their children in his final moments. and the son of the late marion barry preparing to turn himself in to police over an incident inside a d.c. bank. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. first tonight, a tragic scene in annapolis where there's still no sign of six family members missing since a massive fire destroyed their waterfront mansion. >> firefighters will still only say they are unaccounted for. but news 4's jackie bensen is live with some new developments now coming from the scene. jackie? >> reporter: well we can tell you at this point that the homeowner, his wife and their four grandchildren are widely feared to be victims of this fire. the annapolis gazette is reporting tonight the children's private school has sent home a letter to families and will be closed tomorrow. however, because the damage is still at this time preventing a search fire officials are referring to them as unaccounted for. a team of 15 to 20 agents from

the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms is scheduled to arrive tuesday afternoon to begin trying to figure out what happened here. neighbors wonder how the 16,000-square-foot mansion equipped with the best of technology including an automatic alarm system could have burned so completely in the middle of the night. atf agent says the enormous size of the home played a role in the decision to request a national response team. >> some of the investigators here were commenting that some of the large structure fires they've been to church fires, this is a lot larger than majority of the structures they've ever worked. >> reporter: by the time firefighters arrived at 3:30 a.m. in response to an alert from the alarm company to a 911 call from a neighbor who saw the flames the floors were collapsing and they could not fight the blaze from inside or conduct any search for occupants. these are before and after images of the structure, nicknamed the castle and owned

looking for the shooter. check our nbc washington app for any updates as they come in. developing right now a bomb threat phoned into jfk airport in new york forced passengers from two flights off their planes. a passenger on board one of the flights from san fran to jfk recorded this video as the flight was evacuated. the other flight was leaving for tel aviv israel. both were listed as delta flight 468. security searched both planes found nothing, and gave the all clear late tonight. federal authorities are investigating the threat. only on news 4 tonight, the final heroic actions of a husband trying to save his family. we told you about corey mattison's murder in ashburn, virginia, last friday. police say he was shot and killed by his ex-wife's husband minh nguyen. even in the last minutes of his life he was trying to protect the children who were still in the house. news 4's derek ward has our

story. >> reporter: police say 38-year-old minh nguyen a one-time social media tech pioneer and the ex-husband of denise mattison burst into the home and shot her new husband. corey mattison died in the rear of the house. it's believed he led the gunman out back away from the family. denise was just getting home as it all unfolded. >> he was my hero. >> reporter: the couple had only been married for three months. denise said it was the fulfillment of a destiny. she'd seen him in a dream years before they had met. >> when i met cory i knew he was without a doubt my man with kind eyes. >> reporter: the blending of their two families children and siblings. for denise's brother, it was a dream come true. his sister had a protector. >> to see the way that he loved denise on a consistent basis, to see the way he treated her, there's nothing more than a brother could ask for. >> reporter: cory had been a college and professional athlete

that radio encryption may have hindered communication during a rescue attempt in the tunnel. emergency responders may not have been able to talk to metro officials after the train filled with smoke. wednesday, congressional, metro and ntsb leaders will meet to discuss what happened. new at 11:00 tonight, the son of the late marion barry plans to turn himself into police as soon as tomorrow over an angry outburst at a bank. christopher barry got into an argument with the teller in the pnc bank in southwest. he threw a trash can and destroyed a security camera then told the clerk he would, quote, have somebody waiting for you when you get off. barry is now facing two misdemeanor counts. he's a candidate to fill his late father's ward 8 council seat. terry mcauliffe said he's under way to a speedy recovery after a procedure to drain fluid

chanting protesting recent police violence. some honored the civil rights leader with a day of service. hundreds of volunteers in northern virginia community college here packed food kits for the hungry. dr. king's daughter is calling on people to remember her father's legacy of nonviolence as they call for justice in recent police shootings. bernice king told a group in atlanta to have the nation choose a nonviolent coexistence. president obama, mrs. obama and daughter malia helped draw and assemble literacy kits at the boys and girls club of greater washington. the kits will help boost reading and writing skills for children. a family who just moved into a montgomery county neighborhood found a racist message on their home this morning. neighbors there quickly helped them remove it. this is what the african-american chevy chase family woke up to. the message uses the n-word and

