scene. >> it all came to a head in neighboring fairfax county where police stopped the suspects. >> let's go to northern virginia bureau chief julie carey live at the shopping center where it all began. julie? >> reporter: a lot of investigators on the scene at the eastern marketplace plaza where a bold but foiled arm robbery attempt took place about 1:30 this afternoon. it left one of the suspects suffering from serious gunshot wounds. we have pictures of the other suspects being taken into custody. we'll show you those in a while. but it all started in the parking lot of that capital one bank behind me. that's where a dunbar armored truck was parked. the two suspects came um. they were armed, tried to rob the truck, but one of the dunbar drivers return fire. there was an exchange of gunfire, and i think you're seeing some of the video from earlier in this parking lot in order to get away from the gunfire, the dunbar truck drove through the parking lot ended up parking in front of a harris teeter. the two suspects jumped into a

red taurus and took off. a lookout was put out for those suspects and several miles away on the fairfax county parkway, a fairfax county officer saw the car that everyone was looking for, was able to pull it over. we do have pictures now of one of the suspects in that car. they pulled the car over. they discovered that the passenger, one of the suspects was suffering from gunshot wounds. we're told he was shot maybe as many as four times on the saep by one of those armored truck drivers. the driver, the other suspect, was taken into custody without -- he did not fight back at the scene. the injured suspect was fwloun to the hospital where we're told he has life-threatening injuries. as you can see from our video there the other suspect taken into custody over on the fairfax county parkway. vots on the scene trying to piece together what happened here. joining me the sloushg sheriff mike chapman. this is very unusual for loudoun county particularly here in this area. >> it is. in the entire time of being

sheriff i've never seen anything this brazen. it was a distressing situation when you talk about how violent it was and fortunately nobody else besides the suspect was injured in this. >> reporter: you think about open gunfire in this parking lot in the middle of the afternoon. >> absolutely. we actually had great coordination had a key witness that actually saw the suspects identified the car they got into called 911, great coordination between our dispatch fairfax county loudoun county sheriff's office and quick response. we were able to get the car stopped, suspects apprehended. very very good work all the way around. >> thanks for join us. coming up on news 4 at 5:00 we talk with somebody from the dunbar armored truck company. he is very relieved that his colleagues are well tonight. we'll hear from him on news 4 at 5:00. live in south riding julie carey. now to our other big story this afternoon. here comes the cold. >> here we go folks. right now temperatures are falling. the winds are gusting and buckle up this is just the beginning.

the arctic blast is about to set in on us and it's going to last for days. >> we have team coverage this afternoon. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is in the storm -- on the storm team 4 weather deck. let's start with amelia segal, though in the warmth of the weather center. >> some of us will be under a wind advisory this evening into tomorrow morning. tights counties here in blue. frederick, washington carroll countys in maryland frederick county in virginia as well pretty much all of the panhandle of west virginia back through luray. this runs from 7:00 p.m. tonight until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, windchills in those areas as bad as 10 to 15 degrees below zero. right now our temperatures not too bad. we're at 42 degrees, but the winds picked up this afternoon, they're now out of the northwest at 14 miles per hour. gusts obviously higher and with that we send things out to doug on the storm team 4 weather deck. what's it like out there, doug? >> not too bad, but it continues to get worse as the hours go by. our temperatures are going to

continue to go lower. our windchills will continue to go lower. look at the gusts, now gusting to 30 miles per hour in most locations. those winds may increase as we move on through the night tonight. as we move on through the next couple hours, look at our wind gusts, upwards of 37 miles per hour in gaithersburg 32. >>-in leesburg. this is at 11:00 tonight. even by early tomorrow morning, the winds still gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour. amelia that's why we're talking about that storm, making its way through. the bulk of the storm is through the area. now it's the winds and the windchills. windchills tomorrow will be brutal, but this is just the start of what's going to be a very cold next seven days. >> yeah absolutely. we were talking act it today as we were putting the forecast together the coldest air so far this season. as temperatures plummet this evening, and the winds remain strong. look at how it's going to feel. 8:00 p.m. feeling like it's 11 degrees, by midnight only 3. walking the dog tonight it will be very cold. 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, feeling like 2 below. so frigid temperatures when the kids are at their bus stop

