d.c. water crews worked into the evening trying to repair a broken water service line under the streets of connecticut avenue and r street northwest. some businesses chose to close early rather than risk being caught without water. among them popular italian restaurants. by 8:00 p.m. not being used due to the cold weather. >>. >> each one is expected in the situation and people are making plans and they say, by the way -- >> restaurant manager tells news4 this is not the first time this has happened. >> especially if this happened a year ago, you know i mean same location and same everything.

skies. it will bring a mixture of rain and snow that could affect your afternoon rush tomorrow. we'll talk about that and the weather for super bowl sunday. >> thanks, doug. fire investigators say that a christmas tree helped fuel the flames of a massive fire at a mansion in annapolis a few days ago. tonight, investigators say without a doubt sprinklers would have made a difference. our darcy spencer reports that sprinklers may be required to be put in new homes. >> reporter: they could opt out of the lay requiring sprinklers in new homes. that is about to change. but tonight, the state fire marshal told me he's concerned that some lawmakers may try to keep that exemption. >> reporter: would a sprinkler

system have prevented the death of those in this water front mansion? >> without a doubt. >> reporter: starting in june all new homes in maryland will be required to have sprinkler systems but the fire marshal says some lawmakers are considering repealing the law because it will increase the cost to home buyers. >> we're hoping that they don't. we're hoping that this case shows the importance. >> reporter: investigators learned that a fire started at an outlet that was powering 15,000 lights on a 15-foot christmas tree. the tree had been up for 60 days and it was dry. they had no time to get out. >> christmas trees, when they are dry, they burn quickly. >> reporter: they will recreate the fire using a tree like the one in the mansion as they continue to investigate how the

fire ignited and why it was a virtual inferno by the time firefighters got there. >> maybe not keep the tree up as long or that type of thing. >> reporter: tonight i reached out to a maryland lawmaker who in the past has expressed concern about mandating sprinkler systems in home because of the affordability, that it could increase the cost of homes to people who can least afford them. i did not receive a call back or answer to my e-mail. reporting live from anne arundel county darcy spencer, news4. >> and the boone pyle family released a statement. for a week. we have just learned that one of the hostages killed in a standoff in australia last month was killed by bullets fired by the police. it happened at a chocolate cafe in sydney australia. a ricochetting bullet hit katrina dawson and was killed. that prompted a police raid at the cafe. 16 other hostages were not injured. and tonight, isis militants may have used a japanese hostage to set a new dead line for a prisoner swap. chris lawrence is at our live desk with more. chris? >> doreen they were to start executing prisoners tonight but this message now says sundown thursday. it was posted on a forum that they use. we can't confirm its

d.c. official has been ruled competent to stand trial. he's facing a charge of first-degree murder. police say he followed carolyn cross to her apartment in alexandria and beat her with a wrench. it happened last year. they say that he cut his own wrists and then called 911. his lawyers asked for a mental competency evaluation but a report just filed finds him competent to stand trial. that's set for april. a victim's plea for witnesses to record a car running him down as landed this woman in jail. alexandra mendez can be seen hitting several cars in the mk auto lot in arlington last night. when the owner of the lot tried to keep her from leaving, mendez hit both men with her suv, backing over one of them a second time and then dragging him down the road. >> she didn't even want to stop. she just kept going and she

tomorrow. storm cities testimony coming our way, not so fast. right now, clear skies will allow us to cool and then we'll watch that storm. this storm is another clipper system. most of it though, will stay well to the north. and when that happens, we don't see much moisture from the systems and that's going to be the case this time. look at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. not much going on. a few clouds coming on in and they will lower and then we'll see the rain moving in. rain back to the west. winchester back towards the 3:00 hour in and around the d.c. metro area coinciding with rush hour unfortunately. but it's not a lot. we'll see some rain and snow in montgomery towards federick. i'm not anticipating any problems. again, here 3:00 here 5:00 and then out of here by 7:00 and 8:00. that's how fast it's going to move. any showers could develop for about a 20-minute period. that's it. so tomorrow morning, dry roads, 24 degrees. no problem as far as driving is

troy causes more chaos. he goes down and yet another fight breaks out. it's the fifth fight of the game. the caps walk away with a shutout victory over the pittsburgh penguins 4-0. >> the fans loved it! and tonight john is running the show. but another slow start ails the wiz kid. there is a misshot and, boom eight points in the first quarter. later on phoenix missing the shot. eric is going the other way and it's sloppy but he gets a three. easy when you don't defend them.

the suns lead it 49-31. down in arizona, we're talking about practice. super bowl practice. both teams finally hitting the practice field. tom brady's ankle injury it's listed anyway he admitted to having a cold but he participated fully today. richard sherman had his arm wrapped but didn't look affected by his extended arm ten days ago. guess what i love this story. sherman had his first son, his first child due any day. now, the doctor says that he's assuring him it's not going to be sunday right? but what if?
