there were no witnesses. so at this point they have to treat it as such. a lot of new information today for the first time digging through what's left of a massive waterfront mansion that was destroyed by fire. it's believed to have claim the lives of six family members, adults and children. they are still unaccounted for.

killing barnes. her body turned up in the susquehanna river in 2011 more than a year after she disappeared while staying in baltimore. the proceedings against johnson resulted in two mistrials before the judge said today there is just not enough evidence to convict pim. simphylicia barnes. >> police say a gunman shot and critically wounded a doctor inside brigham and women's hospital then killed himself. we're told the shooter walked into the hospital around 11:00 this morning, went to the second floor and asked for the doctor by name. he then shot the doctor twice outside an examination room. police are trying to determine a motive. >> there were some above-average temperatures today but winter weather is on the way. >> for the lowdown, let's go straight to storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson with your first forecast. v.j.? >> here we go again another winter storm system for us for some areas this will be just a

candidates they've hired a defensive coordinator joe barry the 44-year-old was a san diego chargers linebackers coach from 2011 to 2014. he was the defensive coordinator for the detroit lions during their winless 0-16 season. now, he does have a connection to the redskins. he worked with jay gruden and bruce allen in tampa when they were all together with the buccaneers. this is the final major hire for the redskins who have now made two big changes on their staff and the biggest one thus far is bringing on that new gm. we'll have more coming up at news 4 at 6:00. back to you guys. new word this afternoon that the son of marion barry is expected to turn himself in tomorrow after an incident at a d.c. bank. police say christopher barry lashed out at a pnc bank teller after he was told his account was overdrawn. barry allegedly told the clerk he would, quote, have somebody waiting for you when you get off. court documents also show he threw a trash can smashing a security camera at the bank.

he's currently campaigning to fill his late father's seat on the d.c. council. a woman is recovering right now after being pulled out of a burning apartment building today. this is what it looked like on oak street in northeast washington when intense flames and smoke shot out of the windows. before firefighters arrived, we learned a man ran inside and helped an 89-year-old woman and her son get out. ahead in our next hour, nutz 4ews4's pat collins talks with that rescuer. jobs and your money. that's what you can expect to hear about tonight in president obama's state of the union speech. he will pitch tax credits, paid sick leave days, faster internet, and free community college to help the middle class. he plans to pay for it with $300 billion in tax hikes on the wealthy, a plan that has little chance of passing the republican-controlled congress, leading some to suggest the president is positioning the party for 2016. >> middle-class families are

metro transit police want you to look at photos of two people they want to talk to about a shooting on a bus. the man is the suspected shooter. the woman was traveling with him. that's according to police. the shooting happened after an argument on a metro bus around 10:30 last night on h street northwest, not far from massachusetts avenue. two men were hit. they are expected to be okay. there were at least 40 people on that bus. isis releases a new video threatening the lives of hostages. >> the giant ransom, the terrorists are asking for and new information on the men in captivity. a safety project disaster. why 100 tons of concrete came crashing down on a highway. plus contraception controversy. why the pope's comments about sex today are getting lots of shares on facebook.

you're looking at a safety project gone terribly wrong. part of a bridge collapsed as crews tried to take it down last night in cincinnati sending 100 tons of concrete crashing onto an interstate. one worker was killed and a tractor-trailer driver was hurt. a witness remembers hearing a loud boom then seeing all the police cars rushing to the scene. >> he came behind me flying past me. i look over to the right and i see at least 15 to 20 more cops. but i kind of knew right then and there that maybe something had failed or something collapsed. >> pretty devastating seeing it. >> transportation officials are still trying to figure out what caused the collapse. part of the highway will remain closed for the next 48 hours. the painstaking and months-long process of finding a jury for the man charged in the colorado theater massacre began today. about 7,000 potential jurors

will fill out questionnaires and then be individually selected for interviews. now, the jury will determine the fate of james holmes. he's charged with the 2012 mass shooting during a showing of "the dark knight rises." 12 people were killed 70 injured that night. the jurors will have to decide if holmes was legally sane at the time and if he should face the death penalty. >> these jurors have to be death qualified and what that means is you have to be open to both a potential sentence of life in prison or a sentence of execution. >> holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. men in captivity. isis makes new threats today against the lives of two hostages. and what they're asking for has world leaders scoffing. sex, rabbits and the vatican. the pope makes strong comments about catholics and the size of their families. and a new reason to down that cup of joe. why coffee could help fight skin

nbc's richard engle has our story. >> reporter: we've seen videos just like this in the past from isis with american journalists and british aid workers. they all ended tragically. now we're seeing it with two japanese hostages. in the same video this time we are seeing the two japanese hostages on their knees dressed in the orange jump suits and the english-speaking beheader, who has beheaded himself other hostages in previous videos, is demanding that japan pay $200 million $100 million for each of the hostages, within the next 72 hours or he says the knife he is holding will become japan's nightmare. japan has obviously come out and condemned this video. it says it is doing everything it can to free the hostages. it has not specifically said if it will or will not pay that enormous amount. >> isis has made northeast $130 million, $140 million since 2008

