and bob mcdonald's sister -- >> he's just keeping positive. he's a man of great character. >> -- alternatives to prison for the former virginia governor. >> news 4 at 11:00 starts now. first tonight we have some snow coming but it's not the amount that matters so much. it's the timing. i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. by 5:00 in the morning, some of us could be seeing snow, and it's cold enough for that snow to stick to the roads. all of this as kids are back at cool and winter vacations are ending. tonight we saw drivers gassing up and getting ready. >> we'll tell you what crews are doing to treat the roads in a minute. but we begin with a forecast. doug how much and when? >> well the big thing here, we're not going to see a lot in the way of snow, the butbut all during the morning rush. radar is clear, but once again you don't have to go too far west to see where the snow is coming from. it's a clipper-like system from

the chicago area expecting upwards of three to five inches. this will make its way our way. the leading edge now into portions of west virginia. because of that and because of the cold temperatures we have the winter weather advisory in effect are if prince william county. shenandoah you've been add into the advisory. it lasts through the 1:00 hour tomorrow as we expecting the snow across portions of the area. between 5:00 a.m. and noon more to the north and west. plus we're not just talking about snow. talking about the coldest air so far this season. >> thank you, doug. our team coverage continues now with jackie bensen live in rockfield. crews will start loading up in the middle of the night. >> we know that even a little bit of snow can cause big problems during rush hour.

tomorrow morning's rush hour is expected to be very different from tonight's cold but dry evening commute. here's what's been done so far in preparation. in maryland crews pre-treated major roads with salt which is supposed to prevent the initial bond of snow and ice on the pavement. in virginia about 500 trucks will be treating roads with salt and sand and begin to plow once two inches of snow is accumulated. some roads in loudon county have already been treated with salt. crews applied a mixture to help prevent freezing. at a gas station in gaithersburg gaithersburg some were filling up tonight to give themselves extra time to get to work tomorrow. >> get ready for it. making sure it's backed up tomorrow. >> i'm from massachusetts. i know what snow is. i know how to drive in it. >> i don't expect it to snow

that much. they always say it's going to snow but it's whatever. >> your best bet tomorrow morning, leave yourself a little extra time so that you can get to work on time. live in rockville, jackie bensen news 4. breaking news out of new learned that two new york city police officers have been shot in the bronx. our affiliate in new york says it's unclear right now what led to the shooting. it happened just after 10:30 tonight. those officers are now at the hospital. firefighters say the officers are expected to be okay. we'll have updates on all this on news 4 today that begins at 4:26 in the morning. the drop in temperatures could lead to another spike in flu cases. cold weather tends to keep more people indoors. students are now back in school. both things add to the potential for germs to be spread. today the centers for disease control said this flu season could peak in january instead of

february or march as usually happens. to minimize the spread of the flu, holy cross hospitals in silver spring and germantown are implementing new restrictions for hospital visitors. we're learning about deadly crashes. in rockville, police say a 19-year-old hit while crossing the road has died. police just re-opened that road in the last half hour. the driver in that crash did stay on the scene. on the rails, regular marc service is expected to resume tomorrow after a train hit and killed a man in gaithersburg this afternoon. service on the line the brunswick line was stopped for a while. investigators are still trying to figure out why the man was on the tracks. it is the second time in a week that somebody has been hit by a train on the brunswick line. another deadly crash shut down lanes on the inner loop of the belt way.

a motorcycle and tractor trailer collided. the motorcyclist was killed. no word yet on the cause of the crash or the victim's identity. here hearing tonight by the father of a man shot and killed by police. john geer is his name. he died 17 months ago. today for the first time, police released information about that shooting including the name of the officer who shot him. shomari stone now with more on the delay and the family's reaction. shomari? >> caller: well jim, tonight john geer's father and frustrated. he's felt this way for more than a year. he still has more questions. >> i still want answers. >> reporter: tonight don geer reacts only on 4 to fairfax county police releasing the name of the officer who shot and killed his son john geer in a 30-minute police stand-off. officer adam torres an eight-year veteran. >> that answers one of many

