pentagon city and mt. vernon square and now the fbi is assisting in the rescue and the investigation. >> we have team coverage with reporters blanketing the scene. jackie bensen is at the l'enphant plaza metro station. jackie? >> reporter: we now have an image of what it looked like on board that smoky train. that image was provided by a news4 viewer who was on the train and if you're looking at it, that has just got to be unbelievably scary, so dark inside there as the train is filling up with smoke. now a number of passengers we're told at least six, were treated mostly for shortness of breath and panic attack but one gentleman did report symptoms of a heart attack. decontamination area has been set up in case firefighters need it. just a short time ago news4 spoke to a passenger on the train, a man named bip carter as he sat on board a medical bus awaiting triage. >> everybody got as low as they possibly could to the ground
6:01 pm
because that's where the best possibility for oxygen was at. so that's what we did. the rest of the area was filled with a lot of smoke. it was just very smoky in there. we couldn't see anything. the visibility was very poor. >> how are you feeling? >> right now there's a lot of burning in my throat and into my chest a little bit. >> reporter: and what a way to end your monday. that had to be just a horrifying situation and especially because of how long unfortunately those folks had to be on the train before they were evacuated. latest from the scene here we're told the fire is out. i've seen some fire engines, different units leaving the scene here. no time line on when metro service will be back to normal. jackie bensen news4. >> jackie here's what it looked like inside a train that was near l'enphant plaza. a viewer posted this on
6:02 pm
instagram this evening along with a description, "a harrowing experience train stopped, lights went out, smoke started filling in never been so scared in my life." the passenger says they were stalk on that train for almost an hour and that others inside the car did need medical attention. our team coverage continues now with news4's derrick ward at 7th and e streets southwest where he saw some evac weighs from a metro tunnel earlier. what are you seeing now? >> reporter: well right now what we're seeing we've moved from that spot. the evacs were taking place down on the waterfront. take a look at this video. this is the scene down at 9th and main. when we got there, there was several fire trucks there, some fire and emt personnel were on one of those grates that lead to the tunnels in the station for emergency evacuations just for incidents like this. now, at some point they took a
6:03 pm
firefighter through one of those grates. she was brought up and put into an ambulance and taken away. we don't know anything act her condition. she looked to be okay in terms of any sort of trauma or anything but she was breathing with an oxygen mask. two other people walked out of that tunnel and were taken away by police. and what we've seen since then and since we've moved here especially closer to the scene, is a lot of confusion, a lot of traffic. we are starting to get people pouring off some of the shuttle buss that metro has set up. we talked to some riders who were pretty upset because they really didn't know what was going on. let's take a look. this is what we heard from one rider. >> we were on 7th street for almost what an hour or two? so it takes three hours when it usually takes me 20 minutes to get home. no communication. we got off the bus because they had the bus driving toll a place where you had to kind of make a u-turn so, another bus driver had to get on to make the u-turn for her. >> we were on that bus for an
6:04 pm
hour and 15 minutes. >> i was on the subway left the subway to get on the bus. >> reporter: and as you can hear there's still emergency response in this area. back with you live here. you're looking at i guess you would call it a triage area. they have been bringing some buss with what appear to be people who might have been coming out of these tunnels on them. tlafk is still blocked. a lot of people are concerned because they're seeing fbi vehicles from atf and other federal authorities here. that is usually the case in the nation's capital whenever there's an incident especially one they haven't resolved at this point. they are always responding. doesn't necessarily mean there's anything special or especially nefarious about it. they don't know exactly what it was at that point, and that's what this is all about, the investigation and finding out exactly what did happen. live in southwest, derrick ward news4. >> derrick, thank you. it has been a frustrating ride for thousands of passengers this evening that service on three lines has affected and
6:05 pm
people search for ways to get around this area always congested at this time of night. darcy spencer continues our coverage from the mt. vernon square metro sta shuttle buses are now running. darcy? >> reporter: that's right, tim. i interviewed a woman at 5:00 who said through all of this people are remaining calm but people are beginning to lose their patience. they're getting very frustrated. take a look at this. this is one of the shuttle buses, and you can look inside bus and see how packed it is. people are packed in there like sardines. we've only seen a few of these shuttle buses come through the area and they're waiting outside in the cold waiting outside in the rain for these buss to show up. and there are so many people not everybody can get on the bus. you see a lot more people are stand ong the sidewalk on the curb outside the metro station. they're going to have to wait until the next bus shows up to try to get a ride on further down the line. let's go to some video. another bus that showed up here
6:06 pm
just within the last half hour. again, there's stale lot of confusion and frustration. those people were told that that bus was going to take them to l'enphant plaza metro. they said why are we going there? there's ban fire at the metro statio t that's what they were told. they were going to l'enphant plaza metro. let's hear from some of these frustrated riders. what's your thought about this whole situation? >> man, i don't know. they don't seem to have much of a system here you know? i don't know what's going on. i guess they're doing the best they can do. >> crazy, man. l'enphant plaza is where the fire is. that's crazy. metro need to get it together for real. people are trying to get home. for real, man p, that's crazy. she don't even know where she going and she driving the pus to metro. >> reporter: so right there you heard a little bit of some of the frustration some of these riders are experiencing. you can see people are still standing out here a couple hours into this incident waiting for the buses. the good news is some shuttle

chris jansing at the white house with more on today's hack attack. chris? >> reporter: thanks very much jim. yeah youtube, twitter, social media infiltrated by a group claiming it was affiliated with isis and they put up these messages. one of them said "american soldiers we are coming -- watch your back." and it was signed by isis. now, obviously this is embarrassing although military officials say very pointedly there's obviously no classified information that's ever posted on youtube or twitter. however, they are notifying those senior military officials whose personnel information was hacked into and posted including phone numbers. centcom says it's been taking appropriate measures. they've notified hundreds of their managers making sure they know that all of their security protocols in place and in fact sending out some videos showing them how to do that. and the timing certainly couldn't have been worse because this hack happened just as the president was over at the federa talking about cybersecurity.
6:09 pm
and when we asked josh earnest, the white house spokesman, about it he said yes, obviously they take this very seriously, obviously it's a concern that personnel phone numbers of generals may have been disclosed, but he says it's also important not to confuse this with a major data breach that while they are going to continue to look into this they don't believe that there was any serious leak of important information. and tomorrow the president, by the way, is going to be going into arlington, virginia where the national cybersecurity center is. we will hear more from him there. this is all part of his lead-up to the state of the union, and he's going to be previewing some of the proposals that he's making to keep all of our information safe as well as corporate accounts and government accounts safe. back to you. >> thank you, chris. new steps being taken now to increase security in the u.s. following those terror attacks in paris. today the department of homeland security announced it's stepped
