4:30. it is martin luther king jr. today. there are community service events in alexandria fairfax as well as in montgomery and prince george's county today. at 8:00 a.m. mayor bowser will help lay a wreath at the mlk memorial. also you can go to the ablet the annual peace walk and parade. it starts near the anacostia metro station at 11:30 a.m.. because of the holiday, metro is not running rush hour service today. trains start running in about half an hour at 5:00 a.m.. however, you can expect a 12 minute wait between trains on any line. so morning we are waking up to a couple sprinkles. and you saw some flakes. >> like three. literally like five second and it was done. let's check in with tom kierein for your weather headlines. a few sprinkles and a few sweat snow flaiks zipping through in the last hour, but now they're heading over toward the eastern shore.

however the pavement is a little bit below freezing. here are the current pavement temperatures. most of the pavement temperatures in virginia including 66 and 95 are a little above freezing. they did not gets a much rain there yesterday. so most of that pavement is dry there. however, right around the beltway, it's right near freezing and 95 down to around 31 degrees. so is interstate 70. the icc between 270 and 95 read temperatures only 29. and the road temperatures at 31 from interstate 270 up through frederick and then between frederick and hagerstown is right near freezing, as well. so the moisture that came on through, freezing up on area roads, even though the air temperatures are generally above freezing in the 30s right now and it's going to stay very cold here for another hour or two. and then after we see this moisture pulling away we'll begin to dry out and things will begin to warm up a bit. a look at the hour by hour warming for the day ahead that's coming up next weather and

confirmed reports that max scherzer will pitch for the nationals this year. he comes over from the detroit tigers who had been to the playoffs in each of the last four years. he was the best pitcher in the league two years ago. his contract will keep him in washington until 2021. police are hunting a motel murderer this morning. james birch was found shot to death early sunday morning at the brad motel in croom. investigators do not think this was a random shoogt, butting but no word on a suspect. police are offering up to $25,000 for information lead to go an arrest. this morning a montgomery county pastor has a message for vandals wrote on a sign at a church property. someone painted over a sign and changed it to all lives matter. this happened in silver spring. dr. braddock brought the sign

inside and displayed it prominently during sunday's services. >> the pain was around realizing that we have brothers and sisters in the african-american community saying there is a problem in america right now and we're calling all of us to be part of the solution. >> he says he loves the vandals who did this and says he's sorry if the church offended them. he also said the church is sticking to the message that black lives matter. more signs will go out into the community. it is the second serious accident involving a pedestrian on rockville pike in just two months. a man in a wheelchair was hit near the twinbrook metro station sunday afternoon. he was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, although he should survive. this area is known for bad accidents. just two months ago, a rockville man was killed when a car hit him while he was crossing the street. an explosion at a building on k-street happened sunday around 3:00 p.m..

sending people scrambling out of that building on the street. now according to a witness in some areas of the building, the explosion was powerful enough to knock several people off their feet. >> we saw two men who were apparently the engineers who were on the floor. >> they are still looking into the cause of that explosion. good morning. i'm richard jordan at the live desk. new this morning, the u.s. apparently had infiltrated north korea's computer system before the sony hacking scandal. the u.s. government officials sing any further details. even though the u.s. was monitoring north korean computers, federal officials did not know of the sony hack until an fbi report. james comey saying north koreans have become sloppy at hiding their tracks. and general clapper who went to

not been playing fair in last night's game. new report that the new england patriots may have deflated game balls before the game yesterday. this is coming from the nbc station in indianapolis wthr saying the patriots let the air out of balls on sunday night.nfl requires that game balls be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds of air. each team has to provide at least 12 game balls. the report doesn't say exactly how much air was in those balls in question now but if there is proof of intent, patriots could lose some draft picks. patriots beat the colts 45-7. p. right now watch out for icy conditions on the roadways. take a look at this deadly pileup. a crash right outside of philadelphia. one man did die. 30 people were hurt in a 66 car pileup on interstate 76. we brought you the story yesterday morning. since then at least five people died from the treacherous driving conditions in the

northeast over the weekend. dozens of spinouts and accidents were reported from new jersey to new hampshire. >> we hear meteorologists and the highway people saying under certain conditions stay off the roads, don't drive unless you absolutely have to. >> and i was here when it started to pick up in our area north of us in baltimore. that's when things really took off, they started closing down bridges, a lot of y today. >> yes, a few wet snowflakes, but now it's gone. we have on the storm team 4 radar, you can see these quickly moving flurries and sprinkles that came down and then on dry pavement moistened it up again. most air temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s however lorton manassas ft. meade down to 32. also it's a frosty, many wind shields and car windows are

