it's just about 10 degrees outside of our studios in northwest washington this morning. that's not including the winds. we could see record cold. windchill advisories are also in effect right now for parts of the area. >> frigid cold turning any of the snow on the roads into ice this morning. we're keeping an eye on roads to help you in your commute. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm eun yang. and we're dealing with bitter cold. >> would he rewind to more like february temperatures. it is march 6 and it is feeling more like early february. temperatures right now down to 12 at dulles 17 at reagan national. new record at dulles. temperatures around the bay are in the mid teens. farther north and west, single digits. only 3 above zero.

front royal at 9. most of the region, a breeze a few subzero windchills. a windchill advisory in effect until 10:00. there is the sky over washington. we have a clear sky, and it will be a frigid morning. so dress accordingly. cold afternoon staying below freezing. and then a weekend warning trend is on the way. a look at the hour by hour temperatures coming up at 5:11. breaking news still have this problem 95 north in virginia at dale city. jackknifed tractor trailer right here in the middle of the roadway. main lanes are blocked. you'll have to take route 1 as your alternate. you can see some folks getting off to that exit. so just a warning between dumfries and dale city one of our producers said it's pretty icy there. so be careful.

beltway at river road, everything looking pretty good. i was impressed with 270 through rockville and outer loop as i was coming into work just wet really in those main lanes. did a good job in that section. woodrow wilson bridge no problems either way. but remember bridges, overpasses ramps all going to be quite slick still again this morning. prince george's county overall looking quite good. same thing looking at 95 in maryland and bw parkway. you'll have some extra time to get to work. the federal government is opening with a two hour delay arrival. you also have the option of taking unscheduled leave or telework. and take a look at our school closings and delays. you can see all of that red, all of those school districts are closed. the one holdout this green, that is alleghany county schools. they are still open. we just checked the school system's website and it says there is no change to the school calendar as of now. your drive to work will be tough today. all that slush we saw last night

froze over and it's making for some pretty treacherous driving conditions. you take a look here at i-270 north in montgomery county, you can see the highways are pretty clear there. but those side streets are likely still covered. adam tuss live on 50th street in northwest to show us how the streets are looking there. >> reporter: good morning. i want to give us a little bit of credit. i think our winter toughness is actually upping a little bit here. but want to show you what we're dealing with out here. if your car looks like in new york, good chance it will take you some time to just dig out of your spot. and then get on the road. and then the side streets, take a look what they look like. slush covered, it is a tough ride out here.main roads with some slick spots, as well. and then we caught up with a guy who was actually salting the sidewalk out here in northwest d.c.. that is something that a lot of

to be doing. we'll keep an eye on all of the roads throughout the region. we'll make a way up into montgomery county. and don't worry, aaron has offered to come out and clear your car for you once he gets done with the broadcast this morning. so he'll be ready to go with that. >> you can't hear on tv. just putting that out there. >> aaron you're so giving and generous. let me give you this news story. that's all i'm giving today. the other problem you will have driving this morning will be the on and off-ramps to the highways. any slush that was on the road last night again froze over turned to ice. vdot says it spent all night treating the roads with salt and sand. >> we're still going to continue to have nearly 4,000 trucks like we had at the height of the storm. >> and metrobuses up and running

again this morning, but with himmed service only as part of the moderate snow plan. some routes are suspended, others will see detours. bus service was halted last night around 9:00 due to snow, but today riders should expect longer wait times. metrorail riders will see normal weekday service. metrorail ran all day despite the snow. important information for you will all of you marc and vre riders. penn line operating on an s schedule. no service on camden or brunswick. vre also on the s schedule. new information about the plane crash involving harrison ford. for the first time we're hearing from the the person who pulled the actor out of that plane. a live look now from the weather deck. it looks like a little hat. 10 degrees outside. and it feels colder than that. we'll take a look at the temperatures hour

things are getting back to normal at local airports. almost 600 flights are canceled today across the country. right now reagan national reporting 38 dulles 5, bwi marshall only has 4. all the snow created havoc on air travel. 150 flights scheduled to leave bwi marshall were canceled

