boulevard and we will cover that one next friday. we'll learn all about father hurley. overall, no major problems as we're taking a big look at the beltway. live pictures in prince george's county coming up. it's 5:02. students return to frederick high school in maryland this morning after a shooting outside a basketball game earlier this week. two teens were injured in that shooting wednesday night. late last night, we learned that one of those students is in critical condition. police are also investigating whether the shooting was gang related. frederick high school has two more basketball games tonight. it appears those gaingames will go on as scheduled. 33-year-old lee rowroy damien ware was arrested near miner elementary. we're working to find out whether the child abused was a student. today defense lawyers for jesse matthew will ask that his trial in fairfax county be

delayed. he's accused in a 2005 sex assault as also abducting hannah graham.sex assault trial is scheduled to begin in march. lawyers are expected to ask that the trial be delayed until the summer to have more time to prepare. police say a sex assault happened last weekend at uva and was reported yesterday. it happened inside a dorm but they didn't release any other information. state lawmakers are considering legislation to mandate the reporting of campus sex assaults. late last year "rolling stone" published an article about a sex assault as a uva fraternity party that was later retracted. a little extra shut high could cost big bucks. the school board passed a budget. megan mcgrath is live at the fairfax county board of education with the breakdown of some of the numbers. >> reporter: good morning. it's a $2.6 billion budget.

an increase of $64 million over the fy 2015 budget. and it funds things like later high school start times as well as pay increases. but the chairman of the fairfax county schoolboard warns that the budget does not fund all of the school system's needs. since 2008 2100 positions have been cut in the school system and there has been a $435 million -- there have been # 4 $35 million in spending cuts. and the board chairman says the manner of budgeting is not sustainable. and eventually will affect the quality of education for all of our students. although she said that some gains are have been made in areas like keeping salaries even with other local injuries particularses. the budget funds full damons in elementary schools, it includes money to fund later start times for high schools. there is a 1% market scale adjustment for all employees in the school system.

and a step increase for eligible employees. the 2016 budget also include as request for an additional $70 million from the board of supervisors. should mention that this has been approved by the school board, but it needs to still be approved by the county. megan mcgrath, news 4. vre wants to raise fares on your daily train commute, but it's giving and you chance to weigh if first. the rail service wants to raise fares by 4% about 40 cents extra for every daily ticket. step up tickets on amtrak could also go up from $3 to $5. the first hearing is set for february 18 at the stafford county government center. the lengths police say a mother went to to teach her son a lesson that landed her in jail. when the pope visits d.c. in september, we're learning he's going to do something never done by a pope before. and it's a really cold start out there.

we're wait to being learn about the latest job numbers for january. they will be released this morning. given out by the bureau of labor and statistics, the report is a key indicator on the state of our economy. financial experts say the cold weather and plunging oil prices are not helping the nation's financial recovery.

the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at just over 5%. the same level as december. during his trip to washington pope francis will make an address to congress. he's scheduled to be in december in september. house speaker john boehner confirmed the pope formally accepted an invitation the speaker extended last year. tell be the first pontiff to address congress. he's also expected to visit president obama at the white house before making stops in new york and philadelphia. a lot of you may be starting your car with a remote starter this morning to warm it up in these frigid temperatures. but take a look at what happened when a man in texas did just that yesterday. the flames are shooting out of his car. it started in his truck and about ten minutes later, the truck caught fire and so did his house. the truck and house were both destroyed. no one inside the home was injured. just a chilling reminder of the dangers of those electronic remotes. >> just stay with it and know

i'm molette green at the live desk. right now new jersey is looking into its first suspected case of measles. we've learned that it involves a 1-year-old baby this jersey city just at the age of vaccination, but not yet immunized. and while the baby has reportedly recovered, residents in a building where the baby lives were informed of potential exposure ands the incubation period ends tomorrow. that's the latest from the live desk. health officials in suburban chicago have not yet identified the source of a measles infection at a daycare center. five infants were diagnosed with me measles, ten more kids exposed. 102 cases reported this year, 94 related to anoutbreak at disneyland. sounds unthinkable, but true. a missouri mother is accused of

conspireing with relatives to have her own 6-year-old son kidnapped. police say the boy's mother his grandmother, his aunt and a 23-year-old man plafnned the fake kidnap to go teach the child a lesson. apparently they thought the boy was too nice to people. police say the man lured the little man into his pickup truck on monday after school and that's when he tied the boy up, covered his head with a jacket and told him he'd never see his family again. >> he told the victim that he wasn't going to see his family anymore, that he was going to be nailed to a shed and he'll never go home. >> this is so ou boy told his teacher about the entire or teal.deal ordeal. he's now staying with another relative. i hardly have words. but the fact that the other relatives are involved? whiched which adt will say you can't terrify a child to teach them a

