now at 11:00, fierce winds have caused significant damage. we'll tell you about the local homeowner saw just moments before a tree came crashing into his house. a d.c. man killed in a hit and run crash. his fiancee is in the hospital.

now the faeps want justice. >> they done took mb's life. >> we'll tell you why the capital bike share might not work this week for thousands of people. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. we begin tonight with that fierce wind outside. it's already caused damage in parts of the metro area. good evening. i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. that wind sent a tree crashing into a home and had heavy construction equipment swaying from a high rise tonight. it's also causing our temperatures to dip. let's get over to meteorologist doug kammerer. it is cold out there. >> we're talking wind chills in the single digits. they were really gusting and, boy, they brought down the temperatures quickly. look at the wind in gaithersburg. up to 56 miles per hour. the highest i saw in this area. wintergreen, the ski resort 65 miles per hour there. but closer to home annandale 54

miles per hour. so we did see some damage out there. we also saw power out ajs throughout the evening. now starting to see those a little bit better. hagerstown look at the wind chill, 5 degrees. that's how it feels. 16 towards washington. now, tomorrow morning the actual temperature will be around 21 degrees. it will be windy, it will be cold wind chills in the single digits to teens. we'll talk about how fast we'll see a warm-up here and what our next chances for snow are in a couple minutes. we have team coverage on these wild winds that are knocking out power, even closing down some roads. >> the gusts are also sending trees on to houses. shomari stone is live at a damaged home in forest glen maryland. the man escaped injury there. >> reporter: the homeowner is concerned that this tree can cause more damage to his house especially with the wind gusts that are sweeping through this area. let me move out of the way. let me show you the extent of this tree. look how big it is. the homeowner says it's more

than a hundred feet. as you look right up at the second floor, what if someone was in that room if they were sleeping watching tv relaxing then that tree plowed right through. the good news is that no one was there. but the bad news is that this home is destroyed. >> pretty perturbed. a tree just fell on my house. >> he stands across the street from his damaged home in forest glen maryland. take a look. this huge tree sliced through the second floor bedroom. you can even see the ceiling fan. >> not really happy about the situation, to be honest with you. >> reporter: he was inside around 6:30 this evening. he heard heavy wind and looked out the window. >> the tree on the front of the house was leaning towards the house. called 911 to let them know that i thought the tree would fall any minute. >> reporter: it didn't take a minute. just seconds later the tree slammed into the home and ripped down power lines. >> when i was on the phone with 911 basically. >> reporter: firefighters secured the area while chris told me the wind is fierce. >> pretty fast right now just

standing out here with you. >> reporter: it was fast with wind gusts of 45 to 50 miles per hour in some areas. on adams dreev in silver spring this tree fell in a yard and across the street from the montgomery county courthouse. police closed the street. police are concerned construction materials on this building could fall. back and forth, glen chris fischer has fallen emotionally. >> i'm worried about the hole because i need to get a tarp or some kind of company out here to put something over it because it's essentially like i have a convertible for a house. >> reporter: you're now looking at a live picture of that hole what he describes as a convertible. the good news however, is that no one was hurt. he's going to call his insurance company and hopefully they'll take care of that damage. live here in forest glen where it is freezing i'm shomari stone, news 4. people are struggling right now. winter weather is slamming new england. this latest storm has crippled airports and is blamed for at least 11 deaths now.

in boston it has been the snowiest ten days in that city's history with nearly 48 inches of snow falling. skooms s schools are closed again tomorrow in boston and jury selection in the boston marathon bombing trial has been postponed again. even the patriots victory parade had to be moved to wednesday. patriots are safely back in boston tonight. their flight landed at a snowy logan airport just after 7:00 had to do a three-point turn to avoid mountains of snow in order to maneuver into a hangar. more than 6700 flights have been canceled the past two days because of this storm. already there are more than 400 flights canceled for tomorrow. about a dozen of them out of national airport. developing tonight, the man who had murder charges against him dropped just last month in the debt of felicia barnes he's been indicted again. that's according to our affiliate tv station in baltimore. in january, a judge ruled there

