be lifesavers. firefighters say it's not just the smoke detector but that carbon monoxide detector. >> you have to make sure they're always working. stay with us. you "news 4 today" continues right now at 5:00 a.m.. not a lot of snow but still a messy start. we're watching the roads for you and we'll tell you how much rain to expect as you head out the door. and it is the morning after the super bowl. we're getting overnight reaction from last night's thrilling and controversial ending. controversial is one word. i can think of a few others. >> a lot of people have choice words on that. >> good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. we dodged a major snowstorm. it's still causing problems for millions of people right now in other parts of the country. let's take another look at the radar here. you can see mostly rain in our region, but farther north, that's where we're seeing the snow. check out this video from cleveland.

a lot of snow in cleveland, ohio. and that snow moved into the northeast overnight and it's still digging out from a blizzard. tom kierein here now with a look at you how the system is impacting us. >> close call. we were on the southern side of that storm, the warmer side. so we got mostly rain after a little bit of snow fell in parts of loudoun thornnorthern montgomery. now just light rain. the area in the green, that is just some very light rain that is falling. a few sprinkles northern suburbs and the eastern suburbs. a few sprinkles now just passing south of us stafford and spotsylvania into charles county. and we have another round of maybe a little more light rain coming through later this morning. right now all above freezing mid to upper 30s metro area. some mild air staying to our south today. in the mountain low to mid-40s there. but strong gusty winds will bring in chillier air as we get into the afternoon. watch out this area in blue,

though. there might be a few slushy spots from some of that snow existing in northern montgomery, northern loudoun, points north. an inch or two fell near the pennsylvania border last night. and there are strong gusty winds to 50 miles per hour. all these areas in tan, including northern virginia, the district and most of maryland. that will be noon to midnight today. next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 5:11 a look at when we'll see the strongest winds moving on through hour by hour. melissa, how are the roads? >> thumbs up right now. no major issues. a live look 270 at germantown road 118 everybody headed south, no problems headed north. you're looking good, as well. 66 at fairfax county parkway, all these folks headed inbound and again no issues there will this morning and no road work which of course is great. 95 in virginia no problems there. you're at 64 miles per hour. woodrow wilson bridge into maryland virginia, no issues. and looking quite good.

a little to the north here 95 into and out of town and bw parkway, also moving along quite nicely. we did have that earlier crash 95 at route 198, that has been out of the way for some time now. i'm back in ten minutes with more information on an accident i'm just hearing about on 395 at duke. 5:03. super bowl 49 rpxlix is in the books with huge reaction to the end of the game. >> pass is intercepted at the goal line! >> i still can't believe it. a surprise interception. surprise on say the least. to finish the seahawks hopes for a repeat championship this year. after the game seahawks head coach pete carroll took the blame for the last minute call to throw not run the ball. it was a half a yard. but he said he'd do it again. on facebook and twitter many of you are calling that decision

about the game on twitter and the nbc washington facebook page. five after the hour. it is a fresh start for hundreds of workers today at the washington navy yard. they're going back to work this building 197. 12 people died inside that building at a mass shooting in september 2013. megan mcgrath live outside the navy yard with more on the new name and the new layout inside building 197. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. certainly lots of changes have been made here. 400 employees will be returning to the building today and the first person to actually return to work will be vice admiral william hitright. and he's hopeful the changes that have been made will allow people too once again feel safe and comfortable inside the building. now, building 197 is getting a new name. it's now going to go by the humphreys building named after joshua humphreys who designed the navy's first frigates.