says go home. it was spray painted on the garage door. family has only been living in this glenmore drive community for five days. a neighbor who helped the victims clean up the message said the timing of the act is sickening. >> horrified. we've never seen anything like this in this neighborhood and to have it happen on martin luther king's birthday is gross. >> montgomery county police tonight are treating this as a hate crime. the finishing touches are still being put on president obama's next-to-the last state of the union address. much of it will sound familiar when he speaks on capitol hill tomorrow. the white house has already announced several major programs that create the foundation of the speech. free community college tuition, paid sick leave, a tax hike on the rich and a tax cut for the middle class. the tax plan has already been roundly slammed by republicans who have promised to block some of the proposals. you can watch the address right here on nbc 4.

smashing a car. this video taken on i-95 in new brunswick, new jersey yesterday. that out of control semirushing toward the vehicle and swerved out of the way at the last possible second over the median there. icy road conditions caused accidents across the northeast yesterday. new tonight on news 4, a d.c. woman is in jail tonight accused of leaving her infant son alone in a car. metro transit police found the car illegally parked along michigan avenue near the brookland catholic metro station just before 6:00 tonight. they tell us the 1-year-old was strapped in a car seat but alone. the boy's mother nikita pettis returned a short time later and tried to drive away. she's charged now with child neglect. the child is now with his at disneyland. now it has spread to several states. health officials say an outbreak of the measles has doubled in size in just the last week. as erica edwards reports, the virus has been wiped out for so

long it's catching some doctors by surprise. >> reporter: more than 50 people have been diagnosed with the measles in an outbreak that dpan in december at california's disneyland. >> we're much more concerned. >> reporter: now cases have been reported in utah colorado and washington state. the airborne virus is so contagious contagious it can stick around after an infected person has left the room. >> it can survive on dry surfaces for hours. >> reporter: measles causes fever, a cough and runny nose. it's marked by a signature rash that may not show up until after the patient has been contagious for days. >> it can lead to blindness, it can lead to encephalitis which is an infection of the brain. >> reporter: 13 people are also sick in a separate outbreak in south dakota. one clinic there offered booster shots for free. >> you're not just putting yourself at risk it's others that you put at risk if you get sick and pass it along. >> reporter: many in the outbreak were not vaccinated

either because they were too young or parents decided against vaccinating their children. doctors say a decrease in vaccination rightates is the main reason the nation has seen outbreaks in recent years. 600 people were infected in 2014 the worst year for measles in over a decade. well, they're their way to the super bowl but the seahawks official twitter account made a big fumble today. this photo was tweeted out showing russell wilson crying next to a martin luther king quote with the caption, we shall overcome. fans were not too happy and the tweet was deleted. they later sent out an apology saying we did not intend to compare football to the civil rights legacy of dr. king. a new england patriot can call himself a hero now after winning the afc championship last night. vince wilfork helped rescue a woman from an overturned suv.

now innds out of the south at 6 miles per hour. we're looking at a few clouds but most of the area fairly clear. that allows temperatures to fall into the 20s. 27 manassas 28 in gaithersburg. what are we seeing? radar, there's nothing to show right now in our area. so we're not expecting anything over the next 24 hours even though there's a clipper system back to the west. here it is right around the chicagoland area. this one will track just to the north. any time these clippers head to the north of us they give us something in the way of milder conditions. and they take the moisture to the north. the next one will drape itself down and go right over our region. if it's north of us we're talking milder conditions and mostly rain, if it's just to the south of us we'll see snow. that clipper moves up to the north, we will see the clouds from that storm system though. 46 in gaithersburg 51 in

culpepper. your forecast tomorrow on the low side. we'll see clouds some sun. it will be on the mild side. you don't need to take anything special with you tomorrow afternoon, just a jacket maybe the coat. timing it out, 9:00 tomorrow no problems. 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, dealing with the cloud cover around the region. some areas will see some sun, too. then on wednesday, that's when we see that next clipper system move in. still kind of out there as far as what exactly we're going to be seeing. 9:00 still nothing around the d.c. metro area. that means rush hour may be okay here. this is the critical time between 10:00 and 1:00, that's when we see a burst of snow from gaithersburg baltimore. there's that rain/snow line we have to figure out where that sets up too. then that storm system changes over to rain as we do have milder air moving in. here's the impact.
