vandalism? we'll tell you what the congressdation did coming up on news4. pope francis planning a whirlwind trip to the u.s. details on his stop in d.c. good evening, i'm chris claurns. we saw plenty of -- lawrence. we saw plenty of rain today. and you can expect slick roads if you're working on the holiday. we have more on the martin luther king forecast. >> chris, i'm already get something reports of some icy conditions. one of my twitter followers saying their driveway in ellicott city covered in ice. this could be concern for black ice overnight and tomorrow morning, especially if you had rain today. those of you in parts of montgomery county especially east, prince george's county anne arundel howard counties the greatest chance of ice is in these areas as temperatures drop to below freezing if they're not already there. gaithersburg manassas at 30, as

well. washington coming at the 4. the suburbs all dropped to below freezing tonight. gaithersburg, a low of 26. frederick, a low of 30. areas inside of the beltway remain above freezing. a low temperature in washington of 35. now we're dry tomorrow chris. so after that threat of black ice is over not a bad day. but some rain and snow is in the forecast on wednesday. i'll have the latest on that coming up in about 15 minutes. [ chanting ] a grand jury failed to indict police officers involved in the death of an unarmed black man. it didn't take long for protesters like these downtown to coalesce around a message -- black lives matter. >> wake up america. our nation's peace officers are the good guys. >> the folks chanting "the black lives matter" sparked counter-rallies like this on

saturday. a lot of the people demonstration say police officers are in danger and they want everyone to know that blue lives matter as well. new tonight a controversy is brewing over all lives matter. vandals spray painted the word on church property in montgomery county. and this particular church is no stranger to racial trouble. news4's derek ward joins us live from silver spring to explain why. what's going on? >> reporter: well take two phrases. all lives matter, black lives matter. neither of those negates the other. now superimpose one over the other on a single sign and do it with a can of spray paint, then it's a whole other issue. it's an issue they're dealing with at the christ congressional church in silver spring. it's not the worst thing that could have been written on this sign. this church actually had a cross burned on its front lawn in the '60s when it integrated so that puts it in e pastor here believes that the changes made were about more than semantics. >> the message we were trying to give to the community had been

deluded. >> reporter: instead of removing the scrawl word or discarding the sign altogether reverend dr. matthew broderick displayed the sign inside to make it part of the sunday message. >> these are small aggressions, and they build up over time. i think that they're deliberate and they're intentionally hurtful. and our community is a place that welcomes and includes all people. we don't want that to be the kind of message that we give. >> reporter: needless to say, there was discussion. indeed it was encouraged. he said there was a level of pain felt among the congregants when they saw the vandalism coming in the crucible of police killings in ferguson and other cities. >> we have brothers and sisters in the african-american community saying there's a problem in america now. and they're calling on us to be part of the solution. >> reporter: the solution was to enlist the sign vandalism and all. >> decided to put it back on coltsville road and add more

black lives matter signs so the community knows about our support. >> reporter: the message to whomever did this -- >> we love you, and we're sorry if we offended you. we're also sticking to our message. >> reporter: now if you walk around to the side of the church you will see another sign pointed on a post. it says "may peace prevail on the earth." i think that's one that everyone can agree with. live in silver spring, derek ward, news4. >> thanks. there is new hope tonight for five pit bulls after the dogs were discovered chained up, abandoned with no food or water and starving in the freezing weather. anne arundel county police were serving a search percent when they found the dog. a sixth dog had already died frozen to the ground. the pit bulls named hurricane, blizzard whirlwind, tsunami, and tornado. right now they're not up for adoption but the department hopes to find them new homes once they get better. we're also learning new

details about a deadly shooting in prince george's county. police now tell us the man they found dead at the motel is james birch from maryland. his body was discovered early this morning. investigators do not think this was a random shooting. police have reopened rockville pike on the southbound side after a serious accident involving a machine in a wheelchair. this happened this afternoon at halpine road near the twinbrook metro want the victim was rushed to the hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. the area is known for bad accidents. two months ago, a rockville man was killed when a car hit him while he was crossing the street:all the power's been restored to tyson's corner mall. tell reopen tomorrow. parts of the mall didn't have power for about 90 minutes this afternoon. dominion virginia power says there was a problem with some cables leading to transformers. the mall itself never closed but some of the stores did. and a lot of the traffic signals around the parking lot weren't working either. part of an office building exploded on k street.

