here's what's happening right now. firefighters are searching through what is left of this mansion for anyone who may have been inside when it went up in flames this morning. ♪ ♪ my country 'tis of thee ♪ people across america celebrating the life of martin luther king today. and the nationals add a big arm to their pitching staff. good morning, everyone. welcome to nbc 4 news "midday." i'm barbara harrison. trying to figure what sparked the flames at a

multimillion dar home. the flames started around 3:30 this morning. news 4 richard jord sn following the developments at the live desk. richard, good morning. >> reporter: hi barbara. good morning. it is still smold erg more than seven hours after that fire broke out, it looks like the home will be a total loss. to live pictures above the fire scene. you can see the white smoke still billowing in the, abut when the fire was hot it was a four-alarm fire and anne arundelfighters leading thee hydrants in the immediate area so water had to be brought in. the family who lives in the home is reportedly out of town on vacation. firefighters are still seeing if there were any victim there's. hosing down the hot spots making sure the fire is completely out, but it looks like an empty shell of that home. take a look at what the house

looked like before. 16,000 square feet of lavish property there in annapolis, now side-by-side you can see the damage done in a matter of hours. it looks, again, like that home will be a total loss. destroyed there by these flames. still no word on the cause. firefighters expect to be there most of the day working to put out those hot spots, also checking to see if perhaps there is a victim lying there in that rubble. for now the latest from the live desk. barbara? >> thank you, richard. today thousands honoring the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. preparing a march in southeast d.c. a look at the parade route. megan mcgrath is live with what the day means to those people there these many years after martin luther king jr.'s death. >> reporter: barbara, here here on mlk avenue south east and you can see all the people who turned up for the peace march about to get under way followed by a parade.

we have been talking all morning long to folks. people at mlk memorial and at other places around the city asking them about martin luther king jr.'s life and legacy. ♪ a day to remember through song -- ♪ and with ceremony. a wreath laid at the martin luther king memorial this morning. although dead for more than 40 years, king's message of -- >> hope prosperity. liberation. >> reporter: remains relevant today. >> ferguson was the wake-up call for this country, and so again it shows some things have changed and some things really haven't change and a fundamental level. >> i'm an australian. so we also have racial issues with our own indigenous people. so for us to be here on a day like today reminds us of the imparities to treat people equally.

>> reporter: many who came to his memorial this morning brought their children so they too, can carry king's message. >> the next generation has to keep up where he left off. if it doesn't we'll basically be back to square one, and that would be a terrible thing. >> to be honest a little overwhelming. you grow up learning a lot about dr. king and what he stood for, and what it means for my race and what it means for the world in general. >> he would help people or just understand what's right and what's not right. >> reporter: and so the peace march set to get underway right around 11:30, that's what we're told followed by the parade. actually there are events taking place all around the region today including a very special gathering later this afternoon at the national cathedral. in southeast, megan mcgrath news 4. >> thank you. a gray monday morning, but temperatures are on the rise now. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us with his first

forecast. hey, chuck. >> good morning, barbara and good morning, everybody. plenty of clouds around this morning. even a few lonesome ray showers and isolated snow showers as well this morning. here's the view from the tower looking southbound. you can still see littl shafts of light rain trying to get to the ground. most evaporateing before it gets from the clouds to the grass. nonetheless, seen a weak wave of low pressure go by that's wrung out a couple raindrops and twitter followers in damascus said it was snowing a brief time an hour or so ago. that pink area between damascus where we had a little bit of light snow. not enough to cove the ground but conversational snowflakes to say the least, all running southeast-bound and drying up as it goes. see the general trend on improving weather picture for us. as a result a cloudy start now. temperatures in the 40s. most neighborhoods, and getting more and more clearing as the afternoon goes along and as a result tempera the upper 40s. breezy at times. more sun and clouds today.

no bitter cold in the week. and tracking more rain or snow this weekend. more than whip the seven barbara? >> chuck, thank you. searching for the parents of a toddler found wandering the streets alone in southeast washington. police found the little boy just before 1:00 this morning along morris road. the child was not wearing shoes. right enough to the toddler is with child protective services. and right now a woman killed in metro's underground emergency is being remembered by her family and friends. about an hour ago they walked in for a memorial service for carol glover. it's happening at the capitol hill baptist churn in northeast d.c. the medical examiner ruled her death acute respiratory failure causeed by smoke xpoesh perp lived in alexandria on a train when smoke filled the plaza and train last monday. congress holds a briefing with the national transportation safety board on wednesday, d.c.

