"news 4 today" continues at 5:00 a.m.. right now a sloppy serving of winter weather to start your thursday. radar showing a big snowstorm getting ready to unload on us. it will could be the worst storm of the season for the metro d.c. area. >> most of you are you seeing rain outside of your windows right now. tom kierein has been busy on the timing of all the snow. here is a look at the radar now and his latest models are showing a bit of a change. >> good morning. it is 5:00 a.m.. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. let's check in with tom and a amelia for our forecast. >> monday it was looking like a light wintry mix on thursday.

then tuesday like oh, maybe it will be more than that. models were showing more and more toward snow. and then it was obvious yesterday that we were going to get quite a bit of accumulating snow. but the models have been up and down. >> the big thing that we're focusing on is when does the changeover actually happen there rain to sleet to snow and right now we're splitting hair but we're starting to see the changeover that chuck just showed us. >> he's out in frederick where they're getting sleet and snow right now. and that's where we see the areas of white and gray that is snow and that is stretching from our region all the way down to texas. it's moving off to the north and east. the pink zone a little bit of sleet mixing with rain in washington northern prince george's county northern anne arundel. south of there, just some light rain falling. rest of southern and eastern suburbs all the way down through north central virginia and on the eastern shore, but it's north and west of us this is the zone that is getting some snow right now some big flakes are falling in the bright white zone. that's just northwest p

frederick. and just to the west of thurmont. west of there across most of washington county now getting accumulating snow. that stretches into the panhandle of west virginia. right now snowing along 81 from hagerstown down to martinsburg. very light snow farther south of there toward winchester. and this will continue to move our way here through the morning, but we won't get a lot of the accumulating snow until late morning into the afternoon because look at our temperatures, they're still well above freezing. hagerstown at 33 near 40 in washington. total amounts of snow by the time this tapers off tonight, 4 to 6 inches metro area, southern suburbs. farther north and west, all the way into the mountain 6 to 8 inch amounts will be common. we'll be looking at the hour by hour changes on the way and timing that's coming up next weather and traffic on the 1st at 5:11. chuck bell is seeing some of the mix.\on the 1st at 5:11. chuck bell is seeing some on the 1st at 5:11. chuck bell is seeing some of ton the 1st at 5:11. ch >> reporter: we're on i-70 going west.

the temperature in the last five minutes has gone from 34 down to 31 degrees and we have absolutely seen the change over from what was just light rain to a very heavy mix of wet snow and sleet pellets. so now here we are at interstate 70 west of frederick and the snow is starting to stick on the sides of the roads. the main travel lanes remain clear. they put plenty of chemical down. we went over the flyover there from 270 on to 70 near frederick and that was very well treated with road chemical. out here on 70 westbound, there is chemical down on the road, but you can definitely start to see the snowflakes. this will only continue to get worse. as i mentioned our temperature drop from 34 down to 31 degrees. so we are at the transition point here from frederick county maryland and it will eventually work its way all the way into the metro area. we have our pat collins snow stick ready to go. no accumulations just yet. but we have it ready to go just in case.

melissa mollet how is traffic? chuck and i just spoke, as well. he was telling me where he is west of here, of course's he's seeing the light sleet and snow. this is 70 right there at the 270 junction. so just seeing a little bit of moisture there falling from the sky right now in the way of rain. 270 the at middlebrook road, you can see the moisture on the leps.leps lens. we still have the closure 14th street at cedar street. 66 and 95 actually looking quite good. same thing when you take a look at prince george's county,off all no major problems there. i'm back at 5:11 with a live picture of 95 in maryland. right now the federal government is closed. if you are an emergency employee opm says check with your agency to see if you have to come in today. right now d.c. fairfax

