he roads to keep streets safe. up first today, breaking news out of maryland. we want to go live to pictures over the beltway. a serious accident involving a tractor-trailer. >> richard is at the live desk. >> let's take you to the live pictures from the inner loop of the beltway. we have a camera at good luck road our best vantage point. but the accident is actually near kenilworth avenue in greenbelt. a truck and motorcycle colliding there. the inner loop is shut down because of the police and ambulance response there. initially, the plan was to get a helicopter there on to the beltway to try to get a patient who has some serious injuries over to the hospital. we are now learning that helicopter has been cancelled, because the patient is in critical condition at this point. these are life threatening injuries for that victim on the beltway. so an ambulance will be taking the patient to the nearest trauma center at this point. but it is going to be a while before traffic gets moving here

again. again, the inner loop of the beltway now at kenilworth avenue in greenbelt is shut down. we're staying on top and will keep you posted as we learn new information. >> thank you. now to the story everyone is talking about today. are you ready for our first real dose of winter out there? >> most of us will soon be under a winter weather advisory. we have live team coverage this afternoon to make sure you are prepared for whatever the weather brings us. >> let's kick things off with storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson in the weather center. vj? >> yeah guys whether you're ready or not, here it comes. we haven't seen very much snow at all so far this season. and now our biggest snowfall of the season. winter weather advisory in all these counties shaded in purple to the south, so includes d.c. fairfax, prince william and fauquier county. up to the north and west for frederick county over in virginia too. what we're going to see in these locations is snow. it could be moderate at times. and then advisory means the possibility of accumulating

snow. and what we'll find in those locations, 1 to 2 inches of snow fine and powdery. so not so much the amount of snow we're going to get, nothing big. but the timing during the morning rush and the type of snow that fine powdery type of snow makes conditions slick. there, just to our west a clipper system fast-moving, will put down just enough to cause some trouble on area roads. so what to expect tomorrow morning, snow that may stick on some of the secondary roads. bridges and overpasses. so watch your speed. now, when i return we're going to give something else that will be harder to take than the snow. we'll talk about that, coming up. >> our team coverage to get you prepared continues now. transportation reporter adam tuss has been tracking what to expect on the roads. he's live along one of our busiest sections the beltway in tyson's corner. adam? >> reporter: jim, every road crew in the region gearing up for this. the wind has picked up it's

cold and that means whatever falls will likely stick to the ground. in d.c. about 200 trucks will be out theres. in maryland the state highway administration also will be out with hundreds of trucks. v-dot says here in northern virginia about 500 trucks will be out. loudoun county getting the most attention right they're actually taking the whole notion of snow in stride at the moment. >> does it make you nervous driving in the snow? >> no. actually last year i drove to boston when the winter storm started here in virginia. so like i was driving, and i was seeing the snow coming. so it was like i'm racing with the snow. so it doesn't make they nervous. >> reporter: and back here now live. again, what we have been hearing is the timing of the snowfall could be tricky because it could fall during the morning rush. at 5:00 how much do local crews have in the snow budget this year?

you'll hear about that reporting live along the beltway, adam tuss news4. and you can see a familiar name on the ballast in the special election for marion barry barry's d.c. council seat. >> a very familiar name barry. his own son christopher barry says he wants to replace his father as the councilman representing ward 8 on the d.c. council. christopher barry at the board of elections, the 34-year-old still needs to get the necessary signatures in order to get his name on the ballast. that is for a special election on april 28th. and on the ballot his name would be printed as marion c. barry. this is of course to replace former mayor and council member marion barry who died at 78. there are 24 candidates who have expressed interest in taking that seat. christopher barry has not held elected office before. he owns a painting business and also has had a few run-ins with the law, previous arrests on drug and traffic charges. but he says he does have

political ambitions and plans to pursue them. he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. that's the latest from the live desk. >> first at 4:00 we're working to learn the name of a woman killed when her car went off the road and hit a tree in chopper 4 over the scene on south osborne road in rosary fill maryland here. emergency responders rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. there's tight security at the courthouse in boston as jury selection begins in the marathon bombing trial. the first group of 200 potential jurors stared intently at suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. this trial is unlike most other federal trials. the jury will not only decide tsarnaev's innocence or guilt, but also decide if he lives or dies. coming up right here at 4:30 we'll have a live report from boston and details on how tsarnaev acknowledged the people who could decide his fate.

