and traffic on the 1s. we learn whether joshua star will keep his job. the vote on his contract could be hours away. megan mcgrath live outside the school headquarters with what will happen today. >> reporter: will they renew his contract? does star want a new contract? it's unclear. the deadline for star to tell the school board to renew was on sunday. the board didn't hear from him. star was scheduled to scheduled to brief the panel. he did not attend. he allowed others to answer questions on that topic. the school board will meet today in a closed-door session to get legal advice on the contract. they're expected to vote on his future. and whether or not they will extend his contract or give him a new contract.

now five of the eight board members need to vote yes in order for star to stay on. of course a story we'll be continuing to follow throughout the day. reporting live from school board headquarters megan mcgrath. news 4. thank you. it is law to start school after labor day. according freelance star the school board rejected a proposal to start classes before labor day. the trend may be changing. ma nas kus park is considering a starting earlier. today you can learn more about the plans to improve i 66. the public meeting tonight will discuss ways to ease congestion on i 66 between route 15 and hey market and the capital beltway. the meeting happens between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in vienna. the meeting was postponed in january due to severe weather will be made up later this week.

hearing from the father of a teen who was killed in baltimore four years ago. he said the man accused and cleared of killing her will likely face charges again. we expect to hear from the city's prosecutor today. last month the judge ruled there was not enough evidence against michael johnson to continue his murder trial. he was accused of killing felica barns and throwing her body in the river. prosecutors promise to appeal the judge's decision. here is what barn's father told our affiliate in baltimore. >> no child should be murdered in our nation without someone standing trial. >> two years ago johnson was convicted of murder until a judge granted him a new trial. when the judge declare admit trial last month, johnson was set free. coming up on 5:00 after the hour. you can weigh in on the budget.

nbc news confirms 12 people died in the winter storm that is affecting everything from here to new england. >> today boston schools are closed again. nearly 48 inches of snow has fallen in the last ten days there making it the snowiest ten-day stretch in that city's history. a judge postponed jury selection in the boston marathon bombing trial. all the snow is forcing the organizers to move the patriot's victory parade tomorrow. they landed last night. the pilot had to do a three-point turn to avoid piles of snow on the ground. we're keeping an eye on flight cancellations for you. we checked flightaware.com. more than 500 flights have been cancelled nationwide. there are 15 cancellations at reagan national. two flights cancelled at dulles.

live desk just in. the family of bobbi kristina brown saying police found drugs in her house in the wake of her near-drowning. this is according to tmz. they're reporting the first time police did a search at the house it was an open search and they found nothing. when they returned the second time that's when they seized several items. at this point police will not officially confirm they found drugs. the daughter of the late whitney houston and her family recently telling nbc news that she is fighting for her life and surrounded by loved ones. >> angie goth thank you. >> 15 after the hour. rights now the wind is

starting to die down just a bit. tom says the winds are about 15 to 20 miles per hour right now. last night wind gusts were gusting between 40 to 50 miles per hour. caused all type of problems. roads were closed power lines down construction equipment could be seen waving in the winds. this video shows the severely damaged home there. chris fisher was inside his house. he called 9-1-1 when a tree started to lean. then it crashed into the second floor bedroom. it's not known the cost of those damages are just yet or how long the repairs will take. warren sap is officially no longer with the nfl network. the network said it fired him after police arrested him yesterday morning and charged him with soliciting a prostitute. sap is also accused of assault.

he played defense in the nfl for 12 years and inducted into the pro football hall of fame just a couple of years ago. today the dod is being sued. several groups including the aclu filing a suit against the department of defense. they say the dod doesn't recruit enough women and won't release records about the practices which it is required to make public. they focus on recruiting at the army naval, and air force academys. we left a message for the department of defense. the obama administration is discussing whether to provide weapons to ukrainian forces. these talks come as the ukraine comes under increasing attacks by pro-russian separatists. pro-russian rebels have taken control of the 15 settlements in eastern ukraine including a strategic railway hub. the conflict so far has claimed more than 5,000 lives since last april. a virginia woman now facing up to eight years in prison for lying to the fbi about her support for isis.

