developing this morning, a call to police reroutes officers to a dead body. the mystery police are trying to solve surrounding this murder. >> switching gear, we're waking up to a chilly thursday morning, but it won't last long. >> yeah drying out this morning nicely as you can see, the temperatures are comfortable. we're in the low to mid-40s around the region right now. and as we take a look at radar, it's scanning our sky and not picking up any rain around the region. radar showing just a clear sky now and things are drying out, although a lot of that show that still lingers north aptnd west of us is putting water on the roads. farther south anar there will be a chill in the air

back at 5:11, live picture of 66. we're following a developing story out of prince george's county. officers there responded to shots fired on edmondson road last night. the victim was found a few blocks away at a gas station. megan mcgrath is live with more. >> reporter: you can see the crime scene tape which has been taken down and put into that trash can there, the only real evidence here of the crime scene that was here and very active late last night. investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened. they got two calls if to police right around 11:00. one was for the report of a shooting in the 5100 block of edmondson road. the second call came in for trouble here at the red top gas station. now, when police got here to the gas station that's when they found a man suffering from very

serious wounds although they say there is no evidence that he was shot. that man was taken to the hospital where he died as well as of those injuries a authority time later. there is no word on motive or any suspect, but one man is dead and the investigation is ongoing. megan mcgrath, news 4. breaking news out of missouri searching for a shooter there after two cops were shot during a protest outside the ferguson police department. we want to take you to the scene there. this video coming into the newsroom just a short while ago. just hours ago this happened. officers took cover with their long guns the st. louis county police chief is saying there is no description of the suspect or a gun. in other words these police

officers were standing there and they were shot. just because they were police officers. >> one of the officers was hit in the face, another shot in the shoulder. they were conscious when they were taken to the hospital. the shooting came just hours after tom jackson police chief resigned. jackson fought off previous calls for his resignation, but he decided it would be best to leave after a scathing justice department report prompted by michael brown's shooting death found deep racial bias in the police force. nbc has confirmed the names of two secret service agents under investigation for crashing a government car on white house grounds last week. mark connolly is second in command on the presidential security detail. george ogilvy is a supervisor in the washington field officer. the two agents drove a vehicle into barricades after a night of

drinking. tracy spots wille tracie potts will join us in ten minutes. a prince george's county police officer will be laid to rest today p. brennan rabain's funeral service starts in a few hours. you're look at video from his wake yesterday. fellow officers will be at the funeral services along with rabain's feel and friends. rabain died in a car crash while on duty. he was 26 years old. it is official former maryland lieutenant governor anthony brown will run for congress. brown posted an announcement on his website. he is running for donna edwards' house seat. he hadedwards will run for senate. brown's announcement comes one day after glenn ivey said he will run for that seat as well. today vdot is expected to make a big announcement about the future of i-66. the department will propose toll lanes on the highway. you see them between the beltway and the d.c. line. vdot is also considering lanes outside the beltway as well as a project that would widen the

welcome back. take a look at this incredible video. this is a tanker that blew up and you can see this is from an aerial view. no one was seriously hurt when this happened on a major highway in michigan. p that tanker is completely engulfed in flames. it created thick black cloud of smoke that just flew into the sky. according to one report, this also caused a lot of damage to the road. so a lot of traffic might be effected for the next several days. one person was killed two others injured in an explosion at a plant in central alabama.

you can see a few fireball, massive plups of black smoke. we know at least one person with bad burns was blown to a nearby hospital. at least six people were inside the brent industries plant when e explosion p happened. in just 18 hour over 8 feet fell in a village in italy three hours away from rome last thursday. the small town has about 1,000 residents. look at that people were forced to build snow tunnels to travel around. makes for beautiful pictures, but i'm sure the residents weren't too pleased. >> i know how they feel. it's beanen a long hard winter. but we're in for a much nicer day around here compared to the whole winter always. >> this change in the temperature, this turnaround, i'm loving it. >> here we'll have beautiful

live desk. a new report from a d.c. think tank group says it's just about impossible to find a place to live. the number of apartments renting for less than $800 a month fell about 42% from 2002 to 2013. and it's not any easier to find a rental between $800 and $1,000 a month in the capital city. and this is a big blow to the city's most vulnerable. will study warns there could be serious consequences from unstable and unhealthy housing that puts a lot of stress on families. that is the latest from the live desk p. back to you. molette green, thank you. this morning family and friends are remembering 11 service members who were aboard a black hawk helicopter when it went down. community members held a candlelight vigil last night in florida. the chopper crashed in the gulf of mexico tuesday night. military officials are still calling it a search and rescue mission. but all 11 service members are