exactly how cold it will be in your neighborhood i'll have that forecast coming up in about 10 minutes. >> all right, amelia thank you. doug too. check this out. you know it's cold when the national weather service starts trending on social media with this bitter blast of cold air coming in 33 million people under a windchill advisory or warning. and the cold weather could lead to more headaches for drivers because of water main breaks. a 10-inch main broke this morning in the middle of east/west highway between 43rd and adelphia. road in hyattsville. repairs are expected to last through the evening rush hour. i'm scott mcfarlane at the live desk. this just in maryland state highway officials have ordered immediate inspections of 27 bridges in this state in the wake of and because of an incident that happened tuesday night. this incident, a piece of concrete falling off a capital beltway bridge onto a car on suitland road. the state ordering inspections immediately. over the next few days about 27

bridges of the same age built before 1969 and the same condition as that beltway bridge. that will include a couple bridges on i 270 near urbana near route 85. seminary roads bridge. there are more possible repairs and traffic implications of these inspections if problems are found. 27 bridges in maryland to be expected immediately because of what happened tuesday night over suitland road p at the live desk i'm scott mcfarlane. first at 4, right now we're getting an up-close look at the damaged metro track from that deadly emergency at l'enphant plaza. it comes a month after a woman died when smoke filled her train. news4 transportation reporter adam tuss live outside the l'enphant plaza station now. >> reporter: one month in and for the versus time we're getting an up-close look at the aftermath of what happened here at l'enphant plaza. take a look at the pictures that we shot earlier this afternoon now. this has always been described a

an electrical situation. you might call it a true electrical meltdown as the third rail and section of track that was involved completely charred. the national transportation safety board pointing out some of what they are still studying at their headquarters today. on news 4 at 5:00 you might be surprised to learn that metro is actually talking about raising fares today nap got a lot of people's attention and made some people upset. we'll bring you that story next hour. live at l'enphant plaza, adam tuss news4. the deadly l'enphant incident will be the focus of a hearing on capitol hill tomorrow. lawmakers will look into potential safety gaps on the metro system. among those scheduled to testify a passenger who was on board during last month's smoke incident and gave cpr to the woman who died as well as d.c.'s assistant fire chief and ahead of the washington metropolitan area transportation authority. alcohol fueled a murder that left a virginia family without a father and now the killer has

been convicted. brandon henry faces sentencing in prince william county in may. he entered an alford plea to charges of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of alvin elroy cannon. prosecutors say cannon was trying to break up a fight outside his house in woodbridge last summer when brandon henry stabbed him. police say henry had been drinking. an alford plea does not admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence to convict. a story that's getting a ton of attention on the nbc washington facebook page and it has a lot of folks using facebook and afterlife in the same sentence. wrongs wrighted -- the symbolic move on capitol hill today that involves one of the biggest movements of the civil rights era. and new details emerge what we now know about what happened to the daughter of the late whitney houston in the days before she was rushed to the

jo they suffered violence in the push for civil rights. now members of the house say the selma marchers deserve congressional gold medal.

the house unanimously approved the honor yesterday. back in 1965 police attacked several hundred people in alabama as they marched for voting rights for african-americans. the event is now the subject of the movie "selma" in theaters. senate minority leader harry reid is resting at his d.c. home right now after undergoing eye surgery. reid had a procedure yesterday to help improve his vision. he fell while exercising at home in nevada on new year's day. he also broke ribs and broke bones in his face. a spokesperson for reid says doctors hope to have a better prognosis for his eye in coming days. reid is expected to be back at work on the hill january 23rd after the congressional recess. we have new details coming to the news4 about the personal life of whitney houston's daughter. bobbi kristina brown was in a car crash just days before she was found unresponsive. that's cort a report by the associated press.

