we've learned. >> reporter: just moments ago, we heard from police and they say that west frederick middle school is also going to be closed today to aid with the search for suspects in the shooting. so west frederick middle school also closed today in addition to frederick high school where the shooting took place. so students waking up this morning who go to frederick or those two schools, you should not report to class today. staff however should report to the school as normal. two students the ones shot last night, we're told that they are recovering from their injury. they are expected to be okay. the search for the person or people involved that is still on going. it was 8:00 last night during a junior varsity basketball game when shooting took place. shots rang out outside of the gym. two students were hit.

a police officer on the scene explained the chaos. >> gunshots going off around the gym packed with kids, you can imagine everybody is running. >> reporter: police and security officers secured the cafeteria area they then moved everyone from the gym nas yaum into that cafeteria. and then they began to search the rest of the campus. but they did not find any suspects. the all clear was given. parents who were in a staging area at a nearby bowling alley were reunited with their students obviously a lot of relieved parent. but two students are recovering from gunshot wounds and the search for the suspect still ongoing. back to you. today d.c. council will hear from metro riders who witnessed the smoke emergency earlier this month at the la fants plaz'enfant plaza station. the council is looking into how metro and d.c. emergency crews responded to that emergency.

the meeting is set for 2:00 p.m.. metro also about to get a rare distinction only the second u.s. transit agency to ever face a comprehensive inspection by the federal government. u.s. department of transportation will start that review next month. it will focus on the year all safety culture and will include rail, bus and training operations. this inspection is separate from the ntsb investigation of the deadly smoke emergency. right now for the first time since dow tuesday'stuesday's deadly crash the trains are moving again. know letmolette green has more. trains coming from the crossing site set set to arrive at grand central station. we want to take you live and show you what things look lying. we've been watching this since we came on the air. and then overnight, we got new

video in of the mangled suv involved in that fiery crash being removed from the crash scene. among the six killed we learned this morning 69-year-old walter leidtke being remembered as brilliant and well respected curator at the metropolitan museum of art. federal investigators still looking at every piece of evidence trying to figure out what went wrong there. back to you. 6:05. today a bill to protect students on campus from sex assaults is moving through the virginia house of delegates. that bill would require college faculty and administrators to report the assaults to the school's coordinator of compliance falling under title ix. today there will be a lot of talk about the tolls you pay on the dulles greenway. virginia delegate aims to change the toll structure. he wants a distance based tolling structure. he's also calling for stricter

today we will learn how the kennedy center expansion project

is progressing. the commission approved a preliminary site and building plan. today they're hoping for input from the kennedy center about a proposed floating riverfront pa pavilion pavilion. d.c. is one of the top 20 safest cities in the world. that was out of 50 cities the study included. the report from the economist intelligence took into account more than just crime, though. it considered digital security health security infrastructure security and personal safety. the report also concluded that tokyo was the world's safest city. other u.s. cities that came ahead of d.c. were new york san francisco, los angeles and chicago. >> interesting that they take into account other thing, not just crime anymore. time for your weather and traffic on the 1s. >> amelia segal drove the 4 x 4 to leesburg. she joins us live with your forecast.

i see you're bundled up. >> reporter: yeah, i am. i have to say what a difference a day can make. it is going to feel so much colder today than yesterday. we're out here at the leesb park and ride, the 4 by # oig reporting a temperature of 36 degrees. but it's not just the temperature. it's already breezy out here so when you factor in the wind, the windchill right now around 30 degrees. so commuters heading to the park and ride, you definitely need to bundle. it will only get worse. winds will continue to pick up and temperatures actually fall throughout the day. so a jacket glove, might even want to grab the hat for today. as far as the bus stop make sure the kids have the warmer jacket. breezy now but windy at recess. windchill temperatures at recess and for dismissal will be in the teens. so it's cold this morning. melissa, any issues on the roads? we have breaking news. we're talking about the outer loop just after connecticut avenue. chopper 4 has been over the