behind it. fortunately, no one was hurt. it happened in the evening. it was around 8:30 when someone according to the secret service sped by in a car and fired multiple rounds at the delaware home of vice president joe biden. this didn't happen in d.c., it happened in delaware where he was spending the holiday weekend. shortly after that they did detain someone who came by and resisted arrest, but no word those incidents are connected. this there were also separate shots fired at a nearby reservoir. so the secret service is trying to figure out if there are any connections there. you might remember last week a delaware national guard base increased their security after five people in two days came by asking for directions they thought that there was something unusual about that. so as we're used to security concerns here in washington, now delaware, as well, as the secret service tries to figure out why

cables leading to transformers. the mall itself never closed but some of the stores there did. this morning a kentucky sheriff says the teens who were on the multistay free are scared and just want to go home. dalton hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend were arrested. they plan to extradite them to kentucky to face several felony charges. pope francis left the philippines after a five day visit drew millions to see him. a record 6 million people celebrated his final mass. the vatican says that is the largest crowd ever for a pay pal visit. and this morning we're learning new details about pope francis' upcoming visit to the united states. the archbishop told the catholic news agency that the pope is expected to arrive in washington the night of september 22nd. he's expected to visit the white house the following day and then celebrate mass at washington's

basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. pope francis may also make a speech before a joint meeting of congress and then he'll leave our area on the 24th toed a the united nations in new york and his last stop will be in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. 11 before the hour. this morning some of you will be picking up a bus in fairfax or fredericksburg to go to a huge gun lobby in richmond. or getting on a bus i should say. as many as 1,000 people will be at the virginia xwn assembly to lobby for gun rights starting at 8:30 this morning. this happens every year. some buses are leaving at 6:00 and 7:00 this morning, but oergs say you had to reserve a ticket. we don't know if any seats are left right now. also happening today, gun regulation advocates will rally at the white house. the group says they want new legislation requiring universal background checks gun safety training and money for research on gun violence. they're also calling for an assaults weapons ban and a ban on high capacity ammunition

magazines. oprah winfrey joined the cast and crew of "selma" to commemorate the anniversary of the protest march. they marched in montgomery alabama where the march began 50 years ago. >> so i'm so excited that once again i get to march across the bridge not as portraying annie lee cooper, but as standing in the you shoes and on the shoulders of everyone who came before us. >> the march coincided with the events hop are orring the late civil rights leader dr. martin luther king. you can join in a national day of service for mlk day. just head to the jewish community center in fairfax or the lutheran church in mclean. this is the sixth year volunteer fairfax is inviting to you give back to your community in honor of dr. king. well, there is a new trend

can they expect weather-wise? >> and a lot of events going on for dr. king today. parade in southeast, should be good weather for that. but we're starting off pretty cold this morning. we have had a few flurries and sprinkles quickly racing through across our region coming in from the northeast heading southeast. that storm team 4 radar, right now they're on the eastern shore, but quickly pulling away. there are a few breaks in the clouds. and temperatures are in most locations a little bit above freezing but there are a few scattered places where it's at or a little below freezing and some road temperatures are at or a little below freezing as well. so we do have patchy frost around. i took this picture of a car in northwest washington covered in frost. that was just a couple hours ago. you may be scraping kros off your windshield. 8:00 9:00 this morning near freezing. by noon jumping into the mid-40s in the metro area. it will be near 40 farther weather. by midafternoon in the mid-40s to

even upper 40s across parts of virginia. culpepper down to fredericksburg near 50 degrees metro area mid-40s highs low to mid-40s during the afternoon throughout much of the region. so great weather for the events today, but it will be rather chilly. so dress accordingly. you'll need at least a light jacket for much of the events going on today. you'll need sunglasses as well, as we'll have the sunshine coming and going as we get into the afternoon. keep up with it all with the storm team 4 weather app. then tomorrow, we get back to work and school cold in the morning, but afternoon highs, upper 40s and partly sunny. on wednesday, we might get a little bit of rain in the morning and then perhaps a little wet snow coming in during the afternoon. enough maybe to put down a dusting on just grassy areas on wednesday afternoon. then sun back on thursday highs 40s. we keep the january thaw pattern going. highs 40s and dry.

i got my car washed this weekend. a little too early if we will be getting that wednesday. but i had to get the salt off. still have a crash 95 north at dale city that is off to the shoulder though. so shouldn too much there for you this morning. otherwise 95 actually looking quite good. same thing as you're looking at 66 here this morning. a lot of the road work we typically see is not happening on the main roads this morning. this one is though branch avenue northbound one report says two lanes block, another says all lanes are blocked. so they will direct you around that. beltway at branch avenue overall there looking pretty good here this morning p. and beltway at colesville road rolling right along, as well. also a look here at 270 into and out of up to no major problems. you're at speed. a live look the 66 coming up. 4:55 right now. and not all airports are pet friendly. but coming up, we'll show you where you'll be able to fly out
