off the top at 11:00, new details of the woman involved a crash that killed a prince georges county police officer and learning more about what happened just before that wreck. darcy spencer joins us live with the latest. >> this is basically where it happened. the car was right in between the opening in the fence. >> reporter: robert can see from his deck where prince georges county police officer crashed his cruiser into the backyard fence. >> it was definitely a tough situation. >> reporter: news 4 learned that a woman was in the car with officer rabane and suffered minor injuries. the woman was taken to the hospital and su datededated because she was in shock. >> i heard a female screaming for help. i ran to the back of the house to see what was going on. that's when i noticed that the car had crashed into the back of

the -- the backyard. >> reporter: police tells news 4 the officer was initially off duty but turning on the lights and siren to pull a driver over about 3:30 in the morning, he was immediately on duty. he crashed his cruiser after losing control on greenbelt road and slamming into the fence. police say slick roads could have been a factor. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> we haven't had an opportunity to pull the in-car camera information yet. we are interviewing people as we speak to find out if that in fact's what was happening. >> and again, darcy broke the news about the passenger being inside the officer's cruiser on twitter. for all the new updates on this story, check online and our nbc 4 app. investigators say a teenager ran over a man in montgomery village and killed him. officers say helen ramolt hit a man around 1:30 in the morning.

he died at the hospital. detectives find the woman near the crash with evidence she may have been under the influence of alcohol. she is 18 years old and took her into custody. no charges have been filed. new at 11:00, three children are dead tonight in virginia after a fire ripped through their home while they were sleeping. it happened in portsmouth. investigators pulled out a 3-year-old boy and 9-month-old twins. but it was too late. the twins' father tried to save them too, but the flames were too intense. the mothers are devastated. >> i just saw the smoke. i smelled smoke and getting closer to the room i just saw all that smoke, black smoke. >> you speed through life so fast that you just lose the precious times that you have with your babies. and just slow down. >> to reminder to everyone out there. investigators say there was an

extension cord plugged into a space heater near some clothes. it overheated and ignited. people heard a loud bang outside the white house and then saw smoke and flames out of a ren dorr cart. the family was about to fly out and the secret service locked down the white house. agents checked out the area but there was no threat to the first family. the owners pent the afternoon trying to salvage what's left of the cart. in bethesda people had to evacuate a strip mall today after a grease fire broke out at a restaurant. no one was hurt but the fire did damage the chicken on the run. even though the fire spread to the roof of other businesses -- i say it spread to the roof. no other businesses were damaged. howard county police looking for two men that robbed a 7-eleven last night on washington boulevard. investigators say at least one of the robbers had a gun and the other assaulted the clerk on

allegiance with isis just after suspected bombers set off a series of suicide attacks in nigeria. the terrorists killed more than 50 people and injured well over 100 others. police in madison, wisconsin, calling for calm and restraint after a police officer shot and killed a black teenager. protests have been growing all day after people learned that tony robinson was unarmed. detectives say the officer was responding to a call and gt into a struggle with robinson in an apartment. the officer says he shot the 19-year-old in self defense. the officer was involve in another deadly shooting eight years ago and cleared in that case. next is d.c. streetcar project going completely off the rails? some official comments have people questioning the future. plus local students with a special screening of history as marchers remember a milestone hundreds of miles away. >> our country will never, ever be the don't wait for awesome... totino's

the district has poured nearly $200 million into its streetcars and now the entire project may be scrapped. this story is generating criticism on the facebook page and it's been shared more than 250 times. in fact one person says they may end up calling it a streetcar named disaster. well the associated press is reporting that the acting director of d-dot told the city council they may never open. the director says an outside review will determine if they have quote, fatal flaws. well this week marks 150 years since lincoln's second inauguration. today people reenacted the