talked to a teen whose father was just run over. the anne arundel police department has launched an internal investigation. we're being told that dispatcher will no longer be in contact with the public. police have not made an arrest in the hit and run case either. the woman hurt in the accident remains in serious fairfax county man is in jail for impersonating a police officer. a driver on 66 called police last week saying this white chevy impala was trying to pull over cars on the prince william county area. police tracked the car to ahmad's home where they found the car with blue and red strobe lights installed in the grill. they also found marijuana in the call. police in cleveland will soon begin wearing body cameras. decision comes months after the shooting of a 12-year-old boy which received national attention. the deployment of cameras will happen over the next few months. cameras will be worn on the officer's ballistic vest or oirt uniform. officers will have to activate those cameras hechls. the cleveland police department

says the cameras will increase transparency and officer account accountability. i'm molette green at the live desk. we have new information coming in from taiwan where there is a very active scene right now as the search goes on for the missing 12. divers are in the water looking as we speak. we've learned that the bodies of co-pilot and pilot among those pulled from the crash scene. also new overnight, the nose section of the plane lifted from the water. and relatives of some of the 31 killed that is now arriving from china to the capital city. back to you. it's coming up on 18 after 6:00 right now. a pilot is dead after his small plane hate tv news tower in texas.

the cause unknown right now. that plane crashed into the kcbd you news tower this lubbock. the tower is still standing but there are fears it could fall on to the the tv station. the tv station is currently off the air. a bomb threat caused the evacuation of a walmart. it was a false alarm. we're told there was a small fire in the store just after 6:00. still no word though, on what started that fire. today democrats will outline their plans on how to fix the no child left behind law. house democrats will hold a forum today in protest of a republican bill that bill strips much of the federal government's education powers and gives them to the states. the no child left behind law passed during the bush administration. it mandates annual testing and requires schools to show annual growth or face consequences. a principal who helped resurrect an underachieving school in alexandria says she's

retiring retiring. the school was sin as having underachieving students. she's credited with changing the tone and increasing training. they will start the search for a new principal next week. a local university president wants the white house to take its free community college proposal one step further and include historically black colleges. dr. frederick at howard university says graduation rates increased by 10% among those students who receive a full ride. if we don't have the historically black colleges and universities as places where these students can be taken in we will be educating less people of college. >> the proposal would cost the government more than $60 billion over ten year potentially this will increase the cost of tuition for other students.

new this morning, according to a new survey teens are partying less than you did when you were a teenager. that's according to a survey conducted by ucla. they found they're less partying during final months of high school. they also found first year college students sense of emotional b. well-being is at its lowest since 1985. ucla professor says the results indicate this generation faces greater pressure to succeed academically and just has less time to have fun. and that's too bad because i'm all for academic success, but part of those years you don't get back and you want to enjoy it. >> this is true. let's get right to tom kierein. we're anticipating a big drop in temperatures. >> and it is deceptive. if you've been out to get the paper or walk the dog, it probably doesn't feel too bad yet. by the time you're heading back home a big change will be blowing in about strong gusty

winds. a few scattered flurries in the panhandle of west virginia these patches of gray. these are scattered floorries trying to reach the ground. these are aloft, but some may be trying to reach the ground in howard montgomery northern part into frederick and farther south and west. and these are tracking to the south and east. all above freezing though. we're in the upper 30s near 40. these are the warmest temperatures of the day. later today, wicked windchills as the winds pick up we will have windchills by early afternoon down to the upper teens and by 8:00 windchills down to around 10 degrees much of the region. winds will start blowing around 15 to 20 miles per hour this morning and then during the afternoon, gusts of 35 miles per hour will.

event. news 4 your health a new breast cancer drug will soon hit the market. the fda granted accelerated approval for an experimental treatment. it, boss by rkworks by targeting proteins involved in growth of cancer cells. recent studies showed the drug stopped tumors from growing for more than 22 months, twice as long as the current treatment. some of your friends and neighbors in the foggy bottom neighborhood will be waking up without heat and water today. a water main break on 24th street flooded part of the first floor and underground garage and did damage to vehicles. it also caused the sidewalk to buckle making the main entrance unusable. building inspectors trying to figure out the extent of the damage. allow extra time on route 7 and belmont ridge road. traffic stops will begin there today, blasting in the area to relocate a main.

