and 302, 10 to 15 minutes behind. 95 in maryland bw parkway in and out of town looking good. outbound past 322 looking a little slow. i'm not seeing anything happening there, but for some reason we're a little slow there. perhaps a little icy or something and people are just slowing down. prince george's county overall looking good. 66 here and 95 getting that normal 6:00 a.m. slowdown here through dale city headed north. otherwise in general not much happening right now. just very very cold. we'll keep our fingers crossed. montgomery county schools opening two hours late this morning. bus drivers across the district are going to need that time to the buses going. megan mcgrath live at the shady grove bus depot in rockville with a look at what is being done to make sure your kids aren't left in the colds. >> reporter: i checked the temperature just a little while ago, it is bitterly cold here.

just 3 yees.degrees. and this can cause real problems for cars and buses. you look behind me here you can see the lights are on at the buses this morning. and everything is in good shape. they actually have a team they call them the bus team and they came in at 4:30 this morning. they turned on the buses, turned on the hooters. making sure that everything is up and running and ready to go before the start of the school day today. now, montgomery county has gone with a two hour delay like many school districts did just to w their people a little have a time to get out there, check over the buses, take a look at the schools, make sure they have heat make sure they don't have broken pip e ready to go. so far so good. we'll be keeping an eye on it of course and bringing you an update. but the kids have a little bit longer on sleep in and montgomery county an extra two hours about and these folks behind me, they will keep up with their work making sure everything is ready to go. now, on a side note, i want to

virginia schools all delayed two hours. in maryland montgomery county, prince george's county, frederick, charles and calvert counties all delayed two hours. washington county st. mary's anne arundel, howard county schools also on a two hour delay. allegheny county schools are now closed about. in west virginia, berkeley jefferson, grant, hardy, hamp hire shire, mineral and morgan all closed. entire list at the bottom of your screen and in the nbc washington app. that they are mmrmometer is almost teasing us. it looks close to zero. coming up amelia segal will join us live from the weather deck to demonstrate just loss cold it is. 6:05. 5 degrees outside. right now pairfairfax police need your help finding the driver in a deadly hit and run. someone found a woman lie ngts middle of braddock road in centreville. police say she had been hit by a car while trying to cross the street. the incident happened in front of a normally busy shopping

center. but because of all the cold weather, most people weren't out. police are still working to put together a description of the car involved. new this morning, a new report says metro knew the radio network in suby tunnels did not work properly but never told the fire department. that's according to the "washington post". metro's communication -- aware the radio system was not reliable but did not reray laylay the information to fire officials. today we should learn whether virginia's former first lady will go to prison. maureen mcdonnell will be sentenced by the same judge who sentenced her husband governor bob mcdonnell. prosecutors want maureen to todo 18 months for taking lavish gifts. defense lawyers are calling for community service saying the public humiliation of the trial was punishment enough.

northern virginia bureau reporter david culver will be in the courtroom today. we'll break the news with a push alert through the nbc washington app as soon as the sentencing happens. today you'll get a chance to weigh in on udc plan to close its downtown community college campus. about 2500 students would be affected by that plan. those students will be moved to the main campus in van ness. udc officials say that decision was made because of rising rent at the north capitol street location. today's hearing is at 3:00 p.m. he at the downtown campus on north capitol street. breaking news that could impact your commute. >> getting a lot of information from metro right now. just hearing in my ear here that orange line no service between west falls church and ballston. orange and silver single tracking through east falls church. major delays here this morning because of a cracked rail. this cold weather making a mess for metro. going to have more information in a couple of minutes.

8:00. still a bit breezy with winds gusting around 20 miles per hour. and then winds will diminish. temperatures climbing into the upper teens. we won't have the subzero windchills later this afternoon. coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:21 a look at our saturday snow time and totals. you may soon be able to drive a little faster on maryland highways. state senate passed a bill that would raise the speed limit to 70 miles per hour. a similar bill is pending in the house of delegates. the vote marks a milestone for the bill which died in the senate committee last year. opponents say increasing the speed limit is dangerous because it would cause some drivers to push to 80 miles an hour. this weekend no matter what metro line you take, you will wait a bit longer. there is track work on all six lines. red line bethesda station will be closed for escalator repair.