presumed dead. four army aviators along with seven marines were aboard the black hawk helicopter they were conducting a training exercise. crews will be out searching again today. wreckage from the blackhawk started washing ashore yesterday. fog was heavy during the mission but officials aren't saying whether weather was the cause of that crash. prince william county police need your help finding the guys who ripped off a car crash victim. take a look. this is the second suspect wanted for stealing a woman's wallet from the crash scene. a woman was hurt on saturday in a crash on dumfries road in woodbridge. a man took a black bag containing her wallet. while she was in the hospital, someone repeatedly used her credit cards. more details this morning on the virginia tech student missing after falling off of a cruise ship. a representative from carnival cruise lines says surveillance cameras show 21-year-old cameron smoke climbing over a balcony

railing before he fell over mere the bahamas. smoke was a senior from glen allen. his family says he h. the u.s. coast guard has called off the search. the father of a 22 month old boy rescued from an attempted abduction is speaking out this morning. yesterday police arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with this crime in washington state last weekend. police say the bob grabbed the toddler from a stroller and ran off. the boy's siblings chased the suspect who eventually dropped the boy and took off. >> if it is him, that he's off the streets and that other families and we're safe. you know we won't have to worry about this ever again. >> all three children are safe and with their parents now. theyed had been under the care of a baby-sitter at the time of that abduction. a four month old boy is in critical condition today in

spotsylvania county his parents leopard parker and janine heerick charged with several counts of child neglect and cruelty. they were arrested on monday. the infant was taken to the hospital last week suffering what authorities describe as suspicious life threatening injuries. 5:19. if you use route 50, your commute could be affected. the ramps from garden city drive to west and eastbound sides of 50 are closed. the maryland state highway administration says a broken pipe could mean months of work. if you use the new carol top parking lot, you'll need to follow detour signs. you could seea-pace powdered packets of powdered alcohol. but you won't see them in virginia. lawmakers there banned it. you can order a vegan sandwich at most subways in our area. subway is good banding its vegan

>> yes, i was hugging the temperatures yesterday afternoon. and overnight, it's gotten rather chilly. this morni we're down into the low 40s. but good weather for the commute. just a little watery watches on the road from melting snow in the rural areas. watch out for that. otherwise dry pavement for the morning commute with bright sunshine. you'll need your sunglasses. we'll be in the upper 40s. and then the afternoon, drying roads with lots of sunshine and temperatures in the per 50s. a wonderful spring day coming today. and dress accordingly, just need a light jacket today. and you will need your sunglasses as we'll have that bright sun with us all throughout the day. and then overnight tonight, we'll be mostly clear and temperatures that are right now in the 40s, it will be climbing into the 50s this afternoon. but we're in the low to mid-40s from the bay to the shenandoah valley. mountains, most locations around 30 degrees.

frederick as you're getting on to 270 from 80. the ramp there is where the crash is. so police headed out there. so we'll keep you updated. also construction wisconsin avenue southbound at woodmont, two right lanes blocked. still sticking around. beltway at connecticut, looking quite good. same thing when you take a big look at things we're nice and green. a lot of movement here this morning. so not a lot of construction, but some just kind of hanging around later than it normally does. 66 looking good, same thing 95. back at 5:31 with more on that crash as you're getting on to 270 in frederick. it's now 5:24. the state department's internal watch dog now says many department employees have been too lax when preserving e-mails. a new report says in 2011 department staff wrote more than 1 billion, but only about 61,000 were marked for public record.

the report says some employees don't know the rules, others fear having their e-mails recorded and searched. it could mean a substantial amount of information is lost. a new poll says a lot of you just don't believe in the government right now. according to the survey, only 23% have a great deal of confidence in the supreme court. just 11% have a great deal of confidence in the executive branch. the president and the bhous. and poll says right now only 5% of americans have that confidence in congress. should a so-called smart barbie doll be banned? the campaign for a commercial free childhood says yes. the talking doll has speech recognition technology that allows to respond to questions fp the campaign says this could mean it could listen in on the kids playing with the doll. toy maker mattel denies that claim and says its technology includes safe guards to make sure any data stored is secure. the doll goes on sale this fall.

