♪ welcome to news 4 "this week." >> hi, everyone, i'm veronica johnson and we're going to show you the more interesting local stories s this week. among them taking charge we introduce to a woman who is not only climbing the rank in the military but is now leading a prestigious unit traditionally dominated by men. plus he sang to them on their wedding day. a d.c. couple is asking for your help to find them so they can give back. plans for a controversial station seems to have run out of gas. a decision that settled a year long battle. but first, tipsy travelers

creating a dangerous situation. one falling between rail cars. metro is warning you can be too drunk to ride. >> sunday march, 1 1/2, a metro rider stumbling around the platform he seemingly is trying to get on the train as the doors open but then he falls in between two trains. passengers try to get the attention of the train operator but within seconds, the train starts moving. marco peiry is the man waiving his hands and putting his hands in disbelief on his head. we've shown him the video. it is the first time he's seen it. >> i feared the worst. >> reporter: this rider was extremely lucky. marco said he managed to crawl into a space known as the area of refuge under the platform.

>> the trained rolled away. it seemed like it took forever to leave the station. we walk up and somebody looked over the edge and said oh, my god, he's alive. >> reporter: the man refuses any help and walks away. metro says you absolutely can be too drunk to ride. >> it's important for riders to monitor themselves and go -- look out for your friends. if someone is not able to walk properly maybe that's the time to order a cab. there are fewer people using metro now than there were last year. new numbers from the american public transportation association showing mass transportation used in the d.c. area fell by 2/3 of a percent last year. the drop was steeper on metro sch straw -- which saw a drop of .8%. metro blames it on the harsh winter weather that we've had that caused school and office

closures. virginia is takg new steps to protect the rights of mothers during women's history month. it's being made legal for women to breast feed their children in public. south dakota just changed its law this month. the new laws take effect july 1. costco plans to build a pump in wheaton. montgomery county board of appeals denied a petition to build a 16 pump station. it would have gone up at costco right there at westfield wheaton mall. residents have opposed this calling it a health hazard. they say fumes from idling cars would harm kids who use a nearby swimming pool. they are calling it a victory. >> this proposal should never have been put forward.

it is sad that our community has been put through a nightmare scenario. >> the board says there is no need for another gas station there. costco representative didn't comment on it. former marion barry, a mural was revealed. the 12 by 16 foot painting is in ward 8 and can be seen from 295 northbound. an effort is under way to recognize barry in other ways possibly naming a street or school after him. a local couple encountered an unexpected magical moment on their wedding day. it led to a bigger regret. now they are trying to go back and fix the problem. they need your help. take a look. >> reporter: life is filled with great gifts and one is

serendipity. as aaron and me lace is a discovered on their wedding day. that moment occurred last fall as they stood outside the iron gate inn. >> all of a sudden a man approach us on the street and he bang to sing to us and he started to sing stevie wonder's isn't she lovely. his voice was beautiful, passionate. he was in a great mood. he wanted to share his talents and gifts with us. >> it was very touching. >> then the stranger asked for a small gift in return. >> when he was done he asked for financial assistance because he had to sing for his supper. >> later that day, it hit them they should have invited this

man to the reception, but when they went back out, he was gone. >> and it's something that was weighed very heavily on me that i wasn't in an opportunity to help that day and i didn't think. >> we would like to find him and thank him. in some way, whatever that might be. i think i would recognize him again if we were to interact with him or encounter i am. >> he's an african-american man in his 40s wearing a brown suit that day. he had a beautiful voice and beautiful spirit. if you know who he may be let us know. we've shared their story on nbc washington facebook page so please share it too so that we can find the man who they have never forgotten. if you know who he is contact wendy m. on twitter at nbc wendy. he's not quite set for live -- life but he's set for college, the massive amount of money a local high school student is getting for winning a prestigious award.