yesterday. we talked to one of those travelers whose flight landed safely but it took longer than normal because of the weather. >> we circled the airport for i think they said it was about 45 minutes trying to get a spot in line to come land. and when we finally landed we sat on the runway for another hour or so. >> another 134 incoming flights were also canceled yesterday because of all of that snow. and there is still a lot of spots that need to be cleaned up. even some major roads. >> it will take a little while until we get warmer air in here. fortunately no rain or snow to speak of this morning. 18 degrees though in tenleytown. it is a very cold start. >> tom kierein with your weather and traffic on the 1s. >> i have to adjust my computer here. sorry i had to step out for just a second. we have right now some very cold temperatures in the view from our sky camera here tower camera showing the sky over

washington now. and we have it clear now. we'll stay cold here with temperatures in the upper teens. mid teens between now and 8:00. but windchills will be near zero. and then by noontime much more comfortable windchills. but still below freezing in the mid 20s. by mid afternoon, up around 30 degrees. and by late afternoon back down to the upper 20s. just a few high clouds drifting in. and dress accordingly today, it will be a very cold day staying subfreezing. you'll need the sunglasses too, with the bright sun bouncing off the snow. a look at a warming trend for the weekend coming up at 5:21. breaking news once again, 95 north at dale city has reopened. thank goodness. we're seeing a bit of volume but it looks like traffic is getting by to the left side here. we did have an emergency vehicle off to the right kind of moving things away. but it's open that's all we need to care about this morning. taking a look in sterling, sean casey driving through sterling and tweeting @first4traffic as

well telling us roads a little bit of a mess here. this is irene johnson driving northbound on 270 looking pretty good right there, but she was saying between 370 and montgomery village, that area is pretty icy. new crash here toll road eastbound at hunter mill single car crash, but there is an injury. so that could be there a while. wider look at things overall looking pretty good. i'll come back with a live look of 66. frightening landing for more than 100 passengers in new york city. a plane skids off the runway at laguardia. this morning we're getting the first look at how passengers reacted after the accident. and we're keeping an eye on the roads in the storm team 4 x 4. frigid temperatures are making it difficult for plows to get all the snow up from yesterday. we have crews in several locations working to keep you

in this live picture. that snow is not going anywhere. it is really cold out there. want to check this with tom on the potentially record breaking cold. >> temperatures down to the low single digits with the windchills. near zero windchills all around the region. winds aren't blowing that hard. only running around 10 to 15 miles per hour. but the temperatures are hovering right in the mid teens or so. these counties in blue under a windchill advisory until 10:00 this morning. and that includes montgomery howard loudoun county fauquier points north and west. windchills hovering near zero, even subzero between now and 10:00 this morning. temperatures will stay in the teens throughout much of the morning, as well as we'll have bright sunshine diminishing winds during the afternoon. now let check on our road conditions around the region and we have amelia segal joining us live. where are you now? >> reporter: well, still here in the reston area.

and i have to say, clear skies out here. i think it's a full moon. i'll check on that and post it on twitter and facebook. and of course when you have clear skies, snow pack perfect setup for frigid temperatures. ir thermometer, surface temperature down to a minus 16. we're at the stratford condominiums. and if you're heading into work this is probably what you'll be looking at. snow on your car, snow around your car taking time to dig out. and probably neighborhoods secondary roads will be the worst. surfaces likely only treated once. the main roads have been treated all night long. i have to say, we have seen a lot of crews going along the reston parkway. and this is a live look right now. but you can see it's so cold that the salt has difficulty working. a lot of snow cover out here driving out here on the dulles toll road. the road was just in horrible shape. so about you do have to head out

this evening, virginia is urging drivers to wait until the sun comes up. i have to say it's cold and snowy and the roads are still treacherous in spots. >> amelia segal live in reston for us. thank you. it's now 5:17. harrison ford is waking up in the hospital after crashing a small plane on a california golf course. the experienced pilot was flying a vintaged world war ii era training plane yesterday when he reported that his engine lost power. he landed on a golf course fairway. take a look at the scene.d to help the 72-year-old before paramedics arrived. one of the golfers happened to be a spinal surgeon. he says the plane was leaking fuel and he wanted to get ford out of the plane safely. >> the we extracted him after unbelted him, carefully sx x. tracted him as best we could by 340eb8 lizing mobi his spine. >> he has a few broken bones and deep cut on his head.