in ransoms. >> reporter: these two hostage one of them is a freelance journalist who was last seen when he was in the serea syrian town a few months ago. the other man had a security company but he went into syria. there have been reports describing him as something of a lost soul who went into syria to change his life. richard engle nbc news, istanbul. the first suspects to face charges in the paris terror attackses appeared in court today. prosecutors say the man provied logistical support to amedy coulibaly, the man who killed a policewoman and four people at a kosher market. in the meantime, french president francois hollande says new measures to fight terrorism will be unveiled tomorrow including new controls on jihadist travel and better monitoring of militants over the internet. >> investigators are revealing new investigation about the moments before the airasia

flight late last month. radar shows the climb was climbing at an unusually high speed at the speed of a fighter jet. the plane's pilots had just been denied permission to climb in order to avoid threatening clouds because of heavy air traffic. four minutes later, the plane disappeared, crashing and killing all 162 people on board. there is new information today after a first court appearance for the man accused of murdering his ex-wife's new husband. police say he shot corey mattison at his ashburn village home last week while two children were inside the house. the man and his ex-wife denise mattison had been arguing over child custody issues. his mom was the one who tackled him after the shooting. mattison tells news4 she takes comfort in knowing the family's faith will carry them through this time. >> so many people keep saying it's such a short time, it's such a short time. i mean, would i want, like, a

lifetime -- do i want 60 more years, 100 more years? there's not enough years someone could have given me with corey that could have been enough. >> he's being held without bond pending a hearing next week. today attorneys start to pick a jury in the sexual assault trial for a montgomery county man accused of preying on young men after playing beer bong. prosecutors say joey poindexter attacked as many as ten men. they tell us he them at beer pong tournaments and lured hem to his home in gaithersburg. at least three people reported attacks to police who say they found pictures of more victims on poindexter's phone. come rain shine or snow maryland's new governor will be sworn in outside the statehouse in annapolis tomorrow. the finishing touches are going up on the front lawn of the statehouse right now. more than 1,600 people are expected to attend larry hogan's inauguration. maryland is facing a $750

million budget deficit and it's already affecting tomorrow's festivities. on news 4 at 5:00 chris gordon will tell you what they're doing differently this year. new political tactics this afternoon in the battle over the keystone pipeline. the senate is expected to vote on building the pipeline next week. today senate democrats proposed two amendments to a bill they say they won't vote for even with them. one would require american steel be used in the construction, and the other would prohibit exporting the oil it carries. >> -- the keystone pipeline should not be built, but if it's going to be built we think it shouldn't just benefit canadian oil companies and overseas steel manufacturers but should actually benefit average american families and the average american worker. >> if the president vetoes any bill approving the pipeline, the senate is unlikely to have the votes to override it. billions of dollars on the line in a trial under way in new orleans. the federal government wants bp oil to pay another $13.7 billion

all right. you love coffee, you may be in luck. according to a new study out today, drinking four or more cup of coffee a day could lower your risk for skin cancer. >> they tracked the consumption and health of adults for four years. they found that coffee drinkers were less likely to develop melanoma. people who drank four or more cups a day had a 20% lower risk

after the shooting this weekend. police say he tried to run and they feared he had a weapon. he says the officers left him with a swollen nose rib injury, and cuts on his face. police are not commenting on those allegations. the bidens were not home at the time of the shooting. stafford county jury couldn't come to a unanimous decision on the first murder trial involving a former fbi agent. and today arthur gonzalez goes on trial for a second time. gonzalez is accused of shooting his estranged wife at their stafford county home. that was back in 2013. during the first trial he said it was self-defense after she attacked him during an argument. but prosecutors say he staged the crime scene and faked his grief. prosecutors claim he was seeing another woman at the time of the murder. a $4 million lawsuit was filed today against the kappa alpha psi fraternity for ur e-file account immediately. know that the irs irdoes not

armed robberies in montgomery county, anne arundel county and the district. these are new surveillance photos. police tell us the men are suspected in an armed robbery at a silver spring 7-eleven off colesville road on january 9th. police say the suspects threatened the store employee and took cash from the register. outrage in kentucky as a teacher was caught by school security cameras dragging a child down a hallway. the video shows her dragging the 6-year-old boy by his wrist while other students and teachers locked on. the teacher said the buy buoy was disruptive and refused to walk with her to the school's office. after the video surfaced last october, the teacher was fired but she appealed and the school board reinstated her after a seven-week suspension. parents say the system is broken. >> broken law that needs to be fixed? >> in our opinion it is. >> 15th and isherwood streets.

what are you hearing? >> reporter: jim, look down the valley. you can see the evidence man down here. police say they found three teenagers shot and wounded in this alley. the teenagers were described as students. they say the injuries are nonlife-threatening. they say this happened sometime around 3:30 after school was let out. now, police flooded this area. they're talking to the victims but so far they don't have a motive, they don't have a suspect, and they're not even sure that this is the scene where the teenagers were shot. now, we're also told police have converged on an accident at 21st and e streets -- i'm sorry -- 21st and i streets northeast. it's unclear as to whether that accident is related to the shooting here. but a lot of police are over there investigating it, and this is still going on. we veal more coming up later in the show. now back to you. >> all right. than