we are on the eve of bob mcdonnell's sentencing for corruption and the judge in the case is holding hundreds of letters for support for the former virginia governor. the letters from family members, former colleagues and state lawmakers. more than 400 letters describe mcdonnell as an honorable man who did not intend to break the law. mcdonnell was found guilty of accepting gifts and loans from a businessman seeking support for his product. it is generating interest on our facebook page and of our follower they say the letters testify to the mcdonnell those folks knew not the man he really was. new details about that school bus crash that sent dozens of charles county students to the hospital this morning. one student had a broken nose when the bus rear ended another car. this happened near hawthorne and livingston roads in indianhead. 16 students on board. we know the bus driver hit a car that was stopped in front of it. the car then hit another vehicle in the oncoming lane and that

vehicle hit a third car. eric frein, ambushed to cops and terrorized a community for seven weeks, according to prosecutors. and today a judge ordered him to stand trial. in court, prosecutors played graphic surveillance video that showed two pennsylvania state troopers gunned down outside their barracks back in september. one was killed his widow sat quietly as the video played. frein hid out in the woods for 48 days before he was captured at an abandoned air field. he looked a lot different that day with facial cuts a goatee and shaggy hair. to a developing story. the u.s. ski team is said to be in shock this evening. two prospects training with the team were killed today in an avalanche in the austrian alps. the skiers identified as 20-year-old ronnie ber lack of new hampshire and 19-year-old bryce as tell of utah.

and we're staying on top of breaking news. richard jordan live with the latest from the live desk. richard? >> major delays right now. this is on the inner loop that is partially shut down. there is one lane getting by on the shoulder so not an actual lane open but traffic is moving on the shoulder, just past the accident scene here on kenilworth avenue. this was a truck and a motorcycle that collided there. one person suffering some serious injuries had to be taken to the hospital to the trauma center by ambulance there. but you've still got the backup traffic there, held beyond just the crash site here because the wreckage is still there in the middle of the road. you do s trickle down there on the right shoulder trying to get past. but there is still major backup. and we expect that will be the case for the foreseeable future at this point as the accident investigation is just getting

look at that. this is the current temperature up there. minus 2 in minneapolis, minnesota. you've got 3 in chicago. but with the wind and some snow even occurring there, not great conditions. at least we've got the cold without the snow. but we're going too get snow early tomorrow morning. let's talk about radar what's on it right now. it is dry, and one of the things i really want to stress is that it is going to be dry for this evening. it's going to be dry until the other side of midnight. so your driving impact forecast with the snow developing and moving in around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. leaves us with some snow-covered roads already far out west say around 68 the system will be moving in from west to east. snow will likely between 6:00 and 8:00. the temperature, 25 degrees, so roads easily impacted early tomorrow morning. as a matter of fact that snow really starts shutting down and

really diminishing after 3:00 a.m. to noontime. here's a look at the future. i can show the snow moving in, warrenton warrenton, luray, hagerstown just west of frederick seeing snow by 4:00 a 5:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m., covers the area. this is going to be a fine powdery, dry snow. the secondary roads when it comes down could make for sli rush. up until 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. after that occasional snow showers, and flurries for the remainder of the day tomorrow. and we may see a little bit of sunshine by the time the sun sets. here's what we're expecting around clinton, a half to an inch enough to cause trouble early tomorrow morning. 1 to 2 inches lovettsville bluemont mt. airy and frederick, too. so the impact forecast moderate with snow likely on some roads.

possibly until about noontime tomorrow. the high just 36. snow likely here. then it's the cold that moves in. for wednesday and thursday hanging on a little bit for friday. the low temperature early wednesday morning, 24 degrees. but it is going to be windy. we could see flurries coming through. wind gusts over 30 miles per hour. and that puts those wind chills at times wednesday and thursday subzero readings. so that's when that cold up in canada is also to show up. we'll take you hour by hour and show the wind chills and what you can expect in your neighborhood. >> thanks. in today's news for your health most parents know that having a television in a child's bedroom can interfere with their sleep. smartphones and tablets are apparently just as bad. california researchers asked 2,000 fourth and seventh

tomorrow morning. wind chills across the area in the low 20s to around 30 degrees. now we expect to see some very, very low wind chill readings coming midweek. meanwhile, look at the temperatures starting out early tomorrow morning. cold enough easily to sustain snow. 23 culpeper manassas. 25 in d.c. and our temperature high for the day, just above freezing. we'll have more on that cold that comes after the snow in just a little bit. >> veronica thank you. jury selection in the boston bombing case is you said under way now in a federal courtroom, miles from the site of the attack. federal prosecutors will ask for the death penalty if there is a conviction but that is months away. we go live to jay gray outside the courthouse in boston. jay? >> reporter: hey there, good evening, jim. despite multiple requests to either move or delay the start of the trial, as you say, jury selection began this morning, a process that included the suspect in the case.

