so far no flights cancelled at bwi marshall. we learn whether joshua star will keep his job. the vote on his contract could be hours away. megan mcgrath live outside the school headquarters with will happen today. >> reporter: will they renew his contract? does joshua star want to be renewed? all of these things are unclear at this point, but woe could get some answers later on today. now the deadline for star to let the school board know whether he wants to be renewed went on sunday. but the board did not hear from him. star was also scheduled to appear with a panel to brief the county council on a plan to protect students from child abuse and neglect but he did not participate in that panel. now the school board is expected to meet later on this morning at a closed door session. they're going to be getting some legal advice about star's

contract and then we're expecting a vote on whether to keep him. whether to renew star's contract or not. all of that expected later on this morning. five of the eight members of the school board would need to vote yes to keep star on, and it's, only obviously, a story that affects a lot of people. we'll keep on it and let you know what the board decides and what joshua star has to say. reporting live from the school board headquarters. thank you. it's the law to start school after labor day in virginia. they plan to follow this this year. the district started before labor day in the past but the school board rejected a proposal to do so this year. according to the freelance star. right now king george's have already approved the change. a man accused of killing a teen in baltimore will likely fashion face charges for a third time.

last month the judge ruled there was not enough evidence against michael johnson to continu murder trial. he was accused of killing felica barns an the river. the judge dropped charges against him but barn's father told our affiliate in baltimore that johnson has been indicted again. firefighters discovered another communication issue following metro's underground emergency. metro said emergency radio coverage working along the metro platform at the wheaten station. they found they could not communicate with each other between the ground and the platform. this happened during a routine inspection on friday. d.c. firefighters say they had similar communication problems at the l'enfant plaza at metro station when a woman died after a smoke filled the tunnel. a new push happening today in maryland to make sure you had leave. the working matters coalition will present new information about the benefits of earning

people who wrote letters to the president about the affordable care act will actually meet with him today. they are expected at the white house a little bit later. this comes on a day when the house will vote on a bill to repeal that law. the bill that the president says he will veto. thank you. it's 6:15. developing story this morning. a new report says police found drugs in the home of bobbi kristina brown. according to tmz. the drugs were found during a second search of brown's home. family members say that the 21-year-old daughter of whitney houston is in a fight for her life this morning. she remains on a ventilator in a medically induced coma and reportedly opening and closing her eyes. brown was found face down and unconscious in a bathtub over the weekend. price george's county school is figuring out how to discipline a student that attacked a teacher in class. this the teacher that was punched last week. the teacher said something the

student misinterpreted. parents told us the comment was racially charged. >> if the dependcommend was made that i was told was made i could understand the pain and anger that was incited in that student. teacher was treated and okay today. the school district told us it's working to find out exactly what happened. the d.c. branch of the ncaap is looking into the firing of howard university middle schools. three social studies teachers were terminated for teaching black history. the d.c. council isthe dod is being sued. they say the dod doesn't recruit enough women and won't release records about the practice which it public. they focus on recruiting at the army, naval, and air force academyings. we left a message for the

defense department to find out what they have to say. a virginia woman facing up to eight years in prison for lying to the fbi about her support for isis. heather coffman outside richmond pleaded guilty yesterday. police arrested her last year following her for months d suspicious facebook post possible connections to isis. she'll be sentenced in may. one man recovering and another man is facing charges after a bizarre sword attack. d.c. police arrested a man yesterday for swinging a samurai sword at a man. he's charged with assault with intent to kill. it happened at midtownon connecticut avenue at dupont circle. the victim suffered cuts to the hand. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an explosion that killed two people and burned two others in australia. they were working on an electrical transformer at the time of the explosion. starting tomorrow you can

see important civil rights artifacts in washington. the library of congress is opening the rosa park ss exhibit to the public. this is also the first time a lot of researchers will be able to see those items as well. rosa parks' bible, her presidential medal of freedom, and even one of her hats will be there. new this morning a new study said it is now more difficult for low-income students to earn a bachelor's degree. a higher percent of low-income students earn a degree today than they did 40 years ago. however, the number increased by only 3 percentage points from 6 to 9%. in the same time graduation rates for students from wealthy families jumped by 33%. it was released by two education groups. high winds and high emotions for a homeowner in the forest glen neighborhood in montgomery

county. this video shows the severely damaged home. chris fisher was inside his house when heavy winds caused the tree in his front yard to lean. as he called 9-1-1, the tree crashed into his second floor bedroom. let's go to tom to find out what the winds are like right now. >> the winds have diminished and we have just unloading here some of the reports from last night that we had come in. we had gusts to over 50 miles an hour from last -- yesterday afternoon to last evening. as a result we had downed branchs and poles. we had some trees that bent over garbage cans were flying an. lighter winds are going continue to be moving in this morning as we've had the winds diminish now. they are down to around 15 miles per hour or so. good weather for the drive time morning commute. we'll have dry pavement.