brown was behind the wheel on january 27th when she crashed into another car. two people were hospitalized. the ap also says brown's boyfriend found her unconscious about 18 months ago. brown has been on life support since being discovered unconscious in a bathtub on january 31st. it could mean the difference between life and death. we'll tell you about the recall that could save you from flames in your home. and brace yourself. this bitter blast of cold air is just getting started. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal will be back with a look at how cold it will get.

reports about the product's failing to work the way they're supposed to. if you have one of these, call kitta and get a replacement. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal. here's the latest on storm team 4 radar, the last of some light rain and snow showers leaving the area mainly down in southern maryland and the northern neck. this activity pulls away over the next hour. our temperature right now around 40 our wind chis around 35 degrees. but as the sun sets just before 6:00 p.m. that's when our temperatures plummet. so tomorrow morning, it is a brutally cold start. and because of that the weather having a moderate to high impact on your day tomorrow. it's extremely cold tomorrow morning and it remains chilly throughout the entire day on friday. so here's a look at your future feels-like temperatures when you factor in the winds. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning it's feeling about 3 below zero in washington 7 below zero in hegenberger. 9:00 a.m. kids getting on the school bus at that point or

already at school about 5 below in gaithersburg and about 2 degrees in manassas still feeling like temperatures in the single digits around the midday hours tomorrow. at the bus stop make sure the kids have on the warmest jacket the hat, the glove, the scarf. recess probably indoors tomorrow because of the windchill factor we're dealing with. only feeling like temperatures are in the teens by the time school winds down friday afternoon. high temperatures tomorrow in the mid to upper 20s. 27 in washington. but, again, it's breezy throughout the day so it will feel like temperatures are in the teens. saturday valentine's day, we get a break from the windchill but we're dealing with some light snow. so a high of 42. it's a dry start. by noon it's cloudy. then as we get into the evening hours when you have dinner plans, that's when we're tracking some snow. i'm going to be showing you when that snow impacts your neighborhood coming up with future weather in a little bit. but, again, on saturday a high of 42 once we get into saturday night, the winds pick back up the temperatures plummet once again. this is our second shot of cold

air. so on sunday a high temperature of 21 but windy conditions on sunday. we could see winds gusting up to 45 to 50 miles an hour. so look at what it's going to feel like throughout the day on sunday. 8:00 a.m. 15 below zero to 5 below zero. by noon temperatures only feeling like they're around zero and not much better at 4:00 p.m. monday we have presidents' day, a high temperature of 25 degrees. you have those ski, snowboarding plans. it's going to be better by the afternoon, but dangerous temperatures early in the day, so if you have some work to do outside you're hoping to get done on your day off, you might want to push that off a little bit because of the weather, good day to head to our local museums. also keeping a close eye on the storm system, more on that coming up in a little bit. also with future weather showing you the snow potential on valentine's day. pat and jim? >> amelia thanks. ever wonder what happens to your facebook page after you die? well you may not have to give it much thought, but now

second. this is georgia avenue and slygo avenue in silver spring. we've learned there are 50 charn on that school bus and at least two of them have minor injuries. this school bus left slydo creek elementary. we have heard two students may be injured out of the 50 on there. we do not know the extent of those injuries. but georgia avenue and slygo avenue in silver spring there is going to be a problem there for traffic if you go through there this afternoon. we'll keep you posted. back to you. >> their stories have touched millions. the nfl player who's been by his daughter leah's side every step of the way as she fights cancer. >> the courage shown by both devin and leah that was honored in washington. jason pew has their story. >> watching my daughter fight for her life is always a tough thing for a tad to do. my daughter has shown tremendous courage and strength throughout this whole process which held my

welcome back at 4:30 i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. at 4:30 we are staying on top of breaking news right now, two suspects under arrest after an armored car robbery at a shopping center here in chantilly. it's not clear yet if the suspects took anything. >> they were stop and raised a few miles away along the fairfax county parkway. our cameras were the only ones there when the suspects were taken into dust custody. the other was taken with gunshot wounds. julie carey will have an update at the top of the hour. the beginning of an arctic last blast is on its way.

