on this sunday night, out of control. the danger of freezing weather that caused hundreds of accidents and pileups from coast to coast bringing deaths and dozens of injuries. shots fired from a speeding car near joe biden's did delaware home. what we know about the investigation and the secret service response. man of the people the record outpouring for pope francis as millions come to hear and see him deliver a strong message for children and environment. a class act. he's a driving defensive force. his work off the field puts him in a league of his own.

good evening. one highway official called it the worst type of winter precipitation. the freezing rain made for horrific and deadly driving accidents on both sides of the country this weekend. there have been literally hundreds of crashes in the northeast today including a pair of pileups involving dozens of cars in eastern pennsylvania that left at least three people dead. it happened this morning after light rains hitting cold roadway surfaces produced invisible layers of ice. it was the same story in oregon yesterday where a chain reaction crash left a dozen people hurt and at least one man with a heroing tale of survival and image many won't soon forget. kristin reports. >> this car out of control down an icy street in new york.

seconds later, a pedestrian goes down the sidewalk more like a skating rink. hundreds of accidents clogged highways. near philadelphia more than 50 cars were involved in a chain reaction crash that left one hit the car. another car behind me hits me. i'm spinning around four or five times. >> our nbc affiliate was at the scene. >> it took hours before one lane was opened. so many vehicles were involved rescuers brought in a bus to take three dozen injured to local hospitals. >> icy roads were blamed for two fatalityies in pennsylvania and one in connecticut. >> this happened quickly. we went from upper 20s and 30s and rain falling on that immediately changed over to ice on roadways. >> transit authorities shut down buses and services in the state of pennsylvania and marijuana

new jersey 420 accidents were reported at noon. at the bus terminal that left many waiting. >> an hour and ten minutes ago. they said an hour. i asked 15 minutes ago, and they said an hour again. >> take a look at these lines. they keep going and going. they're waiting to get on a bus. good news they just found out buses are up and running. it hasn't been just the east seeing problem this is weekend. take a look at these pictures from oregon saturday. that's a chevy silverado flattened between the semis with caleb inside. incredibly the 27-year-old walked away with two band aids after the pileup involving more than 100 people. >> i was protected. somebody was watching out for me. i closed my eyes and held onto the wheel. it happen to be everybody in the pickup truck was smashed to the bare rim. >> an icy mess from coast to

coast, leaving many happy to be home safely tonight. nbc news new york. they weren't home at the time when shots rang out last night from aing speeding car near the delaware home of vice president joe biden and his wife. >> reporter: local police and secret service were stationed outside biden's home today searching for bullets and clues after shots were fired in the area last night from a public road outside the security perimeter surrounding the home. the property is set back hundreds of yards from the home and hidden from public view. the vice president and wife dr. jill biden were out for the evening. >> the biggest concern is the people got away. they were close to a from texted residence residence. >> secret service said this started at 8:30 p.m. when a vehicle drove by the vice president's residence at a high rate of speed and fired multiple

gunshots. officials stationed at his home heard the shots. one agent saw the car speed off. authorities started to investigate. half an hour later at 9:00 p.m. a man drove by them. police took him into custody after he resisted arrest. that man was questioned but wasn't charged in relation to the shooting. authorities emphasize there's no indication at this point the two incidents are related. now law enforcement analysts say they needs to track down who is responsible as quick as possible. >> they need to check the last retail they passed and see who was in the car, what's it about? >> reporter: the secret service fbi and local police investigate. the president and vice president have been briefed. meanwhile meanwhile, shots were fired in a second location half a mile away from the vice president's home. no indication those are related. secret service are stationed at

the vice president's delaware home around the clock even when he's here in d.c. lester? >> kristin, thanks. the man hunt is over for teenage fugitives from kentucky we reported on last night. 18-year-old dalton hays and 13-year-old chie yan fill lips were found a sleep in florida early today in a stolen pickup truck. they were suspected of stealing three cars two with guns inside during a two week crime spree. they were taken in without incident. europe remains on high alert after new muslim protests against the french satirical newspaper is targeted by violence. authorities in germany are urged to cancel a rally to counter the spread of islam. we have more from paris. >> antiislamist demonstration that islamist threatened to attack. a weekly rally that drew 25,000

has been banned tomorrow. german police said there was a concrete threat against it islamic radicals branding the protest and planning to kill one of its leaders. outside europe muslim anger has erupted with more protests in pakistan against the latest "charlie hebdo" magazine. in the former french colony of niger people have died. they're furious the magazine shows a cartoon of the prophet muhammad. in an interview with chuck todd on "meet the press." >> we don't kill anyone he says. we depend freedom. our cartoons defend freedom of conscious. >> in britain, jewish leaders pay tribute to the paris magazine and its dead today. they are anxious the government is planning action. >> without dues britain would not be britain. just as without muslims, britain would not be britain.

of the union address before congress solidly is controlled by republicans. the white house released this picture of the president in casual mode preparing for the speech in which he'll propose tax hikes for wealthiest americans potentially putting congress in the position to appearing to defend the highest income earners of the middle class. chief washington correspondent john hardwood joining us with more on the president's strategy. will the republican congress go along with any of this? >> not likely lester. that doesn't mean they are not important. these proposals from congress mark a turning point in politics. we've recovered from recession and financial crisis. we haven't listed the incomes of average middle class families stagnant for 40 years. the president wants more spending on education, training and infrastructure and wants to use the tax code to take income from wealthy americans and put it in pockets of middle class. other democrats want to push

passed them by. mark potter spoke with some of them today in havana. >> at a run down cell phone repair shop in central havana young cuban technicians use old equipment and do the best they can to keep customers connected. >> translator: we have nothing. we have no parts. >> these cuban youth are eager to join the modern world but are hampered by lack of technology and by limited access to internet and other communications. in a visit today with three young cuban proprofessione professionals in their 20s, we learned they're happy to hear about obama in the decision with cuba. >> this could mean so much for me my job, my life. >> they hope these changes will ease some of the difficulties of living here. >> i can never have my own house or own car or dream for my kids.

. the scene today in alabama. those among the film "selma" were there to celebrate the marching to celebrate martin luther king. the protests including bloody sunday led to the passage of the voting rights late their year. a big weekend many sports. skier lindsay von is back on the top of her game. she powered through fog and snow to tie the record that has stooded 35 years. for von it was the culmination of two year comeback from injuries that forced her to miss last winter's olympics in sochi russia russia. we know one of the two teams going to the super bowl. green bay packers led to the final minutes. late in the fourth quarter, seattle seahawks scored two touchdowns to go away to be followed by a long field goal by agree bay to tie it up. in overtime seattle scored another touchdown to win the nfc championship 28-22.
