the d.c. area and that could make for some slippery conditions especially on those sidewalks and side streets. those conditions mean a lot of schools an the federal government are taking extra precautions. >> the delays list is growing. but work for the federal government it is opening two hours late today. you can also telework or take unscheduled leave. schools in loudoun county closed. they were originally on a two hour delay. schools in d.c. fairfax, montgomery and proins are on a two hour delay. >> in maryland hour and an a run dell and charles, calvert and saint mary's all opening two hours late. >> spotsylvania shenandoah culpepper also delayed two hours. fredericksburg city schools starting two hours late.

cold air we've had. as a result we have a freezing rain advisory all these counties in pink. metro area until 9:00 this morning. so lingering freezing rain icy sidewalks, steps and parking lots and slow morning commute. it will only get worse. everything is wet. most areas above freezing. faps have an umbrella and dress warmly. it will be a chilly cold rain. you won't need the sunglasses. it will rain into the afternoon as temperatures get in to the upper 30s with wet roads all the way into the evening. a look at when the rain finally ends over the next 24 hours, that's at 6:41. this morning road crews away

our area have been putting down salt trying to get rid of any ice. megan mcgrath is on 28 in sterling. >> reporter: those road crews have done a great job. we're seeing pretty good conditions on the major roadways. we have driven from leesburg to the sterling area since we last spoke to you. off behind me, that is route 28. traffic is moving at speed. we still have a light rain falling in the area but the good news here is that it is warm enough on so that we are not seeing the freeze. the crews work crews have been out all night long. we have seen many, many trucks out there and as well as actually laying down chemicals and salt. so we're seeing pretty good conditions on the major roads. there is still the potential for freezing. and whenever it even just rains, thingseirairrryiry out there.

an accident of course here this morning 270 at middlebrook road we have a couple lanes off to the right blocked. folks getting by the last side. southbound a little bit of rubber necking. otherwise looking like a typical morning commute right now as you look at the beltway, 66 no real problems. 95 looking good as well. somebody coming into the station 06 on 66 said no problem out of gainesville, only sloewing down near 123. sprank spray on the windshield. we have a slowdown approaching the beltway on 4 pennsylvania avenue. going to figur. 95 in maryland just fine. potomac eastbound, democracy boulevard at dem l down. at ter sister nat is gains were romanocaruso.

pockets of pink, that is where it is icing up a bit. a little bit of freezing rain western loudoun county into northern fauquier. right around washington, eastern suburbs, prince george's county an a anne arundel, all wet with rain. national airport, temperatures well bow freezinge before freezing. steady rain and in the 30s and fog this afternoon. staying in the upper 30s with the rain all the way until midnight. finally ends after midnight this time tomorrow morning near 30. warming trend to the weekend a look at that coming up at 6:51. new problem 66 east lee highway, exit ramp shut down making some calls to figure out what is going on. travel times for you, otherwise actually looking pretty good here. still in virginia 95 north to the beltway, 26 minutes. 395 north bound no problems. 66 east looking good as well.

270 south a little slow down 270 because of that crash at middle broke road. rubber necking heading southbound. outer loop not so bad. starting today, you may hear some ads about school funding. for the next couple of weeks maryland teachers union will be running a spot calling on governor elect larry hogan and e lawmakers to keep a strong investment in schools. maryland is facing a $750 million budget deficit for the next fiscal year. hogan will submit his budget to lawmakers next week. things have been pretty smooth on the beltway and the highways as this winter weather rolls through. but you could encounter some problems in your neighborhood. the conditions our crews are finding on those side streets. >> more team coverage ahead including parts of the d.c. area most lickly tokely to see icy conditions.

landing on ground that is frozen or subfreezing. and it's creating a layer of ice. the area you see in pink including frederick county virginia and frederick unty maryland, northern fauquier, we were loudoun. elsewhere, a steadier rain beginning to warm pavement up, so as a result we'll have temperatures warming into the 30s later this afternoon. as we check away the region we have chuck bell live outx 4. >> and as tom mentioned, our 4 by 4 is out on the roads. chuck bell has been traveling in maryland and virginiand joins us live along the inner loop of the beltway in fairfax. >> reporter: good morning. we are a cold and wet 35 degrees this morning. inner loop as you mentioned, authority bound here getting up towards the tysons corner area temperature here now is at 34.5

degrees. and we've been steadily at or above the freezing mark for almost all of our trip. the only places where we encountered below freezing temperatures were in the western parts of frederick county maryland out toward boones borough, myersville. there were some places where we noticed temperatures below .there were some places where we notice. closer it to theto the metro area it's falls as rain. so there is warmer air aloft. so the heavier steadier rain will mix some of the warm he air down and help with the warm-up today. so basically if you don't have ice on your road right now, you woebl probably won't need to worry about temperatureit. but rain tends to cause problems. so take it easy out there.

