area where shuttle buses could reach them. you can see some of the incredible pictures from the northeast on our website. just search storm. now close to home and the latest on the chaos we told you about all morning out of montgomery county. >> the suspect in a standoff with police in silver spring is now dead. news4's pat collins has been live at the scene since the barricade started. pat, what can you tell us now? >> reporter: pat, that's where it happened that landscape yard over there. an outburst by an employee that had dely consequences. they say he came to work angry, that he came to work with a gun, and in the end, he turned it on himsel cops with long guns at the ready. large armored vehicles moved into position. a portion of brookfield road in silver spring looked like a war zone.

the scene of the standoff, a gigantic mountain of mulch at a landscape company. witnesses say an employee here came to work and that he was angry, and that he acted on it. >> this male subject, who was an employee of the business arrived to work he seemed upset and agitated. at one point he left the business went to his vehicle, and retrieved a shotgun. he pointed it at one employee and then shot a round into a mulch pile nearby. >> reporter: i talked to a landscape worker who was there when the shot was fired. he asked that we not show his face. >> it was scary. sir, i don't care i don't care if we die, you know? i got two children. sometimes the guy, very good guy, but i don't know what his problem today. >> reporter: the standoff lasted about four hours. nearby streets closed off. the suspect burrowed into the mulch to conceal himself from the police.

they say there were conversations between the cops and the man, but then, then came that ended it all. >> at approximately 12:16, they did hear a shot and had determined that he ended his life there. >> reporter: coming up at 5:00 more from the witnesses, the suspect who saw-- man who saw the suspect arrive at the scene, who saw the shot and called 911 for help. live in montgomery county, k doll pat collins, news4. local students and parents are rallying for later start sleep-in wearing pajamas. a gathering called save our sleep is at rockville. the school board is expected to hold a final vote on school start times tomorrow. news4's chris gordon is at that rally and we'll have a full report at 5:00. isis just released a new propaganda tape using a british

since 2012. six high-level bosses left last month, but some members of congress said the changes hadn't gone far enough and set a hearing for this thursday. it was postponed after smith resigned. an alert shopper is credit getting credit for helping fairfax county police catch a crook. nathaniel henry of temple hills is akutzed of credit card forgery. police political analy say he was uploading fake credit card information onto blank gift cards and using them. police arrested henry in the parking lot of a mt. vernon area shopping center. he was waiting for folks expected to shop with those cards. a shopper who noticed the suspicious activity alerted police. nounusual crime scene. smashed glass and stolen kittens. this happened around 11:00 this morning. someone broke the plexiglas at the petco in columbia heights. two-line 3-month-old kittens were stolen. they are brother and sister brown tabby cats. they were put up for adoption from last chance animal rescue.

police are still looking for a suspect now, and there is also a $500 reward now if the kittens are returned. new numbers from the centers for diseasl show the measles outbreak is far from over. there were 121 cases between january 1st and february 6th. that's up from 102 reported a week ago. and measles cases have now spread to 17 states and the di up from 14 a week ago. 103 of the current cases are linked to the disneyland outbreak in california. local lawmakers in a standoff with capitol hill. what's at stake in a debate that's unprecedented for our area. a small town thrust into the spotlight. why it could be difficult to try a case that's still earning big bucks tat-box office. feel like luck is on your side? first at 4 today, where you might be able to earn some cash while

i'm wendy rieger at the live desk. incredible video to show you, a fire in montgomery county of a work van. this is a work van that was ignited on moony drive in gaithersburg this afternoon. that's right across the street from the t.w. perry building supply company. firefighters were able to get things under control, but investigators say the van and all that equipment inside was destroyed. firefighters don't know how it started. back to you. a warning from d.c.'s attorney general today, forced changes to a planned public hearing on marijuana. the district's top lawyer warned city council members they could face fines and possible jail time if they went ahead with the hearing so, the council held what it called a roundtable discussion. cong has passed a spending prohibition on the district and the attorney general feared lawmakers could face contempt charges. news4's tom sherwood has reaction tonight at 5:00. if the gamble of an on-time flight is not enough for you, slots could be coming to one of our local airports. the maryland general assembly has drafted a plan to add 3,000

parents will have to be with teenagers who visit this shopping center near pittsburgh at least for now. the monroeville mall announced the strict new policy after three people were injured in a weekend shooting. by the end of the month, anyone under 18 who visits the mall has to be escorted by a parent or guardian on friday and saturday nights. there will also be more police on hand. police have charged a 17-year-old boy with opening fire inside macy's. "american sniper" is now the highest grossing war movie of all time.

determine his fate. the judge anticipates seati jury by tomorrow evening. if that schedule holds, opening statements would begin wednesday morning. live in stephenville jim gray. back to you. turning to the weather, it's been wet out there today. what's rush hour looking like? this rush hour is fine. we just have a few wet roads. tights morning rush tomorrow that we have to worry about with slick l for icy spots. so let's head to the weather wall and get you updated on temperatures. yes, we're above freezing across the area with some light showers falling. it's not the chance of anything freezing until we get late into the evening hours around 11:00 p.m. to midnight that freezing rain possible with your temperature dropping from the mid and upper 30s at 7:00 to the low 30s by 11:00 p.m. so if you're going out this evening it's not until late temperatures well above freezing across the area 33 though low spot there, annapolis as well as camp springs. but generally even 40s to the

