has been a significant development in this case possibly connected to more robberies. we do not have a lot of details about it. but we understand that it is connected to the robbery that happened here earlier this afternoon. it was clear from the presence of a large number of federal agents fbi and secret service and d.c. police detectives that this bank robbery is receiving extra attention. >> could bit the work of the so-called black hat bandits, armed men who have robbed seven banks in d.c. maryland and virginia? listen to this description provided by the man next door at the gold's gym. >> i came out of my job today and saw a guy with his face covered, a poncho basically all dark blue, breathing duper hard and ran up the stairs right in front of me and basically -- police basically ran right in front of me after him and that's

realized that he probably robbed a bank. >> reporter: investigators spent time examining a rooftop parking lot where it is believed an accomplice was waiting. it all happened around 2:30 in a very busy block of connecticut avenue northwest close to the udc campus. again, as i said news4 as learned there has been a significant development in regard to this bank robbery, possibly connected to a number of other bank robberies, details are not clear right now. we believe that -- we don't believe it's an arrest at this point, but it is being described to me by sources as a significant development and we are standing by awaiting further information from the fbi. hopefully we'll get that this evening. live in northwest, jackie bensen news4. now to a question facing a lot of home owners in our area. are you willing to pay higher taxes for first-class schools? that's part of budget plan in prince george's county tonight. it involves a big hike in

property taxes and layoffs and furloughs for county workers all to improve public safety and local schools. county bureau chief is live in upper marlboro. whatt plan? >> the county executive is saying when folks move to prince george's count fist question is where will my child go to school, is it one of the good schools or do i have to put them in private scho does not want that to be the case anymore. by 2020 he wants prince george's coun to have one of the top ten schools in maryland. the county executive believes he's at war to stave county and the fight centers around the school system. s and prince pals come here for seven years, we train them they do a great job, and they get a signing bonus to go elsewhere. those days are over. >> reporter: he introduced a bold $3.6 billion budget with a focus on more money for schools and public safety but also layoffs, furlough and tax increases. >> even in these tough economic times, we're investing.

>> rep the prince george's cod req $1.9 billion in funding and baker proposes completely funding them by giving $135.7 million more than they got last year. >> there were year where is we were reduced by hundreds of millions of dollars, and so, you know, when tt happens several successive years it takes a while to build that back up. >> reporter: the money to pay for that increase will come from increasing property taxes. the 15-cent increase per $100 is expected to yield $104.9 million for schools. so if you have a $200,000 home you will pay $300 more in taxes per year. there are also staff impacts with five furlough days proposed and 110 layoffs for county employees. >> biggest obstacle for our county is the school system. >> reporter: the county council will have the final say over the county executive's budget and r is promising a thorough review. >> we understand the reason for the county executive's proposal but we have to again, exercise

bethesda, they are in n tonight. doctors aren't saying much more than that. we still don't know if they're treating a man or woman or how old the patient is. nih says it's taking eve precaution to ensure the safety of staff, other patients and the public. president obama is visiting the v.a. medical sent nor phoenix that was at the center of a major scandal last year. that v.a. hospital in arizona is where records were falsified to mask the long wait times for patients. the news4's i-team's scott mcfarlane with new details now about a woman at the center of that scandal. >> wendy, the president today acknowledged hospital leaders in phoenix made mistakes. in his wor ty cooked the books for too long a some of the people involved were bad apples. the agency recently fired a ho medical director, this woman sharon hellmann. she's hired a d.c. law firm. those attorneys fought hellmann's initiation but she's also trying to salvage a $9,000

performance bos she received while leading that phoenix hospital. the v. savmt trying to rescind the money but multiple sources say the case is scheduled to go before a d.c. area judge in late april. the i-team broke the news last year that even amid the long backlogs for patients and the cooking of the books in some hospitals, the v.a. handled out $2.8 million in bonus pay just to its executives. as the president appeared in phoenix today, va executives told us there are new accountability measures in place now and the president himself said he wants veterans to be reassured they will be cared for. >> it's important that veterans know that somebody's got their backs and that if there are problems that we're not being doifls about it we're not hiding them we're working together with organizations around the table to fix them. >> leaders for the u.s. house committee say they're trying to pass new law making it easier for the va to pull back bonus

pay from its employees when deemed necessary. and we just learned that while in arizona the president met privately with the family of kayla mueller, the humanitarian aid worker who was kidnapped in syria and executed by isis militants. mueller was from prescott arizona. her family has set up a new foundan her name. a fence jumper ran taum way into the white house back in september and he'll be sentenced in june after striking a deal with prosecutors. omar gonzalez had a knife in his pocket when he jumped the fence. he dashed in white house and made it to the east room before agents stopped him. making it worse, the first family had just left the white house a few minutes earlier. but gonzalez is an iraq war veteras family says he has posttraumatic stress disorder. they're starting to salvage the black hawk helicopter that crashed this week and we are learning there is a virginia connection to one of the victims, master sergeant thomas saunders. he was from williamsburg served in the wars q and

