in. first tonight, a local man sentenced to prison after admitting to collecting images of young girls for nearly 40 years. >> according to court documents, he stole photos of children at a photo lab where he worked and made video recordings. >> reporter: they found vialism manuals of children having sex erica lived next door to him. he pled guilty to child p ochl rn charges but used his job at a photo lab to collect pictures of

local kids. when he saw a child in a photo from a customer that he liked, he made a copy for himself. he recorded young girls that came into the store and copied those videos to dvds and stalked some one of the most family friendly places in d.c. >> he would stop in over the weekend and i'm like where you are off to? he's going to the zoo. i thought he liked taking pictures. >> reporter: that he did. >> i saw him taking a tripod with him to the zoo. >> reporter: martin told police he's been collecting images since 1977. he was sentenced today to more than seven years in prison. now, earlier tonight, a few hours ago, we reached out to cbs. as martin has not worked for him

since 2016, they are looking into the details of this and it should be noted, in times past just a few years ago, a d.c. man was convicted on child porn charges after a cvs employee noted that he was trying to printout images and reported it to the police. >> thanks, chris. a developing story now. "60 minutes" correspondent bob simon has been killed in manhattan. we're told he was in a town car that hit another vehicle. simon and the driver were taken to a hospital. simon was pronounced dead. he was 73 years old. now to new details in the hotel homicide in downtown d.c. tonight, police released new surveillance video of the person inside the donovan where a local attorney was found stabbed to death.

shomari stone is live. >> reporter: police hope this surveillance video can help with a lead or a tip in this case. they don't know if the man or woman you're about to see on camera is a man or woman. they are calling this person a person of interest and they are hoping they can help solve this murder mystery. take taking a look at the surveillance video, police want to talk to him about the murder of a d.c. lawyer found stabbed to death inside his fourth floor hotel room. tonight, a neighbor reads a statement. >> we are deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of our beloved son and brother. we have no further comments at this time. >> reporter: police don't know if the person is a man or woman. he's appearing to cover his or her face. the elevator button is pushed twice and then the person

decides to take the stairs. the face is no longer covered. seconds later, the face is covered. police collected evidence from the scene. police chief says his family reported him missing 24 hours before his body was found. >> we know that the victim in that case had been reported missing by family. i believe about 24 hours before. >> reporter: he and his wife lived in a condo on capitol hill around 20 blocks away from the donovan hotel. he was an attorney for dla piper, llc, a law firm specializing in intellectual property. now, police want anyone with information, if you recognize the person of interest in that video, they want to hear from you. we posted it on our website at nbcwashington.com. i'm shomari stone, news 4. it's going to get really

really cold around here. am i right, doug? >> you are right. you're going to wake up tomorrow and you think serving going to be okay and then tomorrow afternoon you'll walk out from work and man it's going to hit you like a ton of bricks. temperatures today into the 40s. 47 in d.c. 45 in frederick. now, what if i told you tomorrow at this time these temperatures would be 40 degrees colder? that's right. that puts us around 7 degrees in d.c. at this time tomorrow night. at least that's the windchill. so not too cold early. temperatures falling quickly and winds will be gusting to 35 miles an hour during the day. we're talking about the windchills falling into the single digits by around 8:00 9:00 10:00. days in the 20s. six last winter. the next seven days i expect three. we'll talk about that more coming up. >> thank you, doug. the orange and silver lines are back up and running tonight.

about 2:00 this afternoon there were trains still single tracking but they did not stop. passengers were directed to shuttle buses. the station was closed for more than an hour. metro's ventilation system did not work the way it was supposed to during the deadly underground smoke emergency last month at the metro stop. instead of pushing the smoke out of the tunnel, fans in the system pulled the smoke towards the passengers in the train. that's according to the ntsb. the train itself drew smoke inside because its ventilation was not turned off. today, the ntsb recommended that all transit agencies throughout the country test their ventilation systems. >> when we make an urgent recommendation it's because we have already, even though we haven't completed the investigation, we have seen there's a problem in this area and the problem needs to be addressed immediately. >> tomorrow marks one month since the incident at the plaza

station. the metro board meets tomorrow and this investigation is likely to be on the agenda. a tragedy in frederick county. a popular teenager died behind the wheel of her suv as she was headed to high school. she crashed into a school bus traveling in the opposite direction. knight died on the scene. the bus driver and a student on the bus went to the hospital with minor injuries. officers say that knight was not using her phone at the time of the crash. a legal victory for the d.c. police chief tonight. the jury in a whistleblower trial ruled in cathy lanier's favor. he claims he was demoted after publicly contradicting the chief about the practice of police escorts for celebrities. but chief lanier claims that he was demoted because of poor job

performance. both sides accuse the other of not telling the truth. >> the real story here for captain burton was he was demoted and he tried to use misinformation to distract everybody from that. >> at the time i testified before the city council, i truly believe that the chief had lied to all of you, to the public of the district of columbia and i still believe that. >> this started in 2011 when actor charlie sheen got a police escort from dulles airport and tweeted about it. a bill the president has threatened to veto is now headed to his desk. the house passed legislation approving construction of the keystone oil pipeline. while republicans say the pipeline will create jobs critics say it's bad for the environment and will do little for our economy. congress could approve the request for military force against isis. the president unveiled his request to the public today.

a dramatic end to a high-speed police chase in texas this afternoon. the suspect violently rammed the vehicles from behind and one of the passengers didn't take kindly to that. they got out,car, threw the guy to the ground just before police were able to get there and arrest him. a teenager in the minivan was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. people call it the silent killer. it has hit local families several times already this year and carbon monoxide poisoning kills hundreds of people every year. tonight's consumer reporter erica gonzalez walks through how to keep your family safe. >> reporter: high levels of carbon monoxide are being ee emitted into your home. get out. if you don't have a sounding

winchester and by 11:00 tomorrow night, 4 in washington 3 in martinsburg and it stays that way through friday morning. windchills between 3 and 3 below zero. we're really talking about colder air. that's between the winds and the winds gusting. if the winds are gusting, we get down below 10 or 15 below zero. even around noon on friday. we're still on the single digits to the low teens. so yeah we've got big-time cold air making its way through here. 40 degrees with falling temperatures maybe flurries or a quick snow shower. high of 28 on friday. again, light snow likely on saturday with a high of 42 and then on sunday 21. we're even colder on sunday. i think windchills on sunday may stay below 0 all day long in most areas, especially you folks
