we're staying on top of the road conditions. we'll let you know the latest closures and delays too. good morning it's tuesday, 2015. if you work for the federal government you can sleep in today. we learned less than an hour ago that federal agencies in the d.c. region are opening two hours late today. you can also use unscheduled leave or tellwork. >> in virginia several schools are closed. prince william closed. spotslvania county is closed. page county is closed. let's get to storm team 4 meteorologist. goomorning. the snow still coming down across northern virginia the district and marylan coming from the north. right now you see the brighter whiter colors we're getting bands of heavier snow. that's in howard county. there's another band here jus of the pan handle of a into loudoun county.

another one that stretches down to near fredericksburg. these could be putting down a quick half inch to an inch. closer to the metro area there's that other brand of prince george's county. that's lighter snow. a few lingering flurries around the immediate washington area. we've had anywhere from 1 to 3 inches the immediate metro area. fairfax city had 4.3 inches. ash burn 2.4 inches and point of rocks near the loudoun and frederick county line 3.5 inches. 3.5 fell in the pan handle of west virginia. the highest total was a little over 6 inches in western washington county. drive time this morning watch out for snowy patches on the road with lingering flurries for the morning commute staying below freeze. side streak -- streets and sidewalks will be treacherous. r the afternoon the sun breaks out and pavement drying. temperatures getting above freezing. shou make it to the upper 30s.

the big plunge overnight. a lohour-by-hour forecast. th coming up at 4:41. chuck bes joining us live with the storm team 4 x 4. where are you now? >>morning, tom. we're on 301 southbound south of downtown waldorf in charles county past the saint charles town center. and boy, i'll tell you we took 201 down south through prince george's county. that road was in pretty good shape. this one 301 it's a little bit farther to the east where the heavier snow band is we noticed a noticeable change as far as the amount of snow on the road. 301 southbound very crispy and crunchy from snow pack on the road this morning. they have been getting out and putting treat on it. we've seen a couple of snowplows as well. 301 central and southern part of charles county on the slowey and

slushy road. if you see one on the way out and about let me know. we would love to put the snow covered roads on tv and show folks where the travel conditions a the toughest. so far the worst we've seen is 301 south of waldorf. we'll go southbound and ovee 5 and see how it's faring. it's a little bit more snow to the east now. for now a check with melissa. 270 southbound old hundred road here. we have a tracker trailer across the entire section. you're getting pushed off under 109. don't get on 270 right now. you'll have to take 355 to avoid that. also here in prince george's route 1 an overturned vehicle at the intersection. no injuries though. that's going to be out of the way here hopefully soon. 95 in maryland no problems. same thing as you're looking at

piled up in the left-hand side of the lane. the plow had the plow down and shoved it out of the way. and you can see by the wet conditions here they have obviously done a lot of treating of the roadways and the salt is doing the job. this road is in condition. we traveled on kennel worth avenue. similar conditions there. wet pavement. however, we are below freezing. anything that hasn't been treated it will be frozen. also, areas like sidewalks and parking lots colting -- coating of snow. a liy in those areas. your neighborhood that will likely be the case as well. they're focussing on the major roads before they get to the neighborhood. youe leaving the house this mot easy leaving your door getting out of your driveway. that might be one of your biggest challenges is getting out of the neighborhood. many of the major roads at this point are just wet. reporting live megan mcgrath. jefferson public schools are

welcome back at 4:40. today is a weather alert today. storm team 4 radar shows a line are the snow is falling in part of our region. new closing and delays. berkeley county grant county west virginia schools are closed. and falls church city p a two hour delay today. coming up in a few minutes meteorologist will have the hour by hour forecast. right now a blizzard is hampering the boston area. this is a the current conditions 20 minutes outside the city. take a look at that. that's heavy snow falling there. you can see the area is expected to get at least 2 to 3 feet of

snow throughout the day. and take a look at the video from prelimma at least 6 inches fell. bringing winds of 50 miles per hour. you can see the winds blowing there. officials anticipating wide spread pow flooding along the coast. the governor is urging people to stay home today. the storm shut down the city that never sleeps. the new york city subway and bus system closed at 11:00 last night. no word when it might reopen. new jersey new york and connecticut under states of emergency as nearly 30 inches of snow is expected to fall today. we say that parts of the northeast are used to the weather but this is a serious issue. especially when you're considering pow outages. you want the emergency crews to be able to do their work that's why they have taken the precautions ahead of the storm. >> they of snow but you amplify it with the blizzard conditions and the differen there. here we're starting to see things wind down a little bit. >> yeah. we have some snow. no blizzard here. we're getting snow showers and