there is a new color scheme, new cafeteria, and there is also an area honoring the 12 people who were killed here. the renovation took a year and a half to complete and the vice admiral says it's going to be good to have every back in one central location. >> being in several buildings spread out across washington just makes the teamwork and makes the work harder. and so we've been a little less efficient than we would be if we're all together. so i'm really looking forward to being back in 197 all together. >> reporter: and extra security has been added during the move and there will also be counselors on happened to talk to anyone who is having anxiety about returning to the building. megan mcgrath, news 4. 5:06 now. former nba player greg anthony will head to work. the basketball analyst is facing charges for allegedly solicit being a prostitute inside the double tree hotel in northwest

washington. according to police report anthony used a computer to find a prostitute and was caught in an undercover police race. after his arrest last month, anthony was suspended indefinitely by cbs. a national star player is out of jail, but he's headed back in a few days. jayson werth turned himself in friday to serve part of a five day jail sentence. werth pled guilty to reckless driving. he was pulled over in july after driving his porsche 105 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone. that was in fairfax county. werth was sentenced to 180 days in jail but 170 of those were suspended. he will serve the rest on weekends only so he can still go to physical therapy. starting today students at the university of virginia came k. call a security guard to walk them home on campus or wait with them at a bus stop. they hired a firm calmed g4s to

step up security. the university calls the unarmed security guards ambassadors. the extra security will patrol popular areas near greek houses and off campus apartments. an important reminder if you have an expiring driver's license in virginia. why you may have a little bit longer to get that renewed. plus the big impact the latest snowstorm could have on your travel plans. roads mostly just wet right now. it could get windy later on. tom tells us when the wind moves in.

you have a little more time now to renew your expiring driver's ryelicense and car registration. there was a computer system outage that forced them to close the offices on reopened. so you now have until february 7 to renew without a penalty. the dmv says it told police about that extension. and we're talking about the weather. we were sxenlgting a little bit of snow and we did get snow in some parts of you'reour area. >> still waiting for everything to roll out of here right, tom? >> northern suburbs did get

about half an inch. now scattered light rain around the metro area. just mainly to the north those patches of green. those will continue to track to the north and east. a few sprinkles to our south, as hill under a little bit of fog, a little light rain back again around 8 ox8. strongest gusts around noon. peak gusts of around 50 miles per hour between to 6:00. we'll be hovering in the low 40s. look at our next chance for wintry mix coming up at 5:21. brand new crash 395 just north of duke. it is off to the shoulder you can see. but you still a warning if you're headed out anytime soon. you will see that police response and tow on the way. taking a look at 66 and 95 for problems there as you're looking at those two roadways. beltway at new hampshire, looking good as well. everything moving quite nicely

welcome back. it is 37 degrees outside of our studios right now in northwest washington. check out the storm team 4 radar. this weather system is moving out of our area for now but not after leaving some rain, snow and sleet in parts of our area. chuck bell is checking the roads for you in the 4 x 4. how is it looking? >> reporter: good morning. here in germantown, the main

roads are just fine. temperature 34 freedegrees. so not a whole lot of an icing threat but there are areas of slushiness on the sides of the roads. definitely once you're back in the quieter neighborhoods, even though the travel lanes are okay the sides of the roads and some sidewalks are just a little bit on the slushy side. but on the whole, this will be a relatively easy ride into work and school first thing this morning as again all the main roads are absolutely fine. we'll be back in 30 more minutes. if you have a slushy road in your neighborhood let me know at dhuk @chuckbell4. i'm angie goff at the live desk. right now the northeast is getting ready to wake up to sleet and blizzard conditions. they are expecting up to another foot of snow after the massive storm that just tore through the midwest. it already killed two people and closed down parts of a major

interstate. thousands of flights have been canceled, many schools are closed today. new york mayor de blasio saying a lot of the bad weather will happen in the early morning hours. >> angie goff from the live desk. thank you. 5:18. we're keeping an eye on flights and the rails that could feel the impact from the weather. we just checked with flightaware.com. more than 2300 flights have been canceled this morning. that is up from just 30 minutes ago. in our reenlgen on, reagan national has 54 canceled bwi 32 actualdulles has 20. amtrak says it's been preparing for the winter storm along the northeast corridor. it is planning to run normal service. however, some acela express and northeast regional service will be modified. amtrak says it has several crews on standby between new york and boston just in case there are any problems. we're working on find out

more about the condition of two ped pds who were hit on the bw parkway near route 198 last night. at last check police told us a man and woman are in very serious condition. the circumstances surrounding this accident are still under investigation. today police are twrirying to figure out why a woman stabbed herself inside a safeway. it was about 6:30 last night. the woman's condition sun knownis unknown. montgomery county police took away a large suitcase and bag of evidence from that store. ♪ a lot of people on twitter and facebook are says his city he will missy elliott stole show. katy perry was out there on that golden tiger. >> that was just weird.