was insufficient evidence for a trial against michael johnson, but barnes' father tells wbal-tv that johnson will have to appear in court again. barnes disappeared five years ago while visiting family in baltimore. her body was later found in the susquehanna river. the d.c. branch of the naacp is looking into the firings of teachers at howard university middle school. we've reported last week that parents at that charter school say that three social studies teachers were terminated for teaching black history. the d.c. council education committee is already investigating that incident. a local grandmother is demanding justice tonight after her granddaughter was hurt in a deadly hit and run. julia pierce was injured, her fiance was run over and killed last night while trying to change a flat tire on the baltimore-washington parkway. now both families are demanding justice. news 4 dorothy spencer is live

with deta these two families are hurting and they're hoping that this driver will do the right thing and come forward. >> she got something in her leg and thigh and a brace on her neck. >> reporter: julia pierce is in a hospital where broken bones, but that's not the worst of what happened. julia pierce's fiance was killed when they were both struck by a hit and run driver. >> i hope whoever hit and run and then you know like he or she should pay for it because they done took somebody's life. and cost her her life too. >> reporter: this is julia's fiance rick warrick. he was changing a flat on their season nat ta sunday night. the spare tire was on. the lug wrench was in place when they were hit. the driver didn't even stop. >> i suggest that they might have been scared either they

had been drinking or the super bowl last night. everybody out there carrying on. >> reporter: warrick was taking pierce and his teenaged kids out to eat. the kids were in the back seat. they called 911 to get help for their dad. that's as pierce begged him to keep breathing, keep breathing, but it was too late. shar lien farrell anthony is warrick's mom. >> it's hard on me and i think the right thing will be to just to turn yourself in. accidents happen and we understand it was a tragic accident. >> reporter: it certainly was. anyone with information that could help solve this case is urged to call u.s. park police. we're reporting live from laurel tonight, darcy spencer, news 4. it was really bizarre what happened inside a d.c. nightclub yesterday. a couple of guys in the club got involved in an argument when one of them pulled out a samurai

sword and swung it at the other one. the man who was the victim in this case suffered cuts to his hands. all this happened at a club called the midtown on connecticut avenue yesterday. police say the guy who did the swinging with the sword is named michael mineer raymond. he was arrested and has been charged with assault with intent to kill. new problems with emergency communication on metro have been fixed tonight. that according to the transit system. over the weekend montgomery county firefighters discovered that certain red line had nonexistent radio coverage in case of emergency. the problem was found to be isolated to parts of the wheaton station. metro says the issue has now been fixed and that riders don't have anything to worry about. >> a teacher in the area was attacked by a student in his classroom. it's a story you see here only on news 4. the picture is graphic. according to prince george's county schools last thursday a student punched the teacher at forestville high school because of what the school district

called a misinterpretation of a comment. students and parents with whom we spoke say the teacher said something that the student considered racially insensitive. >> he's the teacher. he's there to teach. okay? and when that comment was made whether it was him or somebody else you know that's no reason for him to be attacked. >> that teacher was treated for minor injuries. the district continues to investigate. that student is said to be facing disciplinary action. new tonight a virginia woman supported isis and then lied to the feds when she was questioned about it. now she could spend up to eight years in prison. heather kaufman pleaded guilty today and faces sentencing in may. the fbi says kaufman promoted the terror group on facebook and wanted her ex-husband to fight with the group. when agents interviewed her last year she denied supporting isis. a new beginning for hundreds

of employees at the washington navy yard. today 400 people went back to work at building 197. that's the place where 12 of their colleagues were killed in a shooting rampage back in 2013. that building has been renamed and renovated to help ease the transition and the pain of that day. a memorial now stands where the first person was shot. that memorial honors those who were killed that day. the building will be staffed with more than 3,000 people by april. a big boost in military spending. it could be one area where republicans and the president are able to reach an agreement on his $4 trillion budget proposal. the president is recommending an increase to the pentagon's budget of -- by $38 billion. also a surge in spending on roads and other infrastructure. increased taxes on corporations and the wealthy and tax credits for the middle class including college students paying tuition