montgomery, prince george's county and prince william coun are all closed. >> frederick county, howard anne arundel schools closed, as well. along with charles, st. mary's and calvert. arlington, loudoun, spotsylvania stafford closed in virginia. also closed fauquier culpeper rappahannock and king george. alexandria fredericksburg, falls church manassas city and maeps park schools are all closed as well. and in west virginia we just learned that berkeley jefferson, grant, morgan an mineral county schools are all closed today. we have complete list scrolling on the bottom of your screen and also on on the nbc washington app. right now if you look out the window, you're probably just seeing rain falling. but that will containing to snow later this morning. we have team coverage of this incoming winter storm as much as 8 inches of snow could fall in montgomery county today. megan mcgrath is live in gaithersburg to show us why this is a ricktricky storm to get ready

for. >> reporter: and it's because of the rain coming first. we're here at the salt doun dome in gaithersburg and you can see the front end loader is moving the salt around. just a few minutes ago, they actually filled up a truck and that rubbing went out and hits the highway here. they're standing by waiting for that switchover. we'll get the sleet first and then things will switch over to snow. and because of all of the rain that we had overnight, and we're still seeing very light rain here in gaithersburg right now that makes it almost impossible to pre-treat the roads. any kind of chemical that they would put down would just be washed away. and i spoke to a state highway person and he talked about this kind of storm and why it's tricky. >> no pretreatment, for example. we have people on the road because they think it's just rain. they can't hear the radio and tv surprise. and so we have to work around them and with them and thankfully some people are hearing about staying off the roads. so that's great. >> reporter: and you can see

that they're gearing up here although a lot of the trucks have already gone out and are on standby waiting for that mix to start and then as we go into the snow, they will start their plowing operation. they're asking people, though to be aware of the situation. don't just look out your window see rain and figure that you can go out about your normal business. they are ask you to stay put in order to get the roads in proper shape in order to plow. they will need room out there. and if there is a lot of traffic, they won't be able to do their job. and we are expecting this to start to switch over very soon later on this morning. megan mcgrath, youu news 4. some changes you should know about on metro because of the winter storm. rains will start on time and running both below and above ground. however, the agency says there could be some weather related delays today. metrobuses under a moderate snow plan which means some routes will be suspended.

you can see snow is moving in to the area. frederick county maryland now seeing snow. tom is timing out the change over to snow. we have new school closings. hampshire and hardy county schools in west virginia are closed. shenandoah and winchester county schools are closed as well. make sure you have the nbc washington app for the complete list. it is now just about 5:12. d.c. car owners if you parked on a show emergency road, you have to remember to move your car before 7:00 a.m.. that is when the snow emergency goes in to effect. tickets up to $250 plus you have

good morning. i'm tom kierein. the radar is changing minute by minute. we're getting more snow now here just north and west of the metro area and sleet is in the pink zone from the northern shenandoah valley prince william, parts of loudoun, fairfax, montgomery and a little bit of sleet mixing with rain right here in northwest washington northern prince george's county, northern anne arundel county. the bright white frederick along 15 interstate 70 to hagerstown and 81 down to winchester it is snowing there now. a look at the totals coming up at 5:21. i'm molette green at the live desk keeping our eye on air travel this morning. more than 2300 flights canceled so far. we're watching the numbers go up every hour. here is the breakdown. reagan national, 192 cancellations. at dulles 94. and bwi marshall, 92.

if you have a flight out of town before you head out, you need to call your airline. back to you. our storm team is tracking the changes in your neighborhoods right now. derrick ward is live in vienna virginia. derrick, so what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: good morning. again, what we're seeing right now is a let up in the rain as a barely perceptible drizzle falling right now. you see route 123 behind me just remains wet. certainly passable. but again, this is what we're expecting now and a big change later on. if you take a look over here on the second day road, you see part of the all hands on deck effort by vdot. 3800 vehicles out at the ready to start treating the roads once the conditions become favorable for that. we've also seen on the way up here some smaller contract maybe pickup truck plow blades and salt dispensers in the back.

