an issue for people. this is a popular short cut. people take it from 450 over to 197. but as you can see, that is not going to be an option for you this morning. this is going to be closed down for the duration of the morning rush hour. we have a water main break that caused a big hole to form in the middle of the road here. crews are on the scene. they're working on it, but they just at this point dug up the pipe they haven't actually begun the work of making the repairs. so it will be with us for several more hours. so you'll have to go actually to the intersection of 450 and cut over if you're going to 197. you won't be able to take that popular short cut. church road though you're okay. church road not affected. just old annapolis road itself. back to you. i'm molette green at the live desk. right now no word from isis on the fate of two japanese men hours after a ransom ted line passes. now, japan is saying it is still

working to free them from the militant japan's government leaders describe the situation as severe. and insisted the government is still working for the release of the hostages. now the 72 hour deadline for the two $200 million ransom expired just hours ago go. muslims gathered at a mosk in tokyo to try to prayer for the men's freedom. 6:04. today a man accused of kidnapping a montgomery county judge heads back to court. he was arrested just days after the reported kidnapping in florida. according to police reports he was in a jealous rage when creighton returned to her germantown home. he grabbed her by her hair and forced her to drive her to gaithersburg. it is not known whether the judge will be at today's hearing. prince george's county police are trying to figure out who murdered a man in broad daylight in laurel.

chopper 4 was over the scene on imperial drive yesterday afternoon. police say the man was found dead with a number of gunshot wounds. police are still trying to figure out a motive. if yinformation, call prince george's county police. you could get a $25,000 reward. 6:05 now. two people are still missing after a fire at a multimillion-dollar mansion in annapolis. search crews will be digging through the rubble again today. searchers found two bodies yesterday. this morning we're getting a look at the family members who died on monday. don and sandy pyle owned the home. their grandchildren were spending the night with them. lexie and katie were just 8 and 7. charlotte was also 8 and wes was 6. atf agents hope to have a cause of the fire by monday. a single bouquet of flowers left at the saudi embassy in d.c.. a solemn tribute to saudi king abdallah who died at the age of 90.

many of you are in favor of a later school start time. a lot of people packed two hearings yesterday in rockville. some of them who spoke said they wanted school start times to be pushed back an hour or more for high school students. >> and then he was double-teamed by the sleep problems related to early start times. his anxiety became so overwhelm overwhelming, he was physically harming himself and he was suicidal. >> a sleep expert was on hand to testify about how sleep patterns for teens are different. and it may all come down to money, though. montgomery county schools say it could cost several million dollars. the superintendent is recommending all schools start 20 minutes later in order to reduce the costs. and in manassas park we told you the school district got

a grant to study year round school last year. and leaders are ready to present their plan to the community. it includes breaking with the statewide rule that starts school after labor day. they want to start would weeks s two weeks earlier. they would have more breaks and two days for students who need extra help. larry hogan is promising a balanced budget. he introduced his proposal yesterday. key items include funding for the purple line and a 2% reduction in spending for all agencies. it also includes record education spending. should you know there is a lot of cuts in some jumome are jurisdictions. it would be the state's first balanced budget in a decade. our budget puts maryland on sound financial footing without raising taxes or fees. and without eliminating agencies or departments or services

in court. prosecutors say it was a tragic accident and did not reach the level of criminal neglect against. negligence. more than 200 people gathered in ward 8 to discuss the violence. there have been six murders in the last month. people shared their thoughts along with police priests and activists so what can be done about the gun violence. >> i'm mostly upset to see our young black men killing each other. >> neighbors say recreational centers need to stay open longer. they also want more police patrols and parental involvement to help will solve the violence. i'm molette green at the live desk. we have new video just in to our newsroom showing a huge fire near downtown pittsburgh. our sister station there is reporting that three people who were trapped have been rescued, but one person is still unaccounted for. this fire spread to at least

four buildings in this neighborhood. one of them may have collapsed. this is a fire that went to at least five alarms. 6:21. tonight "dateline" will tell the story of a largo man who police say killed five women across prince george's county. jason scott will spend the rest of his life in jail as part of a plea deal he was sentenced to 85 years for two of those murs. i sat down with correspondent dennis murphy. he says scott stalked his victims in his own backyard. >> his m.o. was to put on his gear the ski mask so only the eyes showing. and crawl around the black yards of the neighborhoods where he lived. he would see the people during the day. and at night, he had some secret life and he was out there. >> you can watch more on tonight's dateline starting at 10:00 right here on nbc 4. and remember this case as he sort of stalked mothers and