afghanistan. seven marines and four soldiers from the louisiana army national guard were killed when that black hawk crashed in heavy fog off the coast of florida on tuesday. military officials say the salvage efforts could take about eight hours. we're getting new details this evening about the moments right before a police officer shot and killed a man inside a metro station. this happened in a tunnel at the potomac avenue station. news4's mark segraves is there. he's been working the story. mark what are you hearing? >> reporter: hey, chris. metro officials aren't saying much but our law enforcement sources are telling us that this metro transit police officer acted in self-defense when she shot and killed that man as the man was coming toward her with a large stick. the man had been in the tunnel at least 20 minutes before metro transit police shot and killed him. sources say he was not wearing a shirt. according to a time line provided by metro, at 8:50 last night act train operator reported an unauthn

in the tunnel. at 8:57 the first metro officer arrived on the scene. at 9:01 three more officers arrived and began searching the tunnel. at 9:10 one of those officers encountered the suspect about 400 feet from the platform. law enforcement sources tell news4 the man had a large stick in his hands as he approached the female officer. the officer fired multiple shots at close range, killing the man. now, despite repeated requests metro officials refusing to answer any questions tonight about this fatal shooting. they have not released the name of the police officer or of the victim who was killed. we can tell you that the police officer, a female has been with metro transit police for more than ten years. and she was not injured in this incident. reporting live in southeast, mark segraves news4. still ahead at 6:00, a local pastor murdered by a man who claimed kills demons. tonight we're hearing from a woman who was inside the house

police are working to find two people who shot two officers in ferguson missouri yesterday. jay gray joins us live from ferguson. how's the rain playing into the protests there? >> reporter: it's not until after work around 6:30 7:00 we see people out. we just heard from the chief of st. louis county pol and they said their top priority right now is find finding the person or people responsible for shooting two police officers here. that investigation continues as does the push for change from the protesters here. a steady soaking rain seems to have dampened the tension in ferguson right now, a day after two police officers were wound by gunfire. the hunt for the suspects

continues. >> i cannot tell you an arrest is imminent. there's certainly nobody in custody. >> reporter: they believe the shots came about 150 yards from the police station where the officers were hit and where protesters gathered again last night. >> the protests will not end. we are seeking legislative changes. there will be reforms. the world will hear us. >> reporter: a message that overnight included prayers for the ambushed officers. >> we came to grieve the wounding of law enforcement officers. we came to give god thanks that the officers who were injured last night are now at their homes. >> reporter: recovering as this community struggles to do the same. no word to of an organized protest tonight. there's always a few p show up. some of the organizers are meeting for dinner at a row lowel area church. there's a new reward out for

pope francis is starting his third year as head of the catholic church and he is wildly popular. today marks two years since pope francis' election to the papacy and 90% of catholics say they have a favorable opinion of him according to a pew research survey. that's about the same as pope john paul ii. but pope francis doesn't expect to serve as long. the 78-year-old told mexico's tf channel it may only be a couple more years. he says the lord chose me for a short mission. the pope's visit to d.c. this fall could put a big strain

this week. he said he was hearing voices telling him to dance. zip zi came to dagadu from pennsylvania. the two pastors prayed with him tuesday night. she said there were no problems until she awoke wednesday to loud noises. >> he charged at me right in front of the house. so before he could get to me i closed the door. i say, you calm down and the way he didn't stop and he was still coming at me so i closed the door. when i closed the door, he smashed the window. >> reporter: the minister let zinneh in and he threatened her. she ran to the basement and found pastor dagadu strangled. she called 911. she says this changes the ministry. no more overnight stays and they'll be more careful about who they try to help. >> he wanted to pray for him and cast out whatever spirit were bothering him. that's why he came. that's why he came to us. to be prayed for. he came for help. so how this happened and ended

that sparked fresh debate on the university of maryland's college park campus. the e-mail was forwarded to university officials this week and university president wallace loh responded with "the vulgar language in the e-mail expresses views that are repre to our campus community. we immediately met with the individual involved and a university investigati is under way." whatever that n is yields one student wonders if it can make a difference. >> that's something that need to be changed over time. it's more, you know like knowing where your values are. >> reporter: it was the topic of a national press club discussion on campus sexual assault and harassment. cynthia garrett, an attorney who focuses on campus equality issues was among the panelists. >> you know, you educate them just like you educate them about their career. >> reporter: maryland officials plan what they're calling an educational intervention with kappa sigma after the spring break. and we want to make it clear this young man, now while he may be out of the fraternity, is apparently still a student at the university of maryland.

