s have been pretreated so that's good news. we are not expecting major accumulation on the major roads, but the side streets and sidewalks could be getting slick as the snow continues to fall as they have not been treated. i should also mention north on 270, you can see the volume increasing in the southbound direction as a lot of people head out for work. we have seen a lot of clouds headed this the southbound direction. they are not doing anything as of yet patrolling the streets waiting for the snow to fall as we get enough. then they will spring into action here but the roads pretreated and so far looking good. back to you guys. thank you for the heads-up on that megan. and this is the first big test for area d.o.t. crews that have been preparing since last night. in virginia 500 trucks are on standby right now in fairfax and loudoun county. loudoun county pretreated the roads with salt and other counties are using salt and sand. plowing will start once two

are getting very light snow. almost just flurlys lylyryiesflurries. they are small flakes sticking in the metro. farther to the west it's coming down in the shenandoah valley. and we have a band of heavy snow into central and west virginia out of southern ohio. that's all tracking off to getting closer to the metro area off and on with bands of light to moderate snow between now and noontime. snow will be likely as we have slippery untreated roads. all this ending by noontime. the winter weather advisory is in effect for all the counties as we see here in the lavender color for all of northern virginia. most of west virginia much of maryland and the district. it will be a factor until 1:00 this afternoon. just a dusting to areas to our south from southern maryland and near fredericksburg over to charlottesville. a half inch to an inch in the nearby suburbs stretching into the whennen doe virginia wall lee. northern whennenshenandoah valley

one to two inches on the untreated surfaces. and the high ridges near the mountains, there could be two to five inches as that continues into this afternoon and tonight. but all that ending near the metro area around noontime. another update coming up as the situation is changing minute by minute at 4:41. melissa, how are the roads? the roads are okay but we have a little construction 66 westbound at nutley street with road work with the right lane blocked. overall, everything is moving nicely in prince george's county. no road work being reported there at this point. taking a little bit of a look to the north everything is moving along quite nicely. the beltway at colesville road no problems here. megan mcgrath is going to be driving around all morning. she was just on 270 headed northbound near montgomery avenue. she was seeing the traffic pick up a bit heading north, so she will be driving around for us at

95 in virginia at dale boulevard looking good this morning. we'll have more coming up in a couple of minutes. and at the live desk here with a developing story out of the bronx. two officers shot after responding to a robbery at a grocery store. what we know now is both are in critical but shooting the suspects took off and then carjacked two women. the men were able to get away so the search is on right now. meanwhile, a gun was found at the scene. aaron? thank you, angie. 4:34. a 19-year-old woman was hit and killed by a woman in rockville crossing the road near the shopping center last night. she had gotten off a bus and was walking home with her mother. the driver of the crash stayed at the scene taken to the hospital. hiere not serious. 4:35. today is the day former virginia governor bob mcdonnell will learn whether he performs community service or serve time in prison. he's scheduled to be sentenced this morning.

richard jordan is here in the studio to breakdown what can happen today. >> reporter: bob mcdonnell and his wife maureen were found guilty of corruption. maureen won't be sentenced until next month but bob mcdonnell could be looking at ten years in prison today. that's what prosecutors believe it should be. his lawyers are asking for leniency saying he should do thousands of hours of community service instead. hundreds of mcdonnell's family members and friends wrote to the judge including his sister to tell the judge her thoughts. >> something i'm not sure came out during the trial, which was the kind of man bob mcdonnell really is. even the random acts of kindness. >> reporter: before the sentencing mcdonnell has a chance to make a final plea to the judge. that is later this morning. you can follow on twitter or download the nbc washington app to learn the ruling just moments

right now temperatures are very cold. we're down into the 20s. so it is sticking. and we're seeing here on the storm team 4 radar getting this light snow now in prince george's county montgomery fairfax and the district. and just a few flurries to the south. off to the west getting snow very light in northern loudoun county and northern falkier and up to frederick county. this is all coming in from the midwest. it's a fast moving area of low pressure zipping through the morning commute. and the total amounts by the time it tapers off around noontime generally a half inch to an inch across northern virginia the district the nearby suburbs. farther north and west up to a couple inches in the medium blue zone. and this includes the panhandle of west virginia. way out in maryland and the highlands of virginia we could see five inches of snow as this moves on through. so just enough snow for it to stick around the metro area on the untreated surfaces the side

streets and sidewalks that could be very slippery with temperatures very cold. we are just near 20 degrees north and west of us. the metro area in the low to mid-20s. and there's the national airport. you can see a little bit of the light snow beginning to fall. sunrise at 7:27. we'll have this through the morning commute. and some flurries around by noontime. and then ending during the afternoon with cloudiness. layer up this morning. wear the warmest winter gear. i'm back in ten minutes with another update on the situation changing minute by minute. melissa, how are the roads? here are the roads out in western maryland first. obviously snow covered near savage mountain. 270 at montrose our area right now is seeing a little bit of light snow falling but nothing accumulating on the roadways at this point this morning. 270 at folks are headed southbound. no problem there. megan mcgrath was headed northbound and saw a lot of folks headed southbound. so we'll look at that early.