meteorologist amelia segal. just how low are we talking tonight? >> we're talking about low temperatures in the teens and when you factor in the winds it will feel like windchill temperatures are below zero in some spots tomorrow morning. we showed you a live picture outside on our storm team 4 weather deck. satellite and radar also showing breaks in the clouds but it's those breaks those clear skies that are allowing temperatures to plummet as the sun goes down. so right now we're in the 30s and 40s. 42 in washington 34 in gaithersburg and 39 in manassas. a windchill right now around 30 to about 35 degrees. but tomorrow morning it will be frigid. windchills in many spots around or below zero. and that's only the first cold shot. the second cold shot arrives very late saturday. it sticks around sunday and even into parts of monday. through monday we'll have windchills below zero at times and near record cold is possible monday morning, pat. >> all righty.

this cell phone video captured the fire that destroyed a house in mt. rainier this morning. >> officials are still looking for answers to how it all started. news4's megan mcgrath talked with neighbors who witnessed the immensity of this fire. >> this dramatic video taken by a neighbor shows the house on 37th street engulfed in flames. >> the front of the house was just totally -- it's like the flames were coming up the porch and wrapped around top of the house. all you could see was the chimney up top. >> reporter: the commotion woke sleeping neighbors. at fist many were unsure whose house was on fire. >> it was an absolute ball of flames to the point people could not tell whose house it was. i got calls from a couple of the neighborhood people asking whose house was it they couldn't tell. >> reporter: as they pieced together there was a sense of relief. while the destruction was complete neighbors say the man who lives in the house was not home. and the woman who lives next door her house was heavily damaged, but she was able to

escape the flames without injury. while it's hard to look at the damage her son, timothy tillery, is just thankful his mom is okay. >> my mom just retired 30 days ago so, i'm just worried about my mom. she lives alone and this is my whole life right here. >> reporter: investigators spent the morning trying to figure out what happened. but at this point, the cause of the fire is not known. in mt. rainier, megan mcgrath news4. there's a new police station coming to western loudoun county. officials broke ground on the new location in round hill earlier today. the new building will include offices, a community meeting room and a secure area for operations. >> loudoun county sheriffs hope the facility will enhance their ability to serve that area. >> we want to alert you of a new phone scam targeting pepco customers. utility is warning customers tonight about a scam where a caller claims to be from pepco and says pepco no longer serves the customer's area.

then the caller says the customer must provide personal information to open a new account. now, to avoid this scam pepco tells us hang up and call back pepco's customer caroline directly. president obama's request for war powers to expand the fight against isis is creating new battles on capitol hill. republicans are worried it's too limited. democrats are worried it goes too far. namely with boots on the ground. news4's steve handelsman is tracking the debate on capitol hill. steve? >> reporter: pat, thanks. president obama's request for war powers to fight isis that he sent up here at capitol hill strikes a middle ground. he wants limited use of american ground forces for a limited time. his problem is a lot of lawmakers up here want less than that or more. many in congress agree isis is a threat to america. >> we're either going to fight them there or we're going fight them here. >> reporter: but despite the deaths of four americans held by

i isis kayla mueller's made public this week, congress might not okay the obama plan to send american combat forces. many democrats fear that will not be limited as the president promises. >> ground troops if necessary, to take territory will be necessary to hold the territory. >> reporter: look at iraq they say. isis took over cities soon after u.s. forces left. president obama acknowledged what iraq has already cost our nation at an event today to try to reduce the rate of veterans taking their own lives. >> every community, every american can reach out and do more with and for our veterans. this has to be a national mission. >> reporter: but some democrats will not vote to send more americans. >> we have our soldiers coming back committing suicide and for what? >> reporter: the administration says the burden will not be on u.s. forces. >> ground troops are necessary but they aren't going to be american ground troops.