that sent people scrambling in downtown d.c. even on a sunday a lot of the offices at the davis building were occupied. inspectors think the explosion happened in the boiler room and two building engineers were injured. >> saw two men who were apparently the engineers who were on the floor. apparently they had been blown to, you know the ground as a result of the explosion. and we asked them what had happened. and they told us that there was an explosion in the penthouse where the boiler room was. >> the two men were taken to the hospital for treatment. metro is issuing a public apology in the wake of an underground emergency at l'enfant plaza. the transit agency took out an ad in the "washington post." and the apology is actually in the form of a letter from metro's chairman of the board, tom dounce. he said metro is working to make sure it never happens again. one person died monday. 80 others said to be taken to the hospital after an electrical problem filled a tunnel and

train with heavy smoke. in a direct message to riders he write, "the your safety and trust in metro to deliver safe and reliable service is paramount to us." the national transportation safety board did a preliminary investigation and found it took 45 minutes before power was cut to the third rail. tonight a pro-golfer is describing how he survived being kidnapped, beaten and robbed in hawaii. robert allenby told nbc's "golf talk central" he's thankful to be alive. he said he was attacked outside a bar friday and says he doesn't know if he was drugged but can't remember anything about what happened. witnesses who found allenby said he was thrown from a vehicle miles away from where he disappeared. tonight a kentucky sheriff says the teenagers who staged a multistate crime spree are scared and just want to go home. police in florida arrested 18-year-old dalton hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend. the couple are accused of stealing trucks and checks. authorities plan to extradite them to kentucky to face several

felony charges. this ramped up security tonight at vice president joe biden's home in delaware after someone fired shots in the area and then drove away. so far investigators have found no damage to the bidens' home in greenville. the family was in delaware at the time but were not in the home. tuesday president obama will deliver his state of the union address. and it's already getting criticized by republicans on capitol hill. the gop now controls both chambers of congress. as nbc's brian mooar reports, that's not stopping the president from offering up a wish list that includes another tax hike for the rich. >> reporter: president obama spent the weekend tweaking a state of the union address that will be his first to a capitol controlled by republicans. >> i'll kuehl this new congress to join -- i'll call on this new congress to join me in finding areas where we can agree and deliver for the american peoplement. >> reporter: what the president says is certain to have a familiar ring. he's already unveiled several

hundreds of people came out to honor a fallen paramedics and firefighter. he died in the line of duty in maryland. yellerer this month he was at the -- earlier this month he was at the scene of a car crash where a truck slid on the icy roadway and hit him. the paid paramedic was with the bel air fire academy. he was also a captain with the west friendship department in howard county. today nearly 900 of his colleagues stood in salute and paid their respects. a lot of them came from as far away as new york city and canada. they all say eric had a passion for helping people and wanted to teach others to do the same. >> he loved what he did and took time to help others to learn this trade, his beloved trade. a trade of helping others. >> stesiak became a volunteer firefighter when he was just 14 years old. he literally grew up doing exactly what he loved. we're learning some new details about pope francis' upcoming visit to the united states. news4's tom sherwood reported the initial plans. and now a member of the pope's

organizing committee is revealing more about the proposed schedule. the archbishop told the catholic news agency pope francis is expected to arrive in washington the night of september 22nd. he's expected to visit the white house the following day and then celebrate mass at washington's basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. pope francis may make a speech before a joint meeting of congress. then he'll leave on the 24th to address the united nations in new york. his last stop is philadelphia for the world meeting of families. tonight home repairs are on -- are in the works for one family in bowie. the person who plowed through their house in the middle of the night, they're still on the loose. news4's darcy spencer reports on a bizarre crash all captured on home surveillance video. so they came in through this corner. >> reporter: katie moran shows the damage left when this happened -- a car smashed into their bowie home in the middle