he's expected to make a full recovery. 5:18. today we will get the final report on the deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school. connecticut's sandy hook advisory commission is releasing the report this afternoon. it will cover school safety mental health and gun violence proceedings. the panel will present its recommendations to governor dannel malloy. 20 children and 6 adults were shot and killed. take a look at this this video from inside delta flight 1086 it shows the calm mass exit after a plane skidded off the runway in new york. laguardia already has 84 cancellations today and this morning it is clear the city is still shaken by how dangerously close that plane came to ending up in flushing bay. the plane slid into an embankment halfway down the run way during yesterday morning's snow storm. other pilots had reported good braking condition, but laguardia is notorious for difficult

landings. this morning passengers are describing what they experienced. >> it started skiing and then it hit the side of the rail and went 400 yards and next thing we knew it came to a halt and we all kind of went forward. definitely an experience that we will be able to talk about. >> only five of the 130 people on board were taken to the hospital. . they all had minor injuries. there is still no word on what caused this freight train loaded with crude oil to derail and burst into flames in illinois. take a look at. five or six of the 103 cars carrying oil derailed near the mississippi river. that was they're illinois city yesterday afternoon. there is some concern that oil could end up in the river. everyone within one heil was asked to evacuate as a precaution. no one was hurt. following a developing story, are the map who attacked the u.s. ambassador to south korea in court today to fight charges, attempted murder charges. this is the video. you see the man here kim kim

jong being wheeled out. he looks like he's in terrible pain. not sure why. the suspect reportedly cut the ambassador on the face and wrist and he was streaming that the rival koreas should be unified. as for ambassador mark lippert, he does have some stitches to his face. sdwrs saying he also suffered some nerve damage to his left finger. that should heal in abou. it's 5:20. lawyers for both sides return to court today ahead of the jesse matthew murder trial. matthew will be tried for the murder of hannah graham. the trial has been delayed, a new date will be set on may 5. the wheelie reston east metro station back up and running this morning after reports of a fire under the

tracks. that call came in about 8:30 last night. flames were seen under an out of service rail car. we're told only the operator was on board at the time. news 4 has learned that a fire stem pipe broke, that caused water to flood the platform forcing to temporarily close. metro ran fairfax connector buses between the spring hill will station and wehle reston east. we're working to find out what caused this massive fire in prince george's county. it started in the garage of a home in bowie on rustic hill drive. woman inside escaped with her dogs before firefighters arrived. wofrp one of the fire chief's vehicle slid off the road in on it a tree. nobody hurt. it's become a tradition to break the cabin fever. dozens went out for a huge snowball fight. we took our gopro camera to the

the morning rush hour and lots f of bright sunshine. patchy ice this afternoon. strong early march sun may try to melt some snow and may cause some water to drift across roads and that will turn to ice. we'll stay below freezing during the afternoon. temperatures right now just near 10. it's dipped down to low single digits in frederick, panhandle of virginia. luray only 1 above zero right now. stanton, just at 1 above. that's not the windchill. windchills closer to washington are near zero as well. tomorrow finally getting above freeze. turn your clocks aheadtght night before you go to bed. lots of melting sunday. sunday afternoon around 50 degrees. monday partly sunny even a little milder, may make it into

the low 50s. p a lot of melting of this snow all through next week. much of the snow may be gone by mid week. in fact get something rain possible on tuesday. highs mid-50s. wednesday maybe near 60 degrees. and then a little chillier, but still pleasant on thursday partly cloudy with highs right around 50 degrees. a look at neighborhood highs around the region for this frozen friday coming up at 5:31. have a new problem outer loop of the beltway, at 66 the ramp blocked. hoping this is out of the way in the next couple minutes. but a crash is in the way. toll road east bound still at hunter mill road. this is still there right now. single car crash. taking a look in ashburn, one of our photographers driving through that area. you can see the roads a little

crunchy here. clarksburg at 270, this looking really good. i thought 270 and outer loop of the beltway at least in portions looking pretty good here this morning. prince george's county overall no major problems right now. i'll be back with a live picture of 66. 5:25. costco is cleaning up its act when it comes to the chicken it sells. they say it will stop use being chickens an cattle raised with antibiotics used to fight human infections. this announcement comes just days after mcdonald's said it would stop using shared antibiotics animals, as well. health experts say that feeding animals human antibiotics could create super bug there is could put human health at risk. and speaking of antibiotics, a new study says it has found little evidence of antibiotics in mill inning. the agency took samples of raw milk from 2,000 farms, they tested for 31 degrees. less than 1% showed illegal amounts of drug residue.