it's a bill that would ban your teens from using indoor tanning twice devices. it was heard before a senate committee this afternoon. a teen showed a pledge of 100 classmates who promised not to use indoor tanning devices. the american cancer society action network is also supporting the bill. the attorneys of the boston marathon bombing suspect are arguing now for the trial to leave massachusetts. they say he can't get a fair

hearing stag emotional impact was so great. the judge has already rejected three change of venue motion ss but agreed to they're one february 19th. >> as you can see, we've lost a little weight. we've aged a little bit. we're fine. >> that's the late cbs news correspondent bob simon after being imprisoned by saddam hussein for 40 days during the gulf war in 1991. tributes to the veteran journalist are pulling in from around the world from the vietnam war to revolutions in the middle east for nearly 50 years, simon covered the world for cbs news and 60 minutes. his death in a car accident last night in manhattan is under investigation, but our nbc partner in new york reports simon was not wearing a seat belt. on her facebook page you can find a video tribute with some of the many highlights of bob simon's career. tonight our thoughts are with his family and his colleagues.

and this afternoon the nbc news family is remembering ned colt, the longtime nbc news correspondent who died suddenly in boston after suffering a massive stroke. colt reported from around the world. he was instrumental in nbc's coverage of the iraq war and he became part of the story when he and an nbc news crew were kidnapped by militants in fallujah back in 2004. their captors threatened them with death for three days before tribal leaders won the journalists' release. after colt left nbc, he joined two humanitarian agencies work working in the middle east. he was 58 years old. they call it the silent killer and it could happen in your home. >> a new construction home or maybe yours is an older model. whatever the case does your home have what it takes to keep you and your family from being poisoned? i'm erika gonzalez. i'll have that story coming up. and storm team 4 tracking some big changes blowing in.

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. storm team 4 tracking a wild wintry swing that is moving in on us right now. >> and it's only going colder from here on out. we have team coverage from storm team 4. we'll get to doug and amelia in just a moment. first wendy rieger is following breaking news at the live desk. >> pat, we are going to go back out live to the scene of that school bus crash in silver spring. right now all southbound lanes on georgia avenue are blocked near sligo avenue. be forewarned. 50 students were on the bus, two, we are told have some minor injuries. montgomery county schools tell us that another driver cut off that bus and that caused this bus driver to swerve and slam on the brakes and that's when the kids got thrown around a bit. that bus had left sligo creek elementary. see you in a few minutes at the top of the 5. back to you. let's get the latest on the big chill, amelia. as the sun goes down tonight,

the cold sets in. frigid temperatures when you factor in the winds overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. brutally cold for the kids at the bus top tomorrow morning. we'll get a bit of a break from the windchills on valentine's day but i am tracking snow that's going to be in the forecast. that could impact your dinner plans. frigid air returns late saturday night and sticks with us sunday into monday. this second shot of cold air will be the coldest so far this season. right now it's not too bad, actually. temperature 42 degrees northwest winds at about 15 miles an hour. look in the background here. notice the lack of clouds and it's that lack of clouds that will allow temperatures to drop quickly overnight tonight. and by tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. the temperature, it will be 16 degrees when you factor in the wind. it will feel like temperatures are anywhere from 10 below zero to 5 above. a very cold start for friday morning. by the lunchtime hour it's still breezy. temperature around 21.

plans for your friday night, bring your warmest winter jacket with you. the good thing about tomorrow's weather, plenty of sunshine in the forecast. not the case on saturday. any early morning sunshine will give way to clouds or at least dry through the midday hours. once we get into the afternoon hours, we could be seeing rain and snow showers. here we are at 5:00 p.m. tracking light snow across the area. that could continue into the evening hours bringing us around an inch or less of accumulation. that could certainly have ap impact on your dinner plans should you cancel them now but know there could be isolated slick spots on saturday evening. here are your headlines. temperatures in the 30s for the day. snow midday. it will stay far while. >> it really does.