looking at the stories making headlines at 5:29. police are investigating a murder in the river day area. officers responded to shots fired just after 11:00 p.m.. the victim was found a few blocks away with some sort of trauma to the body. two police officers shot outside a protest at the ferguson police department. st. louis county police chief says both officers were conscious when they were taken to the hospital. but describes injuries as very serious. fellow officers friends and family will bury a police officer brennan rabain. his funeral is set for later this morning. rabain died in a car crash while on duty while trying to pull over a speeding car. we'll have much more on those stories throughout the morning, but first good morning to you.

avenue northbound at do youer house road, a lane blocked there. and clarksburg road at bethesda church road, a crash there, as well. some lanes blocked, too. so these just popping up. also again 80 ramp to southbound 270, that crash on the ramp. a lot of stuff happeni couple minutes. 66 at 50, moving along nicely. 95 north through dale city because it's 5:30 and that's what we do at 5:30. i'm back in ten minutes. a developing story this morning. the secret service is responding after two senior agents are accused of crashing a car near the white house following a night of drinking. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with the questions being raised. >> reporter: the top democrat and republican on the committee here a oversees the secret service say this is embarrassing and it is potentially dangerous.

they want to know if the secret service is really doing enough to try to turn things around. new this morning, we have itd filed the two agents as george ogilvy and mark connolly. connolly is reported as the second in charge of president obama's security detail. here is the story first reported in the "washington post". apparently last week the two were drinking retirement party for another agent when they used a government car with flashing lights to get back on to the white house grounds. they were investigating a suspicious package there. they hit a barricade and the officers on the scene according to the post wanted to test their sobriety and arrest them but a supervisor reportedly said no, send them home. this is exactly the type of problem joe clancy was brought into fix because if that were a civilian it would have been handled very definitely. you remember we had a similar case with a woman who hit a barricade and eventually shot.

now the inspector general will be investigating. right now the secret service says that's all they have to say until that investigation is over. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. thank you. today police are trying to figure out how human remains ended up in southeast washington. park police found the remain near an off-ramp on 295 yesterday afternoon. at this point d.c. police don't know the age or gender of the person. metro leaders are asking for a big loan today to pay off an old one. the r0r9eport says metro has to pay back hornmore than $500 million in debts later this year. officials are asking the board of directors for permission now to borrow another $220 million to help pay off those debts. metz the metro doesn't have its typical federal funding right now. the government is limiting how much it gives after an audit

found several cases of mismanaged money. court records show that veteran firefighter chuck rye apan started yelling at staff at a restaurant after he tried to leave without paying his bill. when officers arrived, they say that ryan got physical and kicked an officer. the other firefighter richard kirkpatrick was pulled over by police on tuesday. they say he ran a stop sign and almost hit two pedestrians. he's accused of headbutting an officer while handcuffed. the man accused of a string of random shootings is now linked to nine different cases. investigators being a kuk honk acc shooting at sever locati investigators found several bullet holes at maryland live casino 37 young says he heard voices telling him to shoot. no one was hurt in those shootings. a university in virginia says one of its fraternities tasered a student while hazing that person.

the guyphi kappa psi fraternity is now suspended. it won't be allowed to operate on campus for the next three years. the person who was tased was pledging for the fraternity. he was not seriously hurt. about 20 demonstrators protested outside of a dallas home of a former university of oklahoma student. parker ric one of the frat members seen chanting racist slushes in a individual slurs. he's apologized for participating. his family did not appear to be at home last night. he says threatening calls have prompted them to leave. maryland mother is on a mission today, how she hopes to change minds by sharing the story of her daughter's suicide. and while you're out of luck if you were planning on taking a bus to the new mgm casino in maryland. temperatures are starting off chilly but tom has your bus

post," mgm sent a letter that says guests will not be able to use public transportation to get on to property and neither will employees. this is not welcome news for prince george's county officials. they say the company's decision to not include bus stops is a break from previous commitments. today metro's board will discuss the proposed potomac yard metro station in alexandria. that station would be along the blue and yellow lines between reagan national airport metro and braddock road metro stops. we'll have a complete re breakdown news 4 at 4:00. i love this change in weather. it really feels like it's settling in. but i don't want to get too optimistic. >> anything is better than 20 degrees. we can definitely celebrate what is coming. a live look outside. 44 degrees and clouds are done for the most part. let's go to tom kierein. >> stop worrying, eun. the worst is over. >> yay!

