area. this is just the start. we're not done yet. we have another 12 hours of this to go. look at the moisture down to the south. we'll watch as this moisture moves in then the cold air back to the west will also begin to make its way back into our region. because of the colder air and because we're still seeing areas of sleet and temperatures near freezing that winter weather advisory continues until noon for areas to the west of i-95. back to the west they've expanded the winter storm warning back into west virginia we continue to see snow in these areas, continue to see freezing rain. travel could be a problem as we make our way through tomorrow morning, but then we get ready for snow. it could be a lot of snow for us on sunday night. earlier tonight we found snow falling steadily in sterling virginia. while it may have looked impressive primarily it was only sticking to cars in this parking lot. >> road crews have been preparing for this all day. virginia has 500 trucks out treating roads and more on stand by. in d.c. 100 trucks are on the

streets tonight. maryland has activated its 24-hour emergency operation center. its trucks are ready to salt and plow if needed. they're preparing for round two on sunday. we'll be tracking these winter storms all weekend. download our washington app to get the latest forecast on the go. and tune in to news 4 starting at 6:00 a.m. for updates on how the storm could impact your weekend. we have breaking news coming out of the district. communication was sporadic rescuers went to the wrong tunnel. those are just two of the revelations from a newly released report on the deadly metro accident. shomari stone is here to break it down for us. chris, tonight d.c. homeland security's initial report is revealing more details about what happened specifically when it comes to a communication breakdown. the d.c. fire department recently made a switch to new radios and started using them in december. they tested them and found

communication problemsng at the l'enfant plaza metro station. both metro transit and d.c. fire troubleshooted and couldn't find an answer to the problem with the radios. tonight they say radio communication was sporadic. once rescue one arrived metro transit police told them about the stranded passengers and told the rescuers about power to the third rail. rescue one couldn't share information about the battalion fire chief because of the radio communications. so responders communicated face-to-face. we've also learned the first responders went to the wrong tunnel the green line, instead of the yellow line tunnel where the smoke started. once the first responders reached the train, the back doors didn't open also according to the report the first 911 call came at 3:14 for a fire at the gallery place metro station. emergency responders later radioed that there was nothing at the scene. at 3:18 there was another call about smoke coming from a metro

ventilation shaft at ninth and main avenues southwest. fire and ems got there six minutes later and said they smelled smoke. at the same time a call came in from the metro supervisor that there was heavy smoke in the upper level of the l'enfant plaza metro station. the district of columbia's homeland and security management agency will release a more detailed report with recommendations over the next few week. shomari stone, news 4. ♪ young killa ♪ >> a gun-carrying man frowns for the camera on youtube, but it's what police say he did before starring in this video that could land him behind bars. the man in this video is responsible for a savage attack. he allegedly shot a disabled veteran during a robbery and carjacking.

as you'll see only on news 4, this video could be the key to solving the crime ♪ need money young killa ♪ >> reporter: the video was posted a few weeks after the november 4th shooting. it shows attempted murder suspect rakeem solomon. he's wearing a jacket and plaid shirt, the same jacket he was wearing the night of the sh some of which is seen in security cameras. yes, that's a gun in his right hand. detectives believe it's the same one involved in the shooting. the 65-year-old victim -- we're not identifying him -- described what had happened that afternoon. he'd gone to a park can col plex in bladensburg to meet what he thought were two customers for the wholesale goods he brings down from new york and resells just before christmas so he could buy presents for his 15 grandchildren, the joy of his heart. >> his left hand had never been out of his coat pocket.

>> reporter: when the men dwrabed him and demanded his keys and money, he resisted. then he thought of his money and the vets he counsels. he turned them over. that's when he heard the words he never forget. the guy in the driver's seat said bust him anyway. >> reporter: charlie earle heard the story as he sat by the victim's hospital bed. the bullet caused massive internal injure. in his dogged pursuit for justice for a man disabled serving his country, the suspect went by one nickname killa. and that led eventually to the video and the identity of rakeem solomon who has managed to stay just steps ahead of the law. >> he's considered armed and extremely dangerous. >> reporter: the victim says he's profoundly grateful for the detective's effort. >> i get injured in prince william county than i did in vietnam. >> reporter: there's a substantial reward for information leading to and

conviction of rakeem solomon. it's done through the crimestoppers organization and callers never have to give their name to get the money. people were forced out of their homes after an arlington condo complex caught fire. the flames were confined to one unit but smoke damaged several other units in the building. the fire broke out on the 2800 block of south wakefield this evening. two people were transported to the hospital but right now it looks like they're going to be okay. a fire tonight at the white oak laundry in montgomery county caused $300,000 wort of damage. lint in a duct work caused that fire. tonight firefighters say they found another body in the charred remains of that burned-out mansion in anap o is. that brings the total number recovered to five. fire gutted the mansion earlier this week. news 4 has learned specially trained dogs that can sniff out accelerants have been on the scene since atf agents arrived.