sand and salt dispensers to make sure parking lots and some of the secondary roads are treated as well. because it looks like some of those businesses may indeed be open once the snow starts to fall. but again, preparing for all hands on deck here in virginia vdot is asking people not to travel if they don't have to and if you park your car, they're asking if they park this your driveway or the odd numbered side of the street so they can get through and treat the roads. but for now a lull in the action. derrick ward news 4. >> and this just in two more school closing. frederick county virginia and washington county maryland both closed this morning. news 4 has you covered on all fronts. coming up in ten minutes, darcy spencer is live in laurel checking on preparations in prince george's county. 5:19. in our other top stories a former maryland prison guard facing attempted murder charges.

hong young is connected in a string of shootings that started near arundel mills and followed by incidents at laurel and mall in columbia. most recent tuy night at ft. meade. investigators found ten legally owned weapons including hundreds of rounds of ammunition. a teen is in custody for helping another young man travel to syria to join isis. police are investigating whether he tried to recruit other woodbridge teens to join the terrorist group. police stepping up security around the embassy in seoul after a rightening knife attack on the u.s. ambassador. a man slashed ambassador mark lippert in the face and arm. the suspect is in custody right now. bystanders tackled him after the attack. he's 55-year-old man with anti-war views. doctors say ambassador will suffer some paralysis in his face and arm and ambassador tweeted he's doing okay.

you may think you can escape the snow in hawaii. think between. summits expected to get more than a foot of snow. snow is not that rare there. the snowfall is expected at the highest elevations above 12,000 feet. we may be getting the most intense winter weather today but spring is nearly here. down in florida the nationals will be playing hair first spring training game today. how about that? they will face the mets this afternoon. not to make you feel bad, but it's 68 degrees right now. with a high of 84 degrees. >> why would any even put that in the script for us? that upsets me. >> i need a moment. >> after we get rid of this snow we'll be okay right? >> just okay. just okay. >> we'll take okay. >> nothing like spring training. but search feel like winter now. >> it took forever for winter to

get here. now that it's here, it won't leave. >> just doesn't want to give it up at least in the overall trend. this will be the last of it for the foresealeable future but right now we're getting it. all the gray and white is snow. and that stretches between here all the way to texas. so we have a lot more to get through. right now the pink zone that's where we're getting some sleet. northern anne arundel, northern prince george's county montgomery fairfax, loudoun, prince william, fauquier stafford farther south getting rain. it's raining on the eastern shore as well the area will green. but this is snow. the bright white zone, snow has big flakes now coming down from hagerstown along 68 and interstate 70 north. and interstate 81, down between hagerstown to martinsburg and winchester winchest. s sticking. just checked the road temperatures they are a little below freezing there. so watch out for that. here is the timing on snow arriving in the metro area. by 9:00 a.m. still maybe sleet mixing with some snow but then

by 10:00 11:00, that's when we'll see the changeover to the accumulating snow in the metro area. snow coming down pretty hard between noon and around 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.. that's when we'll get most of the accumulating snow. after 6:00 it will begin to taper off, but it will still be snowing heavily northern neck southern maryland lower eastern shore between 6:00 to 8:00. and then it will be tapering off quickly and by late evening, we'll just have a few lingering flurries. temperatures right now are above freezing, but where that snow is coming down, 4 to 6 inches metro area. by the time it ends tonight, 6 to 8 inches north and west. later amounts eastern shore. it will have a big impact on roads later today. >> absolutely. and as you showed with future weather and that changeover from sleet to snow away the late morning and midday hours, that's when road conditions really start to deteriorate and become treacherous into the afternoon and evening hours with heavy snow at sometimes reduced visibilities as well.