south and west. we've got showers on the radar, a couple of clusters around winchester i-81 areas of frederick and leesburg and south of d.c. around waldorf just north of leonardtown so spotty areas of rain but, again, above freezing. i think the kids at brookhaven elementary in rockville, maryland thanks for having me out today. great weather talk today. they even asked questions about careers in weather and about the long-range forecast too. i can tell you looking ahead to the overnight period your road impacts, freezing rain chance comes late. our best chance of seeing that freezing rain move through will be between about 7:00 p.m. but i think worst conditions on area roads 11:00 p.m. till 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we can see a trace of ice possible. again, that will be even the areas south of d.c. where a little bit of snow could start setting up. let me show you the future weather. here is 7:00 this evening, frederick and mt. airy up toward baltimore, for freezing rain in the pink. by the time we get to 9:00, still mainly to the north,

howard county montgomery county that's the reason the winter weather as are there. most of the moisture and showers after midnight d.c. areas south and east through areas of maryland then i think by 5:00 6:00 7:00 8:00 in the morning this could all end down here southern maryland has a little bit of light snow. again, we could see those advisories extended a little further south. by the afternoon, we're partly sunny. your temperatures going up into the low and mid-40s across the area maybe 46 around fredericksburg 44 in town 40 degrees frederick and around 41 to germantown under still a mostly cloudy sky for tomorrow afternoon. from the mid-40s tuesday, wednesday to another chance for some light snow on thursday. we're going to talk about this system a little more and what happens after that. a lot of cold air will start to move in. wait till you see the temperatures that we've got coming up for the weekend. valentine's day. and, yes, there is the potential

inova fairfax is acquiring the former exxonmobil headquarters building. that's in the maryfield area, and will be transforming it into a sent that are provides cutting-edge care and research. here's news4's megan mcgrath. >> reporter: the 117-acre campus has been home to exxonmobil's corporate headquarters. but in the coming months the 1.2 million-square-foot complex will be transformed into a state-of-the-art healt campus using cutting-edge technology and research in genomics. doctors will look at a patient's dna and personally tailor their medical treatment. >> that ability to look at your gene sequence and target your therapy is the unique thing that we're frankly already extremely good at and we're on our way to being best in the world. >> reporter: 2-year-old zachary has image syndrome and has benefited fist hand from such personalized treatment. >> he was given medicine during one of his surgeries, he's had a

couple surgeries, and because of the research they were able to identify a hormone he needed to have on site and with them during the surgery. and i think it could have potentially been life saving. >> reporter: called the inova center for personalized health the campus will be home to the translation nal medicine institute and the comprehensive cancer and research institute. acquiring the property is just the first step. when the doors eventually open governor terry mcauliffe says it's going to bring jobs and economic growth to fairfax. >> this is going to translate into thousands and thousands of high-paying jobs here in virginia. >> reporter: acquiring the exxonmobil site is a huge step but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done and a lot of money that needs to be raised. the folks here at inova hope they'll be able to open the cancer center by late 2017. in fairfax, megan mcgrath news4. it's a testament to the healing power of nature. today the first lady michelle

obama, and five former first ladies voiced their support for creating the first-ever healing garden at children's hospital in northwest. the 7,000-square-foot guard season now under development and will replace a gravel rooftop. it will provide not only green space but art and music. the idea of a healing garden was inspired by a young patient whose last wish was just to go outside. there is new evidence that children and energy drinks should not mix. it could raise their risk of adhd. new research by yale researchers surveyed a group of middle school students. those who drank more heavily sweetened energy drinks were 66% more likely to become hyperactive or inattentive compared to other kids. it was especially true for boys. however, the study did not prove the drink themselves -- the drinks themselves caused the problems. tonight marks the 27th gathering of a group that would like to never meet again, the maryland network against domestic violence holds its annual memorial service tonight in annapolis.

the group will pay tribute to 54 women, men, and children who died from domestic violence in maryland between 2013 and july of 2014. case dismissed. carolina panther defensive end greg hardy is no longer facing domestic abuse charges pap d.a. in north carolina says the nfl player reached an agreement with hitz accuser. hardy was accused of attacking and threatening a former girlfriend. duri the ordeal he was on the nfl exempt list meaning he was paid but couldn't practice in team activities and participate word yet on his future with the panthers. commuting is tough no matter who you ask. it rarely goes the way you want it to go. but for a certain type of metro passenger, it's a y e because of what many of you may be doing without even realizing it. tisha thompson is here with more on her next news4 i team investigation. tish >> we got an e-mail from a viewer about what it's like for some of metro's most loyal

welcome back to news 4 at on a soggy, chilly monday afternoon. >> yep, some of us are under a winter weather advisory. storm team 4 keeping a close eye on whoitis going to impact the most. our team coverage begins with meteorologist veronica johnson. v.j.? >> yeah guys those advisory just north of d.c. and some go as late as 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. so you're going to see in just a moment which areas we think will be most problematic. for the evening and for tomorrow morning. we're at 37 degrees now. yes, we have showers moving through the area and enough wind where it's chilling us down. we've got a windchill at 30 degrees, so some areas a little bit of wind pushing through the area but the wind calms more our temperatures will get a chance to drop below freezing

and stay there for several storm team 4 radar, you can see the blue showing up and the green. that's rain showers. right up here northern areas of baltimore county arnold southern areas of hartford county already a little bit of mix precip trying to show up, a little bit of sleet and freezing rain already trying to get going. i think we'll see more of that until after 7:00 p.m. this evening. so here's a look at the temperatures. at 7:00 p.m. this evening, below freezing right at freezing in d.c. fredericksburg down south around stafford too, at 32 degrees. then early tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. through 8:00 a.m. everywhere below freezing. so whatever is lef this weather system will i think be freezing up and causing some issues on area roads. we start this evening with the first little wave that will be right up here. that's where we could see some sleet at times mixing in with the rain so it's areas like northern areas of montgomery county around germantown. meanwhile, by tomorrow morning
