derrick wa joins us live from l'enphant plaza metro with the latest. >> rep as you said indeed, we eo hear from the national transp very soon about details, at le a preliminary report into what happened o an incident in the extreme, but not completely rare. smoke in the tunnel happens every day. metro says it's almost a daily occurrence tra the rails resultin smoke. but with monday's incident where one woman died there is now a height and response like the one at the boston metro station this morning. a similar report at ft. totten and another reported at twinbrook earlier in the afternoon. injuries minor delays that was the extent of it. riders are taking it in stride. >> i feel pretty secure on the metro. maybe on the yellow line we get stopped the tunnel coming in

the son of former d.c. mayor marion bar says he'll stay in the race for a council seat despite an incident earlier this week that attracted police attention. a police report says marion christopr barry is suspected of threatening a bank teller and destroying secy camera at a downtown pnc bank branch on tuesday. he's not been charged. he posted on facebook today that his campaign won't be bogged down and deterred by quote, frivolous events. he's been arrested at least six times in the past four years and is currently on probation. a baby born on the beltway before the morning rush hour. this happened on the elder loop near thek rd exit. the woman was head to inova fairfax hospital when she called 911 and said she was going into labor. paramedics responded and got the n to an ambulance but before they could get to a hospital, e baby came on the side of the highway, a lit bail by girl.

i'm jackie bensen at the news4 live desk. we have the latest information leased by the ntsb a few minutes ago about monday's metro crash. it few paragraphs long. the two headlines in this information t we did not know before. e first is that the ntsb confirms there two trains two trains in that tunnel beneath l'enphant plaza when this happened one stopped in the tunl south of the station at 3:15 p.m. and then a second

train, a following train that stopped at 3:25 100 feet short of the platform. both were six-car trains and people in both of those trains in all of those cars were affected by heavy smoke. the second headline deals with the third rail and how it may have contributed to a they in rescuing people from those trains. i am reading right now from the ntsb report. it says ntsb investigators have inspected the area of the incident where they observed severe e damage to the third rail and electrical cables about 1,100 feet ahead of the first train that stopped at 3:16. we have a picture included in this report to show you what that looks like. this is significant. recorded data shows about 3:16 p.m., t ten minutes even before that first train stopped, about 3:06:00 p.m. an

electric breaker one end of the section of the third rail tripped, opened. that means that that section of the third rail was not working. however, at about 3:16 p.m. metro operations control began ac ventila fans in an efft to remove smoke from the area and the electrical breaker at the other en the third ra remained closed meaning it continued to supply power to the third rail until about 3:50 p.m. so you can see the time there. the first train stopped 3:15 second train stopped at 3:25. and there is power, according to this report t third rail until 3:50 p.m. which contribud very likely to why these passengers br were being told to stay on the train and in it appear firefights being able to get down directly and re. bp dumped millions of barrels of oil into the gulf of

breaking right now at 4:30, the ntsb has released its preliminar into monday's deadly incident at the l'enphant a metro station. we've now learned two trains not one, but two trains were exposed to the heavy smoke. the report did not reveal a cause for the smoke but investigs did find severe electric arcing damage to the third rail.

what you're seeing is some of the severe damage from arcing done to the third rail and some cables. this happened about 1,100 feet ahead of train 302. now, the ntsb has also released a chronology of how things happen after that. now, they say at 3:06 a circuit breaker at one end of the sectio third rail tripped. it opened up. usually that happens when there a fluctuation in courage or voltage in the line. it a safety measure, so that wod cut a power to the section of a track. ten minutes later at 3:16 we are told that metro operations center turned on ventilation fans remotely in the tunnel because smo w building up. but at 3 chn 50 a breaker at the