breaking news just in to the live desk right now pap construction worker taking a frightening fall in rockville. pictures from montgomery county fire and rescue on chapman avenue near thompson avenue. that construction worker was injured. he reportedly fell from the roof and landed on a fifth floor balcony. he was about 60 feet above ground. he was eventually lowered to safety by firefighters and paramedics. no word on the extent of his injuries but he is receiving some medical treatment now. that's the latest from the live desk. barbara, back to you. >> thank you. see you again shortly. amazing, an alarming video of a man with a tire iron in his head. right now the man you're looking at is in serious condition. attacked with a tire iron in new zealand when somehow this happened not exactly sure how. he called for an ambulance from a gas station and what the station's owner said.

>> it looked like a halloween stunt where people with those halloween costumes but that was real when turned around blood was coming down the side of his head. >> the man had to be taken to two different hospitals before doctors could remove the tire iron from his head. police in knew zellnew zealand say their looking forewhoever attacked him and why. a report in the "new york times" u.s. cyber spies penetrated the cyber systems and how they knew north korea was behind the sony attack. monitoring north korea the past four years. the u.s. did not have any advance warning of the sony hacking through its monitoring program, though. the fbi learned about it when sony called the agency back in november. that's when investigators went back over the surveillance and confirmed that north korea was, in fact, behind the hacking. we now know who will be sitting with the first lady during the state of the union.

. new today, vice president joe biden is honoring the legacy of martin luther king jr. this morning he spoke at the organization of minority women's 31st annual mlk breakfast in wilmington, delaware. >> they had families they had stories, they had a humanity dae nigh denied them by an assassinal but it who judged them by the color of the uniform they wore. as dr. king would say, not the content of their character. >> while biden was speaking investigators are trying to figure out who fired shots at the vice president's home in delaware. nbc's tracie potts reports on that. >> reporter: this morning, the secret service is trying to figure out who drove by vice president biden's home saturday night and fired multiple

gunshots. the secret service heard it so did a neighbor. one agent saw a car speeding by. soon after police report more shots fired in the area. >> questioning people trying to bring it all together. maybe checking cameras in the last retay place they passed to see if they can figure who was in the car, who was shooting what's it about? >> reporter: half an hour after the shooting a man drove by. questioned and detained after resisting arrest and not charged in the shooting. last week a delaware national guards base the vice president uses raised security after five cars stopped by in two days to ask for directions. authorities found that suspicious. also last week the fbi revealed separate plots to bomb the u.s. capitol and poison house speaker john boehner. four months earlier, a knife-wielding fence jumper made it all the way into the white house. the secret service is under scrutiny. as a result there's an internal shake-up happening right now with the secret service. four top managers are being

replaced. tracie potts, nbc news washington. right now hundreds of people are at a rally for gun rights in virginia. they're at the general assembly in richmond. several gun rights speakers are scheduled to address the crowd right now on the say the capitol grounds. this happens every year in the commonwealth. a few buses left from our area to go there this morning, and should return this afternoon. the state of the union is tomorrow and right now president obama is putting the finishing touches on his speech. he has spend weeks in a pseudocampaign to push his message this year and could make big changes to tax law and also make internet access and the price of college key points in his address, we are hearing. even though republicans are expected to reject most of his proposals, he put out a message online asking for bipartisan support. >> and i'll call on this new congress to join me in putting aside the political games and finding areas where we agree so we can deliver for the american people.

