delays map. all that red means all major school districts are closed for today. making today's snowy conditions worse, the bitter cold temperatures you're stepping outside to. >> temperatures may be in the teens right now but you can he soo the windchills make it feel much colder. especially if you live north and west of d.c.. tom kierein starts off with your weather headlines. >> north and west we had subzero windchills. in the wake of the snow yesterday, sky cleared out, but we still have winds only gusting to around 10 15 miles per hour will but enough to drop the windchills subzero throughout much of the morning. noon they will be improving, but still windchills in the teeps teens. the wind will diminish later today. what to wear dress warmly. warm coat boots because it will be rather slushy as we get into the afternoon.

may melt a little bit. definitely need hat and gloves. have the sunglasses too. the sun bouncing off the snow can create snow blindness. temperatures right now in the suburbs north and west of washington. in the single digits to just near 10 degrees. hovering near 10 in fairfax, much of northern virginia, much of prince george's county they're the bay, only near 10 degrees starting off early this morning. a look at the hour by hour temperatures coming up at 6:11. another issue, chopper 4 just over this one, bw parkway southbound at 202. and as the chopper sort of zooms in here, you can see one crash off to the right side. and look at this, another crash again off to the right side. so two different problems bw parkway southbound here at

landover road. right now 95 south at route 123 still looks shut down because of that crash. inner loop past georgia avenue only the left lane getting by. this is a testament everybody to how nasty the roads are this morning. it is not pretty. 270 even nasty from about 370 down through rockville. wider look at things fairly slow everywhere. people taking it slow. and again, several crashes we're dealing with. travel times coming up in ten minutes. it is now 6:02 and we're keeping you updated on the roads. the storm team 4 x 4 is out show us the roads. this is along 70 south in maryland. but you may have a tough time getting to the highway because of all the side street. most of them are still covered.

adam tuss is live on rockville park now and tucker map line showing us what it looks like outside your door. >> reporter: good morning, it is frozen out here. and i think a lot of people are a little over confident. let me show you exactly what we're dealing with here. it looks like water, but it's not. absolutely frozen solid black ice. take a look at rockville pike. we have slush covering the roadway. all the water that father,ell, everything that melted has refrozen. crews are doing what they can, but you cannot plow ice. so what is happening right now they are trying to gets a much slush off the roadway as possible. they're putting down the salt and chemical but it will be a slow roll all throughout the area. we're not just talking about wisconsin avenue rockville pike places like that. we're talk about some of the highways that have issues as well.

you will also have to have more time to dig your car out this morning. back to you. >> we've been saying all morning the leftover snow that is now ice is making for dangerous driving. so make sure you take your time this morning. vdot is still salting and sanding the roads. nearly 4,000 plows are still on the roads in virginia work to go clear the roads. >> metrobus up and running this morning, but with limited service. as part of the moderate snow plans, some routes suspended others will see deto yourselfurdetours. and we're already seeing delays. bus service was halted last night because of the snow. however, metrorail passengers whether see normal weekday service. important information for you on the mark and vre. mark train pen line will operate on an s schedule. no service on camden or brunswick. vre also running s schedule. things are starting to get back to normal at local

could make for a treacherous morning commute. >> and tom kierein is here now with the impact the windchills whether have on your plans today. >> we have subzero windchills. temperature temperatures are so cold we'll have the sub zero windchills. we're getting the earlier sunrises now this time of year. hour by hour staying subfreezing all day long. up to near 20 mid-morning, near 30 by midafternoon. back down to the 20s with lots of sunshine through the day today. we will have frigid temperatures with us through the afternoon. then a weekend warming trend coming up at 6:21. harrison ford walking up in the hospital after he crashed a small plane on a golf course in california. he is an experienced pilot.

he was flying a training a plane when he reported his engine lost power. he landed on the golf course. the 72-year-old has a few broken bones and a deep cut on his head but expected to make a full recovery. look for a live report from los angeles in our next half hour. still no word on what caused this freight train loaded with crude oil to derail and burst into flames. five or six of the cars derailed near mississippi river near illinois city. there is some concern that oil could he said up in the river. everyone within a mile was evacuated as a precaution. no one was hurt. new headache for med troh after another incident on the rails. the problem that forced one station to close for a while. >> cold weather turning the snow on the roads to ice. amelia segal is live in the elements helping you prepare. bw parkway southbound at landover road you can see how the roads are still slick in a lot of areas. we have one crash there and as chopper 4 pulls back another crash off to the right side of the roadway. so just a mess here this morning. 95 south at 123, totally shut down being pushed off here on to route 1 because of a tractor trailer crash over in that area. also inner loop past georgia avenue, a dump truck hitting a portion of the overpass. only the left lane getting by. a mess will.there. orange line single tracking and yellow line delays to mt. vernon. we're still feeling the effects of that win fridaytry weather. conditions will be even more dangerous outside. >> and take a look at these windchills we're dealing with right now. negative 1 in leesburg just 2 in washington. if you're lucky, it is going to