the university president said he was personally anger and saddened by this message but he also said he does not think the one individual should define an entire fraternity and it will be the message that comes across after spring break when they go on with this discussion a little more. in college park back to you. i'm pat lawson muse at the live desk. d.c. have made a quick arrest after a day after a man was shot and killed in his car. 20-year-old christopher adams was discovered dead on jefferson street yesterday morning. today police arrested 24-year-old glen walker. he's charged with first-degree murder. adams was a graduate of wilson high and his family told us last night he was a good guy. at the live desk pat lawson muse. one of our viewers picked up the phone after seeing our bad samaritan story on wednesday and

now police know who they're looking for. this started with a woman crashing her car in dumfries on saturday. she was in and out of consciousness before the police arrived. but a man who was thought to be a good samaritan seemed to be helping her, but he was really helping himself to her credit cards. and he was caught on surveillance camera using them a short time later. that story aired only on news4. a viewer called police to identify him as william powell. powell has no fixed address. but police say he has ties to maryland. tonight there is a warrant for his arrest. the first female fire chief in frederick county is out after just two years on the job. and there's stale lot of questions as to why denise puget left her position last night pap union lead told our sister station in hagerstown the departure came down l differences over how to run the department. other county officials have yet to comment. puget previously served as assistant fire chief in montgomery county with more than 25 years working in that

department. >> c a that a man who was arrested for sexually abusing a music student in montgomery county may have other victims. police say jeffrey o'connor molested a boy over a three-year period at his house in silver spring. that's where he teaches guitar lessons. according to court documents organization connor gave boy gifts in exchange for his silence. police say o'connor also taught other children at his home. new at 6:00 we're learning more about a bizarre attempt to steal jewelry from a local department store after it had closed. oscar gn was caught hiding in a stock room on the macy's on east/west highwa rif dale. police say he had $25,000 worth of jewelry in his pocket. this was just after midnight. detectives found smashed glass cases, a hammer and a trail of blood that led them right to him. >> it's not enough to buy a winning lottery ticket. you need to hang onto it. a man in southern california just lost out on a prize that was worth more than a million

dollars. he purchased that ticket in september and when no one came forward the lottery released surveillance video and the man saw himself. when he saw it on the news. and he couldn't find his ticket. he had until last night to find it and cash it in. and he couldn't. that money now goes to california's public schools. >> that hurts. buried by an avalanche. some terrifying moments for a group of friends caught on video. how one managed to survive, the others scrambled free. and four behind bars after drug bust.

those are the moments we are just now seeing when an australian skier was initially buried by an avalanche. this happened on the swiss french border. man's name is james ward and a helmet camera warn by his friends you were hearing caught the moments when the snow came down. this is back in january. one of mort's ski poles, however, ended up sticking up through the snow and that helped his friends find him and rescue him. more than 2,000 potholes have been filled in in montgomery county but the worst is yet to come. crews say spring is actually the worst time for potholes and this week they added 20 extra trucks and crews to help deal with the roads. they tried to fill each pothole within 48 hours of the fist report. potholes still out there putting a lot of stress on our vehicles and our wallets. northern virginia reporter david culvert spent the day looking at how much money this costs drivers.

well they're the men and women whose courage and compassion help protect the citizens of montgomery county. today the county chamber of commerce honored them at the 41st annual public safety awards luncheon. 5,400 people atenned this lun shop including outgoing barbara mikulski. this year's gold medal of valor went to captain larry murray.

our pat lawson muse and nbc's tom costell o'lowe with the emcees today. we are remembering the life of one of the most famous modern american architects and designers. you may have one of his teapots. michael graves died at his home in new jersey. he was 08 years old. graves designed a lot of buildings in the d.c. area including the colorful st. coletta school on independen sout and the u.s. district court annex at 3rd and constitution. in 199 it was graves who came u that scaffolding look for the washington monument restoration. graves was also known for his household designs including those teapots and he had lines of household designs that sold in target and jcpenney. well tonight some neighbors in a close-knit community in virginia are shocked and they're talking about a big drug bust in the dale city neighborhood. this area's filled with families and retirees. as northern virginia bureau y reports, two men have been arrested and

charged with dealing heroin. >> reporter: take a look around the road. it is your typic suburban neighborhood. residents say the folks in this house just moved in a few months ago. early thursday police arrived armed with a search warrant. inside the house they found drugs -- heroin, oxy yi oxycodone morphine marijuana, and cash. two of the men living there 36-year-old marcus brown and 35-year-old raymond messenger are charged with drug distribution. two others 26-year-old kiely mccarry and 51-year-old allen gonye have possession charges. the concern of heroin and overdoses are a big concern across the region. police say they are trying to stop the flow with arrests like this one. >> straits the fact this is a problem in communities not just ours but communities all over the united states. and police dmtds not only this e i'm sure are addressing it in any way, shape, or form that they can to try to curb it and

but in the nfl, last year is last year. >> oleout with the old, in with the new. that seems to be the mott foe for the redskins this off-season. depending who you talk to brian orakpo was either a grea terrible overhyped or underappreciated linebacker du his time with the redskins. 40 sacks in six years, not bad for most pass rushers but injuries really hampered his production the last few seasons. orakpo no longer a member of the skins. he's now with the tennessee titans. the 28-year-old linebacker leaves the redskins for a four-year $32 million deal with tennessee. orakpo was drafted the 13th pick overall back in 2009. he was a three-time pro bowler for the burgundy and gold but he did miss 24 games over the last three seasons due to injuries. the redskins were interested in re-signing orakpo but those talks didn't go very far. you can clearly see why general manager scott mcclune made a lot o the changes on defense. check out the three newest guys