>> reporter: good morning. it is a somber day here in prince george's county where the police department will lay to rest one of their own. if you take a look here behind me this, is the officer's cruiser here outside victory christian ministries here will temple hills. draped in black bunting. let's go to video taken yesterday from a viewing that was held at the funeral hoifr for officer rabain. he was just 26 years old. he died early saturday morning when he crashed his cruiser into a fence in lanham right off of greenbelt road. he was trying to pull over a speeding vehicle at that time. police are still investigating what caused him to lose control of his car. now, his girlfriend was in the cruiser with him, she was not seriously hurt. and that funeral is getting understand way this morning here at victory christian ministries at 10:00 right here in temple hills. eun, back to you. >> darcy spencer live for us this morning. thank you. a developing story now. we're working on learning more about a shooting in northwest

washington. it happened just before 2:00 this morning on jefferson street. police closed off that area. there were several officers on the scene when we shot this video. we'll try to update the nbc washington app as we learn more information about this shooting. right now a prince william county m 1is face charges to bringing guns to a high school. john lenox is a security guard and was make security checks around the school and had two guns on him. virginia law says only police can carry guns at schools. if you have kids in manassas park, the school board voted to approve a new balanced calendar. the first day of school will be august 17th the for the 2015/16 school year. that's two week earlier than students in manassas and prince william county and many other parts of the virginia. student breaks and intercessions will be announced later this month.

today you can learn more about how to combat sexual violence on campuses. a discussion will be held between several policy changing advocacy groups between noon and 2:00 at the economic policy institute in northwest washington. a somber remembrance begins outside the white house at noon today. a group of syrians and americans will read the names of more than 200,000 people killed in syria by the as sadsad regime and isis. this will include the name of westerners slain by isis. the remembrance is part of the how many more project. last year the group read names for 72 hours. today a maryland mom hopes to change minds. linda diaz hopes by sharing a heartwrenching story of her daughter's suicide, she can change minds about men altal health. she will testify in support of lauren's law, named after her daughter who took her own life at the age of 15. the law would require school

in temperatures right now in the low 40s in the metzeither metro area. still some melting snow, so watch out for water on the roads. in the mountain down near 30. metro area low to mid-40s. dry pavement most of the region for the morning commute except some of the rural roads where there is watery patches. we'll be in the upper 40s for the morning commute with lots of sunshine. have your sunglasses with you. then dry roads most of the region for the afternoon as we reach the upper 50s by midafternoon with just a few high clouds coming in. then tomorrow we'll have increasing clouds by 3:00 in the afternoon. leading edge of rain, that's the area in green we'll be in the shenandoah valley. then it's after that, by 6:00 p.m. we'll see that rain moving in to northern virginia and coming into th metro area by then. so right around sunset is when we'll likely get that rain beginning to move true.through.

night is looking wet all around the region. certainly if you have plans to go out friday night, it will be wet and we'll stay this way into saturday morning, as well. we'll have rain continuing to fall but then by about 11:00 or noon a lot of the rain pulls east of the metro area and we begin to dry out during the afternoon. and on tuesday this week, i traveled to prince william county visited the rockledge elementary school. i talked to 300 of the students there. had a terrific time. there is the teacher ted eldridge who invited knee visit. filled the cafeteria. we had a lot of fun. wonderful school there rockledge elementary. and after we get through the rain tomorrow low 50s, drops into the 40s overnight, and during the day on saturday in the morning the big rock 'n' roll half marathon. looks like rain with temperatures in the 40s.

in the afternoon we dry out. sunday great day for outdoor activities. sunday mid-50s. another chance of rain maybe tuesday. another crash in the damascus/clarksburg area. 75 at price road overturned vehicle here. so we'll be checking that out. we're sending chopper 4 right now to this one, clarksburg road at bethesda. all lanes blocked because of a crash that happened about 20 minutes ago. so we'll be there in just a little bit here. 80 ramp to southbound 270, that crash now on the shoulder. so for some reason this area just not looking so hot this morning. beltway at colesville inner loop outer loop moving quite nicely. big look at the beltway also again looking quite good taking a look at all of the main routes. generally looking pretty good there. do want to tell you about this, white's ferry completely closed today because of flooding. so that won't be running. again, though this 75 at price
