nnel, the train shut down and there was a lot of smoke and people had to evacuate off the train through the tunnel. >> reporter: i'm joi tim wilson from d.c. fire and ems. i understand you have tom updated information for us that there were some injuries people who were taken away by ambulance. >> yes, jackie. at the moment we've transported up to six patients with various injuries one serious and others with minor injuries. >> reporter: and a lot of it was due to panic, people seemed to be having trouble breathing. >> correct. it's a tough situation, but our members were able to get to the scene and put the fire out, and, you know right now we're trying to determine exactly what the cause was. >> reporter: the fire being out is good information because that's one step towards getting the station open at rush hour. but, again, no feeling that the point for exactly what caused it? >> no feeling at the moment. it's still under investigation. >> reporter: all right. tim wilson for d.c. fire and ems. again, now, coming up on news4 at 6:00 we'll talk to some
5:01 pm
people who were on that train for those 40 minutes they tell us was very stressful, trying to figure out exactly what was going on. live in southwest, jackie bensen news4. more live team coverage with derrick ward down at ninth and main avenue the wharf on the waterfront. an evacuation point there. derrick, what are you seeing now? >> reporter: well, thing have sort of calmed down here nowhere near as i guess frenetic a scene up at the station and some of the station where is tg is. but i want you to look at the scene just a few minutes earlier. this is some video we shot when we first got here. this is at least one of those six people who were hospitalized that you just heard the gentleman talking about in jackie's story. now, we did see two people come out from an evacuation tunnel which is at this location shortly before that person was evacuated. they seemed to be okay and didn't appear to be in any sort of stress or anything like that. but, again, one person who appeared to be a firefighter
5:02 pm
smaflt wasas fa was taken away, a female firefighter. she did not seem to be in any sort of distress or outwardly injured but probably just overcome by smoke. we don't know again. there are a lot of questions to be answered here. but, again, this gives you a vast sense of how far we are and how vast the subway system is because we are several blocks now from this area where the entrance to l'enphant plaza is and to mt. vernon, where the backups are. again, we are probably over a tunnel and as you see here just as you see over here where the firefighters are, that raised platform that is where they were given access to the tunnel, where they brought some people out. those grates that you see in the street often, that is exactly what they are, over a tunnel some point in the infrastructure of the metro system. and again here out of the way almost in the middle of this construction site was a point of access and egress where people who needed to be brought out perhaps some reason or another
5:03 pm
could not be brought out through the normal points of access and egress at the station. again, firefighters are standing by her derrick ward news4. shuttle buss are running and helping move some of those passengers stuck on board the trains or inside other stations. >> darcy spencer continues our live coverage live at mt. vernon square. how kai kaye ottawaic is it there? >> reporter: it is pretty much chaotic and there are a lot of frustrated people. we talked to a lot of people inside the station. many had no idea there was smoke in the tunnel and xa what exactly was happening so communication has definitely been an issue for some of the folks. what you're seeing right here these are people standing on the sidewalk outside of the metro station basically waiting for one of the shuttle buses to show up. we have not seen any at this
5:04 pm
point. and wondering how they're going to get home tonight and not getting a lot of information, at least at this point. again, some of them not even realizing when they were told to get off the train here why that was happening. we'll talk to amber ferguson one of the very frustrated metro riders. >> hi. >> reporter: what is your situation? where are you coming from and trying to get to? >> i'm coming from work. my kids have to be picked up before 6:00. and i wasn't expecting any of this to happen and when i got off the train, nobody -- i was waiting for about five maybe seven minutes and nobody said anything so, i asked the transit lady and she gave me the directions to come um here for the shuttle buses. i don't see any shuttle buses. so i'm trying to figure out what my next step is so i school. >> has this ever happened before? >> not tho to this extent not to where i had to walk this far. because usually in situations like this the shuttle buses are already lined up right behind each other. you'll see them when you first come out the station, but you
5:05 pm
don't see anything. >> reporter: did anyone tell you there was a fire further down the line? >> i saw it on facebook. when i asked the transit lady what was going on she didn't tell me what was going on. she just told me where to go. so when i got on facebook i saw a post about a fire at l'enphant plaza station. so i have to get past l'enphant plaza station, so they told me to catch a shut from here to navy yard and get back on the train but i haven't seen a shuttle yet. >> reporter: how are people dealing with this? is there a lot of confusion? >> there's a lot of confusion but surprisingly enough everybody's not rowdy nape ear pretty much calm. i was making some new friends. we caulked up here together. >> making the best of the situation. >> i am. it's not as bad. the weather's not as bad as last week so that's a plus. >> reporter: amber ferguson thanks for sharing your experience. >> you're welcome. >> reporter: that's what you're seeing from all these people lined up on the sidewalk bait waiting for the shuttle bus so they can get on to the next stop get past l'enphant plaza. live from mt. vernon station, darcy spencer, news4.