we're talking about the coldest right now forecasting the coldest seven-day period we've had all winter long and it is going to get really cold starring tonight. we know we had that brutal arctic air. we've seen the jet stream dip to the south. that arctic air is drifting in as we speak. over the next few day, sunday into monday we're talking about not just near record breaking cold. we think we'll break a couple records. the record at dulles airport on monday mornings 11. i think we may shatter that. we may be that close between zero and 5 degrees on monday morning. then another cold shot middle of next week. and that one may come with a little bit of snow. amelia? >> exactly. the good thing is at least monday is presidents' day so the kids won't be at school. valentine's day impacts for the candy and flower run, you'll be fine. heading out to dinner, that's when we're dealing with snow and temperatures feeling like they're in the teens. sunday monday, high temperatures only in the low to mid-20s. record cold like doug said

delta air lines has made a change in the way sky miles member see flights online. delta has stopped publishing the frequent flier redemption chart on its website. it showed how many points were needed to redeem flights. now you have to choose a particular route and rate to find out how many miles a flight will cost. toef next week the d.c. area will be dealing with the coldest air so far this winter but in new england the problem is still massive amounts of snow.

a report on the rush to get it all under control before the next storm hits. it starts before the sun comes up with a goal of being done before the next batch of snow falls. 16-hour shifts for public works crews in new haven clearing the stuff off chapel street at 5:00 a.m. but a few blocks away it's a much different story. >> i can't get in and out. i got a daughter who's due monday. if she has the baby i can't get out to get her to the hospital. on west ivy street jennifer drawn is tired of waiting. how long have you been waiting to kind of get some help? >> since the first snowstorm. that wasn't that bad. >> the snowbanks and sheets of ice easily creep six feet into the one-way street which is why she called the city and it's on the list of streets they plan on clearing today. i hope they come through. >> reporter: here on elm street the snow has been taken care of.

the public works crew has already come through here. the director of transportation says he wishes every street could look like this but the city of new haven comes with its own set of challenges. >> we have a lot of onstreet parking, a lot of dense communities. >> reporter: the city's new snowblower has been coming in handy lately. it can clear a block in 15 minutes. >> we're playing for a grant for a snow melter to share with another town regionally. >> reporter: it's a solution that could come in time for the next snowy season. those on west ivy street know all too well there's still a lot of winter left. >> we appreciate it seeing there are two more storms coming up. now at 5:00 a bitter blast on our doorstep. temperature set to plunge across our area. >> flurries swept through but not enough to accumulate. >> but now that story is cold.

doug winds are picking up windchills will be near zero tonight. right? >> it's really going to be quite brutal as we continue through the evening hours. we saw that frontal boundary come through the region and now we're seeing the winds that have picked up and the temperatures are falling. take a look at the radar. first off notice that front making its way toward the south and east. didn't see much in the way of accumulation from d.c. back to the west but did see collating snow into the southern maryland back down around fredericksburg just enough to cover some of the grassy surfaces and the decks. that's about it. what we are seeing is that brutal arctic air. look at the winds gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour now, 31-mile-an-hour gust in leesburg 27 in washington, 22 towards pawtuxet river. that wind is bringing in the colder numbers and that's why we have a windchill advisory in effect for frederick county maryland frederick county virginia, everybody along i-81. this just issues along the northern neck and eastern shore. we could see it here too potentially. this is why. take a look at some of the

numbers as we move through night tonight. 19 by 6:00 down to 8 by 8:00 and look at tomorrow morning. this is d.c. friends. this is 2 below zero around 4:00 a.m. so yes, the coldest air we've seen so far this season but guess what? it gets a lot colder over the next couple of days, plus a couple chances of snow. winter really starting to pick up quick. >> doug thank you. news4 news4 following three big breaking stories tonight. a robbery and shooting investigation in northern virginia. the state of maryland has just ordered the inspection of all bridges following a frightening accident. and we've just gotten an up-close look at the burned metro track from last month's deadly incident. >> but we're going to start with that robbery and shooting outside of the bank in south riding. only news4 was in nearby chantilly when one of the suspects was taken into custody. that other suspect was found shot. deputies say the two robbers tried to hold up an armored car just outside the capital one bank off route 50.