black boxes say everything was operating normally and the train was traveling below its 60-mile-per-hour speed limit. investigators also talked to train engineer steven smalls. they say he did hit the emergency brake, but takes about 30 seconds to stop the train once that happens. right now they're still trying to figure out why brody's car wound up on the tracks. you ask me should you be concerned in going down in the tunnel and using a radio. i'm going to tell you this. you'll do better using your cell phone. that is kenneth lyons, the head of the union that represents d.c. fire and ems workers. he said at a d.c. council hearing that emergency workers are still having a hard time hearing their radios in metro tunnels. the hearing was focused on the radio issues connected to last month's smoke emergency under l'enfant plaza. one woman died, 80 others were hurt. a woman is on life support today after being tased by

fairfax county dwepeputies. the 37-year-old woman was schedule to be transferred to alexandria where she was facing assault charges. she resisted the dwepeputy's in- instructions inst she suffered a significant medical emergency. the alexandria school board has adopted a budget of more than $305 million. among the priorities is tackling enrollment growth and to do that the school system wants to its make upgrades to patrick henry elementary or demolish it and build a new one. they say the out of date buildings were creating strain on ha their budget needs. sbloo this morning we're learning more about the resignation agreement for montgomery county school superintendent joshua starr. according to the gazette, starr will receive about $100,000 in unpaid salary through june. he'll also be allowed to continue driving a county issued car through next month and can stay on the school's health plan

through the end of the year. starr will stop working on february 16th. his resignation was announced on tuesday after several reports that said he wasn't seeing eye to eye with the school board. if you have a student at the university of maryland brace yourself. a 5% hike in tuition fees may soon be a reality. starting next year. maryland's governor says the hikes will be needed to make ends meet. he says unless more federal help is given, there is no other choice. the university currently has a $47 million budget hole. a hiring freeze will continue at the university and it seems layoffs may be likely. key initiatives could also be scaled back. more aspects of the "fifty shades of grey" books are coming to life. it turns out that super sexy apartment christian grey lives in in the books is a real place and you can say there. it's at a condo building in seattle. it has private roof terrace,

with another man who did travel to syria. a hearing on the lawsuit filed on behalf minnesota vikings running back adrian peterson is set to start later this morning. the nfl players association filed that suit in december after an appeals judge upheld peterson's suspension. back in november peterson pleaded no contest to assault for hurting his 4-year-old son with a switch. later today, jurors in hernandez murder trial will tour his home. hernandez is accused of killing the boyfriend of his fiance's sister in 2013. his lawyers agreed to remove personal and religious items from the home before today's visit. prosecutors claim someone added items items that might play to the sympathy of jurors. selling tobacco could be decriminalized. washington county commissioners want to change the penalty when they sell tobacco to underage kids. $300 for a first offense, and

for the morning commute. during the afternoon quite a bit of cloudiness rolling through. we'll be in the low 40s by mid to late afternoon. p so quite a dramatic jump. and then overmy tonight, not as cold if you're going out this friday night, it will be partly cloudy down to the mid-30s by midnight. and then low to mid-20s in the rural areas to mid to upper defense in the city by around dawn on saturday. if you'll be out hike and biking for the weekend, great weather for that. bright sunshine. it will be up around 50 degrees on saturday. sunday great weather for hiking and biking as well. i'll dust off my bike and get it out on the towpath on sunday. should be beautiful weather for that. we'll be in the upper 50s with lots of sunshine. doesn't look like any rain. when you're out and about keep up with the weather no matter where you are with the storm team 4 weather app. post your pics like kim werely did of these fantastic wave clouds that we had coming over us.

and some of it will go on display at the national gallery starting today. the corcoran closed last year. it has an estimated $2 billion worth of art. p. casino revenue in maryland is down for the second straight month. raising question as the market has been pushed beyond its lirmts. state's largest casino reported revenue of just over $49 million last month, down 8% from january of 2014. a new casino mgm is scheduled to open in 2016 at national harbor. it's not known whether this will pull customers away from the existing casinos. if your son or daughter is apply to go virginia tech they're not alone. the university says applications for admission have increased more than 7% this year. the admissions office says it has received more than 22,000 freshman applications. school officials say that they have also received more than 9,000 34riksapplications for the college of engineering. there are just over 1600 available spots in that school.