daughters. he'll do time for killing two. so just a really interesting behinds scenes look at this case. let's check in with tom kierein for a look at the forecast. >> in my 32 years of frfting winter storms, every single one of them has its own personality. this one will be giving us a nasty mix of some snow some sleet and some icing. right now the storm team 4 radar is showing the leading edge of a lot of rain now into tennessee, it's into the carolinas. it is advancing off to the northeast, going to be getting closer to us by later this afternoon. now, here is the timing. initially arriving as snow and rain in the shenandoah valley and across virginia by 6:00 p.m. and coming right into the metro area around 6:30 7:00 p.m. and just to our north, it will likely change over to some sleet and icing and some snoes snoww. by 9:00 p.m. metro area and northern virginia panhandle of west virginia as well as the rest of maryland getting snow.

then during the evening hours, warmer air comes in may change to rain for a while right in washington. definitely all rain southern maryland northern neck and eastern shore. by 6:00 a.m. saturday, still some snow north of the metro area. maybe a little bit of rain freezing rain right in washington. ending during the afternoon maybe as a little more snow and rain. most of it, though dwunone by noon. quickly exits and we'll clear out saturday night leaving about 1 to 2 inches of some sleet and snow northern virginia, nearby suburbs in maryland. farther north and west, shall location some locations 2 to 4 inches. so kind of a nasty mix as this does move on in. then sunday we'll get sunshine back with highs reaching the mid-40s. another key thing that may keep the totals down a little bit is our afternoon temperatures today into the mid-40s. and that will keep those pavement temperatures above freezing into the evening hours. so initially some of that snow falling will be melting on roads

and then pile up. a thnd snow likely on monday for the morning commute and into the afternoon, 1 to 4 inches. cold after that sunshine highs only near 30 degrees on tuesday and wednesday next week. next weather and traffic on the 1s the hour by hour break down over the next 24 hours. now a look at our roads. 95 north in maryland here at 32 an overturned vehicle with the left lane blocked. so right now 95 north bound looks okay. probably going to get a little slow if you're headed out anytime soon. taking a look at 395, our slowest spot in the area right now as you get inbound there past the beltway, that's from an earlier crash at seminary road. delays of course remain as they sometimes do. wide look at things overall looking pretty typical beltway a little slow here 295 as you're passing 50. river road at willard avenue some construction there. one outbound lane and one inbound lane the only things open at this point. could get a little slow. and then in you bowie, we have

that storm could bring us a nasty mixed bag of stuff tonight and tomorrow. tom closely watching this. he'll tell you the timing for when the rain will start and when the rain will start to turn over to snow. that's at 6:51. it is now 6:45. this wean could make you late for work. a water main break has a popular cut through shut down. megan mcgrath is on old annapolis road with more. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with wssc and got an update. what they're telling us is thats problem was where a fire hydrant connected to a 24 inch water main. that connection blew and all the water that gushed out, it caused the erosion around the pipe and in the roadway. and you can see the large hole that we've got here in the middle of all apnap police road. they have dug down they are starting to bring in crews to actually make the repair. but this is going to take hours we're told. this is a popular cut through.

a lot of people use old annapolis road to get from 450 to 197. you are not going to be able to do that during the morning rush hour. the area of this hole is right by church road. church road itself is okay but you won't be able to take the left happened turn on to old annapolis road. so what you'll have to do is go down to the light, take 450 directly to 197. they're not sure exactly how long it will take to make this repair but it will be hours. so you're not going to be able to use this cut through this morning. there are about 250 people who are without water. i'm told that the water main itself is okay. it was that connection they are starting to get the water back on to the people and making the repairs to the connection and hopefully get things back to normal in a couple of hours. back to you. i'm molette green at the live desk. japan says it is still working to try to save the lives of two of its citizens taken hostage by

timing on its arrival, by around 6:00 p.m. it comes into the metro area. maybe initially as rain. and then quickly changes over to snow especially north and west of the i-95 corridor. a lot of rain south and east through the rest of the evening. by dawn on saturday much of the heaviest rains will be gone but we'll have snow falling to our west and northwest. that will continue into around noon time. and then it should quickly change over to just some brief rain on the eastern shore as it's all gone by early to midafternoon on saturday. leaving in its wake about 1 to 2 inches of snow in the metro area. suburbs in virginia and maryland. 2 to 4 inches farther north and west. dark blue zone including shenandoah valley highest amounts in the ridges as usual and up near the pennsylvania border. temperatures are cold. p layer up this morning as you're heading out the door. we're in the 20s. this afternoon, low to mid-40s. that will keep the pavement temperatures above freezing. rain initially and then changing
