>> unlike yesterday morning when we were above freezing, this b freezing temperaturest is making all the difference. that's why so many schools are closing because of overnight snow accumulating on area roads and any untreated surface. right now storm team 4 radar is showing continuing snow bands coming in from the peripheral outer fringes of the blizzard hitting new england. it's affecting us this far away. we're getting scattered snow bands. howard county. there's a bigger one coming out of the pan hane o west vi into loudoun county. that's moving into prince i and clarke and warren. farther to the south, there's another bigger area that is now coming out of culpepper county into orange and into stafford. there's one bright band of some heavy sn in southern charles county. these are going to be puttio inches of on top of what has already fallen. temperatures in the upper 20s to near 30s. it is sticking.

welcome back it's 6:14. right now tracking treacherous conditions for the roads for you as winter weather brings more snow to the d.c. area . our crews are spread out this morning tracking the potential trouble spots you'll encounter as you head out the door. storm team 4 meteorologist is here with a closer look at how much snow is falling now. tom? >> already we've had overnight 1 to 2 in some places 3 inches on top of what fell yesterday. itmorning. unlike yesterday morning we were

above freezing now it's in the 20s near 30s. the snow bands continuing to track to the south and east anacross northern virginia over the next several hours. and you can see these brighter bands here in the lighter colors that's where the snow is m coing down. a of west virginia to loudoun county to prince william. there's another band east of washington coming out of howard county. a larger area of some light to moderate snow from culpepper connecticut to orange. that's moving toward king george's as well. we'll have these with us for another few hours putting down an additional 1 to 2 inches on top of what has fallen since yesterday. for. for those about to head out, let's get a look at the roads now. chuck bell is live near joint andrews. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. route 5 all wait from huesville

see with the bubbling water is? there's a large sink hole that formed because the broken water main. if you look to the left that's a back portion of a car. we're looking a the passenger side rear taillight. that's about all you can see. that and a little bit of the license plate. the rest of the car is down in that hole. and you can see another car there just to the right of it. its nose is at the i think edge of this deep sink hole. apparently the folks that live along the street there on the other side of the sidewalk they did have water enter their homes. bringing their belongings out early this morning. a huge mess here. a water main break. this it going to be with us for awhile. it also affecting decatur street as well as kenl worth ue have roads closed off. bee of the frigid temperatures a the water is

snow that came down late last night overnight. and a few light flurries we've been seeing. they're pushing the snow getting it out of the way so people can move around pretty freo have a bobcat that is doing a little of the heavy lifting over there as well. so we have these crews out here working on the side streets, working on the parking lots. trying to clear off the sidewalks as well. then we have about 1500 crews crossing across northern virginia this morning. the bn getting the main roads, the big thorough fairs including route 123 which is there. that'sk pretty great now. traffic is moving without any issues. beca school has bn delayed or closed and people are moving a little slower than they typically do on a tuesday morning. we're not seeing a the lot of heavy traffic. so that is definitely helping the road crews make sure everything stays clear. theye seeing a few light

the gurgling water we have another pretty precariously perched car. across the street there on the e sidewalk we have a family here in the home. they hav back and forth to their cars carrying at times large bags filled with possession walking through the frigid water. apparently they had flooding inside and they're trying to salvage what they can. get it out of the water that is now inside their home. and just a bad situation for the folks here. we have road closures all around the area edmondston. even decatur has been closed for a section. this will be with us for some it doesn't sound like there were any injuries.u can see they're carry boy has been carried out. they're walking through this frigid water just a bad

and traffic at the 1s. thank you. breaking news right now out. a car swallow badeed by a sink hole. >> reporter: we're getting more informatn how it went down. you can see the car there or what is left of it or what we can see of it. the rest down in the sink hole that was created when a water main broke on the side of the street. apparently there were a number of people inside that car when it happened. we're told there were a couple s and their mom were in the car. they were trying to leave the area following the water main break when suddenly the sink hole just gobbled up their car. the neighbor said that thank goodness they had not yet put on the seat belts. they were able to pretty quickly jump out of the car. we're told that all of them are okay. but obviously a very dangerous situation. water is very very frigid. we also have some flooding to at least one house.

we're told that their basement is completely filled with water. we have been watching them this morning coming in and out of their home with bags of their possessis trying to salvage what they can. talked to a gentleman earlier this morning and he kind of described what ha and said that thank goodness everybody is okay. >> so everybody is okdama a lot of damage. >> reporte so we have aurm in of streets that are closed off in the area. ed mondston. a pretty touch and go situation for awhile. we're told the family was able to get out and they're going to be okay. now with more on traffic. we go to melissa. > amazing they were able to get out. alternate in that area because of the closures going to be baltimore avee route 1. looking pretty good. a couple of travel times this morning. 270 south from germantown to the beltway 17 minutes.

at jfk several hundred people did spend the night after they were apparently stuck on the tarmac the flight unable to leave to europe. they came back to the terminal and spent the night. some of them rather upset, we're told. today in new york city or nation we've got now 4500 flight cancellations. every flight in and out of new yoy in and out of boston in and out of philly cancelled today. and tomorw we' likely to see them starting to pick up again as they get their planes back into p blizzard the airlines try move the planes out of the blizzard's path. we have no planes on the ramp heo passe here in new yo city. amtrak suspending all operations north of new york city into boston. south of new york city to d.c. we have limited service today in areas. i have to tell you, there's likely to be you know the likely to have a lot of questions about why they shut
