shooting will in northeast washington along brent wood place. there is the map to give you you a better idea. the victim is in critical condition. as far as the gunman d.c. police have not released any information on that whether or not they have a person in custody or if the assailant got the away but we'll keep on top of it. megan mcgrath is on the way to the scene. new this morning, this is the view you need to see, this fire ripped through this home in montgomery county this morning. we're still working to find out what caused the fire and whether anyone was inside the home when it started. look at all those flames there. this was at a home on olney laytonsville road. firefighters had their work cut out for them trying to get the flames under control. we'll bring you updates on news 4. >> and the road still closed there. first back to tom kierein,

4:31 your weather and traffic on the 1s. >> big change. good morning. yesterday near 50 degrees. we're still above freezing now but it will be getting below freezing later this morning. so going to have patchy ice. the afternoon will be turning colder. weather headlines for this monday this cold person is going to continue. another surge of arctic air coming in later today. temperatures right now, though are in the mid to upper 30s all across virginia maryland much of west virginia. we'll stay above freezing for another two or tree hours. storm team 4 radar showing a few scattered snow flurries around the region. they should not be accumulating on anything. anything that falls is melting. and the hour by hour forecast throughout the day, we'll have temperatures dropping throughout the day. done below freezing by 8:00 this morning, down into the 20s thi with a blustery wind and mostly cloudy sky. coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s a look at the hour by hour temperature drop later tonight into tomorrow

morning. looking pretty good right now taking a look at 66 95 here in virginia no major issues into or out of town. beltway at d'arcy road also moving alo nicely. montrose road at 270, these folks, i came down this way, and we weren't having any issues at this point this morning. is this a house fire we just showed you, laytonsville 108 between rig oigs and golf view drive. fire just happened there. one northbound lane is getting by at this point. your alternate is 124. you can work your way over to get down into town if you need to this morning. that's a bit of a mess there. and 15 at lohr road all lanes blocked because of some downed wires. yo alterna is old frederick road. today the second trial of a d.c. officer accused of trying to kill his wife is expected to get you said way in prince

george's county. prosecutors say sampson lawrence attacked his wife in their prince george's county home in november of 2013. they say he hit her with a metal lamp post. the fire started when lar rens became frustrated while trying to hang a flat screen tv. lawrence is facing attempted murder and assault charges. a jury failed to reach a verdict back in july. a hearing will under way in the case of a deadly attack in loudoun county from 2009. anthony roberts was indicted earlier this month. charges stem from the brutal attack on william and cynthia bennett in lansdowne. william was killed roberts was indicted on 11 counts. new problems for metro this morning after smoke incidents at several stations, including e where a woman died last month. passengers having as evacuated trains. the metro says the problem is a

mechanical issue, but it's not created the smoke. yesterday there was a smoke report somewhere between foggy bottom and roslyn. responded to both stations. trains were delayed, passengers left standing on the platform. over the weekend, there were four incidents at metro station. one at l'enfant plaza and woodley park station had to be evacuated. >> makes me want to get a car sooner but as long as they have an evacuation plan which i don't think -- well, i think they need to work on it because if so many people were put in the hospital the last time obviously something's not working. >> officials checked all the stations and found no issues. metro says it does experience more mechanical issues when it gets extremely cold. d.c. will now reinspect the entire street car system after this fire on one of the cars. the d.c. transportation department says the car started sparking on saturday night, but when the -- but the fire went out on its own. the vehicle operator was not harmed. the street cars still run

simulated service only. we're working to find out whether there is an issue with d.c. manholesco crews responded to 15 that were smoking. they shut down a few blocks because the covers were launching in to the air. we're told this is a direct result of the weather because salt and ice reekleak into underground equipment. there is a meeting tonight about the future of rockville park. leaders of the plan will talk about making room for new parks and retail space while preserving neighborhoods and viable roads and rail service. there is another meeting on wednesday followed by the final one one week from today. 4:35 right now. tonight you'll also have a chance to weigh in on a montgomery county police station in bethesda. public meeting is set for 7:00 p.m. on edgemore lane. the new second district police station will be built on rugby avenue. we'll tell you what one

holding in some of the warmth from yesterday. right now storm team 4 radar showing scattered flurries west virginia virginia, maryland. just passing true from time to time. not accumulating at all. just a few scattered flurries over the next few hours. hour by hour today watch out, we'll be getting below freezing by around 8:00 this morning. so what is wet now turning to ice. by noontime blustery winds down to the upper 20s. a little sunshine. mid-20s by late afternoon. then over the next 24 hours, the temperatures continue to drop. by 8:00 p.m. down to the low 20s. then down to the teens by 11:00 tonight. and by this time tomorrow morning, it will be down all the way into the low and mid teens. a look at how much longer this cold pattern will last that's coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s at 4:51. melissa has a water main break. where is this? in southeast washington. we're talking about 19th street between savannah and tremont, we have the road closed.