of the night. it was captured on their home surveillance camera. >> i was actually at the hospital. my sister had given birth to twins. and my husband called and said "a car just ran into the house. you have to come home right now." >> reporter: sean moran of hope with the kids and their dog, pablo. >> about 1:20 in the morning, i heard the crash, the crunch of the garage door. >> reporter: when they check the surveillance system, they saw it was a car, possibly a nissan. the driver apparently lost control, hit the house, and kept going. the passenger was nearly run over when he got out. >> i can't imagine anyone driving that fast at the 1:30 in the morning is up to much good. >> never in a million years did i think that somebody would run a car into our house. >> reporter: the damage of done to the garage and laundry area. it's all boarded up now. the family is still in the process of getting all of this damage repaired. in the meantime they have turned over that video to bowie

police. they're hoping someone will recognize the car and call police. >> i don't know if anyone might hear of stories or friends through friends or -- i don't know. maybe a parent will have a whole unique story come home from their son with a damaged car that they'll want him to pay up for. >> reporter: in prince george's county, darcy spencer, news4. >> wow. lucky no one was hurt. the cast and crew of "selma" honored dr. martin luther king jr. today with a march in selma alabama. producer oprah winfrey was there, as was actor david oyello who portrayed king in the movie. they marched from city hall to the edmond pettis bridge where 50 years ago the officers beat the student protesters and teargassed them. >> those that have gone before us say no more -- >> no more! >> no more -- >> no more! >> a lot of d.c. public school students are watching "selma" for free thanks to private donations. the march on washington film festival raised more than

$70,000. so 8th through 12th graders could see the movie. students could show their i.d. or report card at participating theaters. and again they don't have class tomorrow. but since martin luther king jr. day is a federal holiday, metro will be running on a limited schedule. so the good news is a lot of folks will be off work tomorrow because the ones that do have to go in roads might be tricky. >> there could be black ice during the early morning hours, especially for those of you in areas of prince george's anne arundel, howard and eastern montgomery counties. inside of the beltway, temperatures really should remain above freezing tonight. areas off to the east have the biggest concern for slick spots tomorrow morning. remember bridges, overpasses, the first things to freeze as well as untreated sidewalks and driveways. so something to be aware of tomorrow mortgage. -- tomorrow morning. martin luther king jr. not bad. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. that's going to be the best part of the day. it will be chilly and breezy. so with the breeze especially around the midday and afternoon hours, temperatures will feel like they're in the upper 30s.

we'll actually hit a high temperature of 44. then we're going to be talking about a storm system on wednesday bringing rain and maybe even some snow to the area. now here's the latest satellite and radar image. we did have a few showers this evening. all of that activity really fizzling out. we're looking at the partly cloudy skies overnight tonight. and a chilly start tomorrow morning. 35 degrees inside of the beltway. upper 20s for those of you in the suburbs. by noon hit a temperature of 43. with the breeze temperatures feel like they're in the 30s throughout the day. 5:00 p.m. temperature around 42. definitely want to have the sunglasses and warmer jacket handy for tomorrow. as students head become to school on tuesday, the weather is cooperating. chilly at the bus stop but overall a nice winter day. partly sunny skies. high temperatures in the upper 40s on tuesday. here's our wednesday system. it arrives from the north and west. this "l" here, an area of low pressure. that's the storm system that's going to bring rain and snow the area. but exactly where more rain and

more snow is going to fall still remains to be seen. snow though, is looking most likely around washington and areas to the north and west. right now a dusting to up to two inches of accumulation is possible. we do need to keep an eye on timing. looks like the system could arrive during that morning commute and start to wind down at the beginning of the evening commute. some delays are certainly possible wednesday. you can see the high temperature, 41 degrees, really doesn't support a lot of snow falling and actually sticking. something we're going to keep a close eye on. tom's in tomorrow at 4:26. he's definitely going to have updates. thursday and friday, plenty of clouds low 40s. dry. next weekend, chris, partly sunny skies, and high temperatures in the low to mid 40s. >> all right. looking good for mid-january. thank you very much. ahead, a little over a month until spring training and the nationals may be close to making a huge free agent splash. this... is the best part of the day. when we sit down together and talk. more and more,