investigators won't say if the dogs have actually detected anything but crews will work through the weekend if need be to recover the last body believed to be inside. police say a man from loudoun county sheriff says he met with someone in november and hired them to murder his ex-wife. deputies caught wind of the plan and arrested him yesterday. investigators say his ex-wife was never in actual danger but he's being held without bond. a special education teacher has been under investigation for possessing child porn since september. the parents at montgomery county are just finding out tonight. police arrested peter flynn on wednesday, but officials at beth es ka chevy chase high school removed him from the classroom back in september. officials say they didn't notify parents then because the investigation was ongoing and flynn had been put on administrative leave.

new at 11:00, beshrnie madoff tells his deceased sons had nothing to do with his ponzi scheme. the painy inflicted on others is nothing compared to the pain of losing his two sons. one son committed suicide in 2010, another died of cancer last year. madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence. a federal judge has struck down alabama's ban on same-sex marriage. because the judge did not stay the decision marriages could start monday. but the state attorney general is seeking a stay in the case at least until the supreme court rules on the issue. the justices will hear arguments on the marriage bans in april and expect to rule by june. for the moment alabama becomes the 37th state to allow same-sex marriage. rg-3 highlight is part of a new effort to get the team to change its name. the national congress of american indians released this

up it melts and holes begin. it's also too cold for the plant that makes the patches. >> when the plant opens, we use the hot mix, and that's involving a permanent patching of the pothole. it's more durable than the cold mix. >> that permanent mixture cannot be used to fill the potholes until the spring. >> extreme pothole. >> that feels a long way off. >> anybody who has driven around here lately knows exactly what extreme pothole means. >> that's the thing. we're going to continue to get cold. really next week we've got the heart of the arctic air coming in. the next storm brings us the cold and the snow, that sunday night to monday then it gets really cold around here. right now we've got rain sleet and snow all across the area all three. you can even throw in some freezing rain out there. four different types of

precipitation happening right now across our area. storm team 4 radar picking it up as good as it can here. we've got heavier rain making its way down through annapolis to the d.c. metro area. snow in culpepper and around leaseberg. most of it is of the snow and rain variety. that will continue. we're seeing temperatures close to the freezing mark now. heads up roads are getting a little bit slick especially the side roads and sidewalks. i was up on an elevated area tonight and that was already on the slick side. a lot more moisture to go. this is the first round of moisture that we'll see. tomorrow's round with with the cold air. you can see what that's doing. it's bringing snow down to mississippi and alabama. we'll have a chance to see this rain change back to snow during the day tomorrow. here are those temperatures. 37 right now in d.c. 33 in hagerstown so very close to that freezing mark. we only had to go just below 32

to get any real problems. we're seeing that out towards the cumberland area into portions of west virginia and even around the blue ridge. heads up if you're going to be driving, temperatures will drop another degree or two, but that's enough. that's why we have that winter storm warning back to the west. for the areas in pink here frederick county virginia up towards washington county maryland and areas back to the west could see some snow but that's really because of the ice now. this would not be a big snow event for the areas in the pink here -- rather the purple just west of i-95 we still have that advisory through noon. heavy rain is going on right now. tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. notice the rain in the d.c. area is changing back to snow fredericks town martinsburg. we may still see some showers activity yes, even snow showers in the d.c. metro area but i'm not anticipating any more accumulating snowfall from this. now as we move through the day on sunday this is a different

story here. cloud cover early but not a bad sunday. here comes the rain and the snow early with our next clipper system. snow to the north. then watch what happens monday morning, critical time 6:00 7:00 8:00 is when the heaviest snow comes down. yes i'm predicting we'll see some schools cancel as a result of this snow on monday. right now some areas could easily see two to four inches maybe a little bit more than that. this will be one to watch for sure over the weekend. chuck bell will be in early tomorrow morning, amelia segal, i may be in here sunday night because we've got that snow coming in. high temperature only around 36. just plain cold next week hard to get out of the low 30s. >> it will be trouble at the grocery store this weekend, isn't it? >> i went yesterday. >> you knew what was coming. still ahead, the former first overall pick alex ovechkin with a long night at the

a big effort is in the works to feed the hungry in fairfax county. it's called stuff the bus. the campaign is a partnership between the government local grocery stores and some nonprofits. its aim is to restock the shelves at local food pantries. tomorrow the bus will be in mclean at the giant on chambers road and in alexandria at the shoppers food warehouse. a bus will be at different location every saturday through presidents day. >> take it right to the grocery store.