to get where you're going. allow a lot of extra time. of course we're waking up to record cold this morning as we deal with below zero windchills. you're look at a live picture from crystal city. this mean as brutal trip to the metro station or bus stop this morning. conditions are also ideal for frostbite, so make sure you dress accordingly. >> and as you are getting ready to take on the elements amelia segal is live on the weather deck now to show us just how dangerous it can be. you've been out there, you showed us the frozen t-shirt, you've made ice cream. what else is going on out there? >> so first before i do my next experiment tom mentioned this earlier in the show, you can see the wind right now is picking up. at times it's calm and then the wind will pick up gusting up to 20 miles an hour. and it's because of that that it is producing some dangerous

windchills outside. i'm bundled up i'm taking break indoors. so what we'll do this time i have water as hot as it will get. of course i've been standing out here waiting to do the experiment. so it has chilled. i'll pour it in the country and then i'll throw it. as i do so we have evaporation, condensation. so if it works we should see it changing in to snow. cold water is too dense, but warm water, you have more surface area. ready? did you see that? shouagain? let's do it one more time. so again, water as hot as you can get it and you'll throw it and the vapor condenses and you see some snow back there in the distance. now, frostbite is possible in some areas this morning in about 30 minutes. so you want to take the cold seriously. of course tom will have more on the cold coming up in a little bit. guys adding ib suggest to injury we'll be getting snow

tomorrow as well. coming up, i'll be doing more cold weather experiments. i think i might try the ice cream one more time. >> no complaints here. she mentioned the threat of frostbite. you need to remember that that can really set in within just a couple of minutes. most often on your fingers toeses ear chin. and you may not realize that tough. so here are the stages. first your skin has this sort of prickly feeling to it and then the numbness will set in. after that your skin can turn red, white maybe grayish in color. and then it starts to get hard. you might experience clumsiness because of maus muscle stiffness. sometimes blisters app you want to wear warm waterproof hats gloves and a coat. we're proof boots if you can. and drink lots of water. you want it stay hydrated. best way to avoid frostbite is to avoid staying outside for

long periods of time. take a look at car loses control and almost crushes a police officer. s officer was helping another motorist who was stranded when it tapped on saturday happened on saturday. the force of the crash threw the officer into a ditch. say he's recovering from a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. the bitter cold will soon give way to some more winter weather. i know you're about to cry. when you could see more snow this your neighborhood with tom's forecast at 6:21. members of the british royal family are coming right here to washington we're learning this now, charles and camilla will be in d.c. next month, they will be here march 17th through the 19th. the trip is to commemorate the

1550th anniversary of the end of the american civil war and they have already got a few stops planned. they will be going to mount vernon lincoln's cottage they will be visiting with veterans. after the d.c. trip they will be going to louisville, kentucky for a health symposium. so as soon as we get more details, we'll be letting you know and posting it on nbcwashington.com. today fairfax county police could release more details about a man shot and killed by one o20. john gear was in a standoff when records show gear had his hands up and was unarmed at the time of the shooting. >> 6:22 and 5 degrees in northwest washington. new this morning, check your cabinets. hundreds of products are being pulled from store shelves after traces of peanuts were found in them. the fda is warning people with allergies to avoid cumin and products that contain cumin.

metro, frigid chills. the afternoon commute walking back home in the mid teens. winter storm watch all the counties in blue including frederick, western loudoun, northern fauquier west virginia for snow, sleet and icing. the timing on the arrival there is right around noontime on saturday. then it gets in to the metro area, rest of northern virginia and southern maryland during the rest of the afternoon on saturday. it continues as snow pink zone that's a zone of sleet and freezing rain. changes over to that after 6:00 p.m. on saturday. then rain begins to move in late saturday night. that may stay as freezing rain until around midnight and then rain after that leaving in its wake the amounts of know 2 to 4 inches. lighter amounts southern maryland eastern shore. farther north and west 4 to 7 inches of snow and sleet.

and that's for northern montgomery county loudoun, shenandoah valley and out into the mountains. and after we get through saturday we'll have maybe lingering rain on sunday morning and a break briefly into the mid-40s on sunday. cold into next week. highs staying below freezing monday and tuesday. should stay dry through the end of the week. breaking news, we're talking about the orange and silver lines on metro. single tracking through east falls church still at this point this morning. no more busing, but major delays because of the single tracking and a broken rail. vre, frederickburg train 300 and 302 now very delayed. 40 minutes on 300, 35 on 302. new york avenue inbound at north capitol, a water main break making the road quite icy. overall no major problems on the

lola and thunder jumped a 5 foot fence yesterday. and they ended up in a frozen marsh. lola was a little scared as she tried to fight off her rescuers at first. they eventually managed to get lola and thunder back to shore safely. >> i'm so relieved. i don't know how i'm ever going to thank them. i'm so thankful. these dogs are my world. >> the owner says that 5-foot fence is usually tall enough to keep them in the yard but snow banks next to the fence actually helped them to get a little higher. >> firefighters do such dangerous and important work . >> a painfully cold start to the morning. this is a live look at national harbor. hour by hour windchills you'll be dealing with throughout the

breaking news on metro. orange and silver lines single tracking still through east falls church. major delays continue. this is because of one perhaps two cracked rails that they're dealing with this morning. take your alternate if you can. here is our other problem in the city new york avenue inbound at north capitol, we ha a nice sheen on the road here from an earlier water main break. that will make the road quite slick. this shows some of the water now freezing and a bit dangerous there. wide look at things overall looking pretty typical. inner loop and outer loop no major problems. 66 inbound, a little slow inside the beltway for some reason. not seeing anything happening there. but i can see the red on the map. 66 and 95 moving tloonk pretty well. more on these metro delays coming up in a couple of minutes. the other big story right how, the extremely cold

