emperatures are in the teens around much of the region. take a look at that. the breeze will make it feel like it's below zero in your neighborhood. tom kierein is preparing you for what you'll face outside. not pretty out there. >> painful wind greeting you this morning. winds havedy diminished a bit but windchills in some locations still below zero. in prince george's county windchills down to 5 below zero. northern montgomery county at 6 below zero. dulles leesburg now windchills minus 4, minus 5. manassas prince william county windchill there is at 0. in washington, reagan national windchill at 2 below zero now. the winds have been gusting overnight to 40 miles an hour, but they have diminished. temperatures are hovering in the low teen. latest wind gusts are around 20 to 25. there is one gust over 30 miles per hour in the last hour are or so. keep you up with the polar

i just checked the temperature here in woodbridge 14 degrees and of course we have the breeze going on. so it feels even colder than that. standing in place just waiting for your ride is not a great way to spend your time on a day like this. i talked to one gentleman who was actually at the bus shelter for quite a while. he got here early well in advance of his bus. and here is his take on the weather. >> this is siberia. this is the worst this year so far. i try to time myself so i don't come to the bus stop too early. >> reporter: this is siberia. i like that. very appro po. dress in layers. this is dangerous cold. if you are going out and about, if you have to spend time waiting for a bus or in a slug line make sure that you dress appropriately. now, we have breaking news with traffic. >> we're talking about the

rails. some major penn line delays. 407 and 505 completely canceled. penn line south 403, that is 44 minutes behind right now. lots of delays perhaps because of the cold weather and all these mechanical issues that they're having this morning. tickets honored there on metro if you do take the penn line. also on metro, orange blue silver line delays to new carrollton and largo. 270 at shady grove road everything flowing nicely there. 66 at 95, no major issues there. taking a look at prince george's county that's looking good as well. no construction there. and we're not seeing any major incidents at this point. still have this issue in hyattsville. east-west highway westbound two lanes blocked. we have a few tips to keep your car running in this bitter cold weather. mechanics say you should check your battery strength because a weak battery when it's warm turns in to a dead battery when it's this cold. also make sure you have at least half a tank of gas to prevent the fuel line from freezing.

new developments. >> d.c. police say it is critical that they find this boy, 12-year-old anis hassan has been missing for more than 12 hours now. he was last seen near kelly miller middle school in northeast d.c. yesterday afternoon. police say he was wearing an orange and gray jacket burgundy shirt and with a school logo and khaki khaki khaki pants. today marion barry's son will be back in a d.c. courtroom on charges he threatened a bank teller. according to doubt rcourt documents, the ban wouldn't will he him withdraw from an overdrawn account. he tlooushrew a chair and broke a security camera. he's running for his late fair father's d.c. council seat. thomas claggett and kenmoor

even florida and parts of the deep south are facing below average temperatures now. for new england, this cold air comes ahead of yet another snowstorm adding to more than 6 feet of snow that has buried that region. some homeless people in our area will get a chance to pick out a vital piece of clothing later today. more than 200 people will be given gift certificate for a winter coat. those gift certificates will be given out at the central union mission. recipients will go to foreman mills to pick out their own coats. the gift certificates were donated by radio 1 and foreman mill wills. the slug line commuters in prince william county are doing what they can to stay warm. here is a live look at the storm team 4 x 4. chuck bell will join us live in minutes. plus an american congressman making headlines for this cameo appearance on c-span.

parka, gloves hat, thick sock, everything you have to try to stay warm. current temperatures at 11 but look at the wind gate whizzing around in the wind. our current windchill here at woodbridge is at minus 2. so it is a cold start outside first thing this morning. just sent out a tweet with as many freezing consonsantas that i could put in it. chance the snow finally coming our way. that's up in a few minutes. i want to be in the bahamas. but i don't know how to get there. 6:17. if you're dreading these frigid temperatures today like we are, just think about how your pets might feel when they're outside. here are tips to keep them safe and warm. keep them indoors except for exercise especially in these dangerously cold conditions. they have to stay outside they should have a dry dog house or some sort of enclosure bringing enough to lie down in, but small enough to keep the body heat in.

d.c. rabbi could face more charges after being accused of voyeurism. 152 women have been identified by police on video. they were caught on by hidden camera by rabbi fwrun dell. that rabbi is accused of recording them during a ritual bath at a temple in georgetown. yesterday a meeting was held in which a possible plea deal was discussed. >> i'm just -- i'm very shocked. i'm shocked and it's just an amazing amount of victims. >> some of the videos date back as far as 2009. the fbi says it's opening an inquiry into the execution-style killings of three university of north carolina supports. the students who were shot and killed in an off campus apt amount earlier this week. police say it stemmed from an argument over a sparkparking spot.