>> 12 minute performance full of visual effects. there she is with lenny krafvitz. and her hit song i kissed a girl. the nfl is auctioning all of the guitars from the show to benefit break the cycle, a nonprofit aimed at preventing abuse in young relationships. i thought she did a great job. very entertaining. today is ground hog day, february 2. we'll find out if punxsutawney phil will see his shadow. can we bribe him? this is video from last year. traditionally if the groundhog sees hisshadow it means six more weeks of winter. if he does not, that is a sign of an early spring. we have to bribe the meteorologists. closer to home groundhog will make his prediction. the party starts at 7:30 this morning at dupont circle.

you can check out live being a cardian music. poll came dancing. where is chuck bell? polka, polka, polka. and a puppet show. fun for even. >> and we did just hear howard county schools on a two hour delay today. 5:21. that's because of the weather we're experiencing as we take a live look outside. 38 degrees outside our studios. a mild start to our day. good morning. starting off just a little bit of light rain here in the in either metro area. howard still has some lingering slush from about a half inch of sleet and snow that fell there yesterday. and other areas if northern montgomery county that as well as up into frederick county. but for the most part just wet this morning as we're getting just a little bit of light rain eastern northern suburbs and off to our west. there are showers here in west virginia.

this will be the last of it but it will take a few more hours before it does arrive here. right now a little bit wet here this area in green from charles county all across prince george's county, northern anne arundel into howard county getting just a few scattered sprinkles there of light rain. all the pavement is wet this morning, so watch out, it will be slick because of wet pavement. items all above freezing. shenandoah valley all the way to the bay. mid and upper 30s. southern maryland parts of the eastern shore near 50 degrees. out of the mountains, many locations there low and mid-40s. we're on the warm side of that storm. this is what a rural road looks like here in northern montgomery county. i took this picture about 2:00 this morning. you can see a little bit of slush there. wet pavement for the morning commute. upper 30s. drive time forecast for the afternoon, wind blown roads drying out. temperatures in the low 40s. and we'll have those winds gusting maybe to 50 miles per hour by later this afternoon. might even have a few scattered power outages. make sure your cell phone is fully charged. getting cold tomorrow morning,

all the way done wahe way down to around 20 degrees. during the day tuesday, above freezing. mid and upper 30s. partly cloudy. and then increasing clouds wednesday, but milder. upper 40s. wednesday night might get a little bit of light rain and then we dry out thursday morning, some sunshine. and then clouding up in the afternoon. might get a little bit of a wintry mix. light mix of maybe a little snow and sleet on thursday afternoon. we'll be hovering right a little bit above freezing. so much of that may be plelting on roads. after that storm team 4 seven day outlook, cold day on friday with highs only near freezing. then a bit milder over the weekend on saturday should make it into the mid-40s. another chance a little bit of a wintry mix maybe sunday afternoon. low 40s. next weather and traffic on the 1s your bus stop forecast, back to work and school on this monday. brand new crash, 70 east report of a crash at 27 there in mt. airy in the right side of the roadway. so trying to get more

information on that for you and we'll of course tweet about it. 395 north of duke street we had the crash off to the right side but that is now out of the way. and 270 at montrose road moving right along. 66 here 95 in virginianice. beltway at 50 here in maryland is rolling along nicely as well. i'm back in ten minutes weather and traffic always on the 1s. i'll have a live look at 95 in maryland. 5:4. nurses across the country are fighting for new recommendations to combat fatigue. american nurses association says it's not unheard of for a nurse to work a shift of more than 12 hours. that fatigue could lead to medical mistakes. the group wants employers to limit shifts to 12 hours or less. eliminate mandatory overtime and keep consecutive night shifts to a minimum for nurses working both days and nights. a new study in news 4 your health this morning. we learn the numbers overnight that say your kids may be eating

