the search for answers after two teenagers were shot outside a high school basketball game. classes giving way to crime scene investigators today at frederick high school in maryland. >> the school will reopen to students tomorrow, but in the meantime the search for the gunman is still active. >> news4's mark segraves talked to students, parents, and police and has the latest from frederick. >> reporter: this is the field right outside of the frederick high school gymnasium where the two students were shot last night. you can see police are still here on the scene looking for clues. today police searched the ground surrounding frederick high school as well as inside looking for any clues that might catch whoever is responsible for last night's shooting. it was just after 8:00 p.m. while a basketball game between frederick high and thomas johnson high was going on inside two students were shot just outside the door to the gym. at least one of the victims was able to make it back inside and

alert security. at that point, the school was put on lockdown and a search of the area began. today police are reviewing surveillance video hoping to identify the suspect or suspects. now, the two victims were flown to shock trauma in baltimore. police tell us they're expected to be released either tonight or sometime tomorrow. all they'll say about their identity is that they are school-aged boys who went to school here in frederick county. they won't say which school they attended. coming up at 5:00 and 6:00 reaction from parents and students and the very latest from police about what they are hoping might help them to solve this crime. reporting from frederick, mark segraves news4. chopper 4 just flew to another high school just a few miles away from there. police tell us a 16-year-old student at tusk aroura high school assaulted a teacher inside a classroom. that student is in juvenile custody, the teacher at the hospital. police have not said what led up

to that attack. now a developing story involving threats of violence targeting the capitol. a prince george's county man is in federal custody right now. his name is michael bogoslavski and he's accused of threatening to shoot in m people. he's an army veteran who served in iraq and afghanistan. the threats were made through text messages to his wife who worked at the capitol. a search warrant was executed at his house and police say they found two guns and ammunition. kristin wright is covering the story and joins us at 5:00 with more on how police were able to make a quick arrest. this is chris lawrence at the live desk wh getting new details about a shooting that forced a college to lock down its campus. police say the incident at the university of south carolina was a murder/ed is. this has happened just a few hours ago inside the school of public health building in downtown columbia and just a few blocks from theatehouse. s.w.a.t. teams searched the entire building floor by floor, but there was no active shooter

inside. they found the sne victim delgado but haven't released any other information about who they are. we're going to keep gathering details and we'll bring you the latest as soon as it comes in. pat and jim? our transportation reporter adam tuss is tweeting the first details from the d.c. council hearing on last month's deadly underground smoke emergency at the l'enphant plaza metro station. a representative from the call center testified today that first responders were better off using cell phones in metro tunnel instead of radios. the council is examining how metro and d.c. emergency crews responded to that smoke emergency and whether the city is prepared to handle such crises. make sure you have our nbc washington app. we'll send you a breaking news alert with any new developments. a case of the so-called beer prong predator. a maryland man was convicted today of sexually assaulting four young men he met in bars. he met his victims as a college park bar then used beer games to

lure them to his home. still ahead, news4's chris gordon will talk to jurors and show video frefld the trial shown publicly for the first time. right now in new york the metro north commuter trains are running again, but investigators are still on the scene. they are trying to determine why the driver was in the crossing and caused that crash. the names of the victims are all noun. at 4:30 we'll have a witness account of what the driver in the suv was doing just before the train hit her. crews are still working on a water main break in the district. an eight-inch pipe broke on our street between connecticut avenue and 21st street. yesterday it's the same one that broke a week ago. water had to be shut off to that area today. traffic is also being rerouted. the break is hurting business for some restaurants in that area. wssc says it will have water restored by 5:00. time to turn to storm team