we are seeing the first snowy commute of 2015. a live look at the roads in maryland. we have already heard from the federal government. as soon as we did we pushed that out on our app an hour ago. the government is open but you have the option for unscheduled leave or telework. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is on the beltway near river road in montgomery county in the storm team 4x4. >> reporter: good morning. we do have a snow-covered road here. this is the inner loop of the beltway right now. you can definitely tell there's minor accumulation on the sides of the roads. the travel lanes are in good shape with quite a few salt and sand trucks and chemical treating trucks on the roads. we have been as far west to route 50 in the fairfax area. this is out to route 50 and back in northern maryland on the inner loop. there's definitely a lot of chemical being put down on the

county. >> the gere family filed a $12 million lawsuit against the fairfax county police department. he was killed only after he put his hands down during the standoff that day. family members visiting the cemetery in virginia found something was missing at hundreds of gravesites over the holidays. sheriff's deputies say more than 200 bronze vases were stolen from the head stones from memorial park in king george's county. you can see what the vases look like in the background of this photo. deputies say they are worth $250 a piece. the deputies are asking anyone who knows any information to call them. this man was arrested back in september after police found 3300 images of video and child pornography on the computer in his home. a camera was also found in his

home with a view of the shower. he will be sentenced in april and face up to 20 years in prison. we're learning more about fairfax county's case against jesse mathews who faces rape charges in the county. prosecutors say a gag order is not needed in this case. matthew's attorneys are requesting one. matthew's was moved to the fairfax county jail this weekend ahead of his appearance in court later this week. the judge will move on the gag order and camera request. mathews was also linked to the death of morgan harrington. state troopers say they clocked worth going 105 on the beltway last year. he was sentenced to ten years in

jail and has not served the time. his new court date is february 3rd. the polls will open in a few hours in virginia's 33rd district. democrat kathleen murphy is still in the running. the 34th district extends from loudoun county to the springfield area of fairfax county. polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00. the sopson of the late marion barry wants to fill his council seat in d.c. he sent out a tweet saying quote, the legacy continues. christopher barry is 34 years old owning a small painting company. he said he always wanted to carry on his father's work. barry filed papers yesterday. one challenge may be his record. the younger barry has been arrested three times on drug and traffic charges. he's currently on probation. the special election is april 28th. today is a weather alert day. we'll go to storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein.

>> it is. it is snowing here in northwest washington. we are looking outside and seeing it start to stick. behind us is the camera of the national airport where it's snowing. all this area in the gray and the white on the storm team 4 radar, that is light snow. and it is cold. it is sticking to any untreated surface this morning, from the shenandoah valley across northern virginia the district and the bay. the light snow continues to move off to the north and east. nothing falling in southern maryland yet and in the northern neck but it will likely begin to move in later on because the whole system is tracking from the midwest all the way down to the atlantic coast. it is moving very quickly, too. most of the snow coming in just some bands from time to time. should be out of here by around noontime. look at the temperatures holding near 20 degrees now. shenandoah valley east of there near the metro area, the low to mid-20s. and it's in the upper 20s near the chesapeake bay. it will be sticking with a big

area under a winter weather advisory until 1:00. all the counties in purple from the west virginia panhandle, shenandoah valley and most of maryland. the winter weather advisory in effect until 1:00 for snow moderate at times. one to two inches and we'll get the slippery untreated surfaces very quickly. it will include your street and sidewalk. here's the timing on the snow continuing to move in during the morning hours. as of 8:00 to 9:00 still snowing across northern virginia maryland west virginia. continuing to move off to the north and east. and much of the snow ending by noon time and tracking off to the northwest. we have lingering snow showers out in the mountains to give them higher amounts there as it moves through. they could pick up as much as up to five inches there. closer to washington a couple of inches farther north and west ch nearby suburbs, a half inch to an inch by the time it ends at noontime. the impact for driving is going

to be slick on untreated surfaces. the afternoon commute will be drying out and getting above freezing during the afternoon as the roads dry out. keep up with all this on the storm team 4 weather app. we'll have it all throughout the day today. windy and cold tomorrow. very cold on thursday. and a bit milder getting into the weekend with highs in the 30s remaining dry. melissa is keeping up with all the roads. and it's sticking on 270. it is sticking. 70 at 270, the interchange, you can see some of this snow here sticking on the side of the roadway. all them have been treated, of course but still an issue this morning. the beltway at river road all the folks on the outer loop more volume than we typically see this time of the day. it was coming down very lightly when i came in earlier at the beltway and river road. so it is covering the road just a little bit to make it tricky. a wider look at things overall, everything is flowing nicely. we'll keep our fingers crossed that it stays this way.