♪ a local high school student won't have to worry about paying for college and he definitely earned it. all that money, michael winer, a student at montgomery blair high school. he won first place medal of distinction for innovation for his study of sound particles called fonons he hopes leads to the creation of the semiconductor. >> i won $150,000. i won fame and fortune and i guess i won some pride. i'm still working on the math. i might have to spend it on something like education. >> he's thinking about the money. last year, he won the silver

medal medal. in the military women have not only fought for their country, but also for their right to do job traditionally held by men. news 4 shows us a military police officer making history by taking charge of one of the most prestigious units in the army. >> reporter: precision, strength perfection. it's been the legacy of the united states army drill team for decades, a team where the soldiers mark alike, drill alike, and to some degree even look alike. but now a turn in tradition and at the center of it all first lieutenant lauren glover. >> it's really exciting and humbling and try to do the job to the best of our ability every day. >> reporter: you get nervous. >> just a little bit, i i do. >> reporter: nefers, maybe because she's doing something never done before. click by click, she's changing

the course history by being the first female officer to command it. >> when people are td they can do anything, they believe it. when you have examples of it it becomes a truer reality. >> reporter: when she join the military in 2011 she had no idea that a team like this existed. she saw them perform for the first time last year and she was sold. she said this was something that she had to be a part of but she questioned the chances. you didn't think that was a possibility, why? >> from what i understood from the drill team the past commanders were males. >> she got the chance. an opportunity that would make her the first woman to lead a combat arms platoon. >> the biggest challenge for me overcoming the anxiousness of coming into a new situation and not knowing how i would be received by the men of the platoon but the guys have been great. >> reporter: as commander now she's already led her team of 19

men before dignitaryies, and medal of honor recipients it was during an nfl half time show things got real. >> when they announced my name, the stadium roerd. it was exciting. not everybody is happy this i'm a female and i'm in this position. i'm here to show them i can do it. >> a sense of pride and resilience she got from her mom laura who also was in the military for 28 years. now, her turn to walk the walk only looking back to see who follows. >> it may be tough. you might be scared. you might be the first one. don't limb yourself. do the best you can. >> angie goss news 4. before becoming commander, lieutenant glover was part of twilight 2.

treasures to be found. >> i don't barring too hard when i come here because it goes to a good place. >> any money goes to employee salaries and things like heat. >> before i came here i hadn't held a job for more than nine months. >> james becker was the first. >> i stuck with them and they stuck with me. >> a jobs unlimited program. >> this piece of furniture is $200. >> allow james to take classes at nearby montgomery college, where he put his all in his schoolwork and now has a certificate in accounting. >> people who knew me five years ago wouldn't believe it. >> over the years, they have hired hundreds of employees like cameron here. right now they have 24 people working part-time. >> we've been -- i believe -- a wonderful organization for these 24 people but there's hundreds more we could serve if we had the funding to do it. >> reporter: they are all

with a snowman contest. the company says this is the sort of thing that helps make custom ink a fun place to work. the company is ranked number 62. not the first time that company has made a fortune top list to learn their secrets visit nbc4 washington and search custom ink. that snow contest was a snow pig that won. over at catholic university the men's basketball team is causing double trouble for its opponents. twins kyle and kevin phanord helped lead their team to the second round of the tournament. they are taeching their teammates and head coach what it means to be good men. >> december 27th. >> who was born first? >> i was. two minutes later. >> he think he has it on me that two minutes. >> meet catholic university's

magnetic twins. kyle and kevin phanord. >> i it will be look -- i definitely look out more for him than vice versa. >> i don't know if that two minutes -- >> it makes me feel like his dad or older brother. >> but the big brother-baby spots on the -- stops on the court. >> we just happen to be blood brothers but other than that we're all the same family. >> tremendous people off the court. terrific students. they are over 3.7. pre-med and then on the court they both could be starters. >> their specific roles are different on the team but together they are studying to achieve the same goals off the court. they want to be dentists. >> the smile thing is the first thing i usually notice about someone. i feel like some people don't smile because they are conscious about it.