many questions we have in our minds. >> reporter: geer has waited 16 months to find out what happened to his 46-year-old son in august of 2013. >> we have been doing everything that we can think of to try to get information out of the county. >> reporter: and right now, i'm bringing you closer to the scene. we are actually standing near the front door where this happened. according to the police chief, he said that when geer started lowering his hands, at one point during the negotiations that's when officer torres fired one him. tonight i talked to the attorney representing the geer family, and he said that geer's hands were up like this. they came down by his ears. that's when officer torres fired. he said because they came down by his ears that makes this an unjustified shooting. >> this only on 4 video shows john geer standing at the front door of his springfield, virginia home. a s.w.a.t. team had surrounded the house. investigators a the mother of

geer's two kids warned there were weapons in the home and police say they received a report that geer threatened to use weapons against police. >> i was there at the time. i witnessed the whole thing. >> reporter: don geer and his lawyer want more info. 911 dispatch calls, witness statements internal affairs documents. >> hopefully within the next few weeks, some of this stuff will be released. >> reporter: and torres is on administrative duty pending the outcome of the department of justice and the fairfax county police internal affairs investigation. as for the family of john geer well they have filed a $12 million lawsuit against the police department. a civil lawsuit. live in fairfax county i'm shomari stone, news 4. new at 11:00, just hours before former virginia governor bob mcdonnell is sentenced, his sister tells how the family is preparing for a difficult day. he's facing anything from ten

years or more in prison to community service after his conviction for public corruption. tomorrow he'll make a final plea to the judge in richmond. mcdonnell's sister maureen, who shares the same name as his wife says he will face whatever comes his way. >> i think we have to work through tomorrow and have the legal team do what they must do but really hope for full vindication in the long haul. bob is an incredible man, the most honest and ethical man i've ever met. >> bob mcdonnell's wife maureen will be sentenced next month. as soon as tomorrow's sentence is delivered, we'll send a breaking news alert from the nbc washington app. you can also watch our live streaming coverage right from your phone. a well-known conservative fund-raiser has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography. his name is michael san tanni. he was arrested in october after police found more than 3300

images of child pornography on a computer in his home in d.c. a hidden camera was also found in his home bathroom with a view of the shower there. he worked for an outfit called base connect, a company that has raised millions in campaign funds for conservative groups and candidates. he'll be sentenced in april and he's facing up to 20 years in prison. we could soon learn whether d.c. impressed olympic officials. the u.s. olympic committee is expected to announce the winning american bid on thursday. d.c. is competing with boston san francisco, and los angeles. the winning city will then compete with finalists from around the world. the international olympic committee will choose a host city in 2017. two u.s. skiers who had hoped to compete in the next winter olympics will not get the

chance. berlack and astle were promising aspects and they were both killed today in an avalanche in austria. four other members of the ski team skied out of the avalanche and escaped unhurt. officials say an avalanche alert had been for the area. congress is back in session tomorrow with republicans in charge of the house and the senate. on the agenda a showdown with democrats over the long-delayed keystone xl pipeline. the republicans want to push it through the house later this week, and then through the senate where there now appears to be enough votes to pass it. how speaker john boehner in the meantime will face a challenge from louie gohmert of texas, in his bid to remain speaker. new mayor muriel bowser is pushing for d.c. voting rights. he met with eleanor holmes norton now that both houses of congress are in republican hands, getting movement on voting rights could be even

questions that could allow them to decide the fate of the accused boston marathon bomber. jury selection began today and is expected to take at least several weeks. federal prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted. intense security surrounded the courthouse two miles from where the bombs went off. tsarnaev is also accused of killing a police officer days after the attack. the parents of a boy shot and killed in cleveland, ohio are expected to talk new details in that case tomorrow. tamir rice was shot and killed in november. officers say they thought he had a real gun, but it turned out to be a toy. the family is concerned that the outside agency investigating the shooting is led by a former cleveland police officer. a grand jury could get that case in the coming weeks. disrespectful. that's how new york mayor bill

