alert day today. snow is starting to pick up outside. you're taking a live look at the conditions in rockville, maryland. the snow starting to stick to the ground already. >> this is a day you'll want to curl up on the couch and watch some tv. take a look at all that is in store for us today. snow sleet, freezing rain. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us now with the fo >> stay inside and off the roads because they're not going to be that favorable for driving. outside conditions right now, everyone is still well below the freezing mark. our tower camera looking towards the national cathedral. the snow which is very evident, you can still see it out there. it's eased up just a touch. national harbor very light snow pellets coming down from the skies in prince george's county. the overall impact weather will have on your day, moderate to high impact. the roads will get a little slick and a little it's see and

we're still well below freezing. 29 in washington 28 in fredricksburg, 27 in frederick maryland. essentially route 50 i-66 is the dividing line. north of there mostly snow. south of there a lot of sleet and freezing rain starting to mix in. this is where roads will be the most treacherous because the accumulation of that light freezing rain can do a lot of damage on the roadways. snow at least has a little more crunchy friction to it at times. temperatures will inch their weigh above the freezing 345rk but just barely with the mix of mostly snow changing over to sleet or freezing rain later this afternoon. coming in around 7:00, 8:00 this evening. the slick spods will go into your monday morning. the weather is causing cancellations in our area right now. charles, st. mary's calvert counties. we'll check out the conditions in rockville. news 4's derrick ward out there live. what's it looking like derrick?

>> reporter: pretty much more of the same. i think we're in a little lighter phrase right now. take a look at the sidewalk around here as you can see it starting to coat. an interesting thing, i found out the hard way, i took a fall a few minutes ago. when the snow falls it may cover some of the ice along the sides and along parking lots. you think you're stepping into soft small and sooner or later you lose your footing. we didn't get video. sorry. use your imagination. something to be concerned about on the roadway, starting to pick up a spray, melting snow on your windshield will provide some moisture. you want tock your reservoir for windshield wiper flute.id. in maryland they're treating the roads, they're asking folks to delay or cancel trips even simply because they have to get their equipment out here and make sure the roads are passable. again, the saving grace of the storm is it's happening on the weekend, so a little less

carolton she was wearing tan khakis a pink sweatshirt and a black pea coat. this week marks one year since the disappearance of relisha rudd. a vigil is planned for today at 2:00 at the mount paron baptist church. she was last seen with khalil tatum, a former janitor at a shelter where she was living. we still don't know what happened to relisha. d.c. says it's making more money than it first thought. the cfo says he's expecting an extra $37 million this year. that would lower the $250 million gap the mayor and city council have to cover in the budget. the mayor submits her budget plan next month. a developing story out of madison, wisconsin, where police are looking for someone they say opened fire outside of this mall. you can look at this video and

see police on alert there. they searched the area and found shell casings outside. police say the shooter was fighting with some people inside the food court before they went outside. after the shooting the person ran away and no one was hurt. as of today, there's a brand new program designed to keep you safe on the roads in frederick county maryland. sheriffs are handing out fines if they see you talking on your phone behind the wheel. $83 the first time $140 the second time and $160 for a third offense. we're told the program will go through at least the end of april. the slit-second decision that saved a number of lives when a roof started to collapse at an ice rink with kids inside. >> storm team 4 radar very active right now. snow coming down in a lot of places. it's the isolator today that you should be concerned about. chuck bell will tell you about all the timing.

good morning once again. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell at 10:08. the rain-snow line has moved in. snow in northern maryland freezing rain and sleet in southern maryland the northern neck. road conditions are going downhill very, very quickly. any untreated surface especially in southern maryland has a glaze of freezing rain on it. use extreme caution or completely delay or ignore travel outside today. let the road crews get ahead and stay ahead of all this. another complete check of when the timing comes to an end and when we may get close to 60 degrees coming up. >> take us there, chuck, take us there. >> blink, we're there.

we showed you this close call for kids and parents in massachusetts. >> this picture was tweeted out idea. it's an indoor ice rink where part of the roof collapsed sen difficult. >> jeff sever son has more on the split decision that caved lives. >> reporter: crashing down with little notice, part of the roof over the canton metropolis skating rink is now gone. >> we thought why are we alive. >> reporter: 7:00 a.m., the norwood youth hockey team just started practicing inside when immediately started screaming to get off the ice. i knew that wasn't a natural sound. >> reporter: that split second decision saved lives. >> seven kids we were staring at that were right underneath where it lapsed. luckily mike's voice was so loud it forced them to move. >> reporter: 15 seconds later, the roof gave way. this is what it looked like inside. >> right as we got to probably

where the penalty box is one of the other coaches and the mother went past us and the roof collapsed right in front of us. >> reporter: even though the collapse happened at the other end of the rink, the force of it actually blew out this wall creating more damage. >> blew us backwards, blew everybody else off their feet. >> reporter: firefighters say heavy snow brought the roof down. the coaches among the adults that helped get all the kids to safety. >> every single coach out there did a great job today. >> reporter: remarkably no one was injured. they said they were doing what anyone else was. >> i didn't think twice. i know none of the other coaches did either. >> amazing. that tells you about all the snow they've been getting in boston. >> as a result of this, a lot of the ice rinks out there, because of the threat this could happen again, they've been closed down. talk about a serious close call. >> close call. >> they're still inspecting the scene looking into it.