too much salt and sugar. researchers at the cdc say that nearly 8 out of 10 young children eat more than the daily recommended dose of salt each day. seven out of ten meals for toddlers have too much salt. that's according to the study, as well. it also says that one out of three of those dinners has added sugar which adds calories without any benefit to your kids' health. the study includes recommendations that you can check for. for salt and sodium stay away from foods that have more than 210 milligrams in a serving. sugar should not be making up more than about a third of the calories in any meal. >> nice job on the smart screen. if you're trying to lose some weight, you might want to try friending people on weight loss social networks. a new study shows dieters who

use social media have more success. this comes from calorie king.com. they found that users with more than ten friends on that site loss more than 8% of their body fat over six months. self-monitoring did help but still, social media was the largest contributeorcontributor. it is time to reboot your resolutions. if you you set a new year's resolution this year this is about the time you may be losing motivation maybe started cheating on your diet, you didn't make it to the gym this weekend at all perhaps. throughout the day here, we'll share continues on how to stay strong and motivated as well as a series of stories to inspire you you to make positive changes, not drastic ones. just a few changes that will improve your health and your whole life overall. baby steps. we're not saying you have to completely all of a sudden go to the gym six days a week if you haven't gone all year. >> and i can still have the pork chops. >> you can still have the pork chops. not every day, though. >> some good advice.

good morning. i'm unjankeun yang. >> and i'm aaron gilchrist. right to your forecast. >> we did get a little sleet and snow in the northern suburbs, but that is melting as we have had temperatures above freezing since then and some rain. all this area in green getting at rain eastern suburbs here in west virginia, that is moving off to the north and east. light rain falling in prince george's county, anne arundel, northern calvert, charles county that's tracking off to the north and east. lingering light rain in frederick and howard counties. temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s, so don't have to worry about any freezing. near 50 southern maryland. and on the eastern shore, out of the mountains, many locations there are in the 30s and low 40s, as well, including the shenandoah valley. bus stop this morning, a little light rain between now and through 9:00. mid to upper 30s. so have an umbrella handy. temperatures over the next 24

find some common ground with president obama on taxes. he's got new taxes in there for corporations on the profits that they make overseas. 14% tax. even more on your future items. but tax breaks for the middle class built into this $4 trillion budget. a second tax credit for two parent working families expanding tax breaks toed a consult adults who don't have kid, expanding the child tax credit. all of that the president putting in the bunch the like intra structure-terdiction infrastructure roads, bridges, free community college new efforts with clean ene in the d.c. area will be glad to hear this, he's proposing a bit of a bigger raise for federal workers. >> tracie potts on the hill for us. thank you. and nbc's a vansavannah guthrie sat down with president obama. many of the many topics getting your kids vaccinated. >> it's good to them and the challenge you have is if you have a certain group of kids who

don't get vaccinated, then the folks who can't, small infants or people with certain vulnerabilities that can't get vaccinated, they suddenly become much more vulnerable. >> the president also take talked about the recent economic growth and his state of the union address. you can see their conversation coming up on the "today" show at 7:00 right here on nbc 4. the president also says the u.s. is doing everything in its power to rescue an american woman held by isis. the woman is a 26-year-old aide worker. u.s. officials have asked she not the be identified out of fear for her safety. the president called her captivity heartbreaking and says he has seen hostage videos posted by isis in that is one day after they purportedly beheaded a japanese. the jordan has condemned the

killing, but still willing to conduct a prisoner exchange with isis to bring its pie thelot home. chris christie will meet with david cameron today. he's in london this week to promote his state's life sigh sciences industry. the governor watched the super bowl at a pub in london with some exchange students from new jersey. over the weekend, he also went to a soccer match. a maryland woman who saved her neighbor's life in prince george's county is sharing her stop. erica bullock tells you news 4 our carbon monoxide alarm went off several times at the franklin park apartments on breezewood court. she said she called the main thanks department, but the workers did not find anything. the alarms kept going off for two days so bullock decided to call 911 yesterday. firefighters found carbon monoxide and evacuated the building. they also found her neighbor

passed out. >> pulled my neighbor out. it was heartbreaking to see her come out like that. >> paramedics revived the one and took her to the hospital in critical condition. firefighters say a ventilation pipe from a basement water heater leaked carbon monoxide. we reached out to the apartment complex but we have not received a response. and important warning as you head out this morning. why you you may want to be extra careful around school buses in arlington. plus reaction to all those sprnl ad super bowl ads this morning. why some are calling them a great big downer. >> temperatures on their way up but they won't stay there of course. tom goes through the temperature roller coaster in the next 24 hours at 5:41. but first, another way to reboot your resolution.