of interest in the kidnapping. earlier this week the father said two men knocked him out and stole his suv. it happened on martin luther king jr. avenue. the men ditched the car. the child was not hurt. investigators are now talking with a person of interest in a deadly hit and run. a driver hit and killed rick warrick last month on the bw parkway. at the time warrick and his fiance were changing a tire near laurel. police say that they have recovered the car the person of interest was driving. police say they have caught a burglar who hit a series of homes in montgomery county. melvin has been charged with burglarizing four homes in wheaton. he also assaulted a homeowner. he entered through unlocked doors and windows. parents say it is a growing problem. frequent fights in the holes of

a high school in prince george's county. this is video showing several girls fighting at forestville high school. the students were disciplined, but they did not say how. maryland is offering state workers $15,000 to leave their jobs. the state is offering the buyout to save money. state employees are being offered lump sum payments plus $200 for each year's service. governor hogan hopes to save about $30 million by letting employees leave voluntarily. today michelle obama is honoring the women of the civil rights movement. mrs. obama is hosting a panel discussion with women from multiple generations who are still helping bring about change. it is all in honor of black history month. brutal conditions as you step outside. but the worst of this will soon be behind us. tom is breaking down the temperature changes.

we're talking about through east falls church major delays continue. take an alternate route if you can. it will be a mess. 6:45 is your time. school bus drivers are working hard this morning to make sure your kids get to school safely. megan mcglathk crews are getting the buses ready. >> reporter: >> reporter: when it gets this cold buses stips don't want to start. he with saw problems in fairfax county yesterday where there were a lot of bus delays because some simply would not start you can take a look behind me. in montgomery county they have a two hour delay today and they're doing that because of the bitter cold and they want to make sure that everything is operational and up and running in time for the kids so that the students are not at the bus stop longer than need to be. they have a bus team that came in at 4:30 this morning.

they turned on the buses. they put the heat on. they're warming things up and i'm told that everything is good to go. they're ready to pick up the kids. it's a two hour delay, so extra time to sleep in, but we're told everything is looking good. we'll continue to keep an eye on the situatio but it's looking great here. back to you. >> thank you, megan. it's not just the schools affected by the weather today. prince george's county cour is closed for the second day in a row. frigid cold temperatures there caused a pipe to burst in the building on wednesday. that damaged the electrical system. it left the building without any heat. there is no word as to when the building will reopen. it is dangerously cold this morning as we've been telling you. so you want to make sure you really layer up before you leave home this is arlington.

you can use #dangerous cold and tweet us how you're preparing. as you are describing the cold we are showing you what these dangerous conditions can do. amelia segal live on the weather deck with sort of a freezing experiment. >> yes, you're right. i'm doing two this time because i think this is such a good example. so i took an old t-shirt i dipped it in water. honor system i did bring it inside let it defrost, and thought i'd show to you again. just being outside in five minutes, this shirt is completely frozen solid. that's how cold it is out here. something fun you can do with the kids today, if you're an elementary schoolteacher, you've done this before. take a bag. only about half a country of milk put a little bit of vanilla la take x.ext and a little sugar. url usually you need ice and salt and you put it in the salty water situation. but it's so cold out here this morning that we don't need that.

help finding the driver in a deadly hit and run. someone found a woman lying in the middle of braddock road in centreville. shed a been hit by a car while trying to cross the street. the accident happened in front of a formally busy shopping center but you because the cold most people weren't out. right now police are trying to figure out what happened to a man and woman who were found dead in a northern virginia park. officers found them a car parked at mountain run lake park in culpeper county last night. we're told that both of them had signs of trauma to hair bod their bodies. police are asking anyone who visited the lake yesterday to give them a call. following a developing story several people hurt after two trains collide in in switzerland. this is just north of zurich. we have video to show you. a high speed train and subway train both going in the same direction, that high speed train hit the back of the subway train, knocked it right off the tracks.

some of the cars were derailed. but the cars did not overturn. five people hurt. one of them seriously injured. work is under way to upright the train and get all the commuters on to buses and get them to where they need to go. 6:50. 6 degrees outside. new this morning, a report says metro knew the radio network in the subway tunnels did not work properly. but never told the fire department. that's according to the "washington post". metro's communication system is under scrutiny right now after last month's deadly smoke emergency on a train near l'enfant plaza. the post says metro was aware the radio system was not reliable but did not relay that information to the fire officials. metro says the fire tent shoul have routinely checked the radios. today make sure you have the nbc washington app handy. we'll send breaking news push alert as soon as former first lady maureen mcdonnell is sentenced. david kuld ver will be in the courtroom.