feel like the single digits but some of you dealing with much colder temperatures. tom kierein here now with what the day will look like. i'm not sure i want to know. >> morning after with all the snow on the ground and with a clear sky, temperatures have plummeted overnight. we have record cold now dulles down to 11 degrees. i don't think we'll break the record right in washington. p they're by suburbs montgomery county single digits now. and we'll stay cold with these temperatures here for the next couple of hours hovering near 10 degrees. and then getting up near 30 by later this afternoon. now amelia segal is out live looking at the sidewalks and the conditions and how cold it is. where are you now amelia?

>> reporter: well, still here in reston. an as you would expect from all the snow we've had, the frigid temperatures very snow i, very cold. and still treacherous in spots here this morning. i have my ir thermometer taking the impressive bitterly cold temperature all morning around the reston area. right now will sidewalk is coming in at minus 20 degrees fahrenheit. so when surfaces are this cold, salt does not work. so if you have to walk to work make sure you have on a good pair of boots and do the penguin walk so you're not slipping on any ice. where we're facing is more toward downtown reston. we are on new dominion parkway. you can see the sun coming up with clear skies. because of the clear skies, how dry it is outside, this is why temperatures are so cold. i have to say though the winds here are not an issue and they really haven't been all morning. so that is terrific news. even when the wind blows a little bit, it makes it feel

graham graham. on wednesday, graham's parents saw matthew in person for the first time when he appeared this court. the trial has been delayed. new trial day will be set may 5. today we will receive the final report on the deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school. connecticut sandy hook advisory commission is releasing it will cover school safety mental health and gun violence protection. the panel will present its recommendations to connecticut's governor. in 2012 20 children and 6 adults were shot and killed inside sandy hook elementary school. d.c. police are looking for two men who robbed d.c.'s only head shop at gunpoint. this was at the island dyes on h street. it was yesterday afternoon. that shop sells mostly smoking piping. police say the suspects got away with cash. nobody was hurt. the robbery was caught by the store's surveillance cameras. we're working to get that video for you. the wehle reston east metro station will be back up and running this morning after reports of a fire under the tracks. that call came in about 8:30

last night. flames were seen under an out of service rail car. we're told only the operator was on board at that point. a fire stand pipe, a stand pipe, broke while firefighters were putting out the flames there. this caused the water to flood the platform, that means it had to be temporarily closed. metro ran fairfax connector buses between spring hill station and wehle reston east. also today howard university will inaugurate its 17th president, dr. frederick will lay out his vision in his remarks today. the ceremony begins at the 10:00 and it coincides with the school's annual charter day commemoration. howard's charter was approved by president andrew johnson in 1867. and today d.c. will begin taking steps to pay tribute to the district he's mayor for life. mayor bowser will announce a commission whose job will be to honor the late marian barry. today would have been barry's 79th birthday. he passed away last year.

the announcement the is this morning outside his old home in anacostia. today is another brutal day even though the snow is over dealing with? really frigid temperatures. >> cover your face up stay wrapped up out there. it will be tough. tom kierein is in the storm center with a look at the forecast. amelia showed us how we need to penguin walk on the sidewalks. watch your footing this morning. and use a soft foot on the accelerator and the brake as you're driving this morning. this is what wisconsin avenue looked like about 2:00 this morning. i took this picture and it has been plowed but still has a coating of snow on it. so you have to break very slowly and only accelerate very slowly as most roads are covered like this that have not really been treat aed with a lot of chemicals. we'll stay below freezing with p temperatures in the teens here through the morning hours. and we'll have bright sunshine. and then that sun may actually be strong enough to melt some of the ice, some of the slush that we've had overnight that troez.froze.