cancellations today are definitely the right call. so here are the road impacts before 8:00 a.m. if you have to head out and do something within the next 2 1/2 hours. do it now because we're look at mainly only wet roads. but we're already starting to see some of the snow stick well north and west of the d.c. area. between 8:00 and 11:00, we're tracking sleet changing over to snow. snow is sticking to roads at that point. and from noon to 6:00 p.m. that's really when we think road conditions are going to be the worst because of heavy snowfall at times and just a steady snow. so snow covered everywhere. and again, reduced visibilities. the good news like you you showed on future weather, at least this winds down tonight and that sets up up for a dry weekend. >> but we'll stay below freezing overnight tonight. so what is not treated will be treacherous overnight into tomorrow morning. we'll be down into the teens by this time tomorrow morning. when that snow is coming down we'll be in the 20s. so everything will be stick. it will stay in place on friday too. we'll stay below freezing all day with highs only below 30

but we'll have plenty of sunshine and then still staying below freezing overnight, finally above freezing saturday afternoon with a partly cloudy sky. and we spring forward, turn clocks ahead one hour saturday night. then sunday morning, near 30, but a lot of melting should be going on on sunday. ought to make it into the 40s. feast your eyes on the storm team 4 seven day outlook. into next week, warming into the 50s. monday, tuesday, wednesday. another look at that radar coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s. right now roads are just wet. we know this will change quite a bit. right here 66 at 123 into town, out of up tofof town just a wet sheen on the roadway. beltway at indian head will all roads looking similar. wide look at things, overall nice and group. hopefully you can stay home today because of the snow. that is headed our way. remember marc trains canceled,

see very small tlaks beginning to come down in the metro area. a big area of snow much farther to our west and that stretches all of the way down to texas. and that line of snow and moisture coming our way continuing to track north and east. green still rain down toward frederickburg. but pink zone we're getting a few flakes mixing in. southern montgomery into northern prince george's county and southern howard county and into anne arundel. then north and west, this is the zone we're getting small flakes now, but the brighter white is where the snowflakes are bigger and that's right up near hagerstown and over to near martinsburg. and very light snow northern then doughe shenandoah valley. the snow will be sticking by later today. by the time it ends this evening, 4 to 6 inches metro

see just wet, and a car going by there. we are seeing people out and about. a little while ago, i actually saw a bus dropping someone off at the bus stop. >> having a little trouble with megan's signal there, so we will try to get back with her in a little bit. 5:35. amtrak is running on reduced service due to this weather. trains between d.c. and new york will be running less frequently and that includes acela trains. if you to have a refrnservation, amtrak will call you and maybe you can check online. marc and vre, because the government is closed all service is canceled today. if you have to call a cab today, prices will be higher in the district. d.c. taxicab commission announced their snow emergency fares will go into effect

starting at 7:00 a.m.. that mean as flat $15 fee will be added to every meter charge. the hire fares remain in effect for 12 hours and the commission may extend the increase dependsfending on how much snow we get. pepco says it will work around the clock to keep your lights and heat on throughout the day. more than 400 contractors are standing by now to deal with any problems that may pop up. 5:36. and we are slowly seeing the snow start to creep into our area. >> these are live pictures now from vienna. and you can tell the roads are still wet. but snow is expected to come in big time. and apparently the snow is falling right here in washington, d.c.. we're seeing a few snowflakes. and this is because of the cold air. tom has your hour by hour

the snow has begun to fall in the district. take a look at the capitol building here. i can't quite see it but it is coming down. if you work for the government you get to stay home today. we could see several inches on the ground in the district by this afternoon. so no matter how much snow falls today, you will not be able to go sledding on capitol hill. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton asked to allow sledding for one day, but capitol police said no citing safety concerns. it is such a beautiful scene, but they have to think about safety first. there are plenty of other places to go sledding. >> i wore about these things.

that is heavier snow hagerstown down to martinsburg along 81. and that will begin to stick, too, because those road temperatures are a little below freezing very, very light snow, live view from the storm team 4 tower camera showing temperatures now in the 30s plummeting into the 20s during the afternoon. snow will be heaviest during the afternoon between noon and around 4:00 p.m.. it will be quickly tapering off and ending. by then 4 to 6 inches metro area. north and west 6 to 8 inch amounts. chuck bell is on i-81. where are you now? >> reporter: good morning. we are on i-81 just south of falling waters west virginia here in berkeley county. we're on the southbound sirds s sides. in the northbound side, there jackknifed tractor trailer about mile marker 23. that was on the northbound side. we're on the southbound side here. and you can totally tell the

