scattered light showers here in this area in green. sprinkles in prince george's county southern montgomery, the district. much of fairfax county alexandria and arlington. farther south along 95 and west out 66 getting the showers. southern maryland parts of charles county st. mary's, calvert getting a little bit of that light rain. these counties north of the metro area is where the dense fog is still lingering. that includes loudoun county montgomery howard frederick, washington panhandle of west virginia in these counties we have patchy fog. visibilities there have been reduced to about a quarter of a mile. i took this picture about 2:00 this morning. there was thick fog there. so when you encounter it slow down and use low beams. a look change from the morning to the afternoon coming up at 6:11. it's now 6:01. canal road in northwest washington is closed and it's

not clear when it will open up again. a tree fell across the road there. richard jordan joins us live from where this is going on. richard, what is going on out there right now? >> reporter: looks like this will be an issue all morning long. we do have d.c. police directing traffic, so this as traffic coming from the chain bridge side you can see being directed off toward reservoir. let's get you up close to the trouble spot here where that tree came down. very large tree, roots right out of the ground. the tree fell across both lanes of traffic. there was a driver that was attempting to drive down canal and crashed right into that tree. took a lot of front end damage to the vehicle. we haven't h yet how the driver is doing. d.c. police saying it is possible that the fog may have caused some issues with visibility. so that is something they're looking at right now. the tree is still down in the

middle of the road. work crews need to come out and clear that away. let's talk about the alternates now. melissa has more on that. >> as far as the alternates, if you're coming inbound on canal, you'll be pushed on to reservoir. if you're coming outbound or headed outbound, i should say, traffic there pushed on to foxhall. if you can avoid canal, you might want to. gw parkway south from turkey run to memorial bridge, crews filling potholes a rolling road crew there. largo at black swan drive, have downed wires and tree there. the road completely blocked. police directing you around that. wide look at things overall looking pretty good getting a little slow here you can see inpound bw parkway just inside the beltway. other than that looking pretty good on the beltway. and 95 in virginia here at mine road rolling along quite nicely as well. i'm back at 6:11 with travel

times. . breaking news out of the florida panhandle. all are still missing, that is the word we're getting from military officials this hour after an arm helicopter crashes in the florida panhandle during a night training exercise. what we know still missing. seven marines four soldiers. new information that we just got in the last 15 minutes tells us that a ch-60 chopper, that is what kind of helicopter crashed on this mission in the remote part of the beach near pensacola will an area owned by the military used for these kind of test missions. a.p. also reporting that the military sometimes drops trainees into the ocean they use boats and helicopters to help the trainees get back to shore. some debris from the chopper also found within the last couple hours. the names of those being withheld will until they can forgive family. today the trial begins for a prince george's county teacher

accused of sex abuse. andre brown was teacher and coach at high point high school in beltsville. prosecutors say he abused a 17-year-old student after asking theory go with him into a locker room during a football game in 2013. he was arrested last may after she reported it to police. montgomery county family is looking for your help to find a missing man. this 67-year-old was last seen monday night at his home in gaithersburg. his family is worried because he has dementia. if you see him, call police right away. no word this mornin identity of a have a are a tech tupt missing after falling off of a cruise ship. or affiliate in roanoke says the 21-year-old was reported missing sunday from the carnival ship glory. the us coast guard is still searching. staffing shortage at the d.c. police department right now and they're calling it a crisis.

transcripts. joe morrissey is no longer spending time in jail. completed his three month sentence yesterday. morrissey served time in connection to a relationship he had with a 17-year-old girl. he resigned over that case, but was voted back into office in a special election for the seat that he gave up. hazmat crews are still trying to find the source of an odor that caused the evacuation of mount st. mary's university in several floors of the science building were evacuated yesterday afternoon when students and staff noticed a strong solvent smell. there were no injuries. may be able to help police if you recognize this man. it shows the man who broke into a tailor showroom. he left with arms full of clothing. there is a $1,000 reward for

information in the burglary. new developments accused of threatening to shoot president obama in the name of isis. federal prosecutors filed a motion to restrict phone access for christopher cornell. he's been locked up in ohio since january. last week he made a surprise phone call from jail to a tv station. he was recorded saying that if he had made to washington, he would have tried to the shoot the president. fbi initially arrested cornell for an alleged plot to shoot up the u.s. capitol. your double chin could be a thing of the past. this is video showing the before and after results. the new fda recommended injectable drug says it can melt away the fat on your chin. seems too good to be true. tests on the drug have taken several years and now clinical trials have shown it is safe and makes people happier with their chins. if approved the drug could be offered as an alternative to surgery. interesting. it seems that you may not be getting the message that sugary

pretty typical for this time of day. northbound 95 there in dale city unfortunately it just gets slow this time of day. 16 miles an hour right now. 66 at 29 inbound here a little bit of volume. otherwise looking pretty good. gw parkway southbound slow from turkey run to the memorial bridge because crews are filling potholes. back in ten minutes. take a look at this. a man was pumping some gas when all of a sudden the station's canopy just collapsed right on top of his car. he got away narrowly. emergency crews were able to free the car from the debris and the man got back behind will the wheel and drove off. the new bus rules start in less than two weeks on i-66 in virginia and they could make your commute a lot faster. vdot announced buses will be able to start driving on the shoulder. it's a pilot program and only applies for certain sections of the road. we've put a map on the nbc washington facebook page.

it is building up though. we see a lot of brake lights. this is traffic heading toward georgetown. outbound lane is still blocked because of the downed tree. let's give you a close up look at the damage that was caused. the tree is completely toppled over. this is just past foxhall. a car crashpassing through crashed right into the tree. it has been a foggy morning. not sure the visibility at that time. but that crash happened before police closed the road. it was closed willin both directions for most of the morning, but now the one inbound lane open. outbound traffic still blocked at foxhall. so if you're coming from the key bridge toward the chain bridge, should you not use canal road you should take either mcarthur or reservoir to get around that.

aaron. it is now 6:47. handwritten note on the inside walls of a boat is at the center of testimony in the boston marathon bombing trial. pete williams is live in this boston this morning. pete good morning. the judge ended court early yesterday so he could take a closer look at the boat. what happens next? >> reporter: well, the judge will have to decide whether the jury will see the entire boat. there has been some back and forth among the lawyers about what is appropriate. let's back up a bit, though. we've known dzhokhar tsarnaev wrote in the boat and in court documents and statements by the prosecution over the last several months leading up to the trial, bits and sections of that have come out. but we've never seen the entire thing. and we've never seen pictures of the writing itself. so the message has been pretty well-known in advance. it was a diatribe against the u.s. military operations in iraq and afghanistan. what was interesting is he said that he's jealous of his brother forget to go paradise before