5:06 pm
metro spokesman dan stessel joins us live. any idea what cawed this smoke? what's the best advice for metro riders to get home? >> the source has not been identified. the smoke plaza, probably a function of two thing, one, the tunnel fans were activated and they're designed to move smoke out of the station and that certainly has helped. but also third rail power has been deearn jiz sod the source of the smoke has anything to do with the electrified third rail that also would turn off the source of whatever's generating the smoke. that's under investigation, the primary focus over the last 90 minutes or so has been effecting an evacuation of the upper level of l'enphant plaza. the fire department completed that not too long ago, but the evacuations are completed at l'enphant plaza, the station remains closed. green and yellow service on the upper slesm suspended between
5:07 pm
navy yard and pentagon city on the south aendened mt. vernon square on the knot end.north end. no service between those points with shuttle buses substituting. there are regular route metro bus services as well as circumstance lay or the that may be a good option for folks. if you normally use l'enphant plaza and you're trying to get on the orange silver or blue lines, a short walk over the federal center southwest might be your best option. i should mention that those three lines that pas throughs lu thethh lower level of l'enphant pla are going through without stopping so if you can walk one station away you can get on the train and get home without delay on those three lines. but if you're a green or yellow customer tonight, you want to allow additional travel time and the possibility if you're traveling through downtown of alternate shuttle bus service. >> all this coming at the worst possible time. about how many people will go through this particular station. this is a very busy station for d.c. >> yeah. l'enphant plaza is certainly one of our top five stations not
5:08 pm
quite our busiest but it's up there and as a transfer station it is a critical location on the system and a terrible location for something like this to happen at the height of rush hour. easily we're talking numbers in the thousands. but the fact that the lower level lines, those orange silver blue lines are running just not stopping at l'enphant plaza does help mitigate the situation a little bit for riders traveling in either direction out of downtown tonight. >> all right. dan stessel, thanks so much. good luck. it's going to be a tough one. well, a lot of people are sending us pictures and posting pictures on social media from smoke in the stations to smoke on the trains. much more as the evening goes along. you can stay up to date if you're trying to get to metro on our nbc washington app. it's a messy night out there. it's raining. we had a rough morning. looks like a lot of you are having a rough evening. the bridge wrapped in fog.
5:09 pm
>> doug kammerer is watching it all and tracking the radar right now. doug what are you seeing? >> you can see the ice on the river as well. one thing to note everybody coming out of l'enphant plaza, they ear waiting for those buses, they're about to get some heavier rain. it's raining lightly downtown but here comes heavier rain through porss of fairfax county into the dist in the next 15 20 minutes. here's that dark area through fairfax county coming right across falls church and right in towards downtown in the next 15 to 20 minutes. everybody else seeing light shower activity. that will continue as we move on through the evening. we're not quite done just yet. we have to go through this area down toward roanoke. that will come through in about the next four to five hours. this will be something that stays with us through the rest of the night. then look back to the western part of our system. notice the snow. we're not going to get any of, that but what this tells us is there's colder air back to the west. current temperatures 39 degrees in d.c. on the chilly side but only 32 in pittsburgh. that's the colder air that will move in. tomorrow is going to be one very cold day. we'll talk much more about the