heather coffman outside richmond pleaded guilty yesterday. police arrested her last year following her for months due to suspicious facebook posts with possible connections to isis. calfman will be sentenced in may. just weeks after metro's underground emergency, crews fixed another communication issue. emergency radio coverage is working along the wheaten metro platform. this happened during a routine inspection on friday. d.c. firefighters said they had communication problems at l'enfant plaza after a woman died after smoke filled a tunnel. your children are safe and they're not making security changes at prince george's county after a teacher was attacked in class. we're told the teacher was punched by a student at the high school last week. the district is working to

discipline the student. parents told us they want to know what happened. >> when was the rest of the teachers and my daughter said everybody was crowded around the teacher while he was basically getting beat up. >> according to the school the teacher said something to the student and it was misinterpreted. parents told us the comment was racially charged. one man recovering and another man facing charges after a bizarre sword attack. d.c. police arrested michael yesterday for swinging a samurai sword at the man. he's charged with assault with intent to kill. the victim suffered cuts to his hand. the next time you go to a event at the national zoo you'll notice new security measures. they released a draft of the safety plans to news 4. during big events like easter monday the zoo will do random bag checks and may use metal detectors to screen viz force. zoo police will limit the crowds in necessary.

two 18-year-olds were shot outside the zoo the day after easter. if you work in maryland today we're learning more about a proposal to guarantee you paid days off if you're sick. in the state of the union president obama pushed are more paid sick leave for workers. there's a bill in maryland to guarantee a week of sick leave for everyone in the state. a group advocating for the change will present the analysis of the bill today. all right. so you to plan ahead if you use the capital bike share. you may not be able to raent bike later today. the company is updating the software. beginning at 7:00 tonight you will not be able to pay by credit card. the bike share website and mobile maps will not show where bikes have available. you won't be able to become a member or renew your membership. >> members who have keys whether it's for a month, daily key, or a year can rent bikes but they can only rent it from a same station once. the software upgrade will

vaccinated. new jersey's governor on a trip overseas yesterday talked about parental choice. his office came back and clarified say, yes, believes in vaccinations. we're hearing that from christie from rand paul a lot of choice. it follows a recent poll that republicans and independents much more interested in parents having a say whether or not their kids get vaccinated versus democrats who are much more likely to suggest vaccinations insisting they're safe. both of the scientists out there say they're safe and new overnight so did hillary clinton. she tweeted that the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccines work. she put it it #grandmothersknowbest. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill. thank you. in virginia lawmakers could let cities and counties ban plastic shopping bags. the virginia state senate passed a measure to do just that.

west virginia as well in the low 20s near 20 degrees. cold temperatures in western maryland. right now garrett county it's only 5 above zero in oakland. our windchill temperatures -- because the winds have diminished they're not as bad as they could have been. we had the winds that were howling over 50 miles per hour yesterday afternoon. now they're down aro to drop the windchill to 6 in gaithersburg. farther west and north the windchill in lees burg just 9 degrees. dulles' windchill at 11. layer up as you're heading for the metro or walking to work or school this morning. you'll be happy you layered up. look at the windchills by 8:00 they'll be a little bit better. most windchills in the low to mid teens. then the windchills by noontime should be in the mid to upper 20s as temperatures will begin to climb into the 20s 30s. gentler winds during the afternoon around 5 to 10 miles per hour. enough to have our windchills down to around 30 degrees by

a merger could fend off competition from amazon and walmart. they tried to buy office depot before but rejected the deal. the energizer bunny will keep going. the company will begin selling aa batteries made from partially recycled old batteries. they are the first from a major brand to use recycled material. about 4%. it's part of the efforts to reduce the environmental impact of powering all of our devices. back over to you. >> thank you. new this morning if your daughter or son is looking at colleges in virginia they could be writing papers with solar power there. the department of energy is spending $800,000 to start solar power programs at 15 schools in the state. that's according to the news leader. in our area marymount university and shenandoah university are listed among the schools in the program. right now people across the northeast are struggling to dig out after another blizzard
