off the top at 11:00, arctic air dumped up to three inches of snow on tomsome folks in our area but powerful winds are the big concern now and tomorrow morning driving windchills into negative

territory. the gusts already doing some damage. this scaffolding in downtown d.c. just no match for mother nature. we'll get to more of that damage in just a minute but we're starting tonight in the weather center with amelia because of the dangerous weather conditions. just how bad will it get? >> from right now to mid-morning hours tomorrow that's when the winds are the strongest and the temperatures are going to be dangerously cold. you want to avoid being outdoors so some safety tips for you tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. because of the string windsong winds, we have reports of power outages, you want to sleep away from trees. if you sleep upstairs in a bedroom with a tree outside of the window consider sleeping down stairs tonight. parking on a street with a lot of trees, try to park jomsomewhere else. avoid being outside tonight or tomorrow morning. factoring in the winds. if you have to travel make sure you travel with a full tank of gas and of course have your

phone with a full charge. everybody right now under a high wind warning. this is run until 2:00 p.m. tomorrow for damaging wind gusts. sustained winds up to 40 miles per hour. a windchill warning also effect right now to run until noon for the d.c. metro area southern maryland and parts of northern virginia and until 6:00 p.m. for areas north and west of the d.c. metro area. windchills could be as low as 30 to 15 degrees below 0. that is dangerously cold air. again, overnight tonight, and during the day tomorrow. coming up in about ten minutes, i'm breaking down the windchills for you hour by hour letting you know what you can expect in your neighborhood. tonight, we had snow showers in the area with whiteout conditions. scaffolding collapse a bus in the ditch and we have team coverage on the dangerous weather right now in columbia heights. darcy, what is the latest?

>> caller: well hi amelia. i can tell you that it's brutally cold out here. just stepping out of the live truck a minute ago, you can feel it on your face on your ears. any area not completely covered up we talked about the dangerous road conditions. we talked about the cold as well as the ice and want to show you here we are on the sidewalk along 18th street. walking anywhere you can see many places the sidewalks are sheets of ice. heavy snow showers combined with gusty winds created near whiteout conditions for drivers in northern virginia. the blinding snow made it difficult at times to see the travel lanes. the quick moving squalls dmam hard and fast. it was challenging for anyone out and about on this valentine's day. >> pretty treacherous, actually. probably getting worse. >> reporter: a viewer sent us this picture. a bus in a ditch in twin brook

parkway. roads described as slick and slushy. high winds may have been to blame for a scaffolding collapse at 9th and v streets. then there was the frigid cold. were you prepared? >> no. >> reporter: why not? >> i didn't believe it when the sun came out this afternoon. >> reporter: so you didn't think it was going to be so bad? >> no. i thought it was another overreaction. >> reporter: and ice. slip ri roads and sidewalks. this group of women here from connecticut on a college tour got a taste of this washington weather. >> the wind's a little brutal. i mean it's cold. it's cold. walking around like all day. >> reporter: so it really wasn't that bad for those girls who were from connecticut but for us here not used to this bitter cold it's definitely something to keep in mind. it sounds like it's going to get worse tomorrow. again, the wind gusts, bitter cold make sure you are

dealing with whiteout conditions in indiana where heavy snow and high winds caused this five-car crash and slick roads caused an even bigger pile-up in pennsylvania. even though it involved more than 100 cars and trucks police say there were only minor injuries. now to astory. our sister station in baltimore reports a teenager shot and killed himself after police tried to pull him over. he took off and fired at officers. and wbal says the car he was driving is registered to a home in kentucky where three people were found dead today. now to some breaking news in copenhagen denmark, where there's a second shootinging. police just confirmed that one of the three victims shot outside a synagogue has died. that person was shot in the head along with two police officers at around midnight their time. ten hours earlier, someone hot and killed a man in a cafe and wounded three officers.

it may have been targeting an artist. u.s. officials released a statement tonight condemning the shooting and promising to help in the investigation. new at 11:00, we have learned the identity of a man involved a shootout with d.c. police. investigators say benjamin gwinn in a string of robberies and officers caught him in the act. they were on swan street on tuesday and tried to stop it but he allegedly shot at them. police say he later killed himself. a man's body discovered in a church parking lot in herndon and police say he was wanted for trying to kill his wife. police say he broke into the home. investigators say they got into a struggle and the man shot his wife. he ran off and someone found his body at the church this morning. police say he killed himself but his wife is expected to be okay. another food truck disappeared and police hope viewers help find it.