>> the address begins at 9:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. and we've also learned about lots of people who will be there. alan gross, from montgomery county in the first lady's box. you probably remember he was released from cuba just months ago. he spent five years in prison there. gross' wife judy will also be there. also from our area, kathy pham who works to improve health care in computer science, donald is the hetty, working to fight ebola in west africa will also be there. and catherine pugh from maryland also part of the white house guests that day. there will be a lot of road closures in place for the state of the union address. we also learned the potomac and anacostia rivers restricted. the coast guard is blocking off the big area in yellow starting at 5:00 p.m. you can see it on our map, to maintain security throughout the

to go after those who are the top, top, top of the income bracket. the .01%. not eastern the 1 percent. the .01% called the trust fund loophole. he'll go after sort of monies it's complicated, we explain it on our website and on our show today. monies stored away not taxed as sort of capital gains allowing the ultra wealthy, top .01% to own 42% of the wealth in the united states. leaving the message of economic populism. >> any big surprises we can expect in the speech tomorrow? >> no. not to the many and that's reflective where the president is. he's now in the seventh yeesh of his presidency. we shouldn't expect there to be too many surprises in that front. i do think, though this message about economic populism and how it pertains to the top .01%

that's sort of framing a debate for the democratic party moving forward. president obama is sort of capturing a progressive bend that was really brought in by the senator from massachusetts, elizabeth warren. >> quickly, can you tell us who you quick joni ernst will be like -- >> a meteoric rise. this time last year barbara, a pig farmer in the state legislature in iowa. talking about castrating pigs. right? in her campaign ad. she's a veteran. she's someone that a lot of republicans have her eye on and will be giving the response to president obama. that's a big deal to get thatut for her ahead in 2016. it's a possibility of her to be definitely on the short list of vp pockets for republicans. america will be introduced to her tomorrow for the first time. >> luke happy to have you with msnbc shift. check us out. 10:00 a.m. friday morning. already up on the web. check it out. >> looking forward to seeing

right now in the southeast, an suv on an icy road in yonkers, new york narrowly missing a long line of parked cars and then smashing into a curb. the driver was not hurt. but yesterday icy roads did lead to crashes that claimed at least five lives across the northeast. drivers were urged to use caution. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us now. things are okay although i was out earlier.

a little ice, even with the tebs? >> a little bit, not much. temperatures well above the freezing mark that ought finish off the snowflakes on the road. a weather picture, clouds moving out. city camera view looking towards the washington monument there. noecht the notice the blue appearing in the sky. clouds scouring out by a drying westerly breeze. as a result we should get more and more sun as the day goes along. 45 degrees at reagan national airport. northwestily wind averaging 13 miles an hour. a cooler drier air mass pushing in. as a result things get clearers a the day goes along. cool air is the rule. in leesburg and gaithersburg and near 50 in pullculpepper and stafford.

hometown forecast a report of snowflakes earlier today, damascus maryland the shout-out for the home town forecast today. mostly cloudy now. 40 degrees. no snow left. we did have that report of some snow from about 9:00 and 9:30 this morning. by 4:00 today, clearing skies, more sunshine. breezy. temperature 44 degrees and 37 by 8:00 tonight. across the rest of the area temperatures climbing to near 48 degrees for a high tote and drifting back into the low 40s by 5:00 or 6:00 this evening and by 10:00 tonight back down into the upper 30s. milder inside the capital beltway, but it remains on the breezy side. time lapse radar, going back four hours in time. you can see this impulse of snow that you drifted across the high spots of northern montgomery county and western howard county. that did not, again, accumulate to anything but it did get a few mentions on my twitter feed earlier today. anytime you see a little bit of snow like that coming out you can feel free and encouraged to send me a note.

now all that light rain and snow shower activity pushed out to the south. moving away. we won't worry about that. for now all eyes turn back out to the far west. doesn't look like much yet. that's the leading edge of our next elberta clipper racing in during the day wednesday. what to expect wednesday? rain showers likely in the morning changing to a mix of wet snow in the afternoon and there may be minor accumulations. have our storm team 4 app at the ready free from the going's play store or itune store. for today, clearing skies leading to a seasonably cold night tonight, temperatures back into the 20s and 30s. tomorrow a mix of clouds and sunshine. not a bad day to be outside but clouds come back in by early wednesday. that chance for rain mid-wednesday morning and with the colder air, a chance anyway for snow up through the early afternoon hours. best chances to see accumulations across the northern area. but maybe a little snow coating the ground inside the capital beltway by wednesday mid to late