winds blow dried the roads from yesterday's rain and a little bit of light snow. we'll have a dry roads for the morning commute. we'll be in the low 20s and as we look at the afternoon commute, still dry roads. you'll need the sun glasses with the low sun angle. we'll have it in the mid to upper 30s by later this afternoon. the feels like temperatures because the winds have diminished we don't have really terribly cold windchills by 8:00 a.m. they'll be in the teens with winds around 10 to 15 miles per hour. you need to wear a couple of layers. by noontime the windchills improve. they'll be in the 20s. by late afternoon our windchills should be in the low 30s as the winds go nearly calm and temperatures get into the mid to upper 30s. four-day forecast in the upper 20s tomorrow morning and rebound nicely up to near 50 degrees tomorrow afternoon. then we take another plunge back down into the deep freeze on thursday. thursday morning is when we might get a little bit of a dusting of light snow for the morning commute. there's about 30% chance of

that. so not a big deal. it may be affecting our morning commute on thursday. still cold on friday. highs in the 30s. then we rebound again over the weekend near 50 on saturday and sunday. might gate little rain on sunday. too warm for any snow. dhilly first part of next week. a look at the hour-by-hour cold temperatures over the next 24 hours. how is the commute? >> overall looking pretty good. a couple of crashes out of the way and clear again. beltway at tyson's corner heading into town. overall looking pretty good. a little slow here top of the beltway new hampshire avenue and inbound 395. these are typical slow spots but i wanted to mention if you're heading out any time soon. 66 headed into town a little slow at 41 miles per hour. it is move and no incidents, fingers crossed, at this point. 95 virginia and stafford you can see we're a bit slow headed northbound and a little bit southbound there.

just after dale city and then in through dale city northbound is slow as well. going about 15 miles per hour there. take a look at prince george's county overall looking pretty good here. indian head highway, branch avenue pennsylvania avenue everything moving fine. no major issues. back at 6:31. weather and traffic on the 1s. thank you. 6:22 is the time. now to a news 4 i-team investigation. there have been hundreds of car thefts since the start of the year. and commuters around the d.c. area could be vulnerable. police say the crooks are canvassing the area looking for people who warm up their cars leaving them unattended in the driveway or gas station with the engines running. >> they're not stealing the cars to keep them. >> correct. this is a theft for federal government -- profit. >> we go undercover to see how

they operate. we'll show the crimes caught on camera. you won't believe how bold they truly are and why drivers need to be on alert. in news for your health today been you and your kids may not be getting the right amount of sleep. experts a the national sleep foundation come up with a new list of recommended sleep times. the results of a study depend on your age, for example, a newborn up to three months old should get between 14 and 17 hours a of sleep every day. a young adult between 18 and 25 should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep. it's a new category for the experts. and ranges for older adults too. this is the first time any professional organization developed age-specific recommendations for sleep duration. if you're watching us on your computer or phone. researchers say the screens could be hurting your child's ability to sleep. the study was published in a journal. researchers looked at 10,000 teens 16 to 19.

political. you heard president obama with savannah on the "today" show interview say that yes, people should get their kids vaccinated. now chris christie governor of new jersey on an overseas trip made some confusing comments about it. i said confusing because what he said was parents need to have choice and that needs to be factored in. there needs to be a balance between parental choice and what the government says we should do. his office came back and clarified he's saying you shouldn't get the shot. he's saying there needs to be balance. what the balance is wasn't very clear. overnight we heard from hillary clinton who tweeted following up with what president obama said. that absolutely people should get their kids vaccinated. the earth is round, the sky is blue vaccines work. end of story. but there is still a lot of question. a lot of controversy about this. we're likely to hear more about that with health experts on the hill today. >> tracie potts on the hill for us. thank you. uva issued a mumps alert on

