powerful winter storm. >> and you'll notice a crass tick difference as drastic difference outside. temperatures have plunged. and with strong wind gusts, it will feel like temperatures are in the teens. >> they are brutal. this morning the winds gusting around 20 miles per hour. there is the sky over washington now. we're clear, but a blustery frigid morning. and blustery afternoon, too. winds will still be gusting through much of the day. a then a wintry mix is looking a little more likely for late on thursday. look at these windchills closer to washington now, gaithersburg down to just six. fairfax county near 10 degrees. windchills in prince george's county only around 10. and near the bay, windchill ps are in the mid teens. the feels like temperature by 8:00 this morning will still be just near 10 to low teens. and then the windchills will be a little more tolerable by

morning. >> reporter: airports especially the airports in the northeast today will be busy. but it will not be a pleasant experience for travelers. already seeing several cancellations. several flights also delayed. and these are to the destinations that you'd likely expect. still trouble in new york. several flights that were supposed to come in from laguardia today have already been canceled here at reagan. that airport had operations running yesterday, but it will take a while for things to get up to speed. hartford connecticut, newark, new jersey also seeing cancellations today. and perhaps the biggest trouble spot across the country is boston's logan airport. that airport got almost two feet of snow. it is still digging out. flights will get out at some point today. but not every flight out of boston or heading to boston will get in especially not on time. we only have one flight here at reagan from boston that is still on schedule this morning. so you'll definitely want to check out if you're flying to

any of those cities in the northeast. part of the problem is that most of the major airlines got their planes out of dodge ahead of the storm. they got out of that storm zone. you now they have to get the planes back in and they also have to get the flight crews back. reporting live this morning, richard jordan news 4. it should be easier to take a train along the northeast corridor today. amtrak says it is restoring normal service between d.c. and new york city. they're still on a modified schedule for trains continuing on to boston and throughout new england. and cold weather continues to hit our area. homeless shelters are filling up. today d.c. will start its annual point in time count of the homeless population. more than 1100 homeless children are living with their families in d.c. shelters. 1400 single men and women are also living in city shelters. earlier this month, we told you that d.c. general is at capacity right now. the city is leasing hundreds of hotel rooms to handle the overflow. today a meeting to discuss

tighter controls at montgomery county airport. and there could be big changes on the way. neighbors are asking for the number of flights in and out of the airport to be reduced. six were killed in december when a plane crashed in to a gaithersburg neighborhood. county says it's considering reducing the number of flights and changing the operation times at the airport. 90% of the flights that come in and out of the airport are training flights. today's meeting starts at 4:00 at the montgomery county council building. also today, a man accused of killing his ex-wife's new husband will be in court. he's facing a bond hearing today. loudoun county detectives say he killed cory madison earlier this month. they had been married just three months when this happened. you can go fund me page for the family right now. there is a link online. search madison on nbcwashington.com nbcwashington.com. there are questions about the future of joshua starr. the "washington post" reports th board of education members have lost confidence in

the "washington post" first reported the problem. mayor bowser says some of the cameras were not installed on time and many batteries were not replaced. a police spokesperson says cold weather in 014 was a factor in not being able to change the battery. former mayor gray and cathy lanier said last year a change in driver behavior also led to the drop if speedn speed camera revenue. is car is now out of a huge sinkhole but still more work to do. it took a crepeane to get the car out. crews are waiting on asphalt to cover up the sinkhole after they fixed the main. a lot of people are cleaning out flooded basements in that area today. wssc says the sinkhole is no longer dangerous. coming up on 6:11. time for weather and traffic on the 1s. >> we're talking about 25 degrees and that's the warm spot. feels a lot colder with the

she ran over my leg first. basically pushed them down second time she ran them over and pushed me away. >> the man you just heard describing what he says was a hit and run in arlington. he says a woman scraped the car and then rab over both he and his friend and drove off. police today are searching for the suspect this morning. a woman driving a toyota suv. they say the hit and run happened at an auto light on columbia pike. that lot is at the back of the building it also houses a barber shop. it of course was filled with people. some used their phones to record the incident and then showed those videos to detectives. police are searching for a suspect -- actually let's tell but a major break in a hit and run months after the crime

happened. police arrested edna browne. browne hit a woman on the reston parkway back in november. she was thrown several feet and the driver never stopped. police tracked browne down at his job. they seized his car and plan to use it as evidence. 6:17 now. d.c. police are moving forward with brabtsing a handful of people permits to carry concealed firearms in public. eight people have been given permits since the department started accepting applications back in october. that's according to the "washington post". police say they denied permits to 11 applicants. in all of 66 people applied. 34 residents and 32 nonresidents. most of those cases are still pending. today u.s. park police will swear in a new chief, robert maclean. he will manage more than 700 employees and a budget of more than $100 million. he will be swofrnrn in at 10:00 this morning. we're working to learn the name of the man who crashed his

indonesian military is no longer taking part in the search for the victims of airasia flight. 92 bodies are still missing. the military pulled out after failed attempts to raise the main body of the plane. the plane's black box has been found. a new report says washington suburban sanitary commission is behind schedule on a project to fix hundreds of miles of sewer lines in maryland. the epa says the lines have linked millions of gallons of raw sewage in extremes and river in streams and rivers. the wssc is asking for an extension because delays in permits caused it to fall behind. girls who drink sugary drinks tend to start puberty sooner than girls who don't. researchers wanted to find a link between drinks and puberty as it can be linked to breast cancer later in life.

taking response for an attack at the corinthia hotel. they pledged its allegiance to isis. david berry who worked for a fredericksburg security firm was killed in that attack. the company coo confirmed berry's death. they issued this statement saying our company mourns this extraordinary loss with his family and friends. students at a prince george's county high school returned to class today their first day back after one of their classmates allegedly shot two others and himself this weekend. police say this happened when the teens got into an argument over video games at the alleged shooter's home in clinton. that was on sunday. 16-year-old dunmore faces attempted murder. he was reeseloosedeased from the hospital yesterday. one remains in critical condition. all three attended frederick douglas high school and are on the football team. counselors will be there for the classmates today. a d.c. public charter school

today northern virginia man accused of killing his ex-wife's husband will be in court. there is a bond hearing today. detectives say he broke into cory madison's home in ashburn and killed him earlier this month. cory and denise had been married for just three months. a baby is back safe with her mother this morning. police say the five month old girl was taken at gunpoint last night by her father in poolesville. police are still trying to decide charges for deare denny. they say he drove a rental car to the mother's home and assaulted her before taking his daughter. denny turned himself in late last night to police in prince george's county. the baby was not the harmed. just into the live desk, a first look at that twitter account where all the threats against measureamerican airlines have been coming from. we have a screen shot of the twitter account before they suspended the account. yesterday alone, four threats