welcome back. starting today, you can get a school bus traffic ticket in northern virginia. crews installed traffic cameras on arlington public school buses. if you pass a stopped school bus with a camera you could be ticketed. vieolateors could face up to a $250 fine. and people complain about the speed cameras, but those cameras on the buses, it really is when you have a stop sign and there are kids crossing the street extremely important to stop. >> it's a no-brainer.

5:45. nearly 40 degrees outside our studios here in washington's tenleytown. radar mostly rain/sleet picture moving through, but there are some some icy spots out there. because of that howard county schools are opening two hours late today. and chuck bell is in the storm team 4 x 4 checking out the conditions on the road. >> reporter: good morning. we are on route 27 just where it intersects i-70 here in howard county. and, yes, indeed, our trip over from damascus to about the mounts airy area there are slushy areas on sides of the roads and some of the travel lanes are slushy at times. it is 33 degrees, so just barely before above the freezing mark. so keep a close eye out for iciness especially on secondary

and the girl power commercials came one advertisement that sparked outrage. >> or travel the world with my best friend. and i won't ever get married. i couldn't grow up because i died from an accident. >> yes, that little boy dies in this nationwide commercial. and now we are hearing from the insurance company. nationwide saying preventable injuries around the home are the leading cause of childhood deaths in america. the sole purpose of the message was to start a conversation not sell insurance. more than 22,000 tweets were posted most of them negative. and someone even started this twitter page @nationwidekills. the conversation i got to tell you, it's really heated on there. >> they're saying they're not selling insurance, but when an insurance company puts out an ad like that during the super bowl, there are a bunch of parents we

about this weather. >> do you want to run like an person with an umbrella this morning? have an umbrella with you because we have had rain overnight. still just getting light rain now in the storm team 4 radar. that's tracking from the southeast heading off to the east. with you but we have a temporary reprieve. there is rain on the radar in west virginia, that is heading off to the east. but the petrometro area getting some sprinkles. this will be moving right across virginia into maryland the district that will be between, oh starting now all the way through about 9:00 this morning. so have the umbrella with you. you'll need a warm coat and a wind breaker as we'll have the winds getting pretty strong. the winds, all these areas in tan, gusting to 50 miles per hour it includes northern virginia eastern west virginia just about all of maryland, the metro area and the eastern shore. might have a few scattered you power outages, so make sure your

afternoon and evening. melissa here now look at another accident. >> falls church. got more information. this is a vehicle rear susversus a pedestrian. the person will be okay but lee highway at rogers drive, they could have an investigation there a little longer. wider look at things overall no major problems on the beltway. 295 passing 50 is a little slow but again, that is kind of what happens on a day like today. 270 at shady grove, all of these folks head willed southbound. northbound not a lot of volume but again everybody headed north is fine as well. taking a look at 66 and 95 in virginia 66 you're about 45 miles per hour the entire way, so not bad there. 95 in virginia again slow through dale city. 17 miles per hour headed northbound. prince george's county,off all no major problems. nice and green. a lot of movement. a lot of the earlier road work

expected to testify in front of the education committee as his contract is up for negotiations. a deadline for the negotiations was extended last night, so we expect that there will be meetings today among the montgomery county board of education and dr. starr. they have until march to decide whether they want to extend his contract, but he's supposed to make some decisions about whether he wants to wait until that point. i think today is when that deadline is expected to pop up. we want to show you live pictures from the washington navy yard right now where in just a couple of hours, people who work there will take a huge step toward putting the tragedy that unfolded there behind them. >> we have a special look at the ceremony that is ahead. as the navy reopens building 197. that's coming up onn news 4 today