continue. we'll talk about that in a couple minutes. america's second lance armstrongest health insurer is the late toast fall victim to a security breach. it affects tens of millions of customers and employees. erika gonzalez has who it impacts in our area the most. >> we've heard the number potentially 80 million people at risk. we made a lot of calls today to narrow it down and exactly who in our area may be affected by this. out of more than a dozen states anthem insurance based out of virginia is the local state impacted in this breach. anthem took to social media tweeting there's no evidence of medical or credit card information compromised but the hackers did get a hold of names security numbers, addresses, phone, e-mail, and employment information. anthem is working with the fbi in investigating the hack but it has not said when it identified the breach or the period in which it happened. the breach affects people with

anthem coverage either now or even if you had anthem coverage in the past. the virginia attorney general says anthem has more than 3 million members in the commonwealth. that section of virginia that is exempt, what you see in white, the city of fairfax, the town of vienna and the area east of route 123. that's exempt, that you're not members of anthem. the rest of the state is. if you live in d.c. or maryland and your insurance is out of those affected areas of virginia your information may have been compromised. anthem also said affects those with medicaid coverage for the entire state of virginia. easiest thing to do look at your insurance card. if it says anthem or anthem health keepers your information may have been stolen. if that's you and you're wondering what now, go to our website, nbcwashington.com, and search anthem for the next

fire investigators have an important clue in a fire in schaap tilly last night. someone set a fire near a clothing display rack. shoppers had to be evacuated and an employee put the fire out with an extinguisher. no one was hurt but the fire did about a thousand dollars worth of damage damage. there is a plan in washington county to lessen the punishment for selling tobacco to kids. the washington county board of commissioners wants to decriminalize underage sales according to a report today in "the herald" mail. they want stores to face civil instead of criminal penalties. the store would be fined $300, the cashier or seller would be fined $50. the change has to be approved by the maryland general assembly. pope francis will make

jury selection begins next week in the so-called american sniper murder trial down in texas. but the case has received so much publicity the first rounds of jury screening are taking place right now. former marine eddie ray ruth is charged now with capital murder in the shooting death of retired navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle and another man. kyle was the subject of the film "american sniper," which is still nominated for an academy award and still number one at the box office. the trial will take place in a small town near ft. worth. normally, the jury pool would be about 175. instead, 800 summons were issued. jordan promised an earth-shaking response to the savage murder of its captured pilot, and today jordanian

fighter jets launched new air strikes against isis targets in syria. u.s. officials tell nbc news that a number of coalition aircraft were set to go out on the strikes today, but at jordan's request all of the bombing runs were turned over to them. jordanian tv later showed video of the operation and said it was named after the fallen pilot, and the jordanian military said the retaliation would continue until isis is defeated. today at the national prayer breakfast here in washington president obama called on people of faith to push back against those who, in his words,ed religion for their own murderous ends. >> you see isil the brutal vicious death cult that in the name of religion carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism. >> other guests at today's breakfast included the dalai lama and ebola survivor dr. kent brantley. the keynote speaker was nascar driver darrell waltrip. the head of disneyland is

speaking up about vaccinations as more children get sick from the measles outbreak. the measles has now hit 14 states. most cases are tied to the california kids theme park. the outbreak has been linked to unvaccinated children. bob iger said the most vulnerable including babies should be kept away from busy public places. he also said it's a good idea to trust scientists and doctors. >> well we're not in the medical profession obviously. we're not doctors. the research that i've seen and whey've read from places like the cdc suggest that getting inoculated is a smart thing and it's a proven strategy in terms of combatting a disease that, you know can be dangerous to young children. so i would -- personally i would advise it. >> parents in california can opt out of vaccinating because of religious reasons, but there's now a big push to do away with that exemption. so far there's only one confirmed case of measles in washington and it's unrelated to the california outbreak. snow snow more snow

massive piles line the streets of boston. check it out. even more snow is coming this weekend. this snow has narrowed sidewalks, limited visibility for drivers and there seems to be no end in sight. another winter storm is expected to hit boston from sunday through tuesday. at this rate there may be nowhere else left to put all that white stuff. >> the last round they had around 40 inches. now they could see another 10 to 12-plus inches early part of next weeb. >> folks around here are crying because they want the snow. >> i know. doug will talk more about that coming up on news 4 at 5:00. but for us it's the cold tonight as promised our temperatures today have been falling, right? we told you that. 44 degrees at 7:00 a.m. by lunchtime or temperatures were already into the low 30s and they continue to drop right now. we're at 32 with that average high of 43. so we got there but it was early in the day today and of course the winds have been picking up. 28 in canton springs, 25 in gaithersburg.