pretty hard to miss. the sate truck is dark red with a big rooster on the side. it was reported stolen last night. about a block from the restaurant associated with it. back in november a news 4 viewer found the popcorn truck less than a day after someone stole it. tomorrow's the deadline to sign up for affordable health care but a lot of people were denied a chance to get covered today. crews are inspecting dozens of local bridges. what they found and what they plan to do to stop concrete from falling. and we continue following the top story. this was the beat-up parkway in maryland. the snow's moved on but it's

crews have been inspecting bridges in maryland and now they have found more crumbling concrete. these inspections were sparked by an incident tuesday when loose concrete hit a car. maryland's department of transportation says crews re-inspected dozens of bridges in the area and identified 17 to be patched up or concrete removed. the state highway administration also has crews working on five bridges in maryland. one of them in frederick on i-270 over route 85. three others on interstate 485 in prince george's county. new at 11:00, a lot of people could not sign up for federal health care today because of more problems with the website. a glitch wouldn't allow them to verify the income electronically and that's based on how much you make. the government has fixed the problem but tomorrow is the deadline to sign up for this

d.c. superior court opened the doors for a special round of weddings today. 14 of them on february 14th. this is the first time to open on a saturday. saying i do on valentine's day. >> staff came up with this idea and they volunteered to come in

on a saturday morning that they didn't have to do and perform the weddings and help couples, you know get their licenses so it's great. >> the court's director of family court presided over the ceremonies and they were able to do about two weddings an hour. but all the folks heading out tonight for valentine's day, boy, they got it all. snow the ice, they got the wind. >> the snow came in so quickly and the temperatures dropped, the winds picked up. a lot of slick spots across the area. still tracking very slick conditions so if you can avoid traveling. obviously, late tonight and tomorrow morning. let the road crews get out there and do their work. the snow is out of here. focus now all about the high winds and the extremely cold temperatures when you factor in those winds. because of that the weather having a high impact on your day tomorrow. the silver lining i guess if you had to say something about the weather tomorrow plenty of sunshine. the weather headline slick spots out there tonight.

windy, dangerously cold throughout the day tomorrow. and we'll start to see slow improvements monday but we'll likely start off presidents' day with record low temperatures in spots. these are also my facebook and twitter pages. high wind warning until 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. when you have a high wind warning, some damage is likely from winds, trees down power outages. a windchill warning goes until noon for the d.c. a metro area and all the way until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow for areas north and west of washington. windchills during the warning period will be as low as 30 below 0 to 15 degrees below 0. when it's that cold outside, you want to avoid being outdoors at all if possible. a windchill advisory goes into effect tomorrow around noon. it will run until 6:00 p.m. and then for the d.c. metro area southern maryland and northern neck. windchills won't be as bad but still be in the dangerous level.

so when we're expecting damaging winds, here's what we are talking about. trees down. you want to avoid parking by trees like i mentioned earlier and power outages. some already reported in parts of berk virginia and herndon area. some damage with winds this strong. gusts up to 60 miles per hour. the snow is out of here and remaining dry tomorrow and presidents' day, as well. look at the wind gusts. right now around 40 miles per hour. temperatures are in the teens. everybody's in the teens. washington at 19. so when you factor in the winds, this is how it feels outside. about 10 below 0. 1 in washington and 3 below in mo monassas. that take a second. look at how cold it will be. feeling 23 below 0 in martinsburg. 10 below 0 at the river. it is just brutal tomorrow morning. on into the midday and afternoon

hours. windchill still only around 0 or below. monday morning, chris, temperatures start off in the single digits. a high temperature on monday of 25 degrees. and then tracking a system that could bring us some snow on tuesday and wednesday. but again, coming up at the end of the newscast more about the dangerously cold air and the extremely high winds tonight on into tomorrow. >> they sure are. thank you. we are getting new video just coming in. the fierce winds causing some major damage out there. we just got these images from landover where a tree punched right through a roof. you can see it caused quite a mess. in fact much of that ceiling collapsed. well all weekend we are celebrating 40 years of "saturday night live" and right after tonight's news the premier episode from 1975. but the fun really starts sunday at 7:00 when the "snl" red carpet special and then the extravaganza of three hours of
