. breaking news off the top at 6:00. there was trouble after takeoff. a small plane fell out of the sky in an arundel county. >> we're still waiting to get word on their condition, but here's what we know right now. about 2:00 in the afternoon, the plane crashed shortly after leaving the runway in fort meade at tipton airport. news 4's darcy spencer was the first tv reporter on the scene and she has the latest from investigators there on the ground. >> reporter: chris, i want to tell you where we are right now. on bald eagle drive off of route

198. you can see up the road here this is maryland state police troopers blocking the road. the scene is about a mile up the road into a very heavily wooded area. i got to tell you, these two men are e alive. they're in the hospital at this hour with some serious injuries. >> plane crash at tipton airport. 7500 general aviation drive out of airfield road. >> chopper 4 shows the wreckage of a small plane that went down in the woods short takeoff in the laurel area. this anne arundel picture shows them pulling victims from the debris. two men, one in his 50s and one in his 80s were seriously hurt. >> they were conscious and talking? >> they were communicating to the rescuers on scene. >> the single engine plane had just taken off at 2:00 in the afternoon from fort meade. faa officials are investigating

but it's too soon to say what caused the crash. authorities are not saying which man was at the controls or where they were going. >> if there were witnesses, i'm sure the maryland state police faa will be communicating with them to gather any information they may have. >> the plane landed on its top off the runway. there are no homes in the area. >> we're glad they didn't suffer more severe injuries. they were rushed in helicopters to shock trauma in baltimore. they are expected to survive. the good news here the plane did not catch fire. >> reporter: and this on-scene investigation is expected to last well into the night tonight. chris? >> all right, darcy. you mentioned that this was a heavily wooded marshy area. how did rescuers get to the crash site? >> reporter: that's right, chris. you could tell from that video, it was very difficult to reach that area. it was right off the runway of the tipton airfield here in the fort meade area.

but, again, they had to get in there to get to to that wreckage very quickly. fortunately, they have specialized teams that respond to these sorts of incidents. they got social security tans from prince george's county and other counties. they brought in equipment as well as suvs. you need the four-wheel drive vehicles. they brought in the four-wheel drive vehicles and gators. they got the heavy equip got to the victims and got them off to the hospital. again, they are going to survive this horrible crash. chris, back to you. >> great work darcy. investigators have not released the names of the people on board. we did some digging and learned who that ps registered to. records show it is thomas lighten cline. he owns the aa 1 aircraft. that he lives in silver spring.

in annapolis. 46 in leesburg. frederick, hagerstown and martinsburg will see highs in the low to mid-40s. not only cooler but showers as well tomorrow. i'll have the latest timing in ten minutes. >> looki forward to that. someone abandoned four dogs in annapolis and left them in a crate by the side of the road. now, police are trying to track down their owners. a driver spotted the dogs on can narrow road. they couldn't pinpoint the exact location. another person ended up taking the dogs home to keep them safe. she posted something on social media and police picked them up. they're in protective custody but will be put up for adoption. in d.c. authorities are investigating how a woman died in a centrall block. she was found der holding cell this morning. they think she committed suicide. she was arrested yesterday on a misdemeanor charge of of property. college basketball lost a

legend today. the long-time coach of the north carolina tar heels passed away. dean smith is dead at the age of 83. reaction is pouring in from across the country. jason pugh joins us with details. >> dean smith changed the way basketball is coached and played. he was an innovator during his 36 years as head coach at north carolina. he won two national titles and 11 final four appearances. smith coached a long list of great players throughout his time at chapel hill. like michael jordan and sam perkins. he was the first coach to integrate the acc. the hall of famer also affected the lives of many coaches, including mark tur john who gave his thoughts on dean smith. >> probably what i appreciate the most what a great person he was. as you get older in life that's really more important than being the coach and winning games. and that's probably where he's had the biggest influee on me more than anything. so it's a sad day.

but it only took one look at their cars to see someone had slashed their tire derrick ward shows us the damage in congress heights. >> that tire was fully inflated when the car was parked last night around midnight. obviously something happened overnight. the same thing must have happened to this car and this one and this one too. >> not a coincidence, i don't think. >> no. someone did a number on the tires of th street in southeast. one resident noticed their tires were cut and flagged down a passing police officer. that's when it was clear. >> from house to house, to let us know that our tires had be slashed. >> about 4:00 this morning, the police knocked on my door and i didn't know what -- when he said the police. i have kids. i was worried about one of my kids. >> the tires were punctured in a way that a patch job may not fix. along the side wall. >> for someone to come down and pretty much go in everybody's pocket. >> he gave his neighbor a hand and tended to his own tires.