breaking news this morning i-270 shut down near old hundred road. a tractor trailer accident is blocking the lanes. we'll let you know what is going on in we're staying on top of the winter weather. you see where snow is on the radar. we're keeping a close eye on the road conditions in the storm team 4 x 4. we'll bring you any troubled spots as we see them. tom is here with the weather alert. we still have snow falling throughout much of the region this morning. the snow is coming down mostly light snow where you see the patches the darker gray.e brighter white is getting bands of snow. loudoun county and another one

here. southern stafford county and it stretches down into spotslvania and culpepper. it will put down a quick inch. the brightest band or the heaviestw is along route 17 and 29 to culpepper it could be getting pretty slick because our temperatures are bel freezing. we'll have the sub freezing temperatures all morning long as these snow showers and snow bands do come through from time to time. and we'll have snow covered roads especially side streets and rural roads. a photoh i took one of the rural roads in montgomery county. it's coming up. as long as we get through the morning we'll be okay by the afternoon thank y for that. a storm that continues to bring heavy snow in the northeast is impacting us this morning. news 4 richard jordan is live in fairfax station with more. >> good morning.

>> good morning. a lot of major roads throughout northern virginia are looking pretty good this morning. v-dot got ahead of things. the streets are wet but we're not seeing any snow falling down. however, you can see the snow was here. take a look at parking lot. it is completely iced over. you can tell it's been treated. there are piles of snow that have been push aufd to the sides there. very dangerous when you talk about the side streets. those parking lots that haven't been treated. if you are heading out you're going to grab a cup of coffee before you head to work be careful as you get out of your car. it is icy. we're seeing a lot of salt trucks and plows chris crossing acro area. their focus is the major roads and to give them credit, the ma roetdsads are looking really good. it's the side streets, the parking lot, the untreated surfaces that are dicey this morning. a few flakes are starting to come down now. we could see things get a little

it was going to go on overnight. it's snowing here. we have a weather alert day which means frupdates. looking at radar every few minutes. because it is changing minute by minute. you can see the brighter white colors on the radar. that's where the snow is coming down a little bit harder now. it is coming down a little bit harder around fredericksburg west of there and southwest to culpepper. thers anoth band of some light 20 moderate snow. pan handle of west virginia stretches down to loudoun county. a few flurries. a little bit of light snow in fairfax county. we had the one band of moderate snow go across prince george's county. that's moving. now we did get about a half inch to inch of snow from that. quickly putting that down to a half inch or so. southern maryland but north and west where we had the higher amount of snow. 4.3 inches in fairfax city.

3.8 inches in germantown. about 3.5 around martins burg. 6 inches in western washington co snorn we might get an additional inch this morning. we have the winter weather advisory in effect. all the counties in color until 10:00 . additional inch between now and around 8:00. it's cause slick conditions. watch out. many roads are snow covered. the timing on lingering snow here this is as of 8:00 or so this m. l lingering snow showers east and south of washington. by 10:00 it's just about all done. after that cloud cover begins to break up by noontime. sunshine breaks out during the afternoon hours. clear tonight and very cold. and during the afternoon hours we'll get above freezing.

problems at all. now a big look at the beltway. a little bit slow outbound. a little bit of volume. it is slick where it looks wet. be careful this morning and the beltway at kennel worth no problems there. back in ten minutes with more on the 270 being shut down there. thank you. it is now 4:55. the virginia senate is steps to ease gun control in the commonwealth. lawmakers on a gop senate panel approved bills aimed at loosening restrictions on gun owners yesterday. they voted against gun control measures. those proposals include limited handgun purchases to one a month and closing a loophole that allows sales by private sellers without a criminal background check. school children in virginia could be taking fewer standards of learning tests in the future. sol tests. the senate committee voted to reduce the number of sol tests to the minimum required by federal law within three years. that would bring the number of

tests requiredto 14. such tests use memoryization and stifled creativity. the state teachers group supports the reduction. into the news room prince george's county schools are closed and montgomery county schools are closed. prince gd mony schools closed. you may face higher electric ville you live in virginia. they be able to raise the bills if they pass the bill before the senate labor. it would require it to maintain the base rate for eight years but able to increase fuel surcharges in riders added to the bills. it makes up over half of a customer's bill. but today you can weigh in on a new memorial coming to d.c. it will honor the founding of the peace corps.. the national park service plans to build it blocks from the