11 degrees in silver spring right now. >> and we're not factoring in the windchills. we showed you earlier that there are negative windchills. let's check in with tom kierein for your weather and traffic on the 1s. brutally cold. >> and i just tweeted out all of the windchills going forward throughout the rest of the day today. here are the current windchills around the region. we are still subzero. and we'll stay with subzero windchills between now and 8:00 at the bus stop layer up temperatures will stay in the low teens. between 8:00 and 9:00 we'll have the temperatures in the mid teens. windchills will be hovering around zero. bright sunshine through the morning and into the afternoon, as well. current windchills are around zero to 5 breeze. they were worse just a couple of hours ago baut windecause the winds have diminished but still dangerously cold. later today, making it into the upper 20s and we'll have the windsdy mipishing. and then overnight tonight clouds increase. teens by dawn on saturday. saturday may make it up to

afternoon 40 hedegrees. could get afternoon snow showers. gusts to 60 miles per hour on saturday night. and then on sunday in the morning, we'll likely still have gusts of wind to around 50 to 60 miles per hour and temperatures reaching just near 20 degrees during the afternoon. the winds will diminish late on sunday. then for president's day, near record cold in the morning on monday. down to single digits afternoon highs the mid 20s. and then one of the models, the american noodle is giving us a chance of some light snow late tuesday into wednesday morning. the european model doesn't give us anything. but the american model has had a better track record this winter. so still a poelt of a little light snow that will be late on tuesday and into early wednesday. that is the next chance for any snow. and staying below freezing toward the end of next week. coming up next your commuter forecast. now breaking news for commuters on the roads. breaking news roads and rails. talking about the penn line delays and cancellations all

identify any pipes that might freeze in places like crawl spaces attics outside walls. they say you should let warm air circulate around the pipes by opening cabinet doors that may be nearby. you can also keep a small trickle of hot and cold water running during super cold nights. outside your house, you should disconnect any hoses from specki gets. chuck bell will join us live at 6:# 1 with 6:41 with a look at the winds. and we continue to follow the story of an officer-involved shooting in ht district. a d.c. officer exchanged gun fire with a robbery suspect near the u street corridor. that area is shut down right now. richard jordan joins us from the scene now with new information about the suspect. >> reporter: we've just learned that the suspect did not survive. he died here on the street.

the police investigation is under way. take a look here at 15th street northwest and caroline. that is where most of the activity is. but just a few blocks down on swan street that's where things started early into the morning. d.c. police officers coming in contact with the robbery suspect trying to take him into custody. guns were pulled out. shots were fired. the gunfire exchanged between the officer and the suspect. things then moved up north over to caroline street just one block south from u street. and that's where the suspect was shot. now, what is unclear at this point is if the police officer shot the suspect or if the suspect shot himself. we're learning that the gunshot here is consistent with a self in- in- in-

in- in-inflicted gunshot. we're seeing a lot of people coming out of their buildings, trying to get to their vehicles. that is not happysis not happening. a lot of streets are blocked off. you're good on u street traffic is moving in both directions. but it is this area of 15th street 14th street, that you will 150e asee a lot of streets blocked off. richard jordan news 4. 6:35. a woman accused of murdering a virginia tech student will be sentenced without going to trial. jessica ewing entered an alfred plea in court, that means she maintains her innocence but admits the state does have enough evidence to convict her. the case will go straight to sentencing. 1450es she's charged with strangling jessica you see here. and this fire started about 7:00 last night at an auction and storage facility in warrington. these photos posted by twitter users show the flames. we're told the firefighters

picture is one of two men who tried to rob an armored car yesterday afternoon in fairfax county. there was shoot-out and one of the suspects was hit at least four times. the men escaped, bus police caught up to them several miles away. the suspect who was shot is in critical condition. d.c. police say they caught the person who stole two kittens from a petco. police arrested that teenager yesterday and charged him with theft. the robbery happened on monday at the petco on 14th street in klum bee columbia heights. the kittens have not been found. they were up for adoption at petco. a sdoechldeveloping story out of new orleans. with a we're learning about the conditions of gunshot victims. plus having fun with a serious subject. how president obama is trying to draw attention to the deadline to sign up for health insurance. and weather is important to you. throughout the morning, you can keep your eye on the

you have to dress appropriately. now, how bad has it been? you've been waiting 15 minutes. >> it is extremely freezing. >> is that your bus? >> that's it right there. >> go gee. have a good one. we won't keep him from getting on his bus. we've seen a lot of people jumping up and down rubbing their hands. we heard from a woman who says she's wearing the coat she bought in alaska which of course is appropriate on a day like this. another guy who was just saying this is really the coldest weather he's experienced in a very very long time. and i checked the temperature here in woodbridge. 14 degrees which obviously is very very cold, but it's that wind that really just cuts through you making everything feel just so so much colder. so if you do have to go out and about, dress in layers. make sure you're wearing the best coat the warmest coat you've got. certainly don't forget the hat. and the gloves.

megan mcgrath, news 4. it is now 6:48. it's been a deadly winter in maryland. three more people have died as a result of the cold weather. the department of health says three people died last week. the victims were from charles and baltimore counties. officials say 19 people have died in maryland because of the cold. the cold can be receipt tough pretty tough on your car. mechanics say check your battery strength. a weak battery when it's warm is a dead battery when it gets cold. also make sure you have half a tank of gas in your car to prevent the fuel line from freezing. check your tire pressure often. and if you park outside, you can cover the hood with a tarp to keep it a little bit warmer. these windchills have you thinking about the cold, but tom kierein is tracking the next chance you could see snow in your neighborhood. that's at 6:51. marion barry's son will be

this happened on 15th street and caroline street northwest near the u street corridor. richard jordan joins us from the scene with more on the closures in the area. >> reporter: we just saw the medical examiner pull away that is an indication that the investigation is moving forward and perhaps the crime scene will be pulled down shortly. but for now still in place here along 15th street northwest between swan and u street. that is blocked off. vask traffic on u street is moving but not 15th between u and swan. this all started earlier this morning. a d.c. police officer coming it contact with a robbery suspect. shots were exchanged. there was an exchange of gunfire here. the suspect was shot and killed. what is not clear at this point, if the shot that killed the suspect came from the police officer or if that suspect shot himself. that's all under investigation. richard jordan news 4.