and then refreeze. it will get near 30 briefly by midafternoon. right now temperatures hovering near 10 in the suburbs, mid teens in washington and near the chesapeake bay. mountains, some locations near zero. frederick only one above zero. 6 and it feels more leicht theike the middle of winter. finally getting above freezing late saturafternoon, reaching low 40s. and turn your clock ahead one hour saturday night before you go bed. so sunday staying above freezing saltturday night into sunday. we'll have a lot of melting. won't have to worry about refreezing. back to work and school, should get all the schools open on monday and temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. mid week into wednesday. chance of some rain moving in on tuesday. but drying out toward the end of

west montgomery avenue a little slow. back in a couple minutes with more on this crash on 95 in virginia. this was a close call. this morning we're learning more about the scary moments after delta flight 1086 skidded off the run way at laguardia airport. >> stephanie gosk joining live from college point new york. >> reporter: good morning. from this vantage point you can get a look at laguardia airport. you get a sense of how much water surrounds laguardia. it is notorious among pilots as being a difficult place to land. runways are short, you have all that water. and in bad weather, it only gets

bottom of your screen. and we're keeping you updated on the roads. the storm team 4 x 4 is out this morning. crews did a pretty good job treating and clearing the highways but your parking lot could be just as slick as some of the side streets. adam tuss is live in rockville for us. adam, what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning. it is a frozen landscape out here this morning. let give you an idea just how much snow actually fell. take a look at this snow bank that we are on right now. and this is all the snow being pushed up. because there was so much water with this storm, all of it has frozen again. so take a look at the parking lots. they are sheets of ice. this tractor trailer over here this poor guy has been spinning his wheels. he's not even on a big incline right there, but he is stuck. and it will take quite the super wrecker to come and get him out of there. he can't even move. we'll go talk to him in a

second see what happened over there. but that's the kind of situation that you will be dealing with as you head out, not just on the roads. a lot of the roads are slick, but it's these parking lots sidewalks, anything that was wet has frozen again. and there is plenty of black ice out here. give yourself plenty of extra time to clear your car and get where y be safe. back to you. >> adam tuss be careful getting down. you're making me nervous up there. >> just slide down. it's solid, right? all right. if you're trying to catch an being a tram train today you will still see some service changes because of the snow. trains between d.c. and new york will be impacted the most. that includes acela trains. amtrak says it will contact you if you're affected by the schedule changes. but it's also important to check ahead if you have a reservation. this winter making a incident in the budgets of local governments. montgomery county has blown through its snow removal budget. removing snow from a storm like yesterday costs about $80,000 an

hour. county officials tell news 4 overall storm clean skrup will cost between $1 million and $2 they have already spent $20 million, twice what the county budgeted. but they say they have enough salt and supplies to last through the rest of the winter. area governments are opening late today and you'll need the extra time. we're tracking accidents all over the d.c. area. the conditions you'll see on the roads and the snowy conditions impact people who commute to work. scheduled changes you need to know before you head out the door. plus new developments in that plane crash involving actor harrison ford. the new audio of his calls for help.

we'll stay below freezing all day and all night tonight. hour by hour still just in the mid teens by 8:00 a.m.. bright and sunny by noontime. diminishing wind by then. then during the afternoon, may briefly get near 30 around 3:00 4:00. and then back down to the upper 20s by 5:00 p.m.. overnight tonight not as cold, but still below freezing. mid defense by-20s by 8:00 p.m.. by dawn saturday, it will be down to the upper teens to near 20. warmer weather moves in after that and into next week. a look at that coming up. a push to raise the speed limit on maryland highways has cleared another hurdle. house of delegates voted to approve the measure. it would raise it from 65 to 70. the senate approved a similar bill last month.

you heard vdot say that the road conditions are so cold chemicals, salt is not effective when it is this chilly out. the sun is coming up. we're looking at clear skies. but it is still going to take a while to get the roads into good shape. you can see here on more residential road completely snow covered at this point. heading out this morning, we have a lot of slick spots to get through. >> amelia segal live in reston for us. thank you. we're already seeing reported delays for metrobuses this morning. buses are running on a moderate snow plan, that means some routes are suspended and others will see detours. metrorail passengers will have better luck today. trains are expected to run on a regular weekday schedule. meanwhile marc and vre riders will face service reductions. marc train penn line operating on the "s" schedule. no service along the camden and brunswick lines. vre also running its "s" schedule as well.

back to the basics. snowman. best snowman maker gets his or her own pat collins stick. if we're lucky, there is the last snow stick challenge of the year. we'll announce the winner tonight. >> we had enough snow to build a lot of snow men yesterday. >> and seeing adam tuss on that mountain of snow is amazing. we had about 5 6 inches in the metro area. these are the final tallies of the snow totals that we had from yesterday's storm. we had about 7, 8, 9 inches north and west. there were a few spots as we look at the snow totals off to our north and west where up to a foot of snow fell in the northern shenandoah valley. parts of the panhandle of west virginia hagers p town had about 10 inches before and then farther to the south and the east it came in later in the day. southern maryland many locations there at 6 inches of snow. eastern shore did, too. and west of there from frederickburg up toward warrington and culpeper, 6 to 7 inches of snow, as well p.