the marathon bombing trial began under heavy security this morning, officers surrounding the motor vehiclely federal courthouse. as many as 500 prospective jurors shared an assembly room with the suspect in the case 21-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. tsarnaev seemed to smirk as he took his seat at the defense table and listened as judge o'toole gave brief instructions to the potential jurors before each filled out a questionnaire. attorneys in the court will review the forms, eliminate those ineligible and begin questioning the groups of 20 late next week. >> we try to produce a jury that can fairly and impartially render a verdict, and give a punishment that considers all options, including the death penalty. and life without patrol. >> reporter: tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to the bombing that killed three and injured 260 during the 2013 boston marathon and to the

murder of m.i.t. police officer sean collier a few days aoffter the attack. judge o'toole announced today opening statements will begin on arrest around january 26 and expects the trial to last three to four months. now, if that time line stands it means the trial will likely still be going on during this year's marathon. live in boston jay gray news4. >> thank you, jay. "new york times" reporter james ricin took the stand in alexandria today and it's what he did not say that's making news. he was ordered to appear in court to hammer out what questions he would be willing to answer if he is forced to testify next week at the trial of former cia officer jeffrey sterling. sterling is accused of leaking classified information to risen for a book he wrote in 2006 called "state of war." today on the stand, risen refused to answer any questions that might help prosecutors identify his sources. the new congress convenes

tomorrow with republicans in control of the house and senate. house speaker john boehner is expected to win re-election to his leadership post and he will command the largest republican majority in congress in 84 years. president obama can expect challenges on his health care law, recent immigration actions and new sanctions on iran. he has vowed, though to make more use of his veto pin. he's only used that power twice in six years. cheers and applause inside a miami courtroom today as florida becomes the 36th state to legalize same-sex marriage. the judge found florida's ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. the county clerk began issuing marriage licenses immediately, and the first couples got married in miami this afternoon. same-sex marriages are expected to begin statewide after midnight tuesday. that's when a separate ruling by a federal judge takes effect. lots of people are thankful this afternoon for their nbc washington push alerts that warned of an accident this morning on i-95.

the cargo ship is expected to be stuck leaning more than 50 degrees for several days. you see it there. in an effort to save the ship the captain began grounding it shortly after it left dock. it was carrying 1400 vehicles. no oil is thought to have leaked from the ship though. officials are working to learn what caused the incident and to recover the vessel with as little disruption to the environment as possible. no word yet on any damage to the vehicles that were on board that ship. tomorrow voters in virginia's 34th district will decide who replaces barbara comstock who is now in congress. the district extends from eastern loudoun county to the spring hill area of fairfax county. republican craig pareso is an

air force veteran. he says he'll support conservative values and push for improvements in education and tax policy. he is being challenged by democrat kathleen murphy, a former high-level staffer on capitol hill who runs her own consulting firm. she is married with four children and has worked with an organization that teaches women in developing countries how to become political leaders. the number of people trying to take guns on board planes is at an all-time high. more than 2,000 firearms were confiscated by tsa agents last year alone, up 20% from 2013. most guns were loaded at the time. when while the trend is so scary to some one security analyst believes it might simply be a case of travelers forgetting the rules. >> i don't necessarily think it's cause for alarm. i think if you live in a state where there are more restrictionive gun laws, you're not going to have as many guns coming through the checkpoint

and 11:00 p.m. fairly mostly clear sky now. clouds will be on the increase. especially as we get to 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. and, again, the radar also quiet now throughout the area. around 3:00 4:00 a.m. the snow will be moving in and in the pink these are the locations we'll see some of the highest amounts of snow. morgantown and areas of garrett county western maryland just around frostburg, elkins 2 to 3 inches here in the areas in blue hagerstown frederick, just around leesburg. winchester to petersburg 1 to 2 inches of snow here. so that will take you around 72. and warrenton, d.c. areas around waldorf, warrenton, as well as marshal, about a half inch to an inch. but again it's all about the time that it's going to be falling. and that will be early on 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. up until 10:00 a.m. maybe as late as noon. we could hold on. at times, there could be some moderate snow falling that could limit visibilities for a while

too. again, more snow to the north and west. and that means travel then. we give you cautionary light. watch your speed, slick conditions on the fine powdery snow. exercising outdoors really it's an inside kind of exercising type of day for tomorrow. and certainly the warm coat needed if you're going to be out and about. but an even warmer coat you're going to need if that's possible or just layer up even more come mid part of this week. this is auto look at the high temperatures tomorrow. just over freezing by the afternoon. a real concern early part of the day. but i think we're going to wish doug we had these types of temperatures for the mid part of the week. because very brutal wind chill temperatures are coming up and you're there to take us hour by hour. >> obviously we're getting our first snowfall of the season but it's really going to be the real first arctic cold that i think makes the bigger story over the next couple days. we'll show what's happening. first off, yesterday, we hit a high 67 degrees.

government. bad weather, choppy seas have hampered the search making it hard for divers to get to large objects spotted at the bottom of the sea. nbc's katy tur has the latest on the search from indonesian. >> reporter: searchers say they may have spotted one of the key pieces of the plane, specifically the tail. it's not confirmed now. but if it is and didn't break too much on impact they could find the black boxes within. it's now been more than a week since areas lost contact with radar and crashed into the java sea. still no visual on the bulk of the wreckage. divers repeatedly thwarted by rough cease and low visibility. weather conditions so uncooperative, searchers are even having trouble with the auto tonnous sub ma between. news as one team may have found the tail section which would likely still house the black boxes. the head of the indonesian search and rescue said our difficulty is now to locate the black box.