is lifted again at 9:30. tomorrow marks 50 years since bloody sunday. so march 7, 1965 hundreds of demonstrators attempted to march from selma, alabama to the state capitol building in montgomery too to demand the right to vote for black americans. this weekend, there will be dozens of events throughout the country to commemorate the march. president obama will be there and will speak at the bridge tomorrow. the song blurred lines might still be stuck in your head. it was a hit for the summer, but it will soon be out of court. lawyers representing the family of the late singer marvin gaye say robin thicke and pharrell lied about how they created that song. jury deliberations continue today. capitol bike share approved its first applies increase. the new am fee will go from $75 to $85. capitol bike share also removing

welcome back. it's it's 5:39. we're watching the roads for you. it looks like the road here has been plowed. but of course a lot of whatever little melting may have happened yesterday, it's turned to ice in a lot of places. so you you want to be careful if you're doing any driving this

morning. in winter is taking a toll on the budget for local governments. montgomery county is one of those local jurisdictions that has blown through its snow removal budget. removing snow from a storm yesterday costs about $80,000 per hour and overall storm cleanup will cost between $1 million and $2 million. montgomery county has already spent $20 million this winter twice what the county budgeted for. despite the overspending the county says it has enough salt and supplies to last through the rest of the winter. >> really when you think about it, the wet snow that fell yesterday either turned to slush and hardened or the snow itself has hardened. >> and i don't think we'll see any melting today sadly. >> let's check in with tom kierein. weather and traffic on the 1s. >> we're frozen solid. first hint of daylight showing up. sunrise today 6:34. bright sunny day.

welcome back. we are working for you and watching the roads right now. storm team 4 x 4 is driving in frederick county maryland. there is some clear pavement but a lot of tricky spots. tom kierein here now with your forecast. >> and we're dealing with subzero windchills this morning. winds aren't blowing that hard only running around 10 to 15 miles per hour. but it feels like near zero windchills. in leesburg 5 below zero windchill. and 6 below zero windchill in

hagerstown. and windchills are single digits to near zero in southern maryland as well. we have a windchill advisory in effect all these counties in blue until 10:00 this morning with they're or subzero windchills between now and then. it's 14 before the hour. amtrak will still limit some service today because of the weather. that includes acela. if you have a reservation, amtrak says it will contact you about changes. a tractor trailer hauling nearly 100 cows overturned near hagerstown. the driver was heading south when he hit another vehicle. the cows were trapped inside until a temporary pen could be set up for them. several cows were killed. tomorrow's all state community shred is canceled because of the show. we will share the new date when it is rescheduled. and we've had pets, kid

respect creates, creative hate ss. time back to basics. snowman snowman. the best gets his or her very own the pat collins stick. we'll announce the winner tonight on news 4. great pictures. well, we are working through your neighborhoods to show you the complains you'll find whenever you decide to leave the house. >> amelia segal joins us live in fairfax county. that's a lot of snow mounldded up next to you. >> reporter: there is so much snow. we've had anywhere from about 5 to 10 inches fall yesterday, some areas saw close to a foot. we've changed locations, we're still in reston but here along old dominion parkway. i have my ir thermometer, so i'll take a new reading. a little bit better this time. sidewalk temperature here is now at minus 6 degrees fahrenheit. and you can see the sidewalk conditions aren't great, there a little bit of snow and ice.

winds are blowing at about 5 miles per hour so that is adding to the bitter windchill this morning. and as we take a look at the road condition here it's like night and day when you compare it to the reston parkway this morning. reston parkway not in great shach. white knuckle driving there. the dulles toll road also very snowy, very slushy.pe. white knuckle driving there. the dulles t further down the road fairfax county parkway, larry is out here with me and he took a quick drive down the fairfax county parkway. it wasn't so bad, but definitely still snow on the parkway. you could see a little bit more ice. vdot is urging drivers this morning, if you can, to delay your trips until after the sun comes up and hopefully we'll start to warm up the service temperatures. i'm getting a reading here of minus 6. so the road crews have been out.

deactivate their accounts to automatically reactivate them within a month. you'd simply reactivate your account by logging on again. recent surveys find about a third of the users have taken a break at some point from the social media site. aaron, back to you. a new effort on protect children from abusive homes is now law in maryland. under the law if a child is removed from a home because of severe physical abuse the social worker is not required to try to reunite the family. under the old law, there needed to be a pattern of abuse. changes were made after a 3 month old was allegedly beaten to death by her father. due to a special zoning extension, chantilly, virginia will soon with a new daycare. a 10,000 square foot child care center will be permitted at the corner of edgewater street and donovan drive.