or parents paying for child care. >> one of the really exciting things about the president's budget is the invest innocentmentment it would make in early childhood education. it would make things easier for those in washington, d.c. and all across america. it would expand the district's ability to set its own budget and spend local funds. that move could clear the way for d.c.'s initiative to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana which has been held up by the current congressional spending deal. next at 11:00, whitney houston's daughter and the fight for her life. she was found unresponsive in a bathtub. tonight new details about her condition. capital bike share customers could find themselves going like this tomorrow. >> we'll tell you why you and your kids could soon be w how can

new developments tonight on the condition of the daughter of the late whitney houston. bobbi kristina brown is now opening and closing her eyes that's according to the tv show tmz. but she remains in a medically induced coma and is still on a ventilator. a police report released today reveal that paramedics responded to a call about a drowning at brown's home in atlanta on saturday. she was found facedown unconscious in a bathtub. tonight the national zoo has a new security plan in place for the next time you attend a big event there. zoo officials released the results of a month-long study to news 4 today. here are some of the highlights. on high visitation days like

easter monday the zoo will do random bag checks and visitor screenings that may include metal detectors. zoo police will also limit crowds as necessary. >> they were saying we'll have the close the zoo or do this or do that and those kinds of things i think are over the top. >> we're going to be implementing access controls similar to what you would see at museums, sporting events. >> the zoo's move was spurred by violence like last year's shooting on connecticut avenue. a major disruption right in the middle of the week. starting tomorrow evening members of the capital bike share will have limited access to that service and nonmembers won't be able to rent a bike at all. jackie bensen with a report on what's causing this problem. >> capital bike share is so popular that even on an evening where frigid wind gusts took your breath away people are still renting bikes. >> i love it yeah. not on windy days like today as much but you know love it.

>> but for about 24 hours starting at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow the convenient red bikes will be somewhat less convenient so that software can be upgraded. updates on station and bike availability will not be generated for websites and mobile maps. new memberships and renewals won't be available on the website. temporary users who pay by credit card often visitors to the district will not be able to do so at all. >> members who actually have keys a month, a daily key or a year can rent bikes but they can only rent it from the same station once. during this process, they will not be connected to the internet so they won't be communicating information to our back end server. >> so many make bike share a regular part of their commute that even a disruption of one day affects a lot of people. there are 28,000 registered users in the d.c. area. >> even on rainy days i like to do this because they have better

town. the wind is beginning to subside. our wind advisory has been canceled. that's the good news. earlier tonight we were talking about a wind intensity with downed branches and poles. don't think that will be the case now. we'll still see the trees bending. you'll hear them outside your door and see a little bit of that garbage, debris flying around on the roadways. give yourself a little extra time and continue to do so even through the morning hours. no rain or snow in our region. guess where you have to go? up towards boston where they're closed for five out of the six last days, amazing they've seen so much snow up there, that system is now moving out. for us it's just bringing in the cold and let's take a look at the wind chill overnight tonight into the kay tomorrow. here's 7:00 a.m. it will feel like 10 outside. 12 in manassas.

11 in leesburg. temperatures will warm a little but not much. look at the wind chill around 1:00. 28 in d.c. 22 in gaithersburg 28 in manassas. especially if you're downtown going through one of those buildings, on one of those bibs. if you're dressed for should be okay. cold wind early but a better afternoon during the rest of the day. high temperatures tomorrow into the 30s. 40 in fredericksburg. with a little bit of sunshine. tomorrow afternoon will be a little bit better. it gets even better still on wednesday. then we get to thursday. here's future weather. here's 8:00 on thursday. the cold air will be in place. look at the snow coming down during the morning rush. 11:00 snow around the d.c. metro area. we're not forecasting much snow at all for the thursday event, but it will also bring in very cold air. 34 degrees on thursday after a high of 50 again on wednesday,

then straight down. look at the low temperature. 17 degrees. it will be quite cold early on friday. we have another storm potential for a storm coming up over the weekend saturday to sunday. but saturday looking like a pretty good day. the possible storm would be on sunday. but lots of time to watch that. a lot of you on my twitter and facebook pages ask me what's going on with sunday's storm? will we get out of school next monday? really? we're six days away. not even going to approach that subject. >> so do your homework. all right. >> our director just pointed out there's only 15 days to pitches and catches reporting. >> oh yeah that's true. >> that's enough to lift your spirits on a cold night, right? >> the wizards won't it will your spirits.
