a lot jobs. there's a big question on how many democrats will end up supporting that legislation even to be able to get to president obama's desk. but certainly one of the very big things from -- kind of big thing from president obama about how the 114th congress will go. >> we talked last week about the controversy surrounding representative steve skal ease. he had some problems. he spoke to a white supremist group. what's going to happen there? >> this story isn't going away. sometimes when you're in this kind of midst scandal you styles don't know whether the person's going to lose their job or not. he has very little margin for error now. it will congress come back on the house, on the floor of congress the united states senate every one of these republicans gets a

question on should steve scalice remain in his position the question is will there be more republicans asking. they realize this is such a really big headache or we just pass and go on to another story later on down the line and people forget about this. i don't know how it's going to break. >> have both republicans and democrats weighed in on their feeling about scalice? >> they have. democrats are mostly -- you know they think that scalice should resign. they want to make the most out of it. republicans are really divided here. republicans trying to say this is a big distraction, it's not helpful. others including boehner right now are certainly backing skalice. >> the immigration fight, are we going to see that again? >> absolutely a really big story. it's all about funding the department of homeland security. remember when congress ended up passing that spending bill in mid-december. it dealt with everything but the department of homeland security. this is where republicans want

to have their big fight on immigration. the question is who ends up paying the bigger price for the fight? if you end up having some type of potential shutdown on the department of homeland security. >> what about boehner? is he safe in his position? will that come up too as an issue? >> barbara, he -- >> and what will be the issue? >> he is safe. there will be a speaker election tomorrow with the new congress. he is safe. but there are about 10 to 15 to 20 house conservatives who will vote against him. it creates a little troublesome headline for republicans. going to again, make him divided. even though the majority of house republicans are going to support john boehner. it's still a reminder that right conservative flank he has is problematic for him on legislation they want to pass. >> i guess we've covered just about everything. >> it's a lot to watch. >> we've got more to talk about. for more from mark and the rest of the nbc news political team check out first read on nbcnews.com. congress getting started. thanks a lot for being here. after a good weekend at work the coach of the carolina

single digits on thursday morning. the cold weather lingers into next weekend as well. when i see you in a few minutes, we'll have another check of that snow total map. >> thanks a lot. that abducted after her parents were shot has been found dead. police found the baby in a dumpster behind a strip mall yesterday. she disappeared saturday night after her parents and uncle were shot inside a home. all three of them survived the shooting. so far, no arrests have been made. and right now, reports that search crews have found the tail of that missing air asia flight 8501. nbc news is working to confirm that the tail has been found. the plane's black boxes would be inside that tail if it didn't break up when it hit the water. crews also pulled three bodies out of the water today. sonar technology has been able to spot five large objects at the bottom of the java sea. 162 people were on board when

the plane went down. this morning, virginia state police are working to solve a hit and run in satisfytrafeford county. it was on garrisonville road at behalf bafferton boulevard. he's in serious condition. police say the car may be a red chevrolet. it would have damage to the front passenger side of the car. if you know anything about what happened please call virginia state police. a fire that ripped through an apartment building in alex alexandria was set intentionally. the fire broke out near little river turnpike just off 395 yesterday afternoon. 15 people had to leave their homes. it is uncertain as to when they will be able to go back. >> and i heard people crying and yelling. it was like an intense feeling, you know? >> three women were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and burns.

investigators say it started on the first level and spread to the upper floors which put a lot of people in the path of the rising smoke. carolina panthers head coach ron viv ron rivera and his family are okay after a fire. everyone was able to get out of the house safely. the cause is under investigation this morning but firefighters say it appears to have been accident accidental. right now, police are looking for a gunman who shot two teenagers. the teens were on their way to an event at the mishkan torah synagogue. just before midnight some kind of fight broke out. someone started shooting. the 16-year-old and 19-year-old were walking when they were shot. they are expected to be okay we understand. the synagogue is now changing its policy about renting out its space to other groups. dogs rescued. thousands of miles away. coming to our area to find new homes.

plus new information just in on a special needs van that was stolen from our area. the desperate search and the happy ending.

angie goth at the live desk. we are hearing morgan stanley has fired an employee that sold data from clients. the data of up to 900 clients

including names, account names and numbers were briefly posted online. this did not include passwords or social security numbers. but the firm did say that it is working with authorities right now and they're investigating this. this problem, the missing information was discovered a little more than a week ago. barbara. >> thanks angie. right now, 1,400 lucky students are buzzing about the first day of school at the new high school. take a look inside the brand-new facility. 350,000 square feet complete with a two-story common area. now, crews will begin knocking down the old building and setting up a new football stadium there. today, nearly two dozen dogs will arrive in our area from south korea. the humane society rescued them from a farm that was planning to use them for food. the humane society said the conditions on the farm were quote, miserable. 12 are puppies. later this week they'll be transferred to d.c. and northern virginia shelters where you can

see them and adopt them if you're interested. sarah palin is blasting peta after she posted this photo of her 6-year-old son standing on their dog at the kitchen sink. palin posted the photo on her facebook page. the photo got nearly 70,000 likes and comments. some including peta called it inhumane to let anyone stand on a dog. palin responded, dear peta chill. at least trig didn't eat the dog. others offered support saying the dog would have moved if it had been hurt. new at midday a van stolen from montgomery county is now back at home. joan palmer lives in kensington. she needs a wheelchair to get around. she told police -- she told us that police recovered her specialized honda odyssey today. we've not confirmed that with police as of right now. palmer told news 4 why having the car back with her is so important.

right now, metro is taking its next step in a major project to replace escalators across the whole system. the latest station slated for repair is woodly park. the station was built back in 1981. its escalators have been used since then. there are six and metro says each one takes about a year to replace. the agency plans to fix two at a time and says the station will only close if it's too crowded to be safe during repairs. right now, an american health care worker is waiting to hear if he or she has ebola. the worker's being tested for the deadly virus at the omaha. the patient arrived yesterday. the worker was exposed while treating patients in sierra leone. doctors say the worker hasn't

but sometimes you get just the right amount of snow at just the wrong time of day, it can have a big impact. how much snow maybe an inch in washington and points south. maybe 1 to 2 inches for montgomery county, fairfax, loudoun county shenandoah valley. potentially 3 inches across parts of western maryland. obviously doug and veronica will be updating this forecast later on today on news 4 at 4:00 5:00 6:00 and 11:00. in the metro, a dusting, 1, 2 inches or so on average. these clippers are not big snow producers. falling temperatures today. 40s now to the 20s tonight. and then highs only in the low to mid-30s tomorrow. and below freezing high temperatures for both wednesday and thursday. thursday morning will be the coldest morning of the week. 13 downtown means probably more in the neighborhood of 5, 6 degrees out towards the shenandoah valley. good news for the weekend. it will still be cold.
