"news 4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m.. it is 5:00 a.m.. good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. welcome to "news 4 today" for this thursday, february 19, 2015. dangerously cold out there. that is the top story this morning. our weather, some schools are closed or delayed right now. we just learned that prince william and fauquier county schools will be starting two hours late today. loudoun, culpeper and page counties also on a t delay. we also learned that prince will be on a into hour delay. >> spotsylvania fredericksburg city schools are closed. same for stafford and king

george's county county courthouse. megan mcgrath with how that will impact things there today. >> reporter: it will have a big impact for people who have business at the courthouse today. the courthouse in upper marlboro is closed both the district and the circuit courts share this building this dark building you see behind me. they are not going to be doing business today because of an issue with a broken water pipe. that then affected the electrical system to the building and so they cannot open today. it's very very dark over here on the new side of that courthouse. so people will just have to make other plans. we'll keep an eye on the situation. but the building will be closed all day today. broken water pipes are a major problem. d.c. water says they fielded 4,000 calls in just the last ten days. most being for frozen pipes and burst pipes. so cold temperatures, they will stick with us for a while. so this will be a problem for several days to come. what can you do if you're

concerned if you have pipes on the exterior walls? here are some of the tips from the experts. recall you can run your water a little bit. that flow of water will help prevent breezing thise in freezing in the lines. also open the doors to the cabinets to let the heat from the rest of the house into the cabinet. also something important is to know where the shutout for your water pump is. so in case you do have a break if your pipes do burst, you can shut off the water and try to minimize the damage. but these cold temperatures are going to be with us for some time and a lot of people in the area are having major, major issues. they're getting lots of damage because of the burst pipes. and of course we're seeing a problem here in marlboro. but it's very cold out here. 13 degrees outside our studios. cleanup from water damage will keep ford's theater museum

news 4 your health, a cocktail of three breast cancer drugs can buy patients an extra 16 months of life. that's according to researchers at the university of texas. the combination includes two drugs made to go together by california based jenna tech plus standard chemotherapy drug. breast cancer is the second biggest cancer killer of american women after lung cancer. during tuesday's snow we told you that d.c. cabs might charge a $15 snow emergency fee. this morning the "washington post" is reporting that most cabs decided not to charge that fee. the goal of the cab surcharge is to make sure some cabbies

the fbi asking for your help to find two men believed to be behind a number of bank robberies. take a look here. they robbed two banks if less than an hour in northern virginia yesterday. first this will bb&t on east maple avenue about 40 minutes later, they robbed the wells fargo in sterling holding one person at gunpoint. investigators believe the same two may be connected to a robbery in mclean last month. today actor danfully glover will join the u.s. postal workers union as it kicks off new contract negotiations. glover is the son of two postal workers. this is the first time in more than four years that contract negotiations have taken place. the postal union has been critical of recent cuts at the service. today the union president plans to outline his vision for the agency which includes better customer service and longer hours at neighborhood post offices. a city in arizona is remembering a young woman killed by isis. kayla mueller was 26. she was doing international aid

work in syria when she was captured two years ago. just this month we learned she was killed. you can see there is a huge group with candles to remember her in prescott arizona where she was from. r was the last known american hostage held by isis. president obama says the u.s. is not at war with islam. instead, terrorists who seek to pervert islam. the president made those comments during a summit. he says muslims in the u.s. and around the world need to tight the misconception that groups like isis speak for them. the summit will continue today in d.c.. civic leaders from 60 countries around the world are taking part in that meeting. you will have to wait a little longer to find out how the prince william county school superintendent plans to make up for an $11 million budget shortfall. last night's school board meeting has been canceled because of the weather. the superintendent was supposed to prepts hist his budget to the board. we expect to learn details this monday night.

barry freundel. watch the washington app for any updates. a developing story this morning. we have learned new information on the murder of a local attorney here in the district. news 4 zachary kiesch is at the donovan hotel with new details on what police found in the hotel room of david messerschmitt >> repord morning. is a really popular hotel here just south of thomas circle here on 14th street. a lot of young professionals know this place partially because of their rooftop parties. they have a great place here and a place that you probably wouldn't associate with the crime scene, with a murder scene. and yet that's exactly what happened earlier this month. we know david mess ererschmitt was found stabbed in a fourth floor room here and police have new details. a search warrant reveals police found a wallet, cell phone, computer and a condom in that room. we also know that david mess her

will messerschmitt worked in a downtown law firm. actually what led to his stabbing we don't know but police are interested in this person. if you look at this video, this is a person of interest as they try to connect the dots and figure out what happened at this luxury hotel here in northwest d.c.. reporting live i'm zachary kiesch news 4. 13 degrees outside our studios. an audit of the november election up covered a slew of you issues at d.c. polling places. the audit found there were technical break down oigs at 57 precincts. there were not enough poll workers at 23 because many didn't show up for work. despite no law requiring an i.d. to vote some voters were turned around from the reeves center because they didn't have an i.d.. the audit also found voters interacted with students because schools were not closed. many say that raises some safety questions. a d.c. than could now face 30 years in prison for killing a howard university student. ross david lagarde pled did
