blowing in and then a frigid pattern develops by tomorrow and continues all the way into next week. next weather and traffic on the 1s a look at the hour by hour temperature plunge for the next 24 hours. 6:01. breaking news in hyattsville. a water main break will impact your drive to work. there is a hole in the middle of east-west highway. melissa mollet will have your alternate route coming up. all westbound lanes are closed on east-west highway between al adelphi. megan mcglathkcgrath is live. >> reporter: wssc has been able to shuts off the water. but what we do have take a look at this we have a large crack right smack in the center of the roadway. the water coming from that broken 10 inch water main, it kicked up the asphalt by several inches in this one area. and it's kind of a big stretch

there. and then on the other side more where i'm standing it actually dropped things down. so there is a bit of an indentation in the road. so they're worried that that water that was gushing from the broken pipe eroded the earth beneath the asphalt. so they were trying to open a right hand lane. they had some cones out. they were taking a close look at it hoping to open some westbound lanes. but they have decided not to do that. they're waiting for a crew to come on the scene to take a closer look to see if it's safe to allow traffic across even the right hand lane here. so at the moment, all westbound lanes of east-west highway are closed. that crew is not here yet, so it will be a while before they can assess whether or not they can open a lane or two here. so it is going to have a big impact on rush hour. eastbound lanes are open, but melissa, this is a big commuter route. >> it is a big mess. best thing you can to is probably take route 1 to avoid this all together. because that will be there for

today the ntsb will show us the damaged third rail from last month he's smoke emergency. instead of pushing smoke out of the tunnel, fans pulled the smoke in toward the passengers. the train drew smoke inside as well because its ventilation was not turned off. the ntsb says all transit agencies nationwide should test their ventilation systems immediately. metro issued its report another small fire broke out on the tracks near courthouse station in arlington. trains had to single track through that station. they did not stop. passengers were evacuated from the platform and directed to

shuttle buses. the station was closed for more than an hour. 6:17. this morning we're learning more about a montgomery county map who used his job to collect child pornography. 58-year-old marion lee martin was sentenced to 7 years. he said he used his job at cvs photo lab to collect pictures of local child. when he saw a photo in a customer's order that he liked, he'd make a copy for himself. he also used his cell phone to take videos of young girls walking through cvs. >> he was taking a tripod with him to the zoo. never knew. >> martin told police he recorded girls it at the national zoo in 2013 at his home. investigators found tens of thousands of pictures and videos that martin had been collecting since 1977. in d.c. a rabbi accused of videotaping women at a religious

bath will be in court next week. inging barry freundel could take a plea deal. six women are suing him. we're told prosecutors met with them to talk about a possible deal last night. this morning we're working to learn the terms of that deal. post to the nbc washington app as soon as we find out what it is. counselors will be at middletown high school this morning after a student died in a car crash. 17-year-old claire knight was on her way to school yesterday when they are suv collided with a school bus. she was driving north. the bus driver and one student on board suffered minor injuries. officers say knight's cell phone was in her pocket at the time of the crash, so she was not texting. today funeral services will be held for rick warrick, he was hit and killed while changing a tire. his fiance was also hit, but survived. the driver did not stop after hitting the couple.

warrick's viewing begins at 9:00 a.m. at the matthew memorial baptist church in southeast. that crash also led to the reassignment of an anne arundel county dispatcher after he told warrick warrick's daughter to stop whining during the 911 call. bowie state university is taking steps to bridge the gap. a town hall event will include law enforcement from campus police all the way up to maryland state police. there will be a vigil that includes students and officers followed by an open forum where the two sides can ask each other questions. it starts tonight at 6:00. bob simon has been killed in a car crash in new york city. this happened last night on west side highway. we're told he was a passenger in a town car that hit another vehicle. the roof of the car had to be cut off to remove simon and the driver. both were taken to the hospital. simon died on the way. he was 73 years old. new this morning, a former korean air executive will spend a year in prison for having a

tantrum on a plane because she was served macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a plate. the daughter of korean air's chairman achieved worldwide notoriety after she ordered the chief flight attendant off a december flight forcing to return for the gate at jfk airport. 6:20. this is just mind blowing. this morning we're hearing about one woman's incredible survival story. she was driving along the california coast when she lost control of her pickup truck and careened right off a cliff. debbie lopez says she found herself upside down in her truck saturday night. she managed on get her seat belt off and she realized she had damaged rib, cuts and bruises. monday she finally got the strength to climb through her windshield. >> and i knew at that point i had to get myself out. i had to see my husband and my family. just wanted to go home. >> wow. saturday to monday. and that was just the beginning. it took her almost two days to climb straight up that cliff back to the road.

who is live on the scene. >> reporter: we just got here and take a look behind me at what you see. the house where the fire started, nothing but a charred mess. only the chimney standing. i got a chance to speak to some neighbors who say the homeowner is in the hospital but was already in the hospital when this fire started. firefighters still working on this house. i can still see some flames behind the smoke. and right next door there is a home that has been impacted by this fire. firefighters are working on this home. p a neighbor tells me a 78-year-old woman inside that home heard an explosion, she was able to get out. shaken up by the xt the explosion that she heard. not sure the cause as the investigation hasn't even gub begun you because they're still trying to put all the flames out. we did see a washington gas truck on the scene.