that's it for the actual air temperature and of course wit teens through the area right now. now, the wind will settle down but not until late tonight. i think around 11:00 p.m. after midnight when it should probably be the fairly calm early part of the day tomorrow. the cloud moving out of here too. look at this our winds gusting over 25 miles per hour manassas down through fredericksburg areas like pax river, over 25-mile-per-hour winds still. and i think by tomorrow morning again that wind will be fairly light that will impact theeratures. so 8:00 this evening. here we go. in the single digits across the area again. then late tonight single digits too, dropping to 3, gaithersburg 8 degrees right in d.c. and tomorrow morning into the teens. so we get a chance to bounce back just a little bit. but tomorrow we're going to bounce back in a big way. so tomorrow morning, let's go back to that a light wind, a cold start, 11 to 17 the spread in temperatures across the area. but with sunshine look at this we're going to get close to 40 degrees, less wind. it will be a really nice friday

there are conflicting reports about the condition of bobbi kristina and it's the most read story on our website. "people" magazine says she is brain-dead and her family is gathered now at her hospital bed today to say good-bye. but her family refutes that claim. they leased a statement today saying there is no special family gathering there today. they are just by her side as they have been since saturday. and they say she is not brain-dead. the daughter of whitney houston and bobby brown was found unresponsive in a bathtub in her suburban atlanta home. when you think about hearts this time of year valentines and flowers come to mind. >> but it's also heart health month. nbc's erica edwards takes a look at what you can do to keep yours ticking stronger and longer. >> reporter: a light snack of fruit and water is a far cry from the meals 55-year-old peter tuttle used to have like several pizzas in one sitting.

shoot his wife and others working on capit4:30 what went wrong? trains began moving again even as so many questions repainmained about a new york city train skrash. we're learning more this afternoon about that crash. the victims are all identified now. nbc's jay gray reports on the search for evidence and the answer to the biggest question of all -- why was the driver on the tracks? >> reporter: the trains are running again along the metro north line in new york. still investigators continue to sift through charred rubble after a deadly accident when a train slammed into an suv along one of the nation's busiest commuter railways. >> two big questions. why was the car on the train tracks? and what caused this accident to be failed for occupants of the train? >> reporter: witnesses say the woman driving that suv, 49-year-old ellen brody, got out of the vehicle after it was struck by the crossing guard

years, it was a great -- absolutely great joy. >> reporter: agents have located data recorders from the train and crossing signal. the on-site investigation is expected to continue through least the end of this week. jay gray, nbc news. a connecticut man may have cheated death twice after the metro north commuter train accident. this is fred bonnacourt. today is his first day using the train since tuesday but not the first time he survived a deadly tragedy. he was across the street when the bombs went off at the boston marathon in 2013. as far as tuesday's crash is concerned, he realizes he could have been one of the victims. >> i sit generally in the first car every day on the way home. everyone just needs to take away the message that like don't take things for granted. don't take any given day or people for granted. >> he says it's likely he'll know some of the victims because the same right fielders usually sit in the same cars every day.

