there. >> want to get right to tom kierein for the first check on that forecast. >> good morning. yeah most of the air temperatures are above freezing but it's the road temperatures themselves that are at or a little below freezing. so we do have patchy ice. we did get a few sprinkles racing through over the last couple hours. but much of the pavement around the region looks like this. this is taken right in front of our building here at nbc 4 where it's still a little damp. so watch out for patchy ice over the next couple of hours. even though your thermometer may say 34 35 degrees, it's that pavement temperature that will be critical. if it looks wet, that could be ice. so watch out for that for another couple of hours. then to be followed by a chill in the air this afternoon. but certainly above average temperatures. and next chance of a wintry mix looks to be on wednesday. we'll be keeping an eye on that. as we take a look at temperatures around the metro area it's in the low to mid-30s in montgomery county prince george's county bowie down to

gardner, still have this crash. travel times coming up. so right now d.c. police are searching for the parents of a toddler pound wandering the streets alone in southeast. police found the little boy just before 1:00 this morning along morris road. the child was not wearing shoes. right now the toddler is with child protective services. the live desk is staying on top of bringing neweaking news. a massive fire burning in anne arundel county. let's take you to the live pictures. chopper 4 over the blaze right now on childs point road at eaton landings drive. you can see the flames flaring up. firefighters have been at this for just about an hour now or actually over an hour. it seems that the first call came in just before 4:00 this morning in. so going on two hours now firefighters have been battling this and takes toughit is a tough

one. you can see the flames still shooting up in to the sky. the thick gray smoke, this is a large house. it doesn't appear like there will be much left standing when this is all said and done. but there are no injuries reported so far. we'l of it. 6:03. and in the day ahead, family and friends will remember the woman killed duringunderground emergency. a memorial service for carol glover is set for later this morning. it will happen at 10:00 at capitol hill baptist church in northeast d.c.. the d.c. medical examiner says glover died of acute failure called by smoke exposure. friends and strangers have stepped into help the glover taem family during this time. congress will hold a briefing with the national transportation safety board on wednesday. eleanor holmes norton called for that briefing p. the ntsb's preliminary report found 45 minutes passed before power was cut to the third rail so first responders could reach passengers. d.c. fire and ems also released

an initial report and found firefighters were having a toume communicating with one another. you can read both reports on nbc waugshington washington.com. a montgomery county pastor says more signs will go out in to the community after vandals spray painted a sign on church property. somebody painted over the sign that reads black lives matter they changed to all lives matter. now, this happened at the united church of christ on colesville road in silver springs. the reverend brought the sign inside and displayed it prominently during sunday services. he says the church is sticking to the message that black lives matter. there are lots of events to honor dr. martin luther king jr. today. >> megan mcgrath is live at the mlk memorial. what is going on there? >> reporter: well, good morning. still pretty early so rather quiet here at the martin luther king memorial. but in just a couple hours

people will be gathering here for a special event. many schools and offices are closed today and there are a number of events taking place all around the region to honor the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king. at 8:00 this morning, mayor near muriel bowser will be on hand for a wreath laying ceremony. and the general public can attend. also later on today, the peace walk and parade will be happening along mlk avenue in southeast. p that's something that has happened for it a number of years. p it gets under way at 11:30. this video taken from last year's peace walk and parade. if you're in that area there will be some road closures as the parade goes through. and there will also be this afternoon at the national cathedral a special event. music, poetry and dance also open to the public. it gets under way at 2:00. and lasts about two hours until

new this morning, there is apparently some question about the game balls used in the afc championship championship. according to our affiliate in indianapolis the nfl is looking into whether the patriots deflated game balls during their vehicle toefr theictory over the colts last night. one ball was taken out of action to be weighed. if there is proof of sweptintent patriots could lose draft picks. but no matter how the league reacts patriots will be playing in the super bowl. seahawks will be the other team first defending champion to make the super bowl in the last ten years. the game is if februaryfebruary 1

sliding in yopgnkers new york. rain across the region flash freezing on roads looefing an ss leaving an icy glaze. it led to crashes that claimed at least five lives. so a reminder to drive carefully. and chuck bell is driving in the 4 x 4 along route 50. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: so far so good. we're 50 east bound just coming through cheverly maryland. pavement temperature here on route 50 right now is 34 degrees and pavement temperatures really in this part of maryland and all of northern virginia just above freezing. road temperatures across northern maryland at or just below the freezing mark. so if you're on the inter-county connector or 270 northbound out of the gaithersburg area some of those road temperatures are still below freezing. so there could be some potential

home 16,000 square feet. it will take time before they are able to get it out completely. extensive damage. looks like the home may have been destroyed by the flames. but again, we're now just learning that firefighters can't say for certain whether or not there is anyone inside that burning home. also new this morning, a civil rights watch dog group how coming out against the redskins name. they say the name is disrespectful and undignified. wills the league. the group was created about ten years ago to promote diversity in the nfl. its chairman played for washington in the 1960s. two people are suffering from severe injuries after an explosion at a building on k-street. this was the davis building. it sent people scrambling into the street. the explosion was so powerful in some areas of the building that it knocked several people off their feet. the cause of the explosion still under investigation. pope francis left the

philippines this morning after a five day visit drew millions ever faithful to hear and see him. a record 6 million people celebrated his final mass. the vatican says that is the largest crowd ever for a papal visit. and this morning we're learning some new details about pope francis' upcoming visit to the united states. the pope is expected to arrive in washington the night of september 22. he's expected to visit the white house the following day, then celebrate mass at washington's basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. he may also make a speech before a joint meeting of congress. and then he'll leave our area on the 24th to address the united nations in new york. his last stop is in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. 6:19 right now. many people are honoring the legacy of martin luther king jr. today by getting out and trying to help in their communities. on this national day of service,

one agent saw a car speeding away. soon after that police report more shots were fired in that area. >> we'll be questioning people trying to bring it all together, maybe checking some cameras in the last retail place they passed and see if they can find who was shooting, what it is about. >> about 30 minutes after the shooting, a man trovedrove by the house, investigators detained him after he resisted arrest. he's not charged though in the shoulding. ing shooting. a bus is on the way to an event in support of gun rights. and another one is leaving about a half hour from now. as many as 1,000 people are expected at the event at the virginia general assembly today. and also happening today, gun regulation reform advocates hold their own rally at noon at the white house. they want new laws requiring background checks gun safety training and money for research

welcome back. a look at temperatures this morning, they are hovering just above freezing in some spots. but you those temperatures will be headed upwards today. tom will have a check on the forecast at 6:51. 2450es which i willthese chilly temperatures are raising concerns about possibility of icing on the roads. >> chuck bell is driving around in northwest d.c. near rock creek park. what's going on? >> reporter: we're looking for ice on the roads and thankfully we have not found any. we just went through the middle of rock creek park because sometimes those sheltered cold valleys can support a little more dampness and lower temperatures. temperatures were three degrees colder in rock creek park than they were on the roads leading

into and out of it. we're thousand back up to 40 degrees here in northwest washington. so far the pavement remains dry. some of the pavement temperatures up across northern maryland and the icc are just at or below the freezing mark. most of the main roads have been treated with some chemicals, so as a result we have not spotted any ice this morning. that is very good news on a light holiday monday. that's the latest from the roads. thousand backk thousand now back into the stud use. a multimillion-dollar mansion is burning gowndown. more than 80 firefighters are still trying to get the upper happened. thick heavy smoke. it's not clear if there was anyone in the home when the fire started or if anyone was able to