of course that is expectedly to change rapidly. vdot is all hands on deck. 3800 pieces of equipment out and ready to standby. staging, ready to treat these roads when the conditions become acceptable for them on do that. in the meantime they're asking motorists that don't have to be out not to be out. and if they are at home to park their cars on the odd numbered sides of the streets or in driveways. that is again to make way for the plows to come through and treat those roadways. they will be treating hills and curves with sand for traction issues. it gives you a little bit of traction if you have to be out. but the fact that you might need to do something like that says maybe you shouldn't be out if you don't have to. we're live in vienna. derrick ward, news 4. snow emergency will affect some of your neighborhoods. the laurel police department is asking you to keep snow emergency routes clear. no parking is allowed even on the side of the street on those routes. you may be ticketed or towed

8 to 12 inches. they have flood warnings from the last storm. sleet, snow freezing rain slamming parts of texas all the way up to new england. and this morning we got word that states of emergency declared in alabama, mississippi, west virginia and new jersey this morning. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you. it's 5:51. so we've brought tom kierein into tell us about what is happening this morning. we know a lot of us dealt with the rain and now we're mixing with all sorts of things. >> it was rain in washington went to a little bit of snow and back to rain. it will be flipping back and forth here the next couple hour trying to make up its mind. but then eventually it will be feeling like winter for sure. we have a winter storm weather alert day, that means frequent updates all day long as the snow will be intensifying later. the snow stretches from new england all the way to east texas. that's that area in white on the radar. and that's a conveyor belt of that snow and sleet that will be moving right into our metro area

getting heavier as we get into the afternoon. right now the green is still some rain. just a little bit of rain mixing in here in washington now and south and east but the white zone that's where we are getting some snow very light snow now northern montgomery county but the brighter white area farther north and west that is a zone of heavier snow washington county, west of winchester. the timing on that snow getting closer to washington it will be a while yet. it won't be until 9:00, 10:00 this morning that we'll start to see some of the being aaccumulating snow. maybe a little sleet and rain between now and then. and then it will go all snow during the rest of the afternoon. most of the accumulation between noon and 5:00 or 6:00 p.m.. heavier snows after that southern maryland northern neck. and then just a few lingering flurries around #9:00 or 10:00. 6 to 8 inches north and west of washington. that includes montgomery, howard frederick, we were fairfax into loudoun, panhandle

of west virginia, northern shenandoah valley. 4 to 6 inches for southeast washington southern fairfax southern prince william, southern fauquier lighter amounts away the northern neck of virginia and southern maryland st. mary's and lower part of the eastern shore. amelia segal is live on the storm team 4 weather deck looking at the critical temperatures. >> reporter: and we'll see the temperatures in the suburbs drop first. washington will notice the temperatures here fall to around freezing likely by 10:00 a.m.. so here we are, the future temperature in your neighborhood at 7:00 a.m. notice just about all of the suburbs, culpeper manassas gaithersburg at or below 32 degrees. by 10:00 a.m., dees is.c. is right at that freezing mark. we continue to track snow and sleet. it will start to accumulate across the area. 1:00 is this when we'll be tracking some heavy snow reducing visibilities sticking to roads and piling up.

temperatures at that point for the most part are in the 20s. i'm on the storm team 4 weather deck and there is a light drizzle falling. we were tracking a little bit of snow out here earlier. but that has changed back over to rain. very light in nature. very damp and cold outside. i've also set up one of pat collins snow sticks with a gopro camera with the help of steve kaiser. so we'll be measuring the snow on a time lapse as it piles up. again early morning hours, kind of the calm at least here in baug before the. >> and once it starts coming down pl pile up fast. and then tonight, it will stay in place as we will stay below freezing all night as amelia just showed you temperatures in the 20s through the afternoon. they will drop into the teens by dawn tomorrow. and then during the day on friday just near 30 degrees tomorrow afternoon. average high this time of year is 53. so still going to be below average on saturday and again on sunday.
