11:46 am
praise our children or it may have unintended consequences. dr. joshua weiner is here to explain. good morning. >> good morning. >> tell us about the study. what does it say? lavishing praise on our kids can really hurt them? >> well depends. depends on the way the praise is given and what you're saying. let me start by saying that a kid or person's view of themselves is largely shaped by how they think other people think of them. and, really what's the most important relationship is the view of your parents. so you really care about that. now what the study suggests is that if parents are lavishing their kids with too much praise in the form of actually saying to their kids you're special. you deserve special treatment. you're better than other people. and sort of projecting that their child is god's gift to mankind. if you are saying those sorts of things or behaving in that way with your child, you're putting them at risk of internalizing that and having an inflated sense of self. >> i can see what you're saying but a lot of parents feel they o reinforce a child's
11:47 am
self-esteem by telling them especially in this age of bullying that you are special, and don't listen to anybody who says bad things to you. what about that? >> that's fine, but there's a difference. there's a difference between saying you're special and i love you versus saying you're subpoena. you're better than -- >> i see. >> yeah. >> those are not the messages to send to your child. what you want to do when trying to develop self-esteem in a kid show them you appreciate them. and that you love them. and the way do you that is not by just saying i appreciate you and love you. but in all the hundreds of thousands of interactions you have over the child's life where you are showing that. when you have a child who is actually getting feedback from you and you're busy looking at your blackberry or your text you're sending the message even though your words say i love you, your words are saying i'm not interested in you. i'm interested in my text. >> looking at the things on the screen. praise effort. wah tount say to the child
11:48 am
you're doing a good job, trying hard but not the best necessarily? >> exactly. here are specific rules. so praising effort. effort is something that kids can control. you can't necessarily control how great of an athlete you are or necessarily how smart you, but you can't control effort. praise the effort. also you want to be specific in the praise that you give. so you don't want to just say, way to go. you're so good. you want to say, i really like wait you took the time to make that color on that picture. or something to that effect. be specific so the kid knows exactly what you're talking about. so that they can rep pla dhatlicate that behavior and be honest sincere. don't just say you're wonderful, this that and the other thing when kids really know maybe i'm not the best at this because they need to trust what you say. >> does age have anything to do with it? praising a 4-year-old the same as praising a 10-year-old? do it always the same way? >> no. really when talking about developing some of these narcissism traits or personality traits you're nor susceptible
11:49 am
at that at the 7 10 11-year-old range than when you're much younger. kids much younger, you can be more lavish with praise at that age because they can't incertainlyize it that much at that particular age. >> so what are the signs that your child has developed this kind of narcissim? what do you look for? >> atting like they really should be treated differently than the rest of the people around them and that they get really upset if they don't get that special treatment. that is an indication that y need to rein things in a little bit. the sprob, some of these cases, the parents actually truly believe their kids are special, and they're sending that message. if you're seeing those things you have to look at the parent at the messages that you're delivering to your child and you need to adjust them. >> good idea. and we're hearing so much about this lately th i think parents are going to at least be tuned in to watch for those behaviors. thank you so much for talking about it. we have a news 4 consumer alert we'll show you where to