afternoon, but a temperature challenge for this clipper to work with unlike the last one. this one has nowhere near as much cold air to work with. 40s today. near 50 tomorrow. maybe that rain/snow mix on wednesday and then clearing out a little bit late in the week and so far barbara the weekend ahead looks great. >> sounds good. thanks chuck. this morning, a kentucky sheriff says the teenagers who staged a multistate crime spree are scared and just want to go home. police in florida arrested 18-year-old dalton hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend. the couple is accused of stealing cars and checks. authorities plan to extradite them to kentucky to face several felony charges. black lawmakers are promising a new legislative fight for criminal justice reform. the push comes after months of protests over the deaths of unarmed minorities at the hands of police to underscore their goal members of the congressional black caucus attended church in ferguson missouri where michael brown

was killed back in august. the chairman said that protests are a "turning point in race relations." the visit to ferguson coincided with martin luther king jr. day which is of course today. a family is hoping surveillance video will help catch a driver who crashed into their home in prince george's county. the crash happened early saturday morning at a home at the intersection of chapel ford road and it caused damage to the garage and laundry area pap father and his kids were home at the time and no one hurt. his wife was at the hospital with her sister who had just given birth. if you recognize that car that hit the house, please call bowie police. on this martin luther king day, several are giving back to their communities. a lot of people are giving back. in prince george's county the fighter department and ems teams are joining members of the american red cross for a day of service. they are going door to door to hand out working smoke alarms to

homeowners who don't have them already. and can you volunteer in fairfax county. head over to the jewish community center of northern virginia in fairfax or the lutheran church in mclean. the next scheft begins at 1:30 this afternoon. this is the sixth year volunteer fairfax is inviting you to give back to your community in honor of dr. king. we have an update on a story you saw first on "news4 midday" last week. a silver spring couple investigated for neglect for allowing their children to walk home from a park alone. she stopped by the "today" show with her children who say they're responsible team's self-reliance and responsibility. >> we're completely shocked this is a net case investigation, we're amazed this has become a national conversation, because we're just doing what our parents did, what was considered perfectly normal just one generation ago. >> they say the investigation infringes on their parental rights and invades their

nbc's marpty mclean tells us how scientists are using soil to develop a cure for bacterial disease. >> reporter: this bucket of dirt from maine could hold the key to beating drug-resistant super bugs. a team of researchers led by scientists at northeastern university has discovered and antibiotic that looks to be effective at killing deadly pathogens. even more promises those pathogens weren't able to develop a resistance to the antibiotic. >> we've shown it is highly efficacious in curing mice in a number of diseases and that is a good predictor that it may be efficacious in humans as well. >> reporter: it's not hard to find bacteria in dirt but very hard to make it glow lab. until now. the researchers used and i-chip a new technology helping microbe microbes grow. >> this gives us a discovery platform from which we can

discover with reasonable confidence additional compounds. >> reporter: creating new pathogens they can't adapt to could help heal a worldwide crisis. the u.s. centers for decease control say 2 million people a year develop the drug resistant bacteria and die. >> it is reaching a tipping point because the development of new antibiotics has been pretty slow over the past decades. >> reporter: researches home the discovery of this new antibiotics may change that. but before you grab a shovel and start digging for potentially valuable main dirt researchers won't say where they found it. only it was a grassy field somewhere along the coast. one of the researchers dug it up while here on vacation. the scientists say it's likely there are many other compounds in other dirt piles waiting to be discovered but the one in maine -- >> starting to wonder maybe there is something special about

it. so we will go back and we will sample there, and we'll see what happens. and new this morning a new group is now coming down against the redskins name. the fritz-pollard alliance created to promote diversity and works closely with the league. they talked with the nfl for months before writing a public letter saying the name is disrespectful and undig if a phied. the grew played for the redskins back60s. and new this morning, some question about the game balls used in the afc's championship game. the nfl is looking into whether the patriots deflated game balls during the 45-7 victory over the colts last night. apparently one ball was taken out of action to be weighed. if there is proof of intent the patriots could lose some of their draft picks. however, the patriots will still be playing in the super bowl february 1st is game day.

right now a multimillion dollar transformation of thomas jefferson's monticello is under way. tour at the historic mountaintop plantation set to be expanded as 11 spaces upstairs restored and open to visitors. the tours are designed to give people a much closer look at both the architecture and private lives of jefferson and his family. >> you could actually get beyond the rope and see and experience the house and maybe a little more intimate manner. >> bedrooms and a nursery are re-created on the second floor. monticello had been using many of those rooms for storage over the years. the restoration should wrap up by this march. all of these guys? i know your name. they feel invincible with you up