you can expect this every tuesday and thursday until march 24 between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m.. well, it looks like many of you will go out of your way for cheaper gas. according to a culler survey, 72% of people say they would spaypay cash if they could save 5 krentd as cents a gallon. the cheapest gas is in virginia right now. gas price there averaging $2.04. in maryland average is $2.17. d.c. has gas for $2.41 on average. and gas is $2.26 a gallon in west virginia. and in case you didn't noe notice we turned the corn other gas prices. we're thousand going back up already. like four crepts in theents in the last week around here. so that's over. >> going five miles out of the way is different than 15 or 20.

this case. back to you. it's now 6:33. today congressional republicans plan to introduce their response to the affordable care act. the gop will propose an alternative to the president's signature health care reform hoping it will effectively dismantle the law. the alternative could leave millions in limbo when it comes to coverage. meanwhile the supreme court will also look at the law. they will decide whether the afford owingable care act is constitutional. the district could become a no drone fly zone after a drone crashed into the white house lawn last week. a drone maker plans to create software to block washington flights. the chinese manufacturer says it is taking steps to ensure that it conditions happen again. software updates will be sent this week to the drone's navigation systems. one key partner in the international fight against isis pulls out, others are complaining the u.s. is not doing enough to stop the militant group. and now we're hearing from the man who is likely to take over

the fight. the president's defense secretary nominee. tracie potts is live with more. >> reporter: ashton carter tells congress that what we're doing right now simply is not enough. he may soon be in charge of that u.s.-led coalition. one of our partners united arab emirates, has pulled its pilots out saying search and rescue isn't close enough to syria to rescue them if one of their pilots go down and now we're learning that the fiery video showing their pilot burned alive actually happened weeks ago. jordan has retaliated. and they're also asking the u.s. for more military equipment. every single democrat and republican on the senate armed services committee voted in favor of that saying that he we need to get more air support on the ground. virginia tech is planning to mark the eighth anniversary of a mass shooting that left 33 people dead with a remembrance run. the school is planning ceremonies exhibits and other

events on april 16. a student gunman killed 32 students and faculty before taking his own life that day in 2007. the run in remembrance will happen and i will 17 in 18 in blacksburg. a bill would ban pet stores from selling dogs or cats from commercial breersd breeders. stores would only be allowed to see animals taken from animal care facilities or rescue organizations. not a distinction metro wants to be known for, the rare step being taken by the feds to make sure you are safe when you ride. so much for the springlike weather. the chilly commute in store for you this morning. plus getting to the bottom of the blunder. what seahawks head coach told matt lauer about that decision when matt joins us live.

developing news in frederick, maryland. two schools closed after two teens were shot outside frederick high school. this morning police are still scouring the grounds for clues and they're looking for suspects. megan mcgrath has been in frederick all morning and she joins us with more. >> reporter: within the last half hour, we've learned that west frederick middle school will also be closed today in addition to frederick high school. the two schools are right next to each other right next door to each other. they are in the same area similar parking lots. and roadways that lead in. so police want to expand their search for physical evidence. they want to limit foot traffic in the area so that their evidence is not disturbed. p so they now have closed both schools. last night the middle school looking at their website, they had a registration night for middle school students who are going to be coming here to frederick high next year. so certainly terrible timing for this shooting not that there is

ever a good time for something like this to happen. but certainly a scary situation al students who were shot last night are expected to be okay. they are recovering from their injuries. and the search continues for the person or people who fired those shots. now, it was 8:00 during a junior varsity basketball game between frederick high and thomas johnson high when shots rang out outside the gymnasium. those two students were hit. we talked to parents. they describe bhad they heardwhat had they heard. >> i heard five shots, really quick. so not quite automatic, but five fast shots. >> reporter: police and security staff, they went into the cafeteria, secured that area and then moved everybody into the cafeteria while they continued to search the rest of the campus. no suspects were found. so the search is still on. anyone with information, you are