de blasio describes the actions of police officers during two recent funerals for fallen colleagues. many officers turned their backs to de blasio as he spoke during the funerals for rafael ramos and wenjian liu, the two officers gunned down in their cruiser last month. the city's commissioner echoed the mayor's reaction. >> it's a time when the city feels tremendous respect for the nypd some individual officers showed disrespect to the families and to the people of this city. >> i just don't understand it. what was the need in the middle of that ceremony to engage in a political action? >> police unions have blamed de blasio for creating an anti-police atmosphere with his response to protests over police conduct. and again, two more police officers have been shot tonight in the bronx. our sister station in new york reports they're expected to survive. stay with us on air and on your smart phone for the latest in that incident overnight and

tomorrow morning. family members visiting a cemetery in virginia found that something was missing at hundreds of grave sites. they found it over the holidays. deputies say more than 200 bronze vases were stolen from headstones at the memorial park cemetery in king george the weekend before christmas. you can see what the vases look like in the background of this photo. deputies say they are worth about $250 apiece. investigators are asking anyone with information to contact them. >> doug's back with more on this nasty weather approaching us overnight. >> yeah and i think the bigger factor here is going to be the cold that follows. i mean we are talking some brutal cold out there tonight. everybody wondering about the snow. a lot of kids going, do i need to do my homework? yes. do the homework. maybe a delay or two, but i'm not expecting much in the way of cancellations. out towards the airport, it's

already cold. temperatures at 30 degrees. we're below freezing. look at the windchill. now down to 20. so we're talking about some really cold temperatures as we move through the morning hours. look at the rest of the numbers. already down to 21 in gaithersburg 27 manassas 27 winchester 24 in martinsburg. you walk outside your house now, the ground already frozen under your feet. that tells you that once the snow starts it will stick. that's why i think we'll have accumulating snow in most locations. radar all clear until you go west. it's inching ever so close to our region. snow around cincinnati moving into portions of west virginia. we're only a few hours out before it starts moving in for us. back towards chicago and illinois and indiana, heavier snow for that area. winter weather advisory in effect. everybody back to the north and west. doesn't include areas like

fredericksburg or southern maryland. but this is what we're expecting. snow moderate at times, especially between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. that's why i think we have the biggest impacts from this because of the fact that the morning commute could be a little bit of a problem. but fine and powdery snow as we are on the cold side. could see some slick spots. i expect the secondary roads and the neighborhood roads to be the place that we have should issues. 5:00 a.m. notice where the snow is coming towards, d.c. back to leesburg winchester the darker shades of purple indicate the heavier snow. around 7:00 fredericksburg lexington park mechanicsville no snow for you. most of it will stay to the north. back towards front royal and the gainesville area and manassas. but even around the 9:00 hour starting to see some showers, but most will stay to the north. that's why we think most of this activity will be to the north. few flurries but after about 11:00 in the morning, most of it

is about done. to the south, maybe a dusting if that around leonardtown, towards chesapeake city towards fredericksburg. half inch for waldorf. one to two inches in fredericks fredericksburg and leesburg. maximum of three in these areas. two down to the south. that's all i can see in montgomery county. two, maybe three inches for you on the high side. same thing towards marshall. so we are going to see some snow and it will accumulate. this is the reason temperatures got in the low 20s. 21 in la platea early tomorrow morning. next four days 36 tomorrow for a high. 28 on wednesday. 24 on thursday. that's a high temperature. but take a look at this. you mentioned the wind. we could see winds upwards of 20 to 30 miles per hour. we're talking dangerously cold

they go on to win it 78-67. all right, so it's been a very busy 2015 for coaches in the nfl. tonight we're hearing that former redskins head coach mike shanahan and his son kyle shanahan have interests from three different teams to come in together as a father-son duo again. meanwhile here in washington the search continues for the redskins' defensive coordinator. this thursday wade philips, the formers broncos, bills and cowboys head coach will interview for the job. there's a family connection to the redskins. son wes is tight ends coach for the burgundy and gold. some other guys expected to interview this week ed donatell the 49ers defensive backs coach since 2011. he's been a defensive coordinator before with the packers and the falcons. and san diego chargers line backers coach joe berry is interviewing tomorrow. he's a hot name. while he's doing a great job in san diego, he was the defensive coordinator of the detroit lions
