breaking news. there's a verdict tonight in the so-called "american sniper" trial. within the last hour eddie ray routh was found guilty of the murders of "american sniper" author and former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle and a friend. closing arguments were held in the case this afternoon. routh had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. with the state not seeking the death penalty the verdict means routh will get an automatic life se> nor on on a deadly pedestrian accident news 4's chris gordon talked with him this evening and joins us with what he had to say. >> r court documents say the driver was on drugs, prescrip pain killers and possibly pcp, which is illegal and disorienting. and toni driver's in the d.c. jail being held without bond. police say the suv driver was fleeing an accident after

hitting two cars a block away on h street he took down a traffic pole smashed into a mar well wall and flipped hitting two pedests killing 27-year-old phillip snodgrass. hello, this is chris gordon from news 4. tonight i spoke by phone to in baltimore, maryland he was very compassionate, loving young man that had tremendo promise. very very very many friends. philip snodgrass was assistant general counsel here at the national federation of federal employees, negotiin contracts and repres feder workers in legal proceedings. he was so tragic and so unexpect and frankly devastg to staff here and to so many federal employees he's helped across the country. philip snodgrass was on his way to georgetown law center where he was attending night classes. court papers charge 33-year-old

now. > details on that awful train/trk collision in southe california. police are now holding the truck driver on suspicion of felony hit and run. the guy apparently abandoned the truck on the tracks in oxnard califo where a metrolink commut train slammed into it this mornin 30 people were injured including four who are said to still be in critical condition. it is not clear why the truck driver had been on the tracks in first place. an update now to a story we first told you about in 2013. a northern virg man helped convict a baseball coach who molest him decades ago. jackie bn reports that inspir him to begin an effort to change how virginia streets and labels sex offenders. >> repor a year and a half after he watched his former t-ball coach run from our cameras outside the prince william county courthouse rob, who prefers that we not u name waits to see if terry mcauliffe will sign into law

significant changes. the district's department of transportatio warns that the project will cause delays. they're fueling up you're paying the tab. tonight the news 4 i-team is exposing gome workers illegally swiping government credit cards to buy gasoline for themselves. the i-team's scott macfarlane shows how a growing number of employees are pulling it off and the federal agents trying to catch them doing it. >> reporterwe caht up with terrell mccray as he left the d.c. courthouse. but he didn't want to talk. shielding his face and hustling back towards the doors. i'm scott with channel 4. when we trio out his recent arre and the case that landed him in court this is the response we got. can you tell us anything about these gasoline thefts. mccray is a staff assistant at the d.c. fire department. who investigators say illegally used his federally issued purchase card to buy more than

$2600 in gasoline for his own personal use just since august. at several gas stations in northwest d.c. including th bp station on rhode island avenue. some of the gas, according to court records mccray used in his personal jaguar and some of the gas he's accused of selling to other people for 50 cents on the dollar. and terrell mccray isn't the only person arrested for this. lanier white is another. you're watching video obtained by the i-team. it shows white illegally filling someone else car with a government gas card he'd taken from the ft. monroe military base. white was convict of conspiracy to more than a quarter of a million dollars in taxpayer funded gas along with an associate and is currently spending ti in a federal prison. >> theye er the country. they're wher the government needs automobiles and transportatt get places. >> reporter: the acting inspecting general which

nbcwashingtoco clickn "investigations." doug's here with more about our weather. well, are weo break any records tonight? >> no. >> excellent news. >> that's a good thing. really amazing, 4 below zero is where we were early this morning. it won't get close to that tonight. but still the cold side. take a look right now, yeah, cold for sure. we saw cloud cover earlier now starting to see clearing skies. that will allow temperatures to fall absent but a little bit of wind too. 25 degrees bringing our windchill down to 17. current numbers 18 in manassas 14 in frederick, 14 in martinsburg numbers will fall a little bit gh but we're not talking another night where most of the area to the west of d.c. was around zero. that won't be the case, but still quite cold when you get up in the morning. radar all clear. it will stay that way for the next 24 hours. one storm syst moved off.

we saw snow showers with it down around southern maryland, salisbury a ocean city. we have so much cold air across the eastern part of the country that this next storm is going to be a big time winter storm for areas like dallas, right over towards portions of arkansas mississippi, alabama atlanta under a winter storm warning and the winter storm watches go all the way to the coast around the virginia beh area. this storm should stay just to the south so most of the moisture wi t to the south too. but let's go ahead and track that with fure weather. here we are 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, not much going on in our area. but we're watching this snow off to the east. some areas of alabama could pick up to 3 to 6 inches of snow. that would be a historic storm down there. watch as it starts to move our direction. i do think we'll see snow early thursday morning. here we are at 6:00 a.m. the bulk of the snow down to the south and east. zoom in here a little bit. here's d.c., here's