i'm chris lawrence at the live desk. sources are telling us a woman is on life support in northern virginia after she was tasered in police custody. now, sources say the woman was being transported from fairfax county to alexandria to face unspecified charges there. we're told she resisted deputies and staff and it got to the point where one of the deputies had to use a taser on her. medical personnel were there on the scene, and the woman was transported to another area in the fairfax county detention center. once there, she had what's being described as a significant medical emergency. they rushed her to the hospital and she is now on life support in the intensive care unit. we expect to get more information from fairfax county any minute now. stay with us here on news4 and follow us on the nbc washington app. at the live desk i'm chris lawrence. >> thank you, chris. a new confrontation in the making between virginia's general assembly and the governor. the house is now set to release

its budget plan on sunday. it calls for more than $124 million for mental health care coverage and targeted safety net services. it will reject governor terry mcauliffe's obamacare medicare expansion and will not fund his healthy virginia entitlement program. just yesterday we told you that the house budget rejects millions in fees the governors wants to put on businesses. arlington has a need for affordable housing and a local church may help make that happen. members of the arlington presbyterian church have voted to redevelop the denomination's columbia pike property and turn it into housing. the church has been on the site since 1931. there's lot of planning and design necessary before the first stones will fall. pastor sharon core says some parts of their future are unknown, but some are not. >> we will stay in this community. we are connected to this community. this is the community we feel called to serve. where we will be once the

crash site to investigate. a new and serious warning today about the ebola outbreak. the world health organization says the number of cases at west africa has gone up for the first time this year and the coming rainy season could complicate efforts to contain the disease. the u.n. health agency says there were 124 confirmed cases last week. that's up from 99 the week before. what's more health officials tell us traditional methods of tracking the virus haven't worked in the most new cases and they have no idea how the patients were infected. closing statements will continue tomorrow in the trial of the "costa concordia"."concordia." today the captain's lawyers defended his delayed evacuation order after his ship's deadly wreck in 2012. 32 people were killed. charges against schettino include manslaughter and abandoning the ship. last week prosecutors called ske

combination of yours, mine, and ours. a new study finds that when it comes to parenting and mental health parents of blended families tend to experience the most stress. men and women with three or more parenting roles were 57% more likely to be depressed than those with just a single parenting role. the risk was even higher for fathers in blended families when a father has biological children who don't live with him. however, one researcher said the stress comes from a good place. they want to be a good parent. they want to be a good stepparent. and they want to be a good new parent. parents aren't the only ones stressing out. this is the time of year when their teenagers feel extra pressure too, about school. as news4's eun yang tells us it can impact their free time. >> here's something to think about as your teen spends his or her final months in high school preparing for college. according to a new survey teens are partying less than your generation did. the study from ucla found

buildings. here's nbc's ian williams. juror rescue efforts continued today. the search for those missing hampered by strong tides and murky waters. "it's a difficult mission," said this driver. while relatives attended a simple religious ceremony on the riverbank, from his hospital bed, one survivor said he felt there was a problem as soon as the plane took off. he told the person next to him they should hold onto their seats and cover their heads. this 52-year-old said the plane went down the minute he was done talking. the last moments of the flight were dramatically captured by the dashcams of passing cars. the plane clipping an elevated roadway before cartwheeling into the river below. officials today confirmed the recording of the pilot's distress call soon after takeoff. >> may day, may day. >> reporter: engine flameout he said suggesting possible engine trouble.

all right. we just checked the powerball and the current estimated hall for saturday night's drawing 360 million bucks. there were no big winners last night, no one in our area matched the fist five numbers for a $1 million prize. this would be a good time to win. it's been nearly a year since the jackpot topped $300 million.

of course the odds of taking home the big prize are 1 in 175 million. it was a spectacular geyser. you could see it from miles this morning. a damaged fire hydrant sent water shooting into the sky in california. the hydrant was sheared or damaged in a car accident. police blocked off the street until crews could get there to seal it up. no word on what caused the initial accident. this is not your average bus stop. luckily, no children were hurt when this school bus slammed into a card shop in chicago. this happened around 8:00 this morning. the driver lost control and veered off the road. investigators are still trying to figure out how this happened. there were no children on board at the time. it is still generating a lot of conversation across the country. the message behind one popular super bowl ad is resonating right here in washington. news4's zachary kiesch shows us why one council member wants more student/athletes to "play like a girl."