developing from the live desk this morning, a ferry disaster in bangladesh. 70 confirmed dead. that's half the number of people that were onboard that ferry when will it was hit by a cargo vessel and capsized. the ferry has been pulled to the surface and towed back to shore. 140 passengers were on the ferry. the certainly has been called off right now for any additional victims, but those in charge of the rescue operation say that river will continue to be monitored. that is the latest from the live desk this morning. ♪ i go to the hills when my heart is lonely ♪ >> aun expect tribute from lady gaga. this year music played a big role in the annual academy

president obama will be working with governors from around the country, they're in washington for a winter conference. the president r for e governors last night, mopping them governor scott walker. over the weekend, the "washington post" reported that you can with aer said he doesn't know whether the president is a christian. the president did not address that issue, but did say he's committed to reaching across the aisle. >> within this room, we're not going to agree on everything. but i am committed to working with each and every one of you over the next two years to keep making progress. >> today will be the governor's only chance to meet with the president. chilling new pictures to show you this morning purportedly from isis. the terrorist group says it is training dozens of children. you can see the children here do being exercises and taking lessons. isis says several of the children are syrian. this is not the first time isis has released video that shows children in training. in just a few hours, you can watch the

interview with the family of the woman isis killed. savannah guthrie sat down with kayla mueller's family the last known american hostage held by isis. we learned she died earlier this month. her father says he dwnt th that didn think that had to be the case. >> we tried, we asked but they put policy in front of american citizens' lives. >> savannah also talked to mueller's mother and brother. you can see the interview on "today." later today the largest cigarette makers company lawyers head to the supreme court. they're fighting an order that demands they had mitt they lied about the das of smoking. in 2006 a judge ordered tobacco companies to create an ad campaign saying they misled the public for decades. the companies say the ads would completely destroy consumers' faith in their word. doctors are treating at least 11 students at wesleyan university for symptoms of a drug overdose.

the university says the symptoms are consistent with the use of the drug mollie. at least three students are in critical condition this morning. some students were taken to the hospital from hair dorm rooms. others checked themselves into the hospital. 4:51 right now. tom, can we live in yesterday for a few days? just a little bit longer? >> yeah, just rewind it a few hours. but so far we're getting a rebreeze from the iciness that may not be developing for another couple of hours anyway. >> but it's getting colder. >> yeah temperatures will be plummeting. and we are seeing a few scattered flurries. moving gray scattered flurry in the mountains and locally around the metro area, a few patches of gray in montgomery and frederick counties to our south, as well. prince william and fairfax and toward stafford and west across northern virginia into fauquier county. everything that is falling is melting. we have temperatures above freezing so the melting snow

from yesterday that has pushed water all across many roads is still just wet. and it looks like this this morning. just wet pavement but this is going to become icy by about 8:00 this morning. that's when we'll likely see the temperatures dropping getting below freezing. so at the bus stop this morning, for students boarding on time a little above freezing. and then later boarding will be into the upper 20s to just near 30 degrees. so some of that water will freeze up and call some patchy ice on sidewalks, as well. so could be slippery going. and for the morning commute, that patchy ice develops by 8:00 to 9:00 this morning and then for the afternoon commute anything that drooi doesn't dry out today will be patchy ice. and keep up with all the changes with the storm team 4 weather app. tomorrow morning, we plunge all the way down to the low and mid teens. this cold pattern continues tomorrow staying below freezing. highs only around 30. then maybe briefly before freezing on wednesday. then another surge of cold air comes in with a chance of

flurries on thursday. staying below freezing all the way through saturday. and then finally above freezing on sunday. but dry. don't really have any major snow at all. just a few flurries this morning and again perhaps on thursday. breaking news 95 northbound if virginia here at lorton road a car fire. firefighters just got to the scene here. lo started putting this out, but it was really going a couple minutes ago. at least one lane blocked, that's the report we get. i can't imagine firefighters are actually letting anybody through. i'm assumes all lanes are blocked there. philadelphia avenue at piney branch road that is completely shut down. alternate is blair road. in laytonsville, 108 between riggs and golf view drive, only one northbound lane getting pie. your alternate 124 because of the earlier house fire. beltway at colesville, everything moving quite nicely. same thing 95 in maryland and bw parkway. a live picture of 270 coming up.

a two hour delay today for warren county public schools. you will need to spend a little more money to fill up your gas tank. aaa says gas prices are up because brood oil costs are up. the driver's club says this is the start of the refinery maintenance season. in d.c. the average is $2.45 a gallon. in maryland $2.32. in virginia it's $2.18. and in west virginia, the average price is $2.13. news 4 is committed to changing minds. we want to let you know about a summit today that focuses on helping teens when it comes to mental health. the josh anderson foundation begins7:00 p.m. at the ernst community cultural center. young adults will share their personal struggles with mental health issues and after that parents will have a chance to discuss the issues with teens on the panel. we're learning more about the first steps in the project to give the alexandria waterfront a facelift. in just over a week the

alexandria city council will determine its plan to fix flooding there. the council told "washington post" it plans to focus on infrastructure before changing the way the waterfront looks. you will see some changes such as when the old dominion boat club moves to make way for a new parg. the "post" says it could be many years before all the changes are made. some good news for folks who lobbied hard to save omni ride buses from wood bridge to tysons corner. that service will continue according to a report from inside nova.com. public outcry led leaders to change their minds about ending it. in the day ahead, a new family shelter will open up in fairfax county. the katherine k. henley is offers homes called kate's place. they're for low income and formerly homeless families. there is a welcome home event at 1:00 this afternoon. 4:58. in the week ahead, students in stafford county will duct tape their principal to a wall.