there is a large presence of firefighters here working to make the area safe again. this is historic mt. rainier, so the neighbors are watching the devastation in their community that is so beloved. back to you. another breaking news story. there is a crack in the medaliddle of east-west highway. aware water main break causing the lanes to be closed. megan mcgrath is live with how long the road will be closed. >> reporter: we'll have to wait and see. you can see behind me that crews are starting to shovel up some of the mud and gravel that is here in the right hand lane. they want to maybe open that labor up, right hand lane, to allow some of the traffic westbound on east-west highway

relieve the congestion. they haven't done it yet. they're working on it. not the moment, all west bundound lanes are closed between 43rd and adelphi road. eastbound you're okay. those lanes are open p. as far as the situation here and how long it will go on, it will be a while. even if they are able to open up one lane the other lanes, the other two lanes to the left, they will be closed for a while. we have a big crack right here in the middle of the road. there was a 10 eventual waterinch water main that burst and kicked up asphalt. and they haven't even begun the work of repairing that. so this will certainly have an impact on traffic, because a big commuter road east-west highway even if they open a lane. >> absolutely. you're right, we will see the slowdowns coming shortly. so again westbound east/west blocked between 43rd and adelphi. best thing just take route 1 all together. taking a look at 95 in and out

the wife of a man accused of killing three college students near the university of north carolina says religion was not the motive for the shootings. last night thousands of unc and nc state and duke students put aside their differences to remember the victims. 46-year-old craig hicks is charged with the murders. many are calling it a hate crime against muslims. but so far police believe the shootings were the result of a parking dispute at an apartment building. 6:36. the council on american islamic relations is holding a vigil today for the victims of that chapel hill shooting. it will be at the dupont circle fountain. it's tonight at 6:30. we're tracking breaking news in prince george's county where firefighters are on the scene of a massive house fire that caused a home to collapse in on itself in the last hour or so. here is a live look at the scene. all you can see is the smoke billowing in the air. the house burned to the ground. molette green is gathering information about what happened.

you have less than a week tone roll in health insurance through the affordable care act marketplace. sunday february 15 is the dead line. so so far, more than 300,000 people have enrolled in health insurance in virginia. today lawmakers will hear evidence to spors a ban on indoor tank. the american cancer society wants a bill to protect minors. it says people who use indoor tanning machines increase their risk of being diagnosed with skin cancer by 59%. the bill has died in the senate for the past three years.

we'll be hovering this way for another couple of hours. and then only briefly get up to near 40 by early afternoon. back to you. breaking news again right now in prince george's county. a major fire in mount are a they're still going. one home is already completely collapsed there. we want to go back out live to molette green. where do things stand now? >> reporter: as far as we know nobody was inside this home when it caught fire and now you can see it has collapsed. there is still smoke coming from that scene. all that remains standing is the chimney. and over next door firefighters actively working inside this house where a woman in her 70s who had just retired neighbors tell me just recently was inside the home. she a woke when she heard an explosion. her house caught fire. firefighters worked very hard to keep it from burning down. back over to the original site where the fire started,

live desk. developing this morning, a cease-fire deal has been reached in eastern ukraine after 15 hours of negotiations between vladimir putin and poroshenko. leaders from france and germany also involved. here is the deal. at midnight on sunday morning cease fire goes in to effect and ukraine has promised to pull back some of the heavy weaponry that is on the border now. they will move it about 30 miles from that border. in exchange, putin says he will get the pro-russian rebels to pull back as well. again, this will all go down this weekend after months of fighting. thousands of people have been killed there in eastern ukraine. 12 before the hour. today we expect to learn about the replacement for chuck hagel as secretary of defense. the senate armed services committee voted unanimously on tuesday to advance ashton carter's nomination.

the board is expected to vote at about 8:30 this morning. and we find out tonight whether prince george's county will keep two elementary schools open. ceo recommended both thomas claggett and ken mooremoor closed. students currently enrolled will be assigned elsewhere. the vote takes place at 7:00 p.m.. today mayorryor bowser will announce a new program to com bass bat homelessness. it will work on finding permanent house. the numbers of hopeless have increased because of lack of affordable housing. in the program families will be paired with a liaison to understand the rental market and can help with the paperwork. a big group of dads is making a real impact on their kids' lives. the school board says nearly 200

road. megan mcgrath is live with the work to get that road back open this morning. >> reporter: just within the last few minutes, we have started to see some traffic getting by to the right. so we are seeing a little bit of an easing in the area with one lane getting by. but the rest of the lanes they are closed because you can see the large crack take we have here right in the center of the roadway. we had 10 inch water main broke and caused the as fult tophalt to kick up. there might be erosion beneath. so this is going to be a while to get fixed and repaired and patch the road. they are, however, allowing that traffic to get by one lane to the right. but this is a busy road. it will be a tough go for folks on this commute. back to you. one last look at the forecast with tom. >> there is a live view of capitol hill under a cloudy sky. it's around 30 degrees. temperatures over the next 24 hours, a tremendous change. maybe up to the low 40s by
