here is a live look. no snow but could you still see travel problems. and we'll tell you what students are doing in n. montgomery county in hopes of getting a little more shut eye. first, it is 5:00 a.m.. good morning. welcome to news 4 today for this monday february 9. let's take a live look outside right now. we will see some rain today. let's get right to tom. >> yes, we are starting off with a few scattered sprinkles mainly west of the metro area. this is associated with the big storm hitting new england, but we're onm sid wee seeing just scattered sprinkles western maryland panhandle of west virginia. closer to washington a couple of these near gaithersburg and reston.

this is tracking off to the east just maybe brief sprinkle over the next hour or so. as we start off this morning, we have these clouds passing over the petro area. just maybe light fog in the rural areas. your morning headlines for this monday afternoon showers looking likely. scattered rain showers during the afternoon. then a big change in to the weekend. our maybe coldest weather of the season so far coming up this weekend. right now we're above freezing. mid to upper 30s to near 40 degrees. next weather and traffic on the 1s chuck bell joins us live with you forecast for this monday. melissa, how is the commute? overall no major problems right now. 66 east between the toll road and westmoreland we have the left lane blocked. supposed to be until 5:00 a.m.. it's sticking around right now. we'll keep you updated. wide look at things overall beltway looking pretty good. everything moving and nice and

green. prince george's county, branch avenue pennsylvania avenue indian head highway, everything moving along. no reports of construction there. 95 in maryland in and out of town looking just fine. same thing bw parkway. colesville road and then of course the top of the beltway here moving along quite nicely. 270 at montrose no issues there. the camera just froze. i'm back at 5:11 with a live picture of 66. speaking of freezing, right now a massive winter storm bearing down on new england as we speak. take a look at the live conditions in boston right now. 17 degrees there and snowing as you can see in this picture. mounds of snow already on the ground there to boot. this storm expected to dump up to 2 feet of snow over the next few days. schools in boston are closed today and tomorrow. this is the third straight monday on which this area has been hammered with snow. massachusetts governor charlie

baker says in the past few weeks, more than 60 inches of snow has fallen in parts of his state. now, at airports in our area you could find yoursel prett lines before meg apmeg ans liv at airpor >> rep and w expecting a ripple effect. airport operations just getting up way this morning here at reagan national but we are expecting a difficult day for people who are traveling to the new england area because of the snowstorm clobbering cities like boston. we're seeing 280 cancellations out of boston same thick out of laguardia and new york. here on the board, we're seeing cancellations here. we don't have any snow but what we're seeing is this ripple effect. you can see all of the cancellations out of la guardia. i counted 18 listed just right now here on the board at reagan national. and there are many more

cancellations througho the day. reagan national 49 flights have been canceled so far.x ds listed. bwi has 14 cancellations. and 8 delays. dulles 11 cancellations and a couple of delays. and of course as the snowstorm starts to really kick in and starts to clobber areas like boston we're expecting even more cancellations to come down range just because they're moving the flights out of the snowy areas, they don't want their planes to get socked in. so cancellations will just continue to stack up. airlines have waived their change fees. so if you have to change your plans, you will not have to pay those fees. but it may be difficult for you to find another flight because there have been so many canc there are not a lot of seats out there. and the snowstorm will be with us for two days so it could be pretty tough to travel over the

next couple of days. megan mcgrath, news 4. it is now 5 0k 5. students will hold a sleep-in demonstration in hopes of convincing montgomery bod to change start time. students and parents will wear pajamas and camp outside of the rockville offices. the demonstration is set to start at 3:30. this is all ahead of tomorrow's responsible vote on changing the bell times. the proposal is on let high school students to start later in the day. the ntsb is working to find out exactly what went wrong in a plane crash in maryland and we're now hearing from a pilot who saw the crash happen. you can see first responders wheres plane went down by tipton airport in anne arundel county. it had just taken off with a pilot and his 82-year-old passenger e pilot waiting on the runway said it didn't clear the trees.

this rocket scheduled to be shot into deep space today. spacex is shooting it sky ward to s gps signals. yesterday a glitch disrupted tracking equipment just minutes before liftoff. they will try again about 6:00 tonight. two northern california communities have been emptied out this morning because of a massive wildfire. the so-called round fire has burned 7,000 acres and destroyed four homes. p the at one point the fire was being fueled by 75 mile-per-hour winds. rained moved in over the weekend and is giving much needed help. four firefighters have been hurt. so hitting record highs over the weekend, we're heading in the opposite direction. so sad. >> it was a nice little break. first, though, we are going to have to deal with a little rain today. let's go to chuck bell on the weather deck with a look at what you can expect at the bus stop. >> reporter: good morning.

>> storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein now with more on what we can expect in the day ahead. tom, good morning. >> we can say good-bye to our spring tease that we had yesterday. got into the 60s in the metro area. a few scattered light sprinkles off to west showing up on radar. spectacles of green here in west virginia up into pennsylvania panhandle of west virginia, northern shenandoah valley getting a few scattered sprinkles there. closer to washington, one little sprinkle there near wheaton and coming into silver spring. the steadier rain is still way off to our north and west as a weak front does come on through this afternoon. we'll likely get a greater chance of some of the showers moving on through. it's all above freezing now, we're in the mid to upper 30s shenandoah valley and into the mountains, low 40s. around the metro area upper 30s near 40, near 40 away the bay. northern neck eastern shore. morning commute, most roads will be dry. upper 30s.

most roads will be wet during the afternoon as we'll be hovering in the mid-40s by late afternoon and we'll have a few of these late rain showers continuing into the evening hours. here is the timing on any rain coming in by noon still just pok. then a few sca rain shows these patches of green, moving in by around 3:00 p.m.. and then by 5:00 to 6:00, maybe steadier larger areas of just some light rain moving across northern virginia, the district and maryland. this patch of pink is sleet way up near the pennsylvania bo. and then most ending by 11:00 p.m. and we'll have the rain crossing the eastern shore by late tonight and all of this ending and gone by dawn on tuesday. and we'll be down to the low thirt by then. highs only in the low 40s tomorrow blustery wind. it's back to winter. and then on wednesday, partly cloudy a bit milder reaching the mid to upper 40s after a

granted a trial. another woman is accusing bill cosby of inappropriate behavior, coming just before cosby decided to cancel a show in boston last night. former fashion model helen gumpel said he made sexual advances and lewd gestures toward her on the set of the cosby show. at least 15-year-old have accused him of sexual assault. he has denied the allegations and never been charged with a crime. right now a 16-year-old in pennsylvania is in jail charged with killing another teenager and then taking a selfie with the body. this happened in western pennsylvania about an hour outside of pittsburgh. police say the teenager sent the picture to a friend. he's now facing first-degree murder cha an adult in this case. 5:35. in a few hours, a group of d.c. residents are protest a utility merger. exelon planning to purchase pepco for more than $6 billion. at noon the d.c. power coalition

in just a few hours, terry mcauliffe is expected to make a major economic announcement impacting northern virginia. this comes as lawmakers are working on the state budget. richard jordan is live with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the big announcement here not only will it affect hospital staffers, but countless people throughout the region. governor terry mcauliffe and e know nova ceo will announce that it is expanding taking over the parking lot across the street. exxon is moving to houston and that means that just under 120 acres will be available. the hospital plans to use that property to create a medical campus that will focus on genomics and cancer research. that big announcement from the

hospital. and yesterday the virginia generals is l.assembly announced a pay increase to government workers. could see according to one proposal a 1.5% to 3% increase in their salary during the 2015 fiscal now, mcauliffe also asking the general assembly for more money to bring new businesses to virginia. it looks like he's not going to get all the money that he's asking forks but there is funding in the proposed budget for that as well. reporting live this morning in falls church richard jordan news 4. in maryland, governor hogan will meet with the state's speaker of the house this week. both the speaker and the state senate majority leader are democrats. hogan says that he wants to discuss bipartisan efforts with them after his state of the state address last week. democrats criticized that speech saying it sounded more like a campaign address. the post says state republicans applauded what the governor said. i'm angie goff at the live desk. this developing story out of

australia. we know a surfer is dead after a shark attack. this was on the country's east coast. a 41-year-old japanese man was sitting on his board waiting for a wave when witnesses say that the shark came from behind him and attacked him grabbed part of his board and both of the man's legs. his friends rushed him to shore, but it was too late. now, this happened just 12 miles from where another attack happened this weekend and officials are saying that they believe both of these attacks are connected. 5:48 right now. pennsylvania mall is planning to crack down on unsupervised teens on the weekends. a 17-year-old is accused of shooting three people at the monroeville monday all side pittsburgh saturday might. two people suffered critical injuries. the third person shot is in stable condition. that mall plans to enforce a new policy banning unaccompanied minors on weekend nights. anyone under 18 will have to be with a parent or guardian on fridays and saturdays. ovechkin is getting a new car but he won't be using it.

and then east of there, just maybe a light rain drop in southern montgomery county, northern prince george's county w and parts of northern virginia loudoun county getting a few of those sprinkles moving on in. here is the timing on any steadier rain. it will arrive here this afternoon. but to our west, a few scattered light sprinkles the areas in green where we may get some rain. but then it does start to fill in and broader area of rain begins to move in this is as of 3:00 prn.m.. northern western suburbs and the mountains by 3:00 p.m.. after that, most of the rain is just south of the metro area. this area in pink along the pennsylvania border that may be a little bit of freezing rain or sleet during the latter part of the afternoon and into the early evening hours. then a broader area of that rain changes east southern maryland, eastern shor and our eastern suburb northern suburbs. most of northern virginia still getting rain by mid to late evening. by 11:00, most of it is done and

morning, this is gunston cove east of lorton. you can see all the ice still on the potomac river even though we were in the 60s yesterday. of course stay off the ice and warn your kids. then tomorrow a blustery wind. morning lows low 30s. afternoon highs low 40s. and then back in to the upper 40s on wednesday and partly cloudy. might get a few scattered flurries on thursday. then the big change frigid weather arrives on friday into the weekend. probably not even getting above freezing. teens in the morning near 30 in the afternoons. might have light snow on saturday. then sunday back on sunday. melissa here now looking at traffic slowing down. and hearing in my ear we have a metro delay. there is the green line between branch and naylor. single tracking there. taking a look at 95 in virginia headed through dale city that is a slow spot there. it opens up once you hits the