mayor bowser deployed the know team more than 200 plows are on the roads and you're being asked to treat your own sidewalks. leaf and holiday tree collections are suspended today. the maryland state highway administration wants you to stay off of roads. asking that you delay or cancel early morning travel. most schools on a two hour delay this morning, so that will help. crews have treated the roads with salt brine. the administration also asking to you choose public transportation instead of driving if you can. not everybody is hearing the message. the icy weather is causing delays on the roads including i-270. molette green continues our live team coverage in germantown. >> reporter: good morning. yeah we're in a single family home community just off shady grove road here in derwood. basically in the street, i'm just seeing slushiness and wetness. but as you come over here to

they are getting some of that freezing rain that tipscontinues to fall. and the freezing rain will be around for another hour or two right around the metro area. and then it will get above freezing just about everywhere. most of the locations that we will have are above freezing temperatures right around washington points to our south. that is where the above freezing temperatures are going to continue to really keep us much better with our roads just staying wet as well as now just in washington and prince george's county, charles, st. mary's anne arundel, northern neck and fredericksburg. most of those election slocations, ground temperat a above freezing. finally the ground temperatures beginning to get above freezing. and as we get into the afternoon hours, we'll have our temperatures staying in the thirt.30s. we'll have it stay in the upper 30s overnight tonight.

the rain should end by around midnight tonight. and then by dawn tomorrow we'll be right around 30 degrees. and then partly sunny, a blustery wind developing during the day on tuesday falling back into the mid-20s by the late afternoon on tuesday. so another surge of cold air will be moving in. will be in place tuesday night and during the day on wednesday. a little disturbance passing just our south may give us a few scattered snow showers during the day on wednesday. staying below freezing all day with highs only around freezing and below freezing again on wednesday night. then thursday afternoon, finally we'll get before freezing and then a warming trend as we get toward the weekend. as we get into friday afternoon highs should be in the mid-40s and partly cloudy. saturday and sunday partly cloudy each of those days with temperatures in the upper 40s and morning lows right around freezing. melissa has had multiple accidents this morning. anything else going on? >> 270 northbound at middle brooke has gotten out of the way, but we heard from fire and

rescue saying this area 270 north and south middlebrook is a little bit slick. they're sending a truck out to get that taken care of for you. bw parkway into town 295, we're a little slow. prince george's county no major problems but slow inbound pennsylvania avenue 4 right there. not getting report of anything. looks like it could be just some slick roadways. 95 headed in to town, actually looking pretty good all the way through wood bridge. same thing headed out of town, 95 southbound right now. 66 at fairfax drive, had report of that closure of the ramp there at 29. not seeing anything on camera, but a little slow 66 headed into town this morning. beltway at colesville looking quite good. inner loop and outer loop a little bit of volume but again just be careful. a lot of the main roads have been treated and you're not seeing any major problems. but of course sidewalk driveways not the prettiest this morning. take your time. leave late if you can.

>> good advice. thank you. this morning road crews did do their jobs. they treated the roads to try to avoid any major ice buildup. we'll check in one last time with megan mcgrath in northern virginia. >> right now she's along route 28 in sterling. >> reporter: we're actually on the rampnokes boulevard. you can see the traffic is moving well on route 28. we've had light rain coming down for a while now but the good news is that it is just rain. we are not seeing it stick. we're not seeing icing up on the roadway here. so that is something to keep -- good news for computemuters. we had cold temperatures overnight, there were concerns about icy patches. but the crews were out in full force. we saw a lot of trucks out there on the major roadways. they pre-treated, they salted. and things are looking pretty good out there. now, keep in mind, though, that all you knee isuyou need rain to see some accidents on

the highways. and we are seeing that rain. keep your speeds down take it easy out there. but in terms of icing, at least for now we are seeing an improvement. megan mcgrath, news 4. want you to plan for regular schedules if you're riding the bus. metro will have full weekday service. vre pre-treated stations and is operating on a normal schedule. marc trains in maryland will have a full service schedule. trains at dickerson and barnesville stations are boarding from the opposite track, though and the 880 brunswick line train will leave 45 minutes later because of the federal government delay. >> the the steadier rain is here. and look at this just about all of virginia all the maryland covered in rain. those patches of pink that is where it is freezing up still on frozen ground. still a glaze of ice forming. northern fauquier county western loudoun, parts of frederick, montgomery northern