through one rainy lens and then another at the white house there. >> not far from one another. >> not far from one another, that's right. the wintery mix working its way into the region right now. >> i think that tells you kind of the mixed bag we're getting today. expecting snow sleet, freezing rain. all that coming our way. it is a weather alert day at nbc4. chuck bell is timing out the forecast for us. >> meanwhile, u.s. relations with venezuela are falling ap past. the president there says he's now banning some american politicians and accusing the u.s. of espionage. nicholas maduro said they would be barred from entering the country. he detained a pilot he said was spying for the united states. the pilot has since been release. no doubt a wild week from a political standpoint. it came down to the wire to avoid a shutdown of the department of homeland security. >> a brand new straw poll about who the republican nominee for

he clearly bused in enough supporters. 41% of folks that participated want to legalize marijuana. that's not exactly where conservative republican thought is on that issue. that said what we did learn is there is a primary going on to be the conservative alternative to jeb bush. rand paul scott walker ben carson ted cruz all those guys that finished ahead of jeb bush they're in that primary and want to be the conservative alternative to jeb bush. you can see there is a lot of potential there, if one candidate can coalesce conservatives, jeb is in trouble. thousands of federal workers in our area get to go back to their jobs this week. homeland security funded but it's just for another week. >> the question is are we going to go week to week to week here? house republican leaders know this is playing out as a disaster. they wanted a debate about immigration and executive authority, it's a debate about security. they know they've lost the pr battle. the question is how do they land

this plane? they're hoping the courts make a ruling that says the president can't start implementing his immigration action. if it's delayed another week or two, we could be seeing a series of these one-week one-week. it's tough on the workers who have to -- by the way, even if they have no funding, most of these folks have to go to work without pay. they'll eventually get paid but that's not very good. who is going to perform their job 100% if they're not sure they're getting paid that week. >> exactly. so much at stake. chuck will be talking all about that on "meet the press" at 10:30 right after "news 4 today." new this morning, disney land is working to reopen the it's a small world after all ride after a big fire there. take a look. firefighters in anaheim say one of the park's many fireworks

down south of town. this is going to be a tricky day. outside pictures are always worth a thousand words. there's our tower camera. frozen raindrops now on the lends. not much in the way of snowflakes left in northwest washington. still plenty more snow to our north. some of our great weather watchers angie you'll like this one here. this is one of our better weather watchers but not one of our better photographs. great shot, bob, but you have to turn the camera the other way. just a trace of snow on the snowman's hat. isaiah duprey caught a red fox in silver spring. no doubt he's out there looking for something to eat. rick in amesville, a coating of frozen rain on the leaves out there towards the blue ridge. so watch out for that. anything that's untreated is going to be glazed over. john in ft. washington phd, this is what a lot of rand rails

will look like. that fine coating of glazed ice on there. use extreme caution if you're going to be walking around outside today. winter weather adviseory continues through the overnight hours tonight. most of the sleet, freezing rain and snow will come to an end by 8:00 tonight. it will be mainly dry overnight with temperatures potentially dropping back below freezing there could be a black ice problem tomorrow morning. still below freezing in town. still below freezing everywhere from the mason-dixon line all the way down to the northern neck. temperatures today should climb above freezing but it may not be until after 6:00 7:00 8:00 when most of the precipitation has stopped. if we can stay above freezing overnight, that would be great news. your hour by hour tomorrow slick spots possible through about 6:00 in the morning. 40 by noon mid 40s tomorrow afternoon with a nice dry northwest wind. road conditions will improve dramatically once the sun comes up tomorrow morning.

an icy mix today. 33. slick spots possible overnight, 31. tomorrow breezy and temperatures into the mid 40s. you can see the dry slot here that's trying to punch up through central virginia may briefly turn off the rain and snow threat here for the next couple hours. any time we have that little glazing out there, that's what does people in the most is that little coating because you don't take it seriously enough. future weather continues on with the chance of sleet or rain through about 6:00 or 7:00 this evening before things start to dry out. quik check on your seven-day forecast. 30s today, 40s tomorrow. 30s but rain moving in tuesday afternoon. it will be all rain wednesday, not quite 60 but feeling close at 57. that may actually end with a rain-snow mix as well. >> thanks chuck. i know that he is promising spring is coming. we are going to believe you i guess. here is a sirngs right? we are already talking about the cherry blossoms the new

january's deadly smoke incid public policy institute is hosting a debate for the purple line tomorrow at the afi silver theater and cultural center in silver spring. the purple line is a planned light rail system that will connect bethesda and new carrollton metro stations. we're also looking forward to spring of course. this week we could learn when the cherry blossoms could bloom on tuesday. that will be a press conference to predict the peak bloom at the museum at 10:00 a.m. opening day for the nationals is a little more than a month away. when the team takes the field at nats park the face of the franchise, ryan zimmerman will be trotting out to a position fans aren't used to seeing him at. jason pugh has more from nats spring training camp on zimmerman's move to first. >> reporter: ryan zimmerman is making the transition from third base to first base this season. it's the same transition his