campus. the university said a case of mumps has been confirmed there. they're waiting on test results for other suspected cases. students were notified in an e-mail about the incident. mumps is spread through coughs sneezing or direct contact with an infected person's saliva. >> a d.c. man's family is preparing a funeral after he was killed in a hit and run. we spoke to his mother, she said she forgives whomever hit him. rick warrick was changing a flat tire. he fiancè and two teen children with him. she hopes the driver turns him or herself in. it's 6:34. new security measures the next time you visit the national zoo on easter monday. the zoo released a draft of the safety plan to news 4. during big events the zoo will do random bag checks and may use metal detectors to screen visitors. the zoo police will also limit the crowds if necessary. last year two 18-year-olds were

welcome back. it's 6:38. if you live in maryland your children's school could be getting a lot less money from the government this year. larry hogan gave big cuts. maryland schools are launching new website to show what the budget changes mean. they say the cuts will seriously hurt education across the state. it may not be able to use plastic bags to carry your groceries and other items in virginia. the virginia state senate passed

a measure that would allow cities and counties to ban plastic shopping bags. however, there is an exemption that allows plastic bags for meat newspapers and virginia abc stores. the bill passed with bipartisan support. it goes to the virginia house delegates for consideration. >> you get a bag for the liquor. got to keep the vodka covered up. >> it's different from a bag tax. we eliminate the bags. >> yeah. grab your coat gloves scarf. everything! jackets, if you can. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell live in wood bridge. hey, chuck. >> reporter: absolutely right. it is definitely a three or four layer kind of a morning out here. 20 degrees in wood bridge with windchill near 10. we'll talk to folks in the slug line but the slugs have gotten in cars and ridden away. we'll show you that. a little early light in the eastern sky already. loving the fact that the days are getting longer.

right now everyone from chicago to boston is digging out from a major snowstorm overnight. the number of deaths from the storm rose to 15. the snow forced organizers to delay the patriot's victory parade until tomorrow. more than 500 flights have been cancelled nationwide. >> boston is probably the worst hit city. they are digging out of 48 inches of snow from the back to back snowstorms. the weather channel's jim cantore is live in boston with a look at conditions there. people say boston is ready for this. it's bad where you are. >> reporter: here is the deal guys. never in my career which spans about 30 years have i stood in 40.5 inches of snow.

that's what we gotten here in boston in the last five days. it's a new record of boston. we've never had a period of time for seven days we've gotten that much snowfall. that's amazing to say the least. the deal is there's no place to put it. the snow literally has to be pay lowed, you know, they take the loaders in here and take it out piece by piece. it's not going to melt any time soon. we won't see temperatures get above freezing for the next several days. that's unfortunate for boston. they would love to have a little help from mother nature. you can see the beautiful sunrise. let's take you over here at the wharf. look at the gorgeous sunrise. i heard chuck talking about the one you have in d.c. well, we're not doing so bad in boston. that's for sure. patriots came in last night about 8:00. their parade will be postponed to tomorrow because of the weather. it's interesting even a week ago we saw the potential for a storm coming for boston.

brigade are being recognized for their efforts during world war ii. their actions actually lead to a hollywood movie. they helped liberate europe from fascism. today the 50 survivors head to capitol hill to receive the congressional gold medal. the senate is expected to vote today on a bill aimed at a reducing a suicide epidemic among military veterans. that measure is named for clay hunt, a 26-year-old veteran who killed himself in 2011. an estimated 22 military veterans commit suicide every day. more than 8,000 every year. the bill already cleared the house in a unanimous vote. it is expected to pass in the senate. it will soon be 100% legal for you to ride share services like uber and lift in virginia. the senate and the house voted to lift a ban on the services and regulate them in the commonwealth. the companies will be required to ensure drivers are at least 21 complete background checks

and purchase liability insurance. governor terri mccullough has to sign the final bill into law. it's not the only good news for people who use the ride sharing apps. you may soon have a third option to choose from thanks to google. cnbc is live with the story. google can do about anything now. >> that's right. it's google's world and we're living in. it goggles may be looking to take on uber. they could launch the ride sharing service as a way to build driverless cars. google has been one of the biggest investors in uber. they sent out a tweet not commenting directly on the report but saying the employees continue to use uber and lift. the energizer bunny will keep going. the company will begin selling aa batteries made from partially recycled old batteries. they are the first from a major brand to use recycled material. about 4% it's part of
